New Resolution
With his new corps uniform on his back, Tanjiro made his way towards home. His regeneration ability had finally took a toll on him. His body felt heavy from exhaustion and needed the nutrients that it needs to be fully charged.
He had been more or less fine during the Final Selection but now that it was over, the accumulated fatigue began to takes its toll.
Despite this, he hadn't stopped moving after leaving the grounds for the Final Selection, using a tree branch as a makeshift cane to lean against and carrying a white bag with his uniform on it, he continued to move towards his home.
The sun was beginning to set and under normal circumstances, he would get there before nightfall. He was close to it by now, he recognized the path leading to Urokodaki's house, but, in his current state, it felt like he was on the other side of the country.
"..."
He finally made it, just below this slope is Urokodaki-san's house. His master and Nezuko are waiting for him, so he needed to pick up his pace.
When he finally made it up the slope, he stopped when his nose picked up a familiar smell. His eyes widened when he realized who it is, 'It can' t be—'
He gasped, throwing his cane and all the exhaustion in his body disappeared at his state of panic and worry. He just ran, "Urokodaki-san, Nezu—" Tanjiro stopped his shouting when he saw his master's house entrance was completely wrecked. There was a trail off blood that came from the inside of the house and it leads to the forest.
Tanjiro stood himself firm on the ground, as he felt his vision blurring violently red. Desperately, he followed the trail of blood and he realized that he was getting farther away from their home.
That's when the trail of blood stopped and in front of him was a man with a broken sword in his hand. Multiple cuts littered his body and he was missing a limb. Realizing that Tanjiro had held his breath, for so long. He gasped and cough violently first before running towards the fallen man, "Urokodaki-san!"
He quickly kneeled next to his master, as he assessed the old man's wound. 'No—' It was too late, he had nothing else to do to save him. Why is it always like this! He is yet again late...
He couldn't save them again.
Tanjiro's eyes were downcast on the ground, but he looked up when his ears picked up a large gasp of breath. He stared at his master who was also looking at him. The old man smiled at him and a distance memory appeared in Tanjiro's mind—'It was him.' He begun, 'The man who had saved him five years ago.'
His mind recalled his younger self sprawled on the ground while two men walked slowly towards him. He thought it will be the end of him back then, but someone saved him. However, instead of staying and thanking the man. Tanjiro ran away and when he returned to the place where he last saw his saviour. There was only the white mask there with a red sun design on it.
Tanjiro gritted his teeth, as his hand reached out towards the mask on the side of his face. 'He had save me back then and I hadn' t replayed him yet.' He sadly thought,'I owe a lot of things to him and—'
"Tanjiro," The teen was snapped out of his thoughts when the voice of his master called out to him. His crimson eyes glanced at the old man laying in front of him. Despite Urokodaki-san's last moments, he still wore that smile on his face.
His master took a huge breath, "Sorry...I couldn't save Nezuko... He was strong..." Urokodaki-san told him, his voice growing quiter and all Tanjiro could do was cried in frustration, sadness and anger.
"Rest easy now, master." He sincerely told his master, as he reached out his hand to close his master's eyes when they had finally dimmed and darkened, "I promise to avenge you and get my sister back."
Tears blurred his vision, as he realized once again that he had lost his family again. Now a new promise had been made, will he broke it again like he did to his other promises?
Or he will finally killed that monster!
He stayed their for hours, as he cried all his tears out.
"..."
Tanjiro had finished burying his master. He stabbed the shovel that he had used on the dirt, as he inspected the grave he had made to his father figure for the three years of his life.
Flowers surrounded the grave and a tombstone with his master's mask on it decorated the burial site. Tanjiro smiled, his eyes full of melancholy, as he clapped his hands together and bow.
'Rest in peace, master. Don't worry about me.' He prayed silently and he added his last words, 'I will save my sister and avenge you. So, don't fret over me, okay.'
"Thank you for everything." He whispered, as he pulled away his clasped hands from each other. He stood straight up, bowing once again before entering the house.
In the living room, a table full of food was seen. Tanjiro find it not funny that the food survive the sudden attack while his two precious people was taken away from him again.
Not protesting, he sat down and begun eating the food. Tears slipped down from his eyes when he knew that his master had prepared this meal to him as a celebration to him passing the Final selection.
When he was done munching on his food, a determined look appeared on his face.
"Nezuko, I will save you." He stated with a firm voice; then, he added. "Muzan... I will end you myself!"
After eating, Tanjiro lifted up the plates and washed them. He then took a warm bath and only wore his black pants when he came out of the bathroom. He made his way to the living room, but stopped when he noticed a package.
Curious, the redhead picked it up and rip it open. His eyes widened when he saw two dual hatchets in the package.
Tanjiro inspected the grips of the two blades and his eyes widened when the blades slowly changed colour.
The blades are now black and his mind recalled Urokodaki-san's promise to him.
A small smile came up to his lips, as he held the handle a little bit tighter.
The ringing of bells was heard troughout the field. A man wearing a wide cone shape hat with many chimes attached to it was taking slow steps, as his feet walked on the dirt road.
Farmers would stare at him, as he walked by. However, his face can't be seen because of the red mask he's wearing. Although, a angry black aura surrounded the man.
Suddenly out of nowhere, he screamed out loud. "Where is that, kid!" A growl escaped his throat, "When I visited the home that he was staying at, he wasn't there!"
Tanjiro sneezed loudly making the crow that was about to perch on his shoulder jump in shock. 'Is someone talking about me?' He thought, as he fixed his master's blade that was on the belt of his Demon slayer corps uniform. Realizing that it might not be nothing, Tanjiro shrugged it off.
He was sitting on a large rock, resting a little bit. He was two villages away from Mt. Sagiri and now he decided to rest first.
Tanjiro sighed, as he arched his neck up to see the bright sun. He then noticed an itch on his neck and his eyes glanced at his fingers that was dripping of blood.
'These rashes are getting much itchier.' He angrily growled, but he stopped when his crow suddenly shouted.
"Kamado Tanjiro!" It said, turning its head towards the aforementioned. "Here are your orders!"
"Make your way to a town to the northwest! Young girls have been vanishing there!"
As he heard that, Tanjiro realized what this was.
"Hunt down the demon lurking there and kill it! Kamado Tanjiro, prepare yourself well for this task! This is your first assignment as a Demon Hunter!"
Standing up, Tanjiro bit back a determined and joyful smile. "My first mission..." He trailed off, as he brought up his hand and clenched his fist.
Quickly, he grabbed his two hatchets and hang them in a holestor that was on his belt. He put it on his right side while his katana was on his left side.
After fixing himself up, he quickly run towards the given location. "This is the first step to find my sister and to kill him!"
