The guys spent the rest of the night deep in thought. They went after the Surf Nazis for their meal that night. It Doesn't matter which ones, they will eventually kill them all. Afterward, their minds were on the girls. They were so distracted they didn't even notice Star wasn't at the cave. Laddie was on his bed in the main room by himself.

Star and Laddie had come back to the cave a few hours ago. Laddie ran into the cave with no problem, went over to his corner, took off his shoes, and picked up a coloring book. He goes to ask Star about his brothers when he noticed she wasn't in the cave. He just shrugged his shoulders thinking she just dropped him off and left.

Star has never been so angry before in her life. She and Laddie came back to the cave to get in bed before David got back. Low and behold, when Laddie entered the cave without a problem Star didn't think anything was wrong until she tried to enter. It was like hitting a brick wall. Knocking her on her tailbone. She got up and yelled for Laddie. It was like he couldn't hear her.

After a few minutes of trying to get Laddie's attention she left. Needing to get somewhere before the sun came up. She ended up at Michael's place. Crawled into his bed without waking him up, covering her face from the rising sun. Star fell asleep still very angry, as well as confused.

About an hour before sunrise, Marko was ordered to retrieve Star from the Emerson's house. He is not sure why Max would give an order like this so close to sunrise. Star must not be in danger or she would have contacted them through the link. Marko could feel Max's anger when he more aggressively gave the order. Marko had no choice but to leave the cave.

Marko was flying as fast as he could to Michael's place to get Star. He floated outside of Michael's window and knocked as loud as he could without shattering the glass. Neither body made a move to open the window.

The sun has begun to break the horizon. Marko is panicking. He will not reach the cave in time. He's closer to Nyx and Izzy. He doesn't know why he feels he could go to them but it feels like the right decision. So he flies there as fast as he can, given the fact his energy is draining. His body is heating up, starting to burn slightly. By the time Marko reaches the door to the kitchen, he is almost in flames and his skin is charring. He screams in agony on the steps in front of the door.

The door is flung open, Marko falls forward onto the floor still smoking. He doesn't know if it is Nyx or Izzy, but someone smothered him with a heavy blanket to stop the burning. He is in so much pain he doesn't notice the heavy metal shutters closing, the house is consumed by darkness.

"What the hell Marko? What were you doing out at sunrise?" Nyx whispered yelled at him. She had been in the kitchen getting a drink of water when Marko showed up. She helped him stand to take him into the cavern. If he wasn't in pain, Marko would have been shocked at her second question.

Nyx is not even struggling with supporting his body weight, "Heal now, talk later." She continues to carry him to the study, pulling a book titled "Το σπήλαιο" (The Cavern in Greek) to open the passageway to the cavern.

As Nyx led Marko down the stairs, torches every few feet lit up on their own. Izzy was in her bed when she heard more than one set of feet come down the stairs. She is shocked to see Nyx half carrying a scorched Marko. She jumped out of bed and went to a hidden room behind their beds that held a fridge full of blood bags in case of emergencies.

Carefully sitting Marko down, Nyx had removed the still smoldering blanket, his boots and was carefully removing his charred jacket. Having Marko lay down on his back with his head slightly elevated on her pillows. His charred hands are gripping the covers as he pants from the pain. She climbed into her bed on the other side of him, careful not to jostle him. Izzy had brought back four bags of blood to help Marko heal. She set them down within easy reach of Nyx.

Nyx bit her wrist with her fangs, tearing it open. She watched as her blood flowed from the wound. Nyx turned her wrist downward over Marko's open lips, "Marko. I need you to drink." Placing her wrist closer to his mouth, Marko latched on taking very long pulls.

After about three minutes Nyx started to feel dizzy from the blood loss, "That's enough." Marko reluctantly let go of her wrist only for it to be replaced by a punctured blood bag. He sucked two bags dry like they were CapriSuns. Nyx drank the other two before helping Marko get as comfortable as he could with his charred skin.

Before Marko fell into unconsciousness he sent a message to David, "I'm hurt. I'm safe but I'm hurt." The link between Nyx and Marko has begun to form. He was able to feel her, like his brothers but not quite the same. Marko heard Nyx in his head, "Sleep. We will talk when we wake and your brothers get here."

Over the duration of his sleep, Marko was plagued with images not his own. Catching glimpses of Nyx's life.

The sun had barely set when David, Dwayne, and Paul flew out of the cave towards Marko. They barely realized where they landed when Izzy met them at the door. Too worried for their brother to knock or even greet Izzy. David racked his brain, trying to figure out what Max was up to. Why did he order Marko to leave the cave so close to sunrise?

Izzy had led them to the study where she pulled the book, Το σπήλαιο, halfway off the shelf until it clicked. That part of the bookshelf slid back then slid to the left, revealing a stone staircase, the torches lighting as they descended.

Coming into the room, they see two beds. One was made, the other had two bodies in it. During their sleep, Marko had turned to his side and cuddled into Nyx. Wrapping his newly healed arms around her midsection, his face buried in her breasts, some dried blood in the corner of his mouth. Lightly snoring. David, Dwayne, and Paul had panicked when Marko didn't return to the cave before the sun rose. Seeing him healed, safe and snoring was a relief.

Paul couldn't help himself. He shrugged off his jacket and climbed into the bed on Nyx's other side. Like the goofball that he is, he wrapped his arms and one leg around the both of them. "I could get used to this."

David chuckled, sitting on the edge of the bed next to Marko. He grasped his shoulder and shook him, "Time to wake up. Sun's down." David looked down and saw the empty blood bags on the floor. He leaned down and picked one up, showed Dwayne and Paul, who had only one eye open.

The weight shift from David bending down caused Nyx to open her eyes, "Marko. Your brothers are here."

Marko stirred enough to grip her tighter, bringing her closer to him, "No… Comfortable." Except it sounded muffled since he didn't bother moving his head from Nyx's bust.

Nyx snickered and tried to move only to be weighed down by Paul, "Hi." Then Nyx outright laughed at the big goofy grin Paul was giving. She kissed Marko's forehead, turning to her side to tell Paul to move so she could get up, noticing he was playfully pouting. "What? No kiss for me." Nyx reached up with her right hand, touching Paul's cheek, and gave him a short but sweet kiss on the lips.

Paul didn't want the kiss to end so soon. However, he was hungry but also happy as hell Marko was ok. They were all worried about Marko, even after he said he was safe. Seeing him in their mate's arms, safe and healed pulled that happiness onto a whole nother level. They could have lost Marko, and they don't even understand why.

All the while Dwayne was standing at the end of Izzy's bed looking around the cavern, thinking to himself 'This is what we missed'. He was going to step next to David and ask if they were ready to go hunting when he saw what looks like a mural of a family tree. "Guys. Check this out."

Marko had still not moved, but Paul and David joined Dwayne to view the mural. The very top started close to the ceiling with only two images with their names below them. King Enkil and Queen Akasha. Several branches flowed away from their images before narrowing at the bottom.

Two black and white photos yellowing with age at the bottom. One a blue-eyed, black-haired girl named Nyx de Romanus, born April 07, 1401. The other, a green-eyed, silver-haired girl named Isadora de Romanus, born September 13, 1413.

"I see you found our family tree." They turned at the sound of Nyx's voice. "What we tell you does not leave this room. Nobody else can know, not even your sire can know." She held up her hand to stop David from protesting. "We don't trust him. You have to understand, once it is found out what we are… We become a target."

"What do you mean? You're vampires, right?" Paul is trying to come to grips with what's going on.

Nyx showed them the Mark of Purity on her right wrist, "We're more than that. Izzy and I weren't sired. We were born. Which is extremely rare, even more so when both our parents were already evolved into full vampires. And as you can see, we are all that's left." A single tear escaped Nyx's misty eyes.

Clearing her throat, Nyx continued, "Our mother was killed when we were very young. I hadn't even evolved yet, Izzy was still a babe. Our father was torn apart and burnt after helping us escape Italy a little over two hundred years ago. Izzy and I have been moving every few decades or so. We're trying to stay hidden from other vampires. Considering what we are, we're extremely valuable when it comes to the Vampiric Hierarchy. Izzy and I are not your 'average' vampire. Besides the normal attributes, we can walk in daylight. We were born, aged like normal humans until our twentieth birthday, then we evolved into what we are now. The transition took about twenty-four hours. Felt like we were dying from a horrible stomach bug. Then it was over and truthfully I felt different but the same all at once."

Nyx was quiet for a moment, letting her words sink in a little before continuing, "One vampire, in particular, keeps getting too close for comfort. Deacon Frost and his minions. He wants to collect us like we're some kind of trophy. And get his hands on the king and queen. If you take a closer look at the images at the top, you'll see they have no death date. They are in-stasis here, behind that door. If they ever rise, the world would either bow or burn." Nyx pointed to the sealed door on the far wall.

Marko had finally got out of bed, wandering over to Nyx. He pulled Nyx to him, hugging her back to his bare chest, and wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on her shoulder. She had settled her arms on top of his, taking deep breaths and calming down.

Dwayne had sat down on Izzy's bed and pulled her into his lap, holding her while she had tears running down her face. "So… What really happened to Izzy?"

"About ten years ago we had to move from upstate New York. Some of the people around us were getting too nosy. A whisper here and there from certain sources and we had a lynch mob outside our door. I was throwing the last of our belongings in a truck when Izzy was pulled into the center of the mob. Whoever ratted us out had made sure they were equipped to deal with us. A sword forged in silver. Not many things can kill us that would a normal vampire. She was nearly beheaded before I drove the truck through the mob, plowing down several people before I reached Izzy. Grabbed her, pulled her in the truck, and got the hell out of there. Leaving so many crushed under the truck as we drove off. Unfortunately, I was unable to heal her correctly, being on the move and all. Izzy survived but her voice box was destroyed." Nyx gave Dwayne a teary smile. He was holding Izzy as if she would disappear if he loosened his grip.

"Someone went through a lot of trouble to reveal who and what we were. Over the centuries, our father had taught us how to control the hunger. We don't feed as often, but when we do, the body count is pretty high. The Art Exchange, for example, fifty people were drained before the fire was set." Chuckling at the memory, Nyx turned in Marko's arms and kissed him.

"How are you feeling?" Nyx asked Marko, resting her forehead against his. She can feel he is doing better through the bond, but hearing the words are more reassuring.

"Better than I have in a long time." And he really meant that. Marko thought he was going to die that morning, only to be saved by his mate. He was not expecting Nyx or her sister to be vampires. "I do want to know how we didn't recognize you two as vampires? Your scent doesn't smell like a vampire, like us."

Smiling at one of her mates, "I think it's because of our bloodlust control. And we have learned to mask our true scent from other vampires." Nyx pulled away from Marko but laced her fingers through his, "You guys should get going. Still have to feed. You're not completely healed yet."

Marko nods his head, lets go of Nyx, and goes to put on his boots. He got a little upset at the damage on his jacket. Thinking about how the damage came about, he spoke his thoughts aloud. Keeping his eyes on his jacket clasped in his hands, "I can't feel my connection to Max since this morning. Like the link has been severed. He gave me an order to go get Star from Michael, then nothing. It's like he wanted me to burn up." He looked to David, his leader, and eldest brother, "I don't trust him anymore. He was never really one of us. Living like a human, running the video store, and such. We do our own thing, live by our rules and he treats us like we're nothing more than dirt under his shoes. His lackeys. I, for one, am tired of it. Maybe this break in the link is what we need. To separate ourselves from him."

The atmosphere of the Cavern became much colder in an instant. Everyone in the room shivered, not so much from the temperature change but from the cause. A faint whisper flowed around the room like a nonexistent breeze. Nyx and Izzy stiffened, knowing what it meant. The guys looked on in curiosity.

Nyx tried to explain what just happened, "They may be in-stasis, but they are still aware. They have sensed a change, a bigger change than moving around. Enkil is concerned for vampires, the blood is becoming diluted, tainted. Akasha, you can feel her outrage. She wants to eliminate those who are impure, unworthy. From what you all have expressed and in the case of Marko's injuries, Max has made the top of that list."

The guys were shocked at the fact Nyx and Izzy knew Max was their sire. Marko mentioned his name but not that he was their sire. Compared to the boys, Max doesn't act like your typical vampire. He lives in a nice house, owns and runs a video store, and tries too hard to blend in. Until he feeds, then the true monster emerges. Max does not discriminate. He kills and drains the first victim or victims he comes across, whether they're adults or innocent children. David and the guys, on the other hand, stick to the derelict, criminals, and such. Scum of the earth types. They may play with their food, but their kills deserve to die.

Nyx decided to try to lighten up the room, "Izzy and I will be here if you want to drop Laddie off. He seems like he is more or less on his own when left with Star. The impression we got from her is that she treats him like a burden when not in sight of you guys."

"If Star is not with him, then we'll bring him here," Dwayne said with no hidden disdain for Star. Izzy gripped him tighter for a moment before getting out of his lap.

"I'm going to reset the shutters." Izzy signed to her sister. She made her way upstairs not seeing two sets of eyes follow her. The main switch to reset the metal window shutters is located in the basement circuit box.

"What did she say?" Dwayne asked, thinking learning sign language may be necessary.

"She is resetting the window shutters. I set them off this morning when Marko arrived. Extra additions to our security, as well as blocking out sunlight. We would leave them shut but the house would heat up like a sauna. We had them installed on the inside, so anyone passing by the house won't see any difference." Nyx gave a small smile.

The group as a whole ascended the staircase to the main floor. The guys were going to find Laddie and Star. Depending on what they find, they will be bringing Laddie to the girls. Star already had her days numbered with not feeding and whining all the time. If she is not taking care of Laddie, then her days amongst the living are coming to an end.

Paul had stopped outside the door to get a kiss from Nyx. He has been the most accepting of the idea of having a mate. Said mate already being a vampire made the acceptance that much easier. Breaking the kiss, Paul stepped away so Marko could kiss Nyx as well.

Marko was not too far behind Paul in his acceptance of a mate. That acceptance became the wrecking ball of the walls around his dead heart this morning. Again, Nyx being a vampire is a plus. Reluctantly ending his kiss with Nyx, Marko and Paul took off to the cave.

David is the most skittish about having a mate. Out of the four, he was the most ruthless, stone-cold heartless bastard. That didn't mean he wasn't protective of his brothers, or even Laddie. He would kill any and everyone who thought to harm his pack, his family. Then Izzy and Nyx came into their lives. That first night meeting the sisters, David felt just as protective, if not moreso, of Izzy. He felt the urge to tear Michael apart, the moment Michael looked her way. The sudden interest in someone outside of his brothers is a new feeling and it scares him. It scares David that he could feel so strongly for someone not his brothers in such a short amount of time. Clearing his head of such thought, he waved at Nyx, he did give Izzy a brief hug before walking out of the door.

Leaning against the doorway, Dwayne pulled Izzy closer to him by her jumper. If someone would have told him he would find his mate in his lifelong existence, he would have laughed in their face. He is not denying he found his mate in Izzy, he is unsure how to go about everything. Relationships are nothing new to Dwayne. However, a vampire only has one mate in their lifetime. The complicated part is sharing said mate with someone else in his pack. He is glad it's David though. Sharing with Paul or Marko would grate on his nerves. Nyx is going to have her hands full with those two. "I most likely will be back with Laddie. Are you guys sure you're ok with us bringing him here? He can be quite a handful sometimes."

Izzy nods her head while Nyx waved off his concern, "Yeah, don't worry about it. We'll probably play video games in the family room until he gets tired."

Sighing with relief, "That's more than what Star does. I'm going to go ahead and go get him." Dwayne kissed Izzy before flying back to the cave.

Landing outside the cave, the guys saw Star stand up. They noticed she looked mad. At what, who knows? She didn't say anything, just followed the boys to the cave entrance. Walking past the sigils, the guys felt safe. Star, on the other hand, couldn't pass through. It was like she smacked into a sliding glass door, sending ripples of magic outward.

Dwayne watched as she hit the ground, words formed in midair. He read them out loud to the guys.

"Those with harmful intentions cannot enter."

A normally cool-headed Dwayne blew up at Star, "What the Fuck Star?" All the guys stood behind Dwayne.

She stood up and just glared at him. If looks could kill. The sweet, innocent Star that they know is gone. All that is left is a woman with murderous intent, "It's those girls, isn't it? They're the ones behind this." She motioned towards the sigils. "I tried to get Max to see how they're manipulating you all. Max is pissed these girls have you all by the balls. Just wait until Max deals with them."

Faster than she could react, David had snapped her neck. Tossing her body over the cliffside into the ocean, he lit a cigarette as he entered the cave, he spotted Laddie sitting on his bed with a coloring book. "Laddie, get some stuff together. You're going to stay with Nyx and Izzy for tonight."

Laddie put his coloring book into a backpack with some of his older clothes, "Where is Star?" For the past year, Star has been his second caregiver after Dwayne. She had been leaving him alone a lot more lately and would be mean to him during the day. Laddie kind of hopes he could just stay with Nyx and Izzy. He liked them a lot better than Star.

David exhaled a cloud of smoke, "Star is gone. She's not coming back." David gave a stern warning for Laddie to behave himself. Laddie strapped his backpack on and approached Dwayne, so they could leave.

Dwayne landed on the front porch with Laddie in his arms and knocked on the door. Izzy opened the door and let them in. He set Laddie down, "Hey, those sigils on the cave kept Star out. She became violent and David had to take care of her."

Nyx came out of the family room after setting up the Atari and newly bought Nintendo. She may or may not be excited to play Super Mario Bros. The girls may be close to six hundred years old but they haven't really grown up. "Well, he can stay here as long as he needs to. The family matron and the ladies will be here tomorrow evening, so someone will always be here and awake. Is there anything he can't have? Food allergies?"

Dwayne shakes his head, "Not that we know of. He does have to drink a small portion of blood every few days to keep the hunger at bay. He hasn't had dinner yet." Dwayne squatted to speak with Laddie, "Alright kid, we'll see you tomorrow night ok. You don't give them any trouble." Dwayne hugged the boy he has come to care about. Nyx took Laddie into the kitchen to get him some dinner, while Izzy said bye to Dwayne. Once he left, the front door was locked.

Laddie has never had so much fun without his brothers in his life. Nyx had made homemade pizzas for dinner with a lot of cheese and pepperoni, sodas and cookies for dessert. Not before having to drink some warmed-up blood in a coffee mug. Come 3 am he was passed out on the couch. Nyx had moved him to lay in Izzy's bed so he wouldn't wake up alone. Maybe David and Dwayne will let him stay more often.
