13th of October 1945 – New York City, New York
It was 9am in the morning when a yawning Scully unlocked the door to Mulder's apartment using the key he'd give her a couple of months ago. She'd been on call last night, and had been woken up at 4 in the morning to the sound of the rotary phone ringing. Unfortunately one of the other nursers working the night shift had been injured by a patient and they needed Scully to come in and finish the rest of her shift.
"Good morning" Mulder said smiling when she entered his apartment, "I was hoping I'd see you soon.
"Oh good you're up, I got called into work in the middle of the night and got off an hour ago. I'm all yours now though, no more shifts for 48 hours until Monday morning and I picked up two bagels on my way here from your favourite place" Scully replied raising the plastic bag containing the bagels, and walking over to where he was sitting at the kitchen table.
"Happy Birthday" Scully added with a bright smile, placing the bag on the table and positioning herself in between his legs, before leaning down and placing a heated kiss on his lips.
"Thank you" Mulder replied grinning back at her and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her further forward, so she was forced to sit in his lap. Bringing their lips together again he slipped a hand into her hair, and she slipped her arms around his neck.
"I thought we could just lounge around her for a few hours, then go out to Katz's for lunch and a walk around central park, before coming back here and having a quiet dinner in, just the two of us" Scully said when they parted breathing heavily.
"Sounds prefect" Mulder replied, before reaching for the bag with the bagels inside and asking "did you get the cream cheese one?"
"Of course. I know it's your favourite" Scully said placing one more kiss on his lips, before getting up and setting a bagel in front of both of them.
"Surprise" Mulder heard as they entered his apartment a few hours later, to find Byres, Frohike, Ellen, Charlie, Melissa and Maggie standing in his living room. Balloons and streams were scattered around the room, a sign saying Happy 27th Birthday completing the decorations.
Mulder opened and closed his mouth a few times in shock, before looking over at Scully who was grinning next to him.
"Surprise" Scully said kissing his cheek.
"Wow, I was not expecting this, thank you" Mulder replied finally finding his voice.
"We've got a smorgasbord of food, and I brought along some of my homemade whiskey" Frohike said as he and Byres came up to greet Mulder.
"Well how could I say no to that" Mulder replied smiling, "you're both looking well. How are you doing?"
"Really well, I'm used to the cane now and all my other injuries have healed" Byres said happily.
"Same for me, except for the cane. Plus we've been so busy with the newspaper, it's helped to keep us focused on something else except for recovering" Frohike added already grabbing some food to tuck into.
"That's great, I'm glad to hear" Mulder replied, before noticing Maggie was standing nearby and excusing himself.
"Hi Maggie" Mulder said greeting.
"Happy Birthday Fox" Maggie replied hugging him "Dana said chocolate was your favourite, so I've baked a cake for us to all enjoy".
"That sounds delicious, thank you" Mulder said returning the hug, before beginning to greet the rest of the guests.
A few hours later Scully deemed the party a success, the majority of the food had been devoured and all the guests had enjoyed themselves, although Byres did have to help Frohike out the door, as he partook in a little too much homemade whiskey.
"Thank you" Mulder said to Scully when the last of the guests had left the apartment, closing the door and wrapping his arms around her waist.
"Your welcome. Wait here though I have one more present for you" Scully replied with a twinkle in her eyes, kissing him softly before disappearing into Mulder's room.
"You didn't have to get me anything else Scully, the watch and the party were plenty" Mulder said genuinely, but obeying her anyway and taking a seat on the couch.
He was playing with his new watch when he heard Scully step out of his room and walk in front of him. His eyes went wide at the sight in front of him "wow, you look amazing".
31st of October 1945 – New York City, New York
"Are you ready?" Mulder asked, as he and Scully made their way up the stairs to his parent's house. Tonight was his parent's annual Halloween party, it wasn't your typical Halloween party, more of a formal affair with no costumes, but a masquerade theme instead. All of the New York elite circle had been invited, and Mulder and Scully's presence had been requested.
"As I'll ever be" Scully replied straightening her necklace and grasping his hand. They'd had dinner with his parents once more since their first introduction, and although it went smoother then the first time, with Teena seeming to slightly warm to Scully, the couple knew they had a long way to go.
Walking through the entrance the pair were greeted by a waiter hired for the night who held a tray of champagne. Looking round they could see the party had been set up in the foyer which also backed onto the largest living room providing ample space for the guests to mill around, especially seeing the furniture had been removed. The space had been sparsely decorated with all the chandeliers lit and a live jazz band playing at the back.
Grabbing a glass each off the proffered tray, Mulder slipped his hand to rest on the small of Scully's back Mulder guided her through the room in search of his Mother, smiling politely at the guest's they passed.
"Fox it's been too long" Scully heard a woman say before he was suddenly enveloped in their arms. Surprised Scully stood back and watched awkwardly as the brunette and Mulder hugged.
After what felt like an eternity to Scully the pair finally broke apart, and she looked to Mulder for clarification.
"Uh Scully this is Diana. She's the daughter of Dad's partner C.G.B. Spender, we've known each other since we were small children" Mulder said smiling and only just noticing Diana was clutching his arm.
He moved to wrap an arm around Scully's waist, before saying "Diana, this is my girlfriend Dana Scully".
The beaming smile on Diana's face fell, before she quickly replaced it with a tight smile and held out her hand.
"A pleasure to meet you, you've done well to capture this one. I certainly wasn't able to" Diana said in an all too sweet voice while wearing a smirk.
"It's nice to meet you too" Scully replied shaking Diana's hand, deciding to not respond to Diana's Jab. She instantly knew not to trust the woman.
"The three of us will have to have lunch or dinner together sometime" Mulder added enthusiastically, not noticing how Scully stiffened at the proposition.
"That sounds wonderful. My Dad is calling me over, we'll have to set up something for a few weeks' time. I'll talk to you two later" Diana replied running a hand gently down Mulder's arm as she departed.
A little bewildered Scully silently stood next to Mulder taking in what had just happened. Noticing her silence, Mulder turned to her and cupped her cheek, "are you okay?"
"Yeah, she just makes me feel uneasy" Scully replied looking over her shoulder to where Diana now stood.
"Don't worry she's harmless" Mulder said grasping her hand before adding "come on let's go dance, it looks like a semi dance floor has formed".
"Okay" Scully replied shaking off her uneasiness and following Mulder towards the band.
"I would have thought the woman who managed to snag Fox Mulder, would have been stunning and from a well-known family. I've never heard of her and she's quite plan, definitely not what I was expecting" Scully overheard a woman nearby whisper, as they began to dance and she settled her arms around Mulder's neck.
"I know. I always thought he and Diana would end up married" the woman's friend whispered back.
"Ignore them" Mulder said feeling Scully tense in his arms, "I went to school with those two, they're some of the most spoilt brats I've ever met, they've got nothing better to do than judge and gossip about other people".
Straightening her back and blocking out the sound of the women, Scully smiled tenderly at him and said "I love you".
"I love you too" Mulder replied pressing his lips softly against hers.
