Black Manor
3 August 1984
Severus Snape was a man of time, he had never been late anywhere and exactly a minute before he was due he stepped out of the floo ever so graceful, only for his air of superiority to be crushed by a four-year-old crashing into his legs. With a childhood like his it was no surprise that Severus Snape had never felt any physical affection.
"Watch where you are going kid, you crashed into my legs. Now are you hurt?"
"No Sevvie."
Severus' face went rigid and he looked at the kid with horror and behind them Sirius openly snickered and Remus had the grace to at least cover his mouth but he couldn't control it. If anybody else had the guts to call him Sevvie he would hex them to Oblivion but he just couldn't do that to Amy. Not because he experienced the feeling of love for the child, no not that, it was just that she was Lily's.
"I can call you that right?Sevvie?Sevvie?"
Why wasn't he responding? And why were Remus and Sirius laughing? Also, who was Sevvie staring at with wide eyes? Why wasn't he responding? Amy shook him and it seemed that he finally looked at her.
"Yuh yah y-you can call me Sevvie."
"Thank you I need to test you so come with me."
Amy dragged him to the library where it seemed like Severus could see the door because he was staring right at it. So Amy brought them inside. While Amy explained everything for the 3rd time Severus was just gaping at Slytherin's portrait. Finally, he said something.
"Ok so let me get this straight we are not in a dream, you are being tutored by the Four Founders of Hogwarts and this is not a dream."
"No it's not a dream I don't know why everyone keeps asking the same thing, But I wanted to ask you if you would take offence to Salazar being my Potions tutor because you were going to do it first?"
"No of course not why would I be opposed to you spending time with Slytherin the best potions master of his time, collector of rare ingredients, discover of the uses of daggers in potions, inventor of the blood replenishing potion and founder of my house. Mr. Slytherin would you be ok if I could also join your potions lessons and offensive magic lessons, It would be my dream to learn from the best and I mean I understand if you don't want me to but I won't disturb I will just observe and help with practicals for Amy."
"Sevvie, Salazar doesn't like people who fangirl over him. Keep your decorum and chin up," Amy whispered.
"Hmm I don't think that should be a problem and you would make a good training dummy and also kid how many more are you going to tell. It was supposed to be a secret."
"Sorry Salazar but I think maybe two or three more people if my magic trusts them. And can we start the lessons today?"
"Of course kid on Mondays starting with today you will be with me. Tuesdays you will be with Rowena, Wednesdays you will have a break to finish the work we give you, Thursdays you will be with Helga and Fridays with Godric. The weekend is to catch up on the homework from Helga and Godric. And then we repeat. You will have holidays when you return to the Potter Manor because too many people come to the Manor so we can't train there. Any questions?"
"I understand the schedule but will I be able to use my wand when I am not in any of your presence?"
"No, because the core of your wand is connected to us so you won't be able to train without us unless you get your own wand which you have to wait for another 7 years."
"Also when I go to Hogwarts how will you train me?"
This time Godric answered. "I do not think that you will need our training after your 11th birthday. Our job is to manifest your magic and help you identify your skills. I can sense that we will be gone when your Magic matures for the first time."
"But you can't go I need you what if I need your advice after my 11th birthday? Please don't abandon me."
"Seriously Godric why did you have to tell the kid we could've done it later. It's not even time yet. Don't worry youn Amethyst you shall be our apprentice for 7 years and then we will say our goodbye. Goodbyes are always bittersweet, we will be gone and you will be in our Hogwarts where you will be with our magic."
"I love you guys," Amy said with tears in her eyes.
"We tolerate you too," Salazar said.
Amy laughed. It had been only 2 days since she had found the room but she loved the founders already. Salazar was the King of dark humour, Rowena said everything in a matter of fact tone with a bossy attitude, Godric was hilarious and straight forward, but Amy had grown very close to Helga. Helga was the link that kept the other three together. While the other three had made a point to flaunt at times mostly Salazar and Rowena, Helga never flaunted. You would think that she is the weakest of the four but she was the strongest keeping all of them together even if it meant she would have to appear weaker. Amy loved Helga and made a point to be like her.
Potions laboratory
Black Manor Dungeons
Because it was the first day she would not be brewing something too complicated, only a simple Boils Cure potion. They started off by naming all the most used ingredients and tools. Then she started on the potion. With the help of Sevvie who helped her get the ingredients from the top shelves Amy had diced, sliced, crushed and minced everything that was needed. Now she was to brew.
Using her excellent memory to her advantage Amy replayed a memory of her mother brewing the potion. Immediately she noticed that the third step was wrong.
"Hey Salazar you wrote it wrong the third step is supposed to be to add 4 crushed snake fangs to the cauldron before lowering the heat."
"Good job kid so you read the book I advised?"
Amy looked sheepish she didn't remember being assigned a book but not wanting to disappoint her teacher on her first day she nodded.
"I didn't assign any book to you and so you didn't read anything, now why would you lie to me?"
"I thought you would be disappointed so I nodded."
"Hmm," said Severus "than how did you know how to brew it?"
"I have a good memory and I remembered watching Mum brew it so I replayed the memory for guidance."
"Good job, that is exactly what I wanted to hear Amethyst, when you told me your Mum is a potions supplier for 's I wanted to test you. Now begin your potion, I expect nothing less than perfection."
The rest of the potions passed without incident and in the end Amy had a perfect Boils Cure potion which Salazar deemed acceptable, so Amy knew she did well. After lunch Amy headed down to her Study where she summoned Salazar and they started on Mind Magics.
"You are a natural Occulemens so we don't have to worry about your shields which I highly doubt anybody but a 7th grade Occulemens can penetrate so we can get started on building you a Mindscape. A Mindscape will be a place where you will organize your memories so you can access them even faster. Mindscapes can be anything from a bookshelf to a castle but make one that will work for you. We will also be adding a pensieve in your mind so you can replay your memories for someone without needing a physical Pensieve. Mind Magic is very tiring so you will go straight to sleep after we are done. When you wake up you will meditate for 10 minutes, review your Mindscape and then start your day. Before you go to sleep you will do the same. Let's get started."
Amy imagined herself in the Black Library and organized her memories on the shelves instead of books. That was the easy part, but the hard part was making a pensieve. When she was done she had a marble pensieve in the centre of her Library and she was utterly exhausted. Salazar was right this was really hard. Amy brought her self up which was a miracle and she fell on her bed fast asleep. When she woke up she found herself tucked in.
She went to the breakfast nook where she found the three men laughing together. Severus had changed into grey robes and he certainly looked less intimidating and much more handsome. They had already begun eating, so Amy joined them, she had an hour before her last class of the day. Dinner was very nice and Amy was going to go down to the kitchens to thank them when she had free time after her defensive Magic classes.
"Protego is the most wildly known shield charm in duelling. There are many variations of the Protego charm but they all have the same goal to protect the caster. The wand movement is like the letter U and the incantation is Pro-TAY-go, with emphasis on the second syllable. Now first say the incantation and then say the incantation with a wand movement."
Amy said the incantation and then directed her magic to the wand and said, "Protego!" and an invisible barrier shot up, while she couldn't see it she could feel it.
"Impressive I didn't expect you to get a stable shield up that too in your first try. It takes people much older than yourself, days or weeks to master."
Amy had practised all the simple charms from the first years textbook and had mastered them in her first try and only the levitation charm took her two tries. Her favourite was the Ventus charm which felt very natural to her.
"I was not expecting you to be able to master the spell this fast but we have enough time to get two more spells in our schedule. The next spell is another variation of Protego, but this charm will form a protective bubble around the caster slowing down falls from the air or protect precious things. The wand movement is a little more complicated so don't be upset if this one is harder. The wand movement is like a horizontal line with a loop. The incantation is Pro-TAY-go SPH-ero, put pressure on the second syllable like Protego and on the second word emphasize the first syllable."
The incantation was easy to remember and Amy said it right. Taking a deep breath Amy directed her magic to her wand and said, "Protego Sphero!" and blue light came out of her wand forming a bubble around her. The bubble had hexagons and felt strong. She let go after a few seconds letting her magic calm.
"I am pleasantly surprised this spell took me 5 tries to master and I was a duelling champion having invented many spells by myself."
"Thank you, Salazar."
"We have one last spell before you will be dismissed, I was not going to teach you this spell for some time but it seems that you are a natural. This spell has no wand movement and the incantation is also very simple Expecto Patronum, but the hard part is finding the magic within yourself to cast it. Our portraits were informed on modern history with an impressive charm that Rowena had invented. Dementors guard Azkaban the wizarding prison. Dementors are foul creatures created after my time. They will suck your soul and no disguise will prove effective against them. Only the patronus charm can be used to protect against them. To produce a patronus you will need to think of a happy memory at times when you feel sorrow and coldness. Dementors make you relive your worst memories and to fight them you have to relive your happiest memory. Now I want you to try it yourself."
Amy thought about her happiest memory, she had many happy memories but none of the stood out to her. Finally, she chose a memory of herself laughing at a Ron with pimples and buck teeth the result of Fred and George's prank.
"Expecto Patronum!" But nothing happened not even a spark and she found herself thoroughly disappointed.
"It's ok Amethyst I was expecting these results. While you are an extremely mature child for your age you are still four years of age. Happiness is a pure emotion. You still can't sort out your emotions. The patronus charm can only be conjured by a memory truly pure. Pure happiness isn't influenced by jealousy, spite anger or revenge. Those emotions would make you feel satisfaction not happiness. That's it for today I want you to think about your emotions. Give me a foot on dementors and 11 inches on different protegos."
Amy left the training rooms feeling disappointed. She went to her room and changed into her night clothes and then went straight to the kitchens.
"Why is Missy Amethyst coming to the kitchens. Does she need anything?" Lucien asked.
"No Lucien I just wanted to say thank you to all of you for helping us. I am sorry I didn't come earlier."
"No Missy Amethyst we house elves is doing our job we don't need thank you for helping the house we are bonded to."
"I was wondering if you guys would teach me how to cook because it would be really useful to learn. And how do you guys cook so well? How do you guys pop everywhere I thought the Manor has anti-apparition wards?
"I think Thibault could answer Missy Amethyst's questions better than Lucien can or any other elves. For your question we elves use elven magic which is different from a wizard magic. Silly wizard rules don't affect us and we just ignore wizard wards. We are bonded to a family of wizards and if we are not bonded to a wizard we will fade away and so will our magic. That's all I know but Thibault knows more than Lucien. Thibault!"
Thibault was an old looking elf almost as old as Kreacher but not quite.
"Hello Thibault, I love learning about Magical creatures and according to everyone you are the most knowledgeable on elven magic origins. Would you care to explain it to me?"
"Of course Miss Amethyst I would be honourful if you wanted my help, though not many wizards think about us the way you do. Nobody certainly gives us that sort of respect you do. The last wizard to care for us was Regulus Black who earned the respect of all of us elves before sacrificing himself for a house elf."
Amy had heard about Regulus from Sirius but she thought he died because he wanted to quit being a death eater and was punished for doing so. Amy couldn't help her curiosity so she asked about it.
"We are not supposed to tell anybody but you remind me a great deal of Regulus Black. He was always good to us so we considered him our true master. When we would be punished he would heal us even as a child. He treated us like family not servants. He attracted a great deal of loyalty from us elves and I can see you doing the same young Miss. I think we should sit down before I answer your questions."
"How did Regulus die?"
"Kreacher was assigned to a mission for the dark lord. At the time Master Regulus was loyal to the Dark Lord but when Kreacher came back on the verge of death Master Regulus found out what the Dark Lord did and he asked Kreacher to take him there. Instead of sacrificing a house elf which many wizards consider spare he drank the poison and died leaving Kreacher alone in guilt for not being able to destroy the locket."
Amy was surprised to find out that Regulus died for a house elf, that earned him a great deal of respect from Amy. She still didn't understand the deal about the locket.
"Why did Uncle Regulus die for a locket, how was it so special?"
"Kreacher!", cried Thibault.
With a pop the grumpy looking elf appeared in the kitchen of Black Manor.
"What happened Thibault did you find a way?", asked Kreacher.
"No Kreacher but I found somebody who will help you."
Kreacher turned around to look at Amy with a sneer on his wrinkled face. "How is a filthy half-blood going to help me and Master Regulus?"
"Kreacher you will not talk to Miss Amethyst like that and if you do, you WILL regret it," bellowed Lucien.
"What has she done to you Lucien that kind of loyalty is only for master Regulus he was our Saviour."
"Thibault could see, he can see that young Miss will help us and help master Regulus, she is pure, she is the one!"
Amy was genuinely confused now and she couldn't understand anything but before the elves all broke into a fight she intervened. "Everyone please stop fighting and Kreacher I genuinely want to help you. From what I hear Uncle Regulus has not been given recognition for his help but if I can help you get him that I would be honoured. But you have to tell me the deal with the locket. Why was it so important that he sacrificed his life for it?"
Kreacher said nothing but with a snap a gold locket appeared in his hands. Amy recognized it immediately.
"That's Salazar's locket!"
"Yes it is, but the Dark Lord has infested it with the most evil of dark magic and it has to be destroyed. Kreacher hasn't fulfilled Master Regulus' last wish."
Kreacher told Amy the story and at several points Kreacher became hysterical but in the end Amy had tears in her eyes. Lucien popped her to her room and she clutched her little black dog in her little arms.
Amy fell asleep her face streaked with tears and her eyes shone with determination.
A/N: Next Chapter Amy meets with Dumbledore to talk about the Horcrux.
