It was Friday night and the group sat in their usual booth. Only difference is that now Seamus and Dean were sitting with them. She decided she would go work in Romania for a few months. Fred and Hermione agreed to write to each other.
She was going to announce it tonight. Her leg started trembling as she grew nervous, afraid of their reaction. She felt a hand on her knee and he gave her a reassuring squeeze. She looked up and Fred smiled down at her.
"I have an announcement." All the heads turned to her.
"I'm taking the job in Romania."
They all looked a bit shocked but a least no one yelled.
"I'm proud of you Hermione. You are going to do great." Said Angelina.
"Thanks Ang."
"Can we come visit?"
"Sure. I can't go a couple of months without seeing me favorite red head." She smiled at Ginny. She heard Fred snort, only loud enough for her to hear.
"Are you going to be back before the wedding?" Neville asked.
"I'm working there until the end of the year but I will come over for the wedding."
They all hugged and congratulated her.
After a few drinks and dances she made her way back to the booth and dropped next to Angelina. "Where are the twins?" Hermione asked searching the crowd.
"Don't know. George dragged Fred away about 10 minutes ago." Angelina said without any worry in her voice. "So are you excited?"
Before she could answer George reappeared with a wide grin on his face.
"What did you do?"
"That hurts Ang. Why do you think I did something?""Because I know you!" Hermione snickered at Angelina's retort.
"Fine, you got me there. I just "helped" Fred with the waitress from the last time we were here." Hermione chocked on her drink and started coughing.
"Sorry wrong pipe." Angelina turned her focus back on George.
"What? Why?"
"Because he likes her. He told me this week."
"And what did you do?" Angelina asked again.
"I looked them in the bathroom." He grinned
"Merlin George! How old are you?" Angelina slapped is arm. "That's your brother. If he wants someone or something he can get it himself.
"I will go free him." She laughed as she stood up. She walked to the door and with a quick spell she pushed open the door.
She saw something she wasn't expecting. The waitress Liza had her hands gripping on his collar. As she kissed him. When the door bounced of the wall they both jumped apart. Horror struck Fred's face.
"So this is what you meant about trying to figure things out!" Hermione yelled her face red with anger. Before Fred could answer she turned on her heel and ran out the bar and apparated to her flat. She closed the fireplace and put on wards as she collapsed crying on the couch.
"I got something to tell you. Come on" George said walking with Fred the restroom. "I know you are still working out you feelings and what not for that girl. But I thought you needed a little push."
At that last word he pushed him in the restroom and closed the door in a hurry. He pulled out his wand as he locked the door.
"Damn you George!" He tried to open the door. "Open it now!"George didn't answer and he searched his pockets for his wand.
"So here we are." He heard behind him. He turned fast and stopped looking for his wand.
"So why didn't you call me?" Liza pouted in a flirty way.
"I- I forgot. Sorry." He turned back to the door trying to get it open.
"Your brother told me you liked me." She strolled over and put her hands on his hand turning him away from the door. "I like you too."
Before he could understand what was happening she grabbed his collar and kissed him at the same time Hermione walked in. He pulled Liza away from him and looked in her eyes. Eyes full with tears, full with hurt as she yelled at him and disappeared. He wanted to follow her but Liza took his hand.
"Stay here. She not worth it." He pulled his hand free and ran out of the restroom. Looking around the bar he couldn't spot her so he ran outside. Still no sign of her. He walked back fuming in the bar and made is way to George.
"WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU THINK YOU WERE DOING'?" He yelled so loud everyone came back to the booth. "DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU JUST DID?"
George looked in horror at Fred. Fred never yelled at him like that.
"I-I-I thought you liked her?" George said quietly afraid of another outburst.
"Couldn't you just let me handle it? Since when do I need help with woman?""I'm sorry, you looked so out of it last week I thought I could help you."
"Don't need it thanks!" As he turned and walked out. Everyone looked in shock as Fred made his way to the door.
"What happened?" Harry broke the silence.
"Your brother is what." Angelina said still looking at the door Fred disappeared through. George told the group what happened.
"But doesn't it mean he likes someone else?" Ginny asked. Everyone looked up at Ginny in surprise. No one thought about that. After a couple of silent minutes as they all looked at the door and sipping their drinks Ginny spoke again.
"Guys? Where is Hermione?"
Fred apparated home and tried to floo to Hermione's flat. But couldn't get in. He tried to apparate to her flat. Also not a success. He then apparated in the hallway of her building and walked to her door. He tried to listen if he heard her but couldn't hear anything. He knocked on her door.
"Hermione are you there?"
No answer. He tried for 20 minutes still no answer. He put his back against the door and slid to the floor. He felt something poking him in his pocket. His phone. He tried calling her. Straight to voicemail. He groaned and dropped his head on his arms.
Inside the flat Hermione didn't hear a thing. She put a silencing charm around her flat and turned off her phone. She fell asleep crying. Tears still dripping down on the couch. Early the next day she wrote a letter and sent her owl Apollo away. An hour later she got her answer as Apollo flew in. She reached for the letter and opened it quick.
Good morning Hermione,
If you are sure, we can leave at 11 o'clock.
I will drop by at 10.55 with the portkey and we can go together.
Make sure you bring your essentials.
See you soon.
Love Charlie
She dropped her letter on the kitchen table and hurried of to the bedroom and started to pack. As she finished packing she gave her owl the address and some treats as he flew off to Romania. She cleaned up her flat and at 10.50 she opened up her floo.
Not even 5 minutes later Charlie walked in with his trunk.
"Are you ok? Why do you want to leave two days early?" Hermione didn't answer. She didn't trust her voice.
"Is it Fred?" Her eyes grew big as she looked at him.
"You know?" Her voice hoarse.
"I saw you two at the burrow and I put two and two together last Sunday.""Oh." Hermione looked down. Charlie opened his mouth but before he could say something the portkey started to vibrate.
"Time to go. Are you ready?" She nodded. "Let's go."
She placed her finger on the cup and disappeared out of her flat.
It was Sunday and almost time to leave for the burrow. Fred was nervously patting his foot as he waited for George. He was anxious, hoping Hermione would come to Sunday lunch so he could explain everything.
When George entered the leaving room Fred got up from the couch and muttered
"Finally." As he made his way to the fireplace.
They stepped out of the fireplace at the burrow and Fred saw Ginny curled up on the couch.
"Hi Gin. Everyone here yet?" He asked glancing at the kitchen door. Trying to sound nonchalant.
"No, Charlie, Hermione and Bill aren't here yet. But the rest is in the kitchen." She stood up and started to walk to the kitchen.
"Fleur and Victoire are already here. Bill had some last minute business but should arrive any moment." They walked in the kitchen and sat down on the available seats. Fred talked with his father a bit about his cellphone, his gaze turning to the door every other minute. After 10 minutes the door opened. He looked up expectantly only to see his oldest brother at the door.
"Hi sweetheart." Molly gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
"Did everything go alright?"
"Yes mum, just some idiot who looked himself in a fault." The others laughed as he sat down next to his wife and picked up Victoire and put her on his lap.
"Okay. Now that everyone is here let's eat."
"Uhm mum?" Fred began.
"Hermione and Charlie aren't here yet." Ginny continued.
Molly frowned at Ginny. Before looking at Harry and Ron.
"Mum?"
"Hermione and Charlie left for Romania yesterday. Didn't she tell you?" She looked surprised at her kids and Harry. Fred felt like his world was caving in around him. He stared blankly in front of him. He heard the voices of his family in the background.
"What?" Ginny yelled looking at Harry and Ron. "Why didn't you say something?!"
"We didn't know." They said together. "I thought she was leaving on Monday." Harry said while looking at Ron and back to Ginny.
"She didn't even say goodbye."
"That's not like Hermione. Did something happen?" Bill chimed in looking equally surprised.
"I don't know. Charlie just said they were leaving a little early and couldn't say goodbye." Molly answered and quietly added. "I really thought you knew."
They were all still discussing Hermione and Charlie's sudden leaving when Fred shot up from his chair still looking dazed. Ginny and George looked at Fred and then each other. Fred muttered something about "the loo." And made his way upstairs to his old bedroom. He dropped on his old bed and buried his face in his hands when he heard a knock. He looked up and saw Ginny and George poking their worried heads in the doorway before coming in and closing the door behind them.
"Freddie? Are you okay? Do you know why Hermione left?" George took a seat in front of Fred on the floor. While Ginny sat on George's old bed. Fred stayed quiet for a minute his head back in his hands. He looked up at George, his face crestfallen.
"Yeah I do. Because of me...and you." George frowned and looked at his sister who shrugged.
"What do you mean mate?"
"Because of your meddling Friday! It all had gone to shit!" He yelled at George and glared daggers at him.
"What? - I - I don't unders-"
"Ooh." Ginny interrupted when realization hit her.
"That's why Hermione was suddenly gone Friday." George looked between Fred and Ginny still not understanding. As Ginny saw his face she added.
"Fred doesn't fancy the waitress. He likes Hermione!" George eyes went big as he looked back at Fred. Fred just stared at the wall behind George.
"Fred?" George touched his knee so he would look at him. "Fred. Is it true?" He looked at George and gave a quick nod. Fred saw Friday night replay in George's eyes as he put it all together.
"Oh no! And I locked you in with that girl.. and.. and Hermione went to help you get out." Guilt rolling over George.
"Yeah. And she came in just as that girl planted one on me. I pushed her away." he added seeing Ginny's face. "But Hermione was already gone."
Ginny walked over and sat next to him her arm draped over his shoulder. They sat in silence for a minute or two.
"How did it happen? I mean you two?" Ginny asked carefully. Fred frowned before answering.
"That night of Harry and Neville's birthday at the Road Runner."
"So the girl you slept with. The best sex ever." Ginny cringed at George. "Was with Hermione?" Fred nodded.
"After everyone left Hermione got a text from Sam and she.. she needed a distraction. So I gave it to her. First it wasn't something more. It was just sex, a distraction for both of us. We were still friends like we were before. But 2 weeks later when I had my check up and we grabbed some dinner. Something happened, something changed. We talked about stuff no one else knows about. And after that I couldn't keep her out of my mind."
No one spoke. Both trying to wrap their heads around it.
"So that morning after the party. When I came over?"
"Yeah I was still there." Ginny's eyes grew big.
"Wow Hermione sure can keep up a front. Oh my god!" She yelled in surprise as she crunched her nose. "I slept in that bed that night! Gross" At that Fred first smile since Friday sprung on his face.
"You now see why it was complicated?" Fred looked at his twin. "Hermione isn't just any girl. She is like family here. What if I messed up? Just like I did now!"
"Does she know how you feel?"
"Yeah. I mean before Friday."
"Does she feel the same?"
"She did. And I told her to go to Romania."
"What? Why?" Ginny shoved him hard.
"Because we wanted to see this is something more and not just an aftermath of that night. We were planning to write and call each other and maybe in a couple of weeks I would go visit her. I tried to talk to her Friday and Saturday but she closed her floo and put wards up. She didn't even pick up her phone." He sighed running his hand over his face.
"And now she's gone and I don't know what to do."
"Freddie. I'm going to make this right." George got up and sat on the other side of Fred. "I promise."
