Chapter 5
Fusion and Xyz
"You're a Pro Duelist? What's that?"
"Well, do you know what Dueling is?"
"Yeah. Some of my friends are into it."
"It's a game played all over the world, and every country has its contests."
"So if it's pro, then you make money in the contests?"
"Haha. Well, basically, yes. It must be pretty boring at the hospital. Do you want to try Dueling with me?"
"I dunno. You've gotta think a lot to duel, don't you?"
"It's easier than you think. Dueling is fun!"
"Hmm... It's brawn over brains for me. Like baseball. That's how I broke my leg, though."
"The hospital's really boring. I need something to do, don't you?"
"That doesn't mean it's okay to sneak out of bed!"
"Uh-oh. This is my sister."
"Hi, I'm Midori Hibiki. Nice to meet you."
"I'm..."
'Huh? When did I doze off? And that memory again... It's been coming up a lot more often lately. Well, it looks like dawn won't be here for a few more hours,' he thought to himself, resting against the pillar he had assumed guard position at the previous night. Leaning over, he began rummaging through his bag, finding some of the fried shrimp he had brought with him. Just as he was about to dig in, however, he heard footsteps running toward his group. Ducking behind the pillar, he glanced at the figure's retreating form, thanking whatever star he was born under that it had been dark enough that he didn't notice them.
'Unless my mind's playing tricks on me, that was Shiun'in... But what's he doing here? Did Leo send him after Serena, too, or... No... There are fugitives here. I need to go and warn them, but I can't leave Serena and Johan unguarded... I hate this, but I'll have to wait until morning to go after him. I just hope I'm not too late when I get there.' His moment of respite was short-lived, however, as a violet light shone in the distance. 'And now Leo's sending Yuri after us? That settles it. We have to get moving as soon as we can. If we stay here, it's only a matter of time until he finds us.'
Her eyes fluttered open as the first beams of daylight shone on her. Rubbing the weariness out of her eyes, she saw that he was sitting cross-legged on the ground, hunched over something.
"Good morning," he called out. "If you don't mind, could you wake up Johan? As soon as I get everything together, we're on the move. He's here."
"Why is that a problem?" she asked, confused. "Even if Yuri's here to take me back, I found you, so we can go back home now, right?"
Solemnly, he shook his head. "It's not as simple as that."
"W-what do you mean?" she inquired, cocking her head.
Sighing, he began to explain the situation. "I can't go back there. I found things on that night. Terrible things. Academia has begun to invade the other dimensions to capture people who, from what I saw, look just like you. He's made sure to pull the wool over the eyes of everyone that's not in Blue. To them, he's sending forces to the other dimensions preemptively because they're planning to attack us. It seems like there's someone that looks just like you in each of the four dimensions. The Professor needs the four of you for something, but I couldn't find any record of what that was, exactly, anywhere in the archives. So I'm keeping you with me for the time being. His plan will probably fall apart if he can't get all four of you, so that's reason number one, but more than that, I don't want you to get hurt."
"I see," she said dejectedly. "But before we go, what is that that you're working on?" she asked, poking her head over his shoulder.
"My secret weapon. Now, please go wake up Johan," he answered, in a tone that signified both that he wasn't going to provide any further details about what he was working on, and that the conversation was over.
"Fine. But just so you know, I can take care of myself. I'm not that little girl from five years ago anymore."
"I know. That's why it'll be yours soon."
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard Johan stammering behind him.
"Y-you're! You can't be...!"
Turning his head to face the blue-haired boy, he put a finger to his lips and winked. "Long time, no see. Unfortunately, we don't really have time to talk. I'll explain everything when things are a bit less crazy. Right now, we have to find Shiun'in. He passed by here last night. My guess is that he found fugitives from Xyz. We're going to help them."
"I thought you said that we were trying to avoid Yuri," Serena pointed out.
"We are avoiding Yuri. It just so happens that this is one way of doing that," he stated, picking up his cloak off of the ground and putting it on, pulling the hood over his head. "Now let's go."
How he'd waited for this. He'd defeated Shun Kurosaki shortly after arriving during the night, and now he was about to face down Yuto. What was that old saying again? "Revenge is sweet?" Right now, he couldn't agree more. Speaking of sweet, so was the lollipop he had just started sucking on. Blueberry was his favorite flavor, after all. Once the black-haired teenager activated his Duel Disk, he responded in kind. Sora faintly registered Yuya trying to talk them out of fighting, but he and Yuto both knew that there would be no negotiation, nor any understanding. How could there be? Beginning the duel, Yuto merely passed his turn, allowing Sora to make his first move.

"I hope that that's not the best you can do, because this'll be a really short duel otherwise," the blue-haired boy laughed, drawing. Looking at his hand, he pulled a card out and activated it. Polymerization. The sight of it caused Yuto's blood to boil.
"Just calm down," he thought, taking a deep breath. "There's no need to do anything yet."
"I fuse Fluffal Bear and Edge Imp Sabers!" he declared, sending the requisite cards from his hand to the Graveyard.
"You're summoning Frightfur Bear again? So you're just like Obelisk Force, then. Completely predictable," Yuto said with a glare.
"I wouldn't be so sure," Sora grinned. "Claws of demons pierce the beast's fangs! If you were to ask me, I'd tell you that life's hell! Speaking of hell, this monster just happened to come from its depths! Fusion Summon! Rise from hell, Level 8! Ruler of the Fifth Circle! Frightfur Daredevil!"

"Fine! Then Daredevil attacks Dark Gauntlets instead! You'll still take damage either way! Black Moon Chain!"

"At this moment, I activate the effect of The Phantom Knights of Fragile Armor. Since a Phantom Knights monster I control was destroyed, I can Special Summon it from my hand. I summon it in Defense Position."

At that moment, a bright light filled the area. When it cleared, Yuto was nowhere to be found, and in his place stood 3 new arrivals, all of whom wore Academia uniforms.
The one standing in the front wore a large red-and-white overcoat with the hood pulled over his face, concealing the upper half of his face from view. Sora had heard the name Koyo Hibiki used to refer to this individual, given that he wore a hooded version of the former champion's outfit, and no one was entirely sure who he actually was. Lending credence to the moniker, his deck was the same as Koyo's had been, including the one-of-a-kind card Elemental HERO Terra Firma. The only problem with the theory was that Koyo Hibiki was thought to have died seven years earlier from a terminal illness.
The girl standing to his left Sora immediately recognized as Serena, and the boy on his right wore a version of the Obelisk Blue uniform with a raised collar and white cuffs around the wrists. The unique outfit singled him out as Johan Anderson, currently the fourth-highest ranked student in the Academia.
"You're Sora Shiun'in, if I'm not mistaken?" Koyo asked, his voice betraying no emotion.
"So what if I am?" the boy retorted. Turning his attention to the Crystal Beast user, he smirked. "Johan, you saw that Xyz scum, didn't you? Why don't you take Serena and go after him? It's just like the Professor said. The other dimensions are trying to attack each other and Academia. We have to stop them. We can bring this guy in for questioning later."
"Shut up," Koyo hissed. "You know as well as I do what's really going on here. Academia is mobilizing an army to conquer the other three dimensions. And if you plan to bring me in, you'll have to defeat me first." Turning towards Yuya, he said, "As for you, either make sure to stay out of the way or leave, I don't care which."
Too overwhelmed at this point by the chaos of the last few minutes to really argue, Yuya merely nodded and stepped back.

Koyo said, his voice never changing from its monotone. To Sora, it sounded like he was bored. He'd give him a reason not to be soon enough, though.

The shockwave from the explosion caused by Nova Master's destruction engulfed the arena, blowing off Koyo's hood and revealing a head of brown and auburn hair underneath. "Or should I say... Judai Yuki?! Oh, well. I guess it doesn't really matter in the end. Once Frightfur Leo attacks, you'll die! Die! Die! DIE!"
The seventeen-year-old's face remained as blank as his voice had been. Ignoring Sora's remark, he continued on as if nothing had happened. "I activate a Trap. Elemental Mirage revives an Elemental HERO that was destroyed by a card effect this turn."

"You forgot lesson one again. Regardless, lesson two is simple. Don't play your trump card until you know you can win. I'll demonstrate. Watch closely."
"You should be a comedian, Judai Yuki!" he laughed. "Look at the field! There's no way for you to win this turn, no matter what you draw!"
"It's not about what I drew. What I just drew is inconsequential. What matters is this. I activate Super Polymerization! With this, I discard Elemental HERO Avian and Fusion Summon using monsters from both sides of the field!"
"That's...!"
"The materials are a HERO monster and a DARK monster! Wheel of destruction and raging god of fire combine their might! Fusion Summon! Claws of vengeance emerge from the darkness! Arise, Level 8! Elemental HERO Escuridao!"

Eyes widening in realization, Sora's skin went pale and he began to sweat. "Don't tell me that...! No! NO!"
Pulling the bottom card out of his Graveyard, Judai held it up for his opponent to see. Elemental HERO Burstinatrix. The card he'd set on the very first turn of the duel, which Sora had destroyed with Fluffal Leo.
"Lesson three. If you've followed lessons one and two... you've won. Battle. Escuridao attacks directly! Dark Diffusion!"
Sora LP: 3000 – 3000 = 0
