A/N: Short chapter this time. Sorry I was away from the story so long. Been following the dopamine. It always comes back here, but not for this chapter.
Peter came back a week after his interview. He had taken David's mad scrawlings and ordered and rewritten them into something much more coherent. It was so clear-cut that even I could understand exactly what they meant. "Peter… this is… I'm sure you understand the implications of this better than I do. These notes are… absolutely terrifying."
Peter nodded. "Doctor Harkness was brilliant. These notes… if nothing else, they prove the existence of… I hate saying magic but this is definitely an unexplained phenomenon which might as well be just that. Then he created an artificial single cell life form. Lastly, and this is the part that actually terrifies me the most about this, he manipulated a process that should have taken billions of years and made it happen in 5. That's… insane. No living being should be able to do that…" The shock on his face as he said that was credible and warranted.
"Yes. But the man was also a monster. A mad scientist, if you like. Really he was The Mad Scientist. You've managed to decipher his notes. What can you tell me?" I looked him over. He looked exhausted but excited at the same time.
"Steward holds all of Dr. Harkness's knowledge. Everything the doctor learned, supposedly without his personality quirks, which is why he locked Steward away. He felt that he should not taint him with his dark ways. So, Steward knows much but is basically ignorant of the ways of humans. So, if he were to latch onto me, he would get my personality." Peter looked hopeful at that, but I shook my head.
"The only person I would trust with Steward is currently under the protection of S. H. I. E. L. D. And I don't trust that group of assholes further than I could throw a wet camel on Jupiter. So he's out, currently." I looked somewhat disappointed at that.
Peter nodded. "Alright. So you don't trust anybody but that person. Why not?"
I chuckled. "Because everybody else has questionable loyalties, or," I looked directly at him as I spoke the next part, "a massive hero complex."
Peter blushed a bit. "I uh… yeah. I guess that's true." He still looked disappointed. Until he heard what I had to say next.
"Make one of your own. With the bad doctor's notes, you should be able to recreate a very similar experiment." I chuckled at Peter's shocked expression. "I'm trying to give people the power to fight. Everybody needs that. In the coming days it will be more necessary than ever."
Peter nodded meekly and went to Dr. Harkness's old lab to start working. I had a feeling he would get it done in days, rather than years. I went to Dr. Faust and asked him how our project with the portal gun was going. He said we were making leaps in progress and it should be field ready within a month or two. I then went to my office and started on the pile of reports and memos I needed to look over.
3 Days later
Peter came out of the lab in a black and yellow Spider-Man suit. He stared at me through the mask and then I watched as it receded from his head. "Sir… this feels like cheating."
"Well, only a bit. Hi! I'm Yellowjacket! Peter explained that I'm basically him but way cooler. This is exciting! Existing as a being instead of a concept is really cool and meta." A head popped up from Pete's shoulder and started talking. I just chuckled and shook my head.
"Alright. Yellowjacket, what can you do?" I was slightly apprehensive because symbiotes typically take after their names.
"I can produce venomous stingers, give Peter an extreme healing speed boost, we're connected on a genetic level. He could be torn to pieces, and as long as a piece of me remains, I can put him back together and bring him back from death. I also have Peter's powers and can grant him any knowledge and skills he doesn't have. I have the vast majority of human knowledge at my disposal. I'm basically a super powered and all knowing encyclopedia with some kick-ass fighting skills."
I raised an eyebrow. "And your food source?"
"Photosynthesis. I'm like a sentient plant. And sapient. It's really cool." He was actually very charming. It was a nice change of pace from the Klyntar.
"I need to go. The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has been gone for too long." Peter looked outside. I nodded. "Yellowjacket, colors to classic spidey." The symbiote changed to bright red and royal blue, and Peter swung off into the city for an evening of crime fighting.
