Chapter 4: Castle of Lust: Act Two
(Noon) [Monday] April 11th 20XX
Shujin Academy
Hallway
"Yuuki, have you still not heard anything about Ann?" a girl with dark hair asked. Her brown eyes looked towards the boy with a reserved yet worried expression. Her hair was pulled into a ponytail by a pink elastic band, and she had a few bangs parted to the left. The sleeves of her beige turtleneck were rolled up to her elbows. Beneath the standard uniform skirt, she also wore black athletic shorts. She had elbow braces and a black knee brace on her right leg.
The spiky dark-haired boy in front of her cast his gaze to the ground. "I'm sorry, Shiho. No one seems to know anything, but she's not the only one missing. Mr. Kamoshida is a sub today for our class, even though Miss Kawakami was here earlier. The transfer student never showed up, and the coach has been ranting about him all morning. He even suggested maybe that's why Ann wasn't here."
The girl felt her arms shaking uncontrollably. "You don't actually believe that, do you?"
"...I don't know. There's nothing we really can do. We should just keep our heads down, but I'm worried," the boy said as he rubbed a bandage on his cheek self-consciously.
"Why do you say that?" Shiho asked in a quiet voice.
Mishima glanced around the hallway with a look of concern before finally speaking. "Mr. Kamoshida is in a nasty mood. I'm worried about practice today. We should be ready for the worst."
A hopeless expression crossed the girl's face. "I always expect the worst with him. I just want to know that Ann is okay."
"Oh, you're worried about Takamaki? Jeez, what's your problem?" A female voice scoffed, causing the pair to jump slightly in surprise as they noticed the other student.
"Shimizu, you know that Shiho and Ann are close. It's only natural that she would be worried," Mishima said meekly.
The short-haired girl bit back a laugh. "Close? The only person she's close with is Coach Kamoshida. She's probably not here because she's dealing with morning sickness."
Shiho balled up her fists as she squeezed her eyes shut. "P-Please don't talk about Ann like that, Hikari. She's not that kind of person."
"So she's not banging him? Or maybe it's not that you care about her, but you're jealous because you want to impress him yourself? It sounds like you've got your work cut out for you then. Rumor has it that he still hasn't finalized the team for the upcoming tournament and that you may not make the cut. Maybe you should be thinking about what you need to do to impress Coach instead of worrying about that slut," the girl said with a cruel smirk before turning and walking off.
Silence prevailed over the duo for a long moment before the boy broke it.
"...I wouldn't let her get to you. I-I think she's in love with Kamoshida herself and sees Takamaki as a rival," the boy commented.
Shiho clutched at the hem of her skirt. "Why are people always so cruel? Sometimes I think it would be easier if..."
"Easier if what?" Mishima asked softly.
"Forget it. I'm going to try calling Ann's phone again. I know she's not ditching," the volleyball player responded as she began to turn away.
The boy regarded her curiously for a moment. "How can you be so sure? Do you just have that kind of faith in her?"
"...Well, it has nothing to do with Ann's academic devotion. I was just texting her this morning, so I know she definitely left for school," Shiho said, glancing back over her shoulder with a weak smile. "Even if no one else cares, I'm going to keep searching till I find her."
Kamoshida's Palace
Dungeons
Upper Holding Cells
Ren and Ryuji found themselves trying to put as much space behind where they'd left Kamoshida as they delved further into the dungeons that lay above. They found a small river lined with cages hanging from above with cells on both sides from where they had exited.
The pair found themselves at a dead-end with little recourse and had to leap across the narrow waterway. Shortly after that, the boys found themselves having to utilize the hanging cells to cross another river section.
With each passing corridor, the pair met with a new obstacle. The boys often had to backtrack, utilize drawbridges or even small holes in the wall to progress further as most of the gates they found were sealed tight.
The dark-haired boy let out a small sigh before eying his companion. "Hey, you holding up alright, Ryuji? Kamoshida and those creatures did a number on you too back there."
"Heh, don't worry about me, man. I'm no pushover, ya know? How bout you? I thought it was curtains for both of us, and then you pulled out all that crazy shit,"
"Truthfully, like I said earlier...I think I get some of it. It's mostly just instincts. Like when that power awakened, I just knew what to do," Ren explained.
Ryuji rubbed the back of his head. "Whatever, I guess I shouldn't be looking a gift horse in the mouth. We can worry about it later. I know she can be a huge pain, but I'm worried about Takamaki."
"I know how you feel. We may have only just met, but I couldn't live with myself if we didn't do everything possible to save her. Especially after seeing what that Kamoshida guy is capable of."
"No freaking joke. He's just some washed-up gold medal winner that now coaches high schoolers, but he's still got this god complex. Even then, I've never seen him this nuts before. Like he's totally lost it," Ryuji said as he peered into a nearby cell before his eyes went wide. "W-Whoa teach is that you?"
The other teen quirked an eyebrow before approaching to stare past the bars to see what lay inside.
Inside the pair saw three figures. Two of them were familiar being Kasumi and Kawakami, who looked up with looks of surprise as they saw the two standing on the opposite side of the bars.
Ryuji, however, also noticed Morgana and immediately jabbed a finger at the strange critter. "Woah, what's with the cat monster?!"
"I'm not a CAT, and I'm not a MONSTER! I'm a human, and my name is Morgana!" the small figure practically hissed as it rushed towards the bars with an irritated look.
Sadayo let out an audible groan as she stood up and walked forward with a disapproving look. "Both of you knock it off already and stop shouting. Do you want to draw any more of those Shadows to us?"
Morgana and Ryuji shared a look of distaste towards one another but momentarily were silenced.
Kasumi's eyes widened slightly as her slightly exhausted expression was replaced with astonishment. "SENPAI?" She exclaimed before covering her mouth as she cast an apologetic look over at Kawakami before returning her attention to Ren. "...Senpai, is that really you? How in the world did you both get here?"
"That's a great question and one I wish I could answer. It's good to see you again, Kasumi. Shame it's not under better circumstances," Ren said, offering her a faint smile as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Yo man, is she like your girlfriend or something? Man, you just moved here, and you're already on the prowl. I didn't know you had it in ya!" Ryuji exclaimed as he patted the dark-haired boy on the back.
Ren let out an exasperated sigh as he adjusted his glasses. "Please ignore that he just said anything. I think he might have suffered some brain damage earlier.."
"So much for you staying out of trouble," Kawakami noted as she regarded the transfer student before sighing. "Not only are you in this nightmare, but you would be with the resident troublemaker of Shujin."
The former runner scowled as he folded his arms. "Tch, you're one to talk, teach. You're in here too and the one behind bars at the moment."
"Ahem, about that. Blondie and Frizzy hair? Why don't you let us all out?" Morgana asked with an impatient expression.
"Yo, I'm game with letting your girl out and even Teach, but should we let that hairball out? I mean, what if it's like those other creatures?" Ryuji suggested.
The cat-like glared at the blond scornfully. "I'm locked up in here too, or did you forget? How could I be your enemy?"
"Please don't worry, Morgana is definitely on our side. He's even explained quite a bit about this place since I woke up," Kasumi offered a reassuring smile at the small figure.
Kawakami leisurely patted the small critter on the head. "He's a good boy. Besides, he knows much of the layout of this place already. Which means he can probably guide us to the exit."
Morgana let out an unintentional purr from the physical contact before coughing awkwardly as he folded his paws. "That's right! Stick with me, and you might just live to see another day. There's a key on the wall next to the cell we're in, so hurry it up!"
In the distance, the sound of clanging armor was slowly approaching their location.
"There's no time to waste then," Ren agreed as he didn't wait for Ryuji's response before reaching for the keys. "Miss Kawakami, it wasn't just the two of us. A girl in our grade was with us when we entered this place, but they took her somewhere else," he explained as he unlocked the door before stepping back.
Ryuji cracked his knuckles. "Yeah, we left Kamoshida locked in a cell after Ren here kicked his butt, but his cronies captured Ann earlier before we got dragged into a separate cell ourselves."
Morgana pushed the cell door open, happily sighing as he stepped out. "Sweet freedom. Don't worry; we'll find your friend. Though I have to admit that I'm surprised you two were able to get the drop on a palace ruler by yourselves."
"A palace what?" Ren asked with a confused expression.
"Senpai, you probably noticed this place isn't normal right? This whole world was created by the real Kamoshida, by his warped desires. Somehow all of us managed to enter it," Kasumi said as she followed the cat-like being out of the cell. "The Kamoshida of this world is just a twisted manifestation."
"For real?" Ryuji asked with a bug-eyed expression. "Woah, that sounds nuts!"
Sadayo offered a tired expression. "I know how it may sound, Sakamoto, but after what I've seen...I have to accept it. Either that or I intend to find a good psychiatrist when all of this is said and done."
Their conversation halted as the clanking sounds grew even louder.
"Now's not the time for all of this. We need to move. I don't know if I can't protect all of you if we get dragged into a battle," Morgana said as he gestured at the group. "Come on. I know how to get back to the entrance hall. You guys have any clue where they took your other friend?"
Ren's brow furrowed slightly as they began following after the creature. "Before I passed out earlier, I heard one of those monsters mention that they were taking her to the Tower, but I have no idea what that means."
A frown crossed Morgana's large face as he stopped at the end of the far hallway. "That's not good. That's near the top of the castle."
"Wait, why would that have taken her somewhere like that?" Kasumi asked with a puzzled expression.
Ryuji shrugged. "Hell, if I know, Kamoshida and I guess this other version has got a thing for Takamaki. Fucking creep."
"I don't even want to imagine the things going through his mind," Sadayo admitted with a darkened expression.
"All the more reason for us to get moving," Ren insisted, but before the group could round the corner of the hallway, the growing clanking noise reached a crescendo as three more knights emerged from the opposite hall.
"The intruders are attempting a jailbreak! They must be detained or eliminated immediately, on the order of the King!" one of the creatures yelled.
Morgana hissed in annoyance. "You amateurs made too much noise and were moving too slow. Now we don't have a choice. Yoshizawa, back me up. We need to take these three out before they can call for reinforcements."
"Yes, I understand. I'll follow your lead," the Gymnast said with an affirmative nod.
"Wait, Kasumi, be careful. Last time did a number on you. Maybe this isn't the best idea," Kawakami said with a conflicted expression.
The red-haired girl offered a tiny smile to the older woman. "I promise I'll be careful, but I can't just let Morgana fight alone."
"Yo, what do you mean by fight?" Ryuji asked as she observed the lithe girl before scratching the back of his head in confusion as the knights continued to lumber closer.
The teacher shook her head. "I wish I could explain it, but even after our little friend here explained it, it still sounds insane. Just watch Sakamoto."
"PERSONA!" both Morgana and Kasumi yelled in unison.
Blue flames licked the ground around the pair as both materialized their respective personas, with Kasumi's attire shifting entirely. Behind Morgana stood a vast and imposing figure garbed in dark clothes covering its entire bulky frame and a distinct mustache. It wielded a rapier in one hand as its bright yellow eyes stared down the approaching figures.
"Prepare to meet the power of Zorro," Morgana said, flashing a toothy grin.
Kasumi smiled softly. "Cendrillon, stand by. We'll assist Morgana with these three."
"Woah, you two have those things too? That's freaking crazy!" Ryuji exclaimed as he stared at the conjured beings in surprise.
The cat-like creature let his attention shift a moment in surprise. "Wait, what do you mean?"
"Morgana-Sensei, watch out!" Kasumi exclaimed as one of the creatures transformed into a mounted knight on a steed before lunging forward.
Cendrillon suddenly shifted forward as if to intercept the attack, but suddenly without warning, Ren's usually reserved voice yelled over the commotion.
"PERSONA!" he cried as he suddenly was enveloped in blue flames as he simultaneously grabbed at his now formed mask. Suddenly a third persona materialized now in front of the charging creature, its large wings exuding a pressure that repelled the being backward with tremendous force. The other two shadows morphed into more of the odd-looking Jack O'Lantern like creatures before taking a position on either side of the mounted creature.
"Woah, so that's how you got the jump on the palace ruler. Not too shabby amateur," Morgana offered with a fangy grin.
The dark-haired boy smirked as he kept his gaze focused forward. "Remind me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the one who took his eyes off the enemy."
"H-Hey, it's not my fault blondie is such a loudmouth. I-I was just testing my new disciple to see what she would do," the Cat-like being muttered.
"I hope I didn't like you down, Morgana-Sensei. And I have to admit you looked very cool, Senpai," Kasumi said, offering the boy next to her a small smile.
A playful grin spread across the boy's face. "Well, I wouldn't be much of a Senpai if I didn't, right? Shall we then? We've got places to be."
"Right! Let's go, rookies, coordinate your strikes!" Morgana stated as he held out his paw.
Several feet away, Kawakami gave Ryuji a calculating look. "Aren't you going to help too?"
The dyed-haired boy seemed to wilt at the remark. "What's that supposed to mean? I don't know how to do that shit. I don't see you out there either, Teach."
"...I supposed that's true. I couldn't do what those three are doing, though. Morgana said it has something to do with the will of rebellion and facing your inner self. The closest I've come to that is a bottle of wine after a long day at Shujin," Sadayo said with a hint of sadness in her eyes.
Ryuji opened his mouth before surprisingly falling quiet as he returned his attention to the trio in front of them.
Morgana offered a toothy grin as he brandished a cutlass. "Alright, you two, let's shut these guys down! Zorro, show those wimps who's boss, use Garu!"
Suddenly the persona flanking Morgan flourished his rapier, which created a small gust of wind that propelled forward, slicing through the air in the process. It hit one of the two Jack O'lanterns, sending it to the ground. "That's what you call striking at a weakness. Make sure to take notes, alright? Now that it's down, it's time to finish the job!" he exclaimed as he hurried forward before leaping upwards and bringing his saber down upon the prone enemy. The creature let out a pained howl before the shadow dissolved back into nothingness.
"Nicely done, Morgana-Sensei!" Kasumi offered as she drew her weapon. "Senpai, we've got our own work cut out for us. Shall we?"
A chuckle escaped the dark-haired boy as he brandished his knife. "Arsene, Eiha!"
Suddenly the red and black persona thrust one of its arms out as a torrent of dark energy bubbled beneath the second Jack o'lantern before completely obliterating the creature.
"Woah, you really packed a punch with that one. Nice going, Kasumi. It's time to show us what you can do. Mop up that clown!" Morgana exclaimed.
"Right, Cendrillon, use Kouha!" the Gymnast said as she sprinted forward at the same time. Her glass-coated persona began to radiate light which surged outward.
The light appeared above the mounted shadow, slamming into it directly, throwing off the rider. Just as the rider hit the floor, the gymnast slid into striking range as she drove her rapier through the creature's head, causing it to erupt as it too dissipated into nothingness.
"Holy shit, that was some other level skills," Ryuji remarked with a dumbfounded expression.
Sadayo shook her head. "Normally, I would correct you for your profanity Sakamoto, but in this instance...I think it was warranted."
"You did amazing, Kasumi. I can definitely see that gymnast background now," Ren said as he approached her before gently patting her shoulder.
The redhead smiled in response as her face flushed ever so slightly. "It was nothing, Senpai. Most of this is just instincts."
"Heh, well, it wasn't too shabby at all. Now let's get a move on before more decide to show up," Morgana insisted as he once more gestured towards the end of the hall.
"That's probably a good call. I have to admit; I do feel pretty tired already. All of this feels like it's taking a toll," Ren said, wiping his brow.
Morgana nodded as he bounded forward. "That's only natural. The first time you awaken always leaves the user weakened. The next time will be much easier, and eventually, it becomes far less taxing. We'll just try to avoid as many fights as possible."
"I wish we could request help from law enforcement or some sort of bureau, but who in their right mind would believe any of this?" Kawakami asked as the group turned around the corner before starting down another dimly lit hallway.
Ryuji snorted. "Yeah, Teach, I don't think anyone would buy a word of this. Hell, I'm seeing it, and I can hardly believe it."
"I'm not so sure how much it would help anyway," Kasumi offered quietly. "I mean, how useful would normal methods be against these kinds of creatures?"
"Which is all the more reason why we have to look out for those of you without Personas and to find this other girl. These palaces are dangerous enough for those who can fight back, but anyone else would be almost powerless," Morgana agreed.
"Speaking of which, look over there," Ren said as he gestured in the distance at several more cells in which numerous people their age could be seen in cages or subjected to various forms of torture.
"What the fuck is going on here? Come on, we gotta get them out. I think I recognize some of them!" Ryuji said as he started to run forward, only to have Morgana grab the boy's pant leg with his paw.
"Hold it, blondie. You don't understand, and I don't have enough time to explain all of it but these aren't real people."
"Aren't real people? Are you saying these are what you called shadows too?" Ren asked with an air of uncertainty as he stared at the very real-looking people in the distance.
Kawakami nodded her head. "That's what he told us earlier. All of this is a manifestation of Kamoshida's twisted heart."
"So even if it seems cruel, there's nothing we can do to help them. This is how the real Kamoshida sees these people," Kasumi added.
"That's so fucked up. God, I knew he was a piece of shit, but it's even worse than I thought," Ryuji said as he clenched his fists.
Ren frowned deeply. "I wish there was something we could do to stop the actual Kamoshida. If these are his desires, who knows what he's done in real life too."
Morgana perked up slightly. "I might have a solution for that, but that can come later. Up this way, there's another bridge and stairwell not far from here," the cat-like being said gesturing before bounding ahead of the group...

Tokyo
Interrogation Room
"Are you certain the drugs they subjected you to aren't clouding your mind?" Sae questioned with a dubious expression. "A Castle, Shadows, Personas, and a talking cat? Surely you must understand how ludicrous it all sounds?"
Ren sighed as he slumped back in his chair momentarily. "Trust me, I know how it sounds. If I wanted to deceive you, don't you think I would have chosen a more believable lie? You asked for the answers, and I'm giving you them, no matter how bizarre it may seem."
The Prosecutor frowned. "In part, but I have noticed that you are still making an effort to avoid naming certain people. I assume you're protecting your conspirators?"
"This all comes back to me, Ma'am. If I go down, so be it, but I'm not taking anyone else with me," the boy replied.
"That's oddly noble for someone who identifies themselves as a thief," the woman remarked.
Joker offered a wry smile. "Anything I'm omitting is only to protect those I care for. It won't pertain to the integrity of my testimony. You may not believe this, but I'm seeking justice myself."
"Justice, huh? That's rather hard to believe. The litany of things you're accused of makes it hard for me to believe that."
"Japan is notorious for sentencing people regardless of their guilt. I'm sure you believe that there's a difference between an accusation and proof, right?" Ren asked as he arched a single brow.
Sae's eyes narrowed slightly. "I'm well aware of the way the justice system works in Japan and in general. Do you believe our discussion here is going to draw some hidden truth to the surface?"
"...I do, and when that moment arrives, will you believe it, or will you close your eyes to it?"
"Listen, kid, don't think you can try and grandstand with me. You're involved with a laundry list of crimes, and I'm one of the hardest working prosecutors in this whole damn city," the woman fired back fiercely.
Joker felt a smirk pulling at the corner of his bruised face. "That's what I'm counting on. I believe that you do want the truth. Otherwise, you never had to come into this room in the first place. I think that's because some part of you knows there's more to this story. Am I wrong?"
A moment of silence passed as the usually unflinching woman averted her gaze as she offered a pensive expression. "...I will admit some matters have given me pause and cause for concern. Though your answers thus far have been nothing short of insanity. How can I believe a word of it?"
"I know trust is hard to come by, especially considering how you probably see me. Why don't we make a deal? If you still think I'm crazy when my story is over, you can leave and let the system do what they will with me. Just give me the benefit of the doubt. That's all I ask."
The Prosecutor closed her eyes a moment before allowing her shoulders to relax visibly. "Fine. Consider it a deal, then. I will take what you say to mind before making my final judgment. In return, I expect you to speak nothing but the truth and the whole truth."
I am thou, thou art I thou hast acquired a new vow.
It shall become the wings of rebellion that breaketh thy chains of captivity.
With the birth of the Judgement Persona,
I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and new power.

Shujin Academy
Principal's Office
The heavyset Principal eyed the girl who sat in front of him with a pleasant smile. "Ah, Miss Nijima, what brings you here this afternoon? Could it pertain to the Student Council?"
The dark-haired girl bowed her head respectfully. "I'm afraid not, sir, and I apologize for taking up any of your time. However, there have been rumors spreading around the campus all day, and I wished to verify if they held any validity?"
"R-Rumors?" Kobayakawa questioned, slightly surprised before composing himself. "I should have known how quickly these matters seem to get around campus. I'm assuming you're referring to the disappearance of Miss Kawakami and several of our students?"
Makoto's brow knitted together. "Then it would seem the rumors hold some merit. I apologize if I'm overstepping my bounds, but I take security seriously as the Student Council President. May I ask if there have been any leads? Perhaps the police have determined something?"
"I believe this matter may simply resolve itself. I don't see it as prudent to trouble law enforcement prematurely if there is a benign reason," the portly man replied with a pacifying smile.
"B-But sir, we're talking about four students and a teacher who were either at Campus or seen on their way to Shujin before suddenly vanishing. If this is a legitimate case of kidnapping or disappearance, shouldn't we take precautions?"
Kobayakawa, with some effort, rose to his feet before turning his back as he stared out his window. "Miss Nijima, I appreciate your concern for your fellow students and staff. However, I must also consider the effect such an announcement would have on the rest of the student body. Such a sudden claim after just a few hours could cause hysteria. Furthermore, the students involved all have extenuating circumstances..."
The third-year student found herself biting her lower lip. "...What do you mean by extenuating circumstances, sir?"
"Mr. Sakamoto and Mr. Amamiya have violent records and are, for lack of a better word, delinquents. The latter was already on thin ice, and today was supposed to be his first day, and the former is to blame for the shameful dissolution of our track team. As for Miss Takamaki, there have been many unsavory rumors that have reached my ears. I wouldn't be surprised if she was simply ditching. Perhaps the other two are complicit in their absence. As for Miss Yoshizawa, due to tragic events, she's had several absences already. It's entirely possible she just left early. I believe she was meeting with Miss Kawakami due to trouble she's been having with her peers."
The Student Council President felt her eyes darken as her tone came out a bit more clipped than she intended. "And what of Miss Kawakami, sir? Even if what you said is true about the students, doesn't her disappearance warrant attention? For that matter, even if everyone is neglecting their studies, shouldn't the police be informed of students ditching class?"
"Enough, Makoto. I appreciate your concern, but I have made up my mind. Should none of them arrive by the end of the school day, I will contact the police myself. It would then allow the police to conduct a more thorough investigation and cause less panic with fewer students around. It as well gives the missing people time to appear. I don't want to make this academy into a spectacle over a few false alarms!"
The brunette bowed her head. "I-I'm sorry, sir, I'll do what I can to keep this matter from spreading any further."
"Excellent, and there's no need to apologize," the Principal said as he turned back to face the girl. "I know that you and I share the same principles."
"Same principles, sir?" the girl asked as her eyes widened slightly.
The heavyset man laughed heartily. "Yes of course. We both treasure Shujin Academy and would do anything to protect it."
The girl offered a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes before faintly nodding her head.
Kamoshida's Palace
First Floor
Entrance Hall
"So we're back to this place... Whatever, where to now, cat?" Ryuji asked with an exasperated expression.
Morgana offered a baleful look in response. "Are you an idiot? How many times do I have to say that I'm not a cat! I'm a human, just like the rest of you."
"I-I'm sorry to interrupt, but none of this is helping us reach Ann," Kasumi interjected hesitantly.
Ren nodded in agreement as his gaze shifted to the nearby stairwells. "She's right, Morgana. Can you lead us to the Tower from here?"
The cat-like being shifted uncomfortably before scratching his head with a paw. "I mean, of course, but It's not like I've mapped every inch of this place."
The former track star offered a deadpan expression. "For real?! I thought you were supposed to be some hotshot expert or something. You're telling me you don't know jack?"
"That's big coming from the idiot who can't even manifest a Persona!" Morgana hissed as he raised a paw threateningly at Ryuji.
Sadayo let out an irritated sigh before fixing the pair with a steely gaze. "Knock it the hell off, both of you. Arguing among ourselves isn't helping anyone, let alone Takamaki."
The two seemed to wilt almost immediately at the woman's sharp tone as silence filled the hall for a moment.
"Morgana, you seemed to have some general idea where the Tower is. I'm assuming you're less sure about what obstacles are in our way, is that right?" Ren asked as he crossed his arms.
"More or less. While most places in this palace are just warped parts of the real world, there are often obstacles not found in the real world. You saw all the gates, side passages, and even holes we had to navigate in the dungeons? I'd expect things like that the higher we climb. Especially the closer we get to the top, where I'm sensing the treasure," the critter replied.
"Treasure? What does that mean, Morgana-Sensei?" Kasumi asked with a puzzled expression.
The short-statured creature sighed. "I didn't have time to explain that yet, I promise I'll explain that all later. For now, we need to focus solely on saving your fr-"
Suddenly a bark of laughter cut through the room as a familiar silhouette appeared at the top of the second-floor landing before grinning wildly down at the group of five. "Oh, you wish to stage another rescue? Well, I'm afraid this is where your meddling ends. You've caused me enough headaches already."
"Kamoshida, you bastard! Did you enjoy sitting in that cell yourself? You better get used to it because when I'm done with you, you'll be begging to go back in it," Ryuji said as he started to roll up his sleeves.
"Sakamoto, as always, you're nothing but baseless talk. When it comes down to it, you can't do anything for yourself. You weren't nearly that brave when you were pleading for your life," the King smirked cruelly. "But don't worry, I'll remind you just how pathetic it sounded soon enough."
Kawakami cleared her throat as she pressed a hand against her chest. "Suguru, we know you have all the power here. What if we just agree to leave? Just let Takamaki go, and we'll leave you be."
"Wait, what? But what about everything he's done?" Kasumi asked with a horrified expression. "And it's not just his shadow, but the real Kamoshida too."
"It's time you kids wake up. No matter what all of this is. No matter what power you have, you're in over your head. I won't watch you get slaughtered fighting a battle you can't win. Sometimes you just have to accept the way things are. You try to help when you can, but we can't save the world," the Teacher said with a resigned expression.
"...Kawakami," Morgana whispered with a downcast expression.
"Obedient and submissive. Now that's my kind of woman and just like my Kawakami. Unfortunately, though, you all have tried my patience. You've trespassed, insulted, and even assaulted my person. There can only be one punishment for that, death," Shadow Kamoshida said as he snapped his fingers.
Ren's eyes narrowed as he regarded the second-floor balcony above them. "Something is wrong. Where are his reinforcements? Why is he here alone?"
"I'm not sure, but this still isn't good. I think we should fall back, and you all leave for now. I don't think we're ready to take him head-on yet," Morgana said as he grabbed at his cutlass in a defensive stance. "Besides, something does feel off here."
"No freaking way! If we leave now, there's no telling what that asshole might do to Ann!" Ryuji yelled, although he could feel his knees shaking involuntarily at the sight of the growing reinforcement on the landing above them.
Kawakami tensed as she seemed internally torn. "...Sakamoto, I don't know if we have many choices. If we die now, then Ann's fate really will be sealed."
Suddenly an almost identical voice spoke from behind the group, specifically from where the door to the main entrance lay. "Oh, Sadayo, don't you understand? The Master has already sealed all of your fates. Your lives are already forfeit. Master, shall I clean these intruders up for your pleasure?"
As the group split their attention, they turned around. Behind them was almost a mirror image of Kawakami dressed in a revealing maid's outfit. The only key difference was that her eyes were a glowing yellow color, and she wore far more makeup. In her right hand rested a Nata-Style cleaver, and in her opposite hand rested what appeared to be a green glowing skull.
"By all means, do my bidding and eliminate these intruders. Use the gift I gave you, and show them no mercy," Kamoshida ordered as a wild grin spread across his face.
"No way is that a will seed? What's she doing with that?" Morgana asked with a troubled and yet puzzled expression.
"What the shit is going on? How are there two of her? Oh wait, I get it, it's not real, right?" Ryuji guessed.
Ren nodded his head as he warily shifted his attention between the cognitive Kawakami and the shadows still on the landing above them. "...From what I gather, this thing is just Kamoshida's projection of her."
"Morgana-Sensei, you mentioned something about a will seed. Why do you look so nervous?" Kasumi questioned.
The Cat-like being shook his head. "Will seeds are coalesced distortions found within palaces. There are only three within any given palace, so they're usually kept hidden. We should be even more careful. They have residual power in them. I never thought a ruler would use their will seeds to strengthen one of their own cognitions. I don't know if we have what it takes to win, but even to retreat, we'll have to deal with her first."
"I believe you've had enough time to scheme, my master grows impatient," Cognitive Kawakami giggled as she suddenly squeezed the seed in her offhand, crushing it as an aura of energy seemed to surround her. An almost palpable pressure seemed to radiate off of her as her eyes grew even more manic. She slowly began to drag her cleaver across the ground scratching the marble and creating an ear-piercing sound before she suddenly launched forward.
The empowered cognition moved with such speed that the group could hardly register her movements.
Everything seemed to slow down as Joker saw a glowing butterfly out of the corner of his eye before he instinctively dodged to the side. He tackled into the real Sadayo just a mere second before she would have been beheaded. Instead, the Cognition's weapon tore into the boy's chest, causing him to let out a pained scream as he collapsed, his body shielding Kawakami despite his nearly mortal wound.
"SENPAI!" Kasumi screamed as her eyes widened in horror. The vivid sight of blood almost caused her to collapse as she felt her head pulsating. It was almost as if some memory wished to claw its way to the forefront, but she ignored the sensation as she forced herself to look away.
"No way, she's so fast. Kasumi, I'll help mop-head, you just need to distract her a moment. Just try to avoid engaging her directly," Morgana warned.
"R-Right, I'll do my best," the Gymnast said with an anxious expression. "Cendrillon, come forth!" Kasumi yelled as she grabbed at her mask. Once more, light shot out of the crystalline Persona hurtling towards the cognitive Kawakami. With little effort, it flipped to the side. It stopped to grin as it darted forward to engage the redhead.
"No freaking way. Is he? Ren.." Ryuji trailed off with a shell-shocked expression.
The King who watched from the second-floor landing grinned maliciously. "Oh, what's the matter, Sakamoto? Don't you realize you'll be joining him soon too? This is what happens when anyone gets in my way."
Kawakami felt her entire body shaking as she stared at the bloodied and battered boy that was collapsed on top of her.
Why? Why had he thrown himself in the line of fire? She was practically a stranger. She hadn't shown him anything resembling kindness. If anything, she'd been cold and even shown clear disdain at the notion of being his teacher. She'd even gossiped to that son of a bitch, Kamoshida. He was supposed to be some sort of delinquent, a troublemaker. He reminded her so much of him. She was such a failure. She'd failed another student, one that she had intended to abandon all along.
Something began to obscure the woman's vision. It took a moment for her to realize she was crying.
"P-Please, not again. If anyone is listening, I beg you. Don't let him die," Sadayo choked out as she almost maternally hugged the unresponsive boy.
Morgana slid next to the pair a few moments later before hissing under his breath. 'So much blood. I don't think Zorro has the strength to, huh?'
"Ungh, can't breathe," Ren wheezed, surprising the pair that he was coherent, let alone still alive.
Sadayo's eyes widened as she stared at the boy with a look of confusion. Her gaze trailed down to his wound to find it gone. "A-Amamiya?"
The boy offered a tired yet concerned smile. "You alright, Sensei? I was sort of afraid I was going to be too late, and we'd both be toast."
The older woman numbly nodded her head, deciding to let any questions pass for the moment as she blinked back any moisture left in her eyes and loosened her grip. "...I'm fine, thanks to your heroics. I don't think this means I'm going to go easy on you, though. Just help Yoshizawa, okay?"
"Right!" Ren agreed as he staggered to his feet before regaining his balance. He stared in confusion at the amount of blood coating him and Kawakami before slowly shaking his head. Whatever had happened, It could wait till after this was finished.
"D-Dude! Holy shit, you're alive?!" Ryuji exclaimed as a look of relief filled his eyes.
The dark-haired boy offered a weary smile. "For now, at least. We still have work to do," he said as he started towards where the Cognitive Kawakami and Kasumi were clashing.
Morgana traded a long look with Kawakami before shaking his head. "...We need to be ready to fall back. Taking this one down might take all we can muster."
"I-I understand, I'll try my best to convince them for whatever that's worth," Kawakami said before she watched the cat-like being take off after Ren.
Kamoshida scowled from where he stood. "What the hell is going on? I was almost sure that was a lethal blow. No matter, they're winded and weak. It's only a matter of time till she finishes them all off."
The Gymnast narrowly dodged backward as the cognitive Kawakami's weapon struck the ground where she'd been standing moments prior. 'I-I can't keep this up. She's too fast to hit with Cendrillon, but wasting energy leaves me even more exhausted. I have just enough to be able to dodge, but eventually, I'll slip up and end up like...' "SENPAI!" she exclaimed as she saw Arsene suddenly appear with its wings fluttering wildly, causing the Maid to slide back several feet as the boy landed next to her.
"Y-You're really alright?" Kasumi asked with a look of wonder as she stared at the boy before her.
Ren offered her a reassuring nod. "I'll be fine, but we still have our hands full. Morgana?"
"Right! It's time we use coordinated attacks. Teamwork is how we'll take down a stronger opponent," the critter exclaimed as it slid into place next to the pair.
Cognitive Kawakami cackled as she pointed her weapon towards the trio. "All the strength in the world won't matter if you can't catch me,"
"I hate to admit it, but she's not wrong. It was all I could do to dodge her. It doesn't help that I feel exhausted," Kasumi admitted.
"So let's get creative. Morgana, you use wind attacks, right? See if you can't slow her down. We can use that window to strike," Ren suggested.
The cat grinned. "You have a knack for tactics, huh? Not too shabby. Let's show her what we can do! Zorro, come forth, and use Garu!"
At his beckon, the enormous towering persona appeared before a gust of wind launched towards the empowered cognition.
"Poor little kitty cat. That plan would work if your attacks weren't so pathetic. Dodging this is effortless," the maid laughed. She quickly sidestepped the gust before intercepting the other two thieves, swiftly kicking Kasumi in the chest, sending the gymnast rolling across the floor. She promptly turned around and bashed Joker in the gut with the handle of her weapon.
With each subsequent attempt, the results only became riskier. After the third failed attempt, the trio could not stand as the maid loomed over them, brandishing her weapon.
"No. Guys... No freaking way it ends here.." Ryuji said as he fell to his knees.
A malicious grin spread across Kamoshida's face as he looked down at the boy. "Well, would you look at that? Another team you failed, and with one already sabotaged leg, you can't even run away this time. Sakamoto, I want you to look on as she butchers them before your eyes."
The real Kawakami stooped next to the boy. She had a pained look in her eyes as she rested a hand on his shoulder. "Sakamoto, don't listen to him. I realize now that you're a good kid. He took your passion and crushed it. Probably because he was jealous of a club outside of his own, was gaining traction. You're not a failure in my eyes, and I'm sorry for how I've treated you."
Shadow Kamoshida snorted. "Don't listen to that hag. She's as much a failure as you. Those without power are useless in this world. Sakamoto, I want you to know that these scum are gonna die because they sided with someone like you and her,"
"...No, that's what you are," the boy said as he stood up with a bit more steel in his voice. "All you think about is using people. Even that shadow of yours. You're the real scumbag Kamoshida, so stop looking down on me with that fucking smile of yours!"
Suddenly the blond-haired boy began to double over as a voice filled his mind.
You made me wait quite a while. You seek power, correct? Then let us form a pact. Since your name has already been disgraced, why not hoist the flag and wreak havoc? The other you that exists within your desires it thus. I am thou, thou art I. There is no turning back. The skull of rebellion is your flag henceforth!
Suddenly without warning, a mask bearing the resemblance of a skull appeared upon the boy's face.
"W-What? No! Not another one of them. Kill him before he can use it!" Kamoshida barked.
Cognitive Kawakami paused mid-swing before she could finish off Morgana before regarded the boy who stood opposite the room. "As you wish, Master!" she exclaimed as she launched herself forward.
Ryuji let out a howl of anguish as he violently ripped off the mask on his face, blood sprayed wildly from the effort. However, before the cognition could take his head off, a torrent of blue flames embraced the body and rocketed outwards.
"Come on, you two. This may be our only chance. Get ready!" Morgana ordered.
The pressure of the transformation sent the fake Kawakami flying backward. As she glanced up, she stared at the newly transformed Ryuji. The boy sported a leather jacket and pants, with a red scarf around his neck and yellow gloves. Behind him floated a small ship from which a Persona that resembled a pirate with a skeletal face stared back at her. "Let's see what you can do. It'll be no different than the others. You're all weak. And those who are weak have no purpose in this world!" she exclaimed as she shifted her stance before lunging at the boy.
A cocky grin spread across Sakamoto's face. "This effin rocks. Now that I have this power. It's time for payback. Captain Kidd, let's hoist the sails and give her the shock of a lifetime!"
The boy held out his palm as his Persona mirrored him. Sparks began to form and crackle before jettisoning forward. The maid tried to dodge, but this time she had no luck. The attack caused her body to spasm as she hit the floor and began to twitch violently.
"Nice going, blondie! Now it's time for an all-out attack. Show no mercy, it's time for an all out attack!" Morgana yelled as he leaped in with his saber, as Joker mirrored him with his knife and Kasumi with her rapier.
A laugh escaped the former track star. "Ain't no way I'm sitting out any longer. Let's finish this shit!" he yelled as he produced his weapon in the form of a large crowbar as he leaped into the fray at the same time.
Despite their inexperience working as a team, the group all seemed to be able to anticipate one another strikes. As they weaved around the target, each of them landed consecutive blows onto the prone cognitive Kawakami. It finally concluded when Skull brought his crowbar against her head, causing her entire form to explode and dissipate back into nothingness. An empty will seed simply collapsed to the ground where she had once laid.
Morgana picked the discarded item up before sighing. "Phew, that was a close one."
Kawakami offered a thin smile. "Just keep in mind that it's not over yet. Still, I have to admit that was impressive."
"It is thanks to all of you, especially Ryuji. You pulled through when it counted," Ren said, offering the other boy a thumbs up.
"Yes, that was incredible, Ryuji. You should be proud of yourself," Kasumi said with a dazzling smile.
"Shit, don't say things like that. It's freaking embarrassing. I just couldn't let you guys have all the fun, right? So what'ya say we bring down the King and save Takamaki now?"
"N-No, there's no way," Kamoshida sputtered as he stared down at the group before roaring out from the landing above them. "Guards! Come forth, and eliminate these intruders once and for all. Show them no quarter!"
Suddenly a large mass of shadows began to materialize upon the second-floor landing, while more began to appear from adjacent corridors connecting to the Entrance Hall.
"I was afraid of this. It's like I said, we have no choice. You all keep going that direction. It will lead you back to your world," Morgana said as he gestured at the main entrance.
"What? No freaking way. I'm ready to fight anything to save- Woah...I don't feel so..." Ryuji trailed off and nearly collapsed if it wasn't for Ren, who shouldered the blond.
Kasumi offered a pained expression. "I'm sorry, but we have to listen to Morgana-Sensei. We're all exhausted, and you need time to recover too. As you can tell, it really takes a toll."
"What about you, Morgana?" Ren asked as he warily scanned the approaching figures. "What's your plan? And how do we get back?"
The critter sighed. "I'm going to try and lose these guys and then find more out about your friend. I'll be in touch. Now go while you still can."
"Sakamoto, trust him, okay? We don't have a choice right now," Kawakami pleaded as she started forward with Kasumi.
"Tch, dammit. Fine! But This isn't over. Not by a long shot," the former track star seethed as he leaned into Ren for support.
Ren traded a solemn nod with Morgana before quickly helping his new friend as they gave chase after the two women. "You have my word Ryuji. No matter what, we'll bring Ann back."
Kamoshida's Palace
Tower
Chamber of Lust
Ann let out a scream of anger as she shouldered into the large reinforced door. However, for all her effort, her only reward was a sharp pain. The door in question didn't even budge and seemed sealed from the outside. "No way, now what am I supposed to do?" she said as she grabbed at her twintails before glancing around the ornate bedroom. Bars lined the only window in the room and were far too close together for anyone to slip through.
'Even if I took dieting seriously, there's no way I'd ever fit through those. Not like it matters, those jerks dragged me so far up, no way I'd survive the fall.'
"Like, why are you totally freaking out?" an oddly familiar voice asked, instantly drawing the teen's attention.
The model felt her mouth fall open in surprise as she saw a mirror image of herself standing before her, save her doppelganger was scantily dressed. She only wore pinkish-purple leopard print undergarments and what appeared to be a tiara rested on her head, nestled between a pair of fake cat ears. "W-What the heck is going on? Who are you?"
A giggle escaped the cognitive Ann as she twirled in place. "Duh, isn't it obvious? I'm you silly. Just better because I'm my darling's ideal Ann."
"Ideal Ann? What does that mean?" the girl questioned with a wary expression.
"Like how do I explain it?" the cognition asked as she stalked forward before stopping directly in front of her real counterpart. "See, King Kamoshida is just full of passion. He just has these urges and wants to act on them. He's such a perv, and so I was created to fulfill all his desires."
Ann bit her lip as she felt bile in her stomach. "So he just sees me as just a toy he can screw around with? I-I don't care what the hell is going on, but I'm not going to be his plaything."
"Not even to protect me?" A voice asked as Ann registered the sound of shackles clanking against the floor. She turned to see what appeared to be her best friend in chains. The dark-haired girl wore a scantily clad playboy bunny-like attire that wasn't too different from her doppelganger. As Shiho looked up to stare at Ann, the blonde noticed how hollow her eyes seemed.
"S-Shiho?" Ann croaked out as she felt her legs shaking before she collapsed to her knees. "Is that actually you, or is it just this place playing tricks on me?"
The girl in question offered an unsettling grin. "Ann, you shouldn't be scared. King Kamoshida will take good care of you just like Princess Ann here. He is so thoughtful and generous. If I satisfy him, he doesn't even beat me."
The fake Ann giggled as she stood up before walking over and yanking the shackled Shiho by her collar. "Aww, don't kid around. You know you like being beat by him because it means you get his attention. You're just such a greedy bitch like that."
Ann managed to make her way back to a standing position as she stepped back from the pair. "You're both fakes. The real Shiho is too kind and caring for her own good, but deep down, she'd rather die than to be that bastard's toy," she spat before glaring at her doppelganger. "And you're nothing like me either. I'm not just some cheap girl he can screw around with."
Suddenly the door cracked open, and the Komashida's silhouette slowly crept through the doorway.
"You're way too mouthy to be my Ann. And you're not nearly as submissive enough to be as good a slave as Shiho, but I do have another purpose for you," the sinister voice as the King's golden eyes made the teen shiver in response.
"You're not real either, are you? None of this is real…" Ann said as she shook her head in denial as she clutched her head frantically.
The King and the other two cognitions laughed in unison at her comment.
"We're in my world, and anything I can conjure is very much real," the Shadow Kamoshida grinned darkly. "Don't worry, as I said. I have a purpose for you. Those so called friends of yours abandoned you, but I get the impression they might invade my castle again. When they come for you, I'll be ready."
Ann's eyes widened in horror. "N-No, please, Kamoshida, leave anyone else out of this. Why are you doing this anyway?"
A dark chuckle escaped the man. "You still don't understand, do you? This is my castle, and I will punish any intruders without mercy. Don't worry though, once I'm done with them; I may just keep you around. You seem feisty now, but I bet watching people you know get slaughtered might just break that will, and if not, I can always get creative."
*Author Note*
Phew another chapter done. I hope the fight scenes were alright, I don't consider it a strong suite of mine but I was quite proud of the character interactions and moments together. Again a huge shout out to Pettypunk for helping me beta this. Please if you can drop me a favorite and review, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Review Section:
JaeCee: Awesome start! It's so refreshing to see stories that re-imagine the plot right from the get-go. Novelization of games are nice and all, but Persona games are already so long and fleshed out that a lot of retellings just tread ground already covered by the game. This one is already up to the top of my list of P5 stories to anticipate updates for.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Honestly this review really made me jazzed about writing this current chapter. I'm trying hard to have some iconic moments, and sequences still true to form but also to not be afraid to do new things. I think it's more fun for readers if there's always a sense of the unknown instead of being able to predict every story beat. Anyway thanks again, I hope you enjoy it going forward!
Zekyram: Good chapter! Can't wait for the interactions between the two groups when they meet the next chapter. But...hmm, yes I can see it happening. If Ann is in the Tower, then that means that the group will be forced fight their way there to save her...which means that there are many chances for Ryuji and Kawakami to awaken before they even reach Ann. And even Ann herself might be able to awaken, all throughout the first visit into a palace. Welp, let's see if any of these thoughts become true, or if it is all wrong and you throw me a complete curveball!
Thanks for another warm review. I definitely have some curveballs in mind. As for awakenings, I'm trying to space them out at least a little bit. I figured having everyone awaken at once would sort of trivialize how major of a moment is for that character. I'm very excited to share some surprises that are coming soon though. =)
UltimateCCC: Act One was very entertaining get ready for Act Two!I bet all of them will be awakened by then!
Not quite yet. Who knows what the future holds though ;) Thanks again for reading and reviewing!
RosyMiranto18: Ah, i just overthinking things in assuming that Kobayakawa also have a Palace separate from Kamoshida. that's where it come from. Other than that, have fun with your changes and see you later and Keep Update!
Haha no worries. I tend to overthink stuff all the time. Sort of wish we could have seen a Palace for Kabayakawa. I wonder what that would have entailed...
FoxOnPie: While I did like Sumire's Awakening, it's really disappointing that the whole thing still ended with her and Kawakami still getting captured. It was cool to see her enter separately from Ren, but now we're in a pretty forced situation where she ends up being a damsel in distress, either way. Even if that doesn't happen and she somehow manages to break out on her own, it should have been easy enough for this situation to be avoided if the two of them had just run away from the scene or if Sumire hadn't been made so weak that a single attack would knock her out, something that barely makes any sense, so it ends up disappointing, either way. The chapter as a whole was fine, but that really does come off as a major sticking point.
Hey I really appreciate the review. I never saw this as ever being a damsel in distress situation. We constantly see Persona users weakened after first tapping into their powers. Heck in P3 the main character is out cold for like a weak after their first time tapping into their power. I guess the awakening mixed with the uncertainty of what a false awakening means compared to a full one, made it justifiable. Also between Morgana being captured prior to the events we see in game, I think them being captured isn't unfeasible at all. I think characters having moments of weakness are important, it's what makes their moment of triumphant more cathartic. Heck to me it's what makes the awakenings in canon feel so powerful. And I have no intention of just relegating Kasumi and characters like Ann to only the role of damsel. It just fits for this narrative beat. Nor is Joker going to be the only one to save the day. Ren might be the MC in this story, but my intention is to give every cast member their due. But hey, I'm not upset or anything. If anything I hope you'll give this fic a chance still going forward and even if you don't, I hope you have a great day !
