Chapter 4: The Thing You Love Most
Thea had just put her boots on when she heard a knock on Emma's door. Getting up, she peaked outside to see Regina standing there, holding a basket of apples.
"Did you know the honey crisp tree is the most vigorous and hardy of all apple trees?" Thea rolled her eyes, knowing her evilness was up to know good, "It can survive temperatures as low as forty below and keep growing. It can weather any storm. I have one I've tended to since I was a little girl." She grabbed an apple and handed it out to Emma, "I have yet to taste anything more delicious than the fruit it offers.
"Well, aren't you a regular Johnny Appleseed." Thea said sarcastically, causing both women to turn toward her. She looked down at the basket in the mayor's arms and laughed, grabbing the offered apple, "You've obviously been under a misconception your whole life if your honey crisp tree is producing red delicious apples."
Emma chuckled as she sipped her coffee, looking at the furious look on the mayor's face, "Is there something I can help you with, Madam Mayor?"
Regina grumbled under her breath before handing out the basket, "I'm sure you and your little entourage will enjoy them on your way home."
"You wish." Thea chuckled as she shoved the basket back at Regina, "First, I make a firm policy of never accepting food from a stranger. Let's call it a quirk of my chosen profession." She smirked, "No offense. Second, we're going to be staying for a little while. I guess you'll just have to get used to us."
"I'm not sure that's such a good idea. Henry has enough issues. He doesn't need you confusing him."
"We're the ones confusing him?" Narissa laughed as she came of the room, "Your the one offering apples. Isn't that what the Evil Queen did to Snow White? I mean, you're so adamant about Henry's book being nothing but fairy tales, but, here you are." She look down at the basket, "Red delicious. My favorite." She looked back up, ignoring the look of hatred from Regina, "But I don't take treats from someone who clearly doesn't like us."
"With all due respect, Madam Mayor, this is the second time you've threatened me in 12 hours. It kinda makes me want to stay long." Emma looked at her friends, "What about you?"
"I've grown so attached," Rissa smirked, "I've already called about property. We'll see how it works out."
"Since when were apples a threat?" Regina asked, incredulously, "And what do you mean that you've called about property? What property? Why?"
"Not that it's any of your business, but I'm thinking of opening a shop. As for why, well, that's private."
"And, as for the threat, well, we can read between the lines." Thea took a step forward, "I don't take too kindly to threats to my family, Madam Mayor, so I suggest you not do it again."
"Look, I just want to make sure Henry's okay." Emma shrugged, "Between the discrepancies that we have yet to discuss with the adoption and the fact that he's run away twice, leaves me a little concerned."
"He's fine, dear. Any problems he has are being sorted out."
"What does that mean?" Emma asked.
"It means I have him in therapy." Regina said with condescension, "It's all under control."
"Seriously?" Thea asked as Rissa pinched her nose in frustration, "Your idea to help your 10 year sold deal with an over active imagination is to send him to a shrink?"
"Aren't you Mother of the Year." Rissa glared, "He's not delusional, Regina, he's lonely. There's a difference."
"Regardless of your feelings, I am his mother.," Regina interrupted, "So, take my advice, Miss Swan, only one of us knows what's best for Henry."
"Yeah." Emma leaned on the door jam, "I'm beginning to think you're right about that."
Regina's smile froze, "It's time for you to go."
"Or what?"
Regina leaned in, ignoring the hand Thea put out to stop her, "Don't underestimate me, Miss Swan. You have no idea what I'm capable of."
"But I do." Rissa stepped forward and pulled Regina back, "You may not recognize me, Regina, it has been quite a few years, but I assure you, I remember you well." Regina looked up in surprise, "Does the name Gold sound familiar to you, dear?" The question caught Regina off guard as she looked closer at the red-head, "You took my family away from me. You made everyone think that I had died. Trust me, I know exactly what you're capable of."
"You're… his wife?" Regina took a step back in shock, "But, the restraining order…"
"Is actually null and void now that we have actually proof of a set-up." Thea smiled, "I got it thrown out by a supreme court judge. Now that Paige is 19, and legal, you have no legal right to keep her away. That's going to be between the family of three."
"I'm confused. What's going on?" Emma looked on, trying to keep up, "Rissa, are you from here?"
"A long time ago. I don't usually talk about my past. It's too painful. But, now that I have free reign to come and go around here as I please, again, I think I'm going to go talk to my husband. See if I'm going to be welcomed back in our daughter's life." She looked back at Regina, "You have no more power over me or my family, Madam Mayor. I suggest you remember exactly what I'm capable of and keep your distance." With that, she turned on her heel and stormed off, ready to finally face her past.
"I'll explain it to you in more depth later, Emma. Right now," Thea turned to Regina, "That's threat number three." She turned away to follow her friend out of the inn.
"Thanks for the warning, Regina." Emma smiled as she gestured to her friend's retreating back, "But, as you can see, I have strength in numbers and I'm not going anywhere. Not yet, anyways."
1-2-3-4-5
"Hey! Wait up." Thea ran down the sidewalk to catch up to her friend, "Are you sure? I thought you weren't ready for any confrontation yet. Especially since we don't know if they're going to remember you."
"Did you, or did you not, break into the sheriff's station, undetected, last night, and get any files with their names on it there?"
"Yes, I did."
"And did those files not say that I did have a cursed self, even though I wasn't curse, and that Regina had somehow framed me for some discrepancies in the town's finances?"
"Yes, they did."
"And that I had been mayor at the time and, with Regina framing me, got me removed from office, listed as an unfit parent, sent to some jail outside of Storybrooke and had a restraining order issued to keep me from ever coming back to my husband and child? And did we not contact that judge friend of your last night to have him look it over and he overturned everything this morning."
Thea sighed, "Again, yes."
"So, I'm going over there to find out if they have their memories or they do, then we can be reunited. If they don't, and it's their cursed selves I'm dealing with, then I need to fake it as much as possible and hope to rebuild our familial relationship as best as I can."
"Does that include his sister?"
"Oh, most definitely."
1-2-3-4-5
Mr. Gold, who's former life was as Rumpelstiltskin, was going over the catalogs when the door chimed, "I'm sorry, we're not open for business yet." When they didn't answer, he looked up to repeat himself and froze, "You…"
"I'm sorry. I saw you in here and thought we'd come in and introduce ourselves." Rissa sighed, Please remember me. Please. "I don't want to disturb anyone. Do you mind if we just look around?" Her heart quickened a little as he just stared at her, I need him to remember. I need to make him if he doesn't. "You wouldn't happen to have any antique bottles of um… Rum?" She asked, giving him a pointed look.
"Rum?" He closed his eyes for a second and smile, "Nixie?"
Narissa smiled as she started to cry, "Hey handsome."
He joined her in crying as he walk out from behind the counter with his cane and went to her, "You're here. You're alive." He brought his hand up under her hair and cupped the side of her face, "I never thought I'd see you again."
"I was afraid you wouldn't remember me."
"I didn't remember anything until I met Emma last night. Her name brought all of my memories back." He leaned forward to share a slow and sweet kiss, only stopping when they heard a throat being cleared.
"Well, I know the wife get the emotional hello and all, but come on. I'm the crying sister. Don't I at least get a wave?" Thea joked as wiped tears off her own face, "It has been 28 years."
Rumpel laughed as he waved her over, "Hey, little wolf." He gave her hug as he kept his other arm around his wife, "I should have know you two would be together. Where's Jess?"
"On a dig in Egypt." She chuckled at the look he gave her, "Outside of Storybrooke, we spent those 28 years learning new trades based on our experiences in our old lives. Being the Huntress helped me develop great tracking skills. I have a degree in sociology, criminal and family law, criminal justice, psychology, criminology, and computer security. I specialized in security analysis and criminal profiling. I've worked a district attorney, social work and as a parole officer. I own and security business with Emma and work as a bounty hunter.
"That's a lot of hots for one person." He laughed as he hugged her again, "But not nearly as much as I thought you would. After all, look at everything you accomplished in the Enchanted Forest."
"Yeah, well, I had 300 years to accomplish all of that. I only had 28 in this lifetime." She giggled, "Jess, being the high sailing adventuress that she is, took a different approach. She decided to travel and learn as much about this world as possible. She has degrees in anthropology, archeology, ancient civilizations, mythology, geology, art history, architecture and paleontology. She travels the world in search of new treasures and significant historical artifacts. She loves to give lectures in colleges and and writes papers under different pen names. According to her, it's fun to learn. So, whatever."
Rumpel laughed again, "At one point, you were just like her. Traveling and discovering new realms."
"That's different. I discovered a new purpose on those travels. Becoming the Huntress took a lot of work. I was the ultimate Bounty Hunter, thank you very much."
"Don't get huffy, Artie. I'm just teasing you." He looked down at the love of his life, still snuggled under his arm, "And what of you, my dear? What have you been up to?"
When she did answer, just burrowed deeper in arms, Thea smiled, "I can answer that. She because this world's version of a modern Enchantress. She has degrees in botany, herbalism, apothecary, aromatherapy, physical and message therapy, naturopathic medicine, holistic medicine, APRN and advanced midwifery." He laughed harder at his wife's accomplishment during the last 28 years, "We're making inquiries to buy the shop across the street. Use the bottom floor for all of her materials, medicines and knickknacks as the store will be a place of whimsy and healing. The second floor will hold two kitchens. One for her medicines and the second for the candy and treats that she just can't resist selling. We had planned to turn the top floor into an apartment for the two of us, but now I don't know if you would even allow her out of your sight."
"Um," Rissa looked up, "does Thalia know?"
"I don't know. I haven't figured that out yet."
As if on queue, the door opened, admitting a slip strawberry blonde holding two to-go cups in her hands, "Hey, Papa, I brought you your coffee." She turned around with a smile and stepped back into the door in shock, "Mama?" Though she had seen her in the cafe eating yesterday, seeing her now, hugging her father, sent her running forward and engulfed her mother in a hug. Tears, that she had held back yesterday, came flooding down.
"Thalia?" Rissa held on to her daughter in shock, "You remember?"
"It's Paige in this world." She looked up and laughed,"And, I never forgot."
"You didn't?" Her father asked, putting his hand on her shoulder, "Why didn't you ever say anything."
"I've been trying to figure out how to make you remember for 28 years. I think, since my powers are similar to moms, that the curse didn't effect me correctly. Jefferson was the same way. Since he was a portal jumper, his brain was already wired to realms of different magic."
"You poor thing." Thea walked over hug her, "28 years and the only ones who knew where you, Jefferson and Regina. That's just bad form." She frowned, "How did you cope? I mean, time was frozen."
"And it was the exact same day every day. The only differences were the clothes or the way things happened. It was tedious and frustrating. I felt like I was going insane."
"Wait, so, you practically lived a 28 year Groundhog Day?"
"Apt, but yes, yes I did." She stepped back, whipping her tears, "I was at a breaking point when I finally decided to let my inner imp out." That made them laugh, "I confronted Regina."
"What?" Her father asked, looking concerned, "Wait, what happened?"
"I proved to her that I knew exactly who I was and I wasn't going to play by her rules. I made it clear that I spent year training how to fight and wield any and every weapon I could get my hands on. I had the best education when it came to defending myself, and I wasn't going to let some powerless witch break me." She smirked, "I blackmailed her. I told her that I wouldn't interfere in what she was doing with the town, that I wouldn't try to wake anyone up, as long as she left me alone to my own devices. I had the memories floating around in my head that she gave me and I hated it. She made me hated and feared, like my father, and I had no friends. I worked very hard to change that. Even though the same day repeated, they eventually changed the way they looked at me."
"That's my girl." Rissa smirked, "But now, we have a problem. Thea broke into the sheriff's station last night. Undetected, I assure you." Rumpel rolled his eyes, "She was looking for anything that could be useful in retrieving your memories, incase you didn't remember me."
"And I came across some interesting reading." Thea leaned again the counter.
"Are you referring to the coup that Regina performed? The one where she had you kicked out of office, arrested, thrown out of town and filed a restraining order to keep you from ever stepping foot in Storybrooke again?" She looked over at him shock, "Cursed memories, remember? The only thing that kept my cursed self from leaving to follow was the proof that Regina provided on your death."
"My death?" Rissa narrowed her eyes, "Really? Hmm, okay. Another thing to beat her for. Right now, we need to figure out how to make the rest of this town remember the cursed me, so they won't wonder why I'm hanging around the feared Mr. Gold."
Thea looked at her brother, "Was she liked and hated like you?"
"She was respected. Way more than Regina. The curse put it in that Regina became mayor through fear because no one else wanted to run against her."
"Well, I have no interest in taking it away now. I need to get the rest of the town to remember the cursed me without people weirding out that I'm reunited with my family."
Rumpel smiled at his wife, "The curse was designed to work in Regina's favor. Though she doesn't have magic, she controls the story."
"She may not have magic," Rissa lifted a candle off the counter, "But that doesn't mean we don't." She closed her eyes for a second and blew on the wick. Smoke gathered in the fibers before it caught on fire.
"How did you do that?" Rumpel asked, taking the candle from her, "This is the land without magic."
"Correction. This is the land without fairy tale magic. Our type of magic, from our lands, doesn't exist here. But magic does exist. It's called earth magic. Outside of Storybrooke, most magic practitioners are Wiccans and follow the path of the Goddess."
"Since we do have magic in our blood," Thea smiled, "we spent the last 28 years learning how to access it and hone it to mastery. Trust me, a powerless Regina doesn't scare us."
"So, we can create a potion for remembrance and cast in on the town. It won't allow them to remember their fairy tale lives, but it will help them remember anything their cursed lives have been made to forget." Rissa smirked, "Like me. Only problem is, I don't have any forget me not flowers. Those are the best flowers to use. Usually I can cultivate them in my Sáma Soil. Mind soil." She added, looking at Paige, "It's made up of a mixture from black soil and 10 different types a ground gems for memory. I use it for certain flowers in spells."
"Pixie Flowers."
They looked over at a smiling teen, "Do you happen to know where we can get some?"
"Let's say, that they used to be all over the town. As you know, they grow in the presence of a Great Evil. In this case, Regina. Since she made the curse, the flowers started sprouting like wildfire. Unfortunately for the rest of the town, after a rather unpleasant experience, she burned everyone of them."
"What happened?" Thea asked, curious.
"It woke up Mary Margaret and David."
"Who?"
"Snow White and Charming. Anyways, something happened and they had a chance to go to Emma," she turned to her father, "Charming mentioned Emma's name and broke the curse on your memories. You convinced them that gong to Emma would keep her from going to Storybrooke in the 28th year and break the curse for everyone else. They took a potion he made to recurse themselves, so that they wouldn't remember and Papa did the same."
"Interesting." He mused, "Sounds like me."
"I didn't get a chance to tell him that I already had my memories, and would have liked for him to his so I wasn't so alone. Anyways, I had gathered some of the flowers before Regina could burn them, and have been cultivating them in my greenhouse ever since. I used to bring some in her every few days or so, hoping to awaken dad again, but they never worked. I even tried to us Emma's name, but I think it only worked with the product of true love anyways, or her parents. Do you think you can use those instead of forget me nots?"
"Actually, yes, I do." Before they could say anything else, Thea's cell rang, "What's with the frown, clown?"
"Trying to figure out who got my number." She flipped it open, "Hello? Emma!" Her eyes widened in shock and mirth, "You're what?" Her body started to shake in suppressed laughter, "Oh, my. Um, Em, how did that happen?" She asked, putting her hand over her mouth as she looked as Rissa, "Regina did what?" Thea stopped laughing as her eyes hardened in anger, "Don't worry. I'll get you out." She paused, "He actually let you call me before you left the room? How considerate. Where's Eva?" She nodded, "Okay. I'll let you go get her once you're clear. I have some errands to run later. See you." She hung up and pinched her nose in frustration, "Emma's been arrested."
"What?" Rissa looked over in elation, "That's awesome." She frowned, "What's pissed you off?"
"She went to talk to Henry's therapist, Dr. Hopper." She turned to Rumpel, "The Cricket?" He nodded, "Thought so. Anyways, she went to talk to him, and he tried to make her understand that Regina was the only one he could talk to about Henry."
"Which isn't true, what with the adoption contract, which we still have got to figure out."
Thea nodded, "Correct. Anyways, he gave Emma Henry's file, instead. She had left Eva in Granny and Ruby's care in the diner before leaving, thankfully. Anyways, the sheriff came to Emma room and to arrest her on theft, even though she tried to explain that the good doctor gave the file to her." She frowned, "It seems like the good doctor is on the mayor's payroll."
"Really?" Rissa nodded in thought, "Well, looks like Regina has just signed a declaration of war."
"They're back." Paige smirked, looking at her father.
"He let her call me before he took her out of the hotel room, that way we can meet them at the station. Can you post bail?" Thea looked at Rissa archly, "I've got something I need to take care of."
"I love it when she gets that look in her eyes." Rissa looped her arm through Rumpel's, "It's positively chilling." She laughed, "It's fantastic."
1-2-3-4-5
"Henry, what are you doing here?" The sheriff asked as the boy came in with Mary Margaret.
"His mother told him what happened." The said, walking over.
"Over course she did." Rissa rolled her eyes as she came in behind them, "Because everyone knows that Regina only looks out for Regina."
"You act like you know her." Graham crossed his arms, suspicious, "You just got here yesterday."
"Why, Graham, I'm hurt. You don't recognize me? Not even a little?" Rissa put her hand on her chest in exaggerated shock, "That hurts. After all, I am the one who originally appointed you sheriff."
The rest of the room's occupants looked at her in shock, "What?" The sheriff laughed at her, "Regina made me sheriff, not you."
"She's done a number on your head, Graham, if you can't remember who was mayor before Regina."
Emma looked even more confused than that morning, "So, everything you said to Regina this morning, it's true?"
"Oh, it's true. I'm just surprised everyone has seemed to have forgotten me." She shrugged, "Oh, well." She turned to Mary Margaret, "I recognize you. Who are you and what are you doing here?"
"I'm Mary Margaret, Henry's teacher. He came to me after Regina told him about Emma. I thought I'd post bail."
"That's so sweet." Rissa squinted for a moment, "His teacher? Wait, you're the one who gave Henry the book."
"Yes, I was."
"Nice. It shows what a good teacher you are. Now, save your money. We have a special fund for the five of us for possible bail and other such emergencies."
"Five?" Graham asked as Emma held out her hands for him to remove the cuffs, "How many of you are there?"
"Well, there's me, Thea and Emma there. And there's our friend Jess and Emma's husband Neal. He's a photographer and is currently on assignment in Egypt with Jess. She's the lead archeologist and new site."
"That's so cool." Henry looked at Emma, "I love taking pictures."
"I guess you know where you get it from." Emma turned to Rissa, "Where's Thea." She got nervous at the evil smirk that went across her friend's face, "Do I want to know?"
"She had something to take care of. Don't worry about it."
"Don't worry about Thea?" Emma looked skeptical, "I don't know how to do that."
1-2-3-4-5
Regina was in her office, working, when she heard a motor start up. She got and looked out the window, narrowing her eyes as she watch Thea using a chainsaw on her apple tree. The woman looked up and stared straight at Regina with a smirk as a long branch fell to the ground. It wasn't long before the mayor was rushing toward her from the building.
"What the hell are you doing?"
"Picking apples." Thea dropped the chainsaw on the ground and faced the angry woman head on, "You made them sound so good this morning that I just had to try them."
"You're out of your mind."
"No, you are if you think a shoddy frame job is going to scare us off. All it did was add fuel to the flames. I told you that I don't like threats when it comes to my family and Emma is a part of my family. Has been for years. You come after her or any other member of my family, I'll come back for the rest of the tree. One branch at a time." She stepped forward, "Because you have no idea what I am capable of and you really don't want to find out."
She picked up an apple and started to walk away, "Your move." She smirked as she bit into the fruit.
1-2-3-4-5
Thea had just walked back into the pawn shop when her phone rang again. She smiled when she saw Emma's name on the screen, "Before you ask, no, I didn't kill her." She paused and looked over at Rissa when she came out of the back with Rumpel and Paige, "You're kidding? Yeah, I'll keep Paige with me. No problem. I'll be right there."
"What happened now?" Rissa asked, crossing her arms.
"Apparently, the inn has a no felons rule, and has asked Emma to leave. She can't even stay in our rooms. So, she's going to stay in the bug and has asked if we'd keep Paige with us in ours. It's some sort of city ordinance." She sighed, "I'm gonna go get Eva. I need something to do without killing her Majesty." She put her phone away left.
"That woman is really starting to piss me off." Rissa rubbed her temples.
"Only just?" Rumpel chuckled before he reached into his pocket and produced a set of keys, "I guess there was a reason why the curse left that building unoccupied. It was waiting for you."
"Rum? What did you do?"
"Me? I didn't do anything. A little birdie told me that you were inquiring into the building and I thought that there was no reason to go through a third party to finalize the deal."
"You bought the building?" He and Paige just smiled, "You already owned the building."
"As well as the rest of the town." He said, handing her the keys, "I'll make you a deal."
"You know how much I love your deals."
"I want my wife back. Full time."
"That was the plan."
"There is an apartment on the third floor of that building. It needs a bit of work. But, once the building has been renovated to your specifications, the first and second floor will be for your shop. Thea can move to the third floor. Now, if your Ms. Swan finds other accommodations, Paige can live with Thea."
"You mean that, Papa?" She looked at her father in hope.
"Yes, I do. Though you are physically 19, technically, you're 47. That makes you an adult."
"Thank you."
"Want to take a tour of the building?"
Rissa snagged the keys from his hand, "Absolutely."
1-2-3-4-5
After the tour, Rissa went with Rumpel to needle Regina. Just a little. The mayor was tending to her damaged tree. Way to go, Thea. That's my girl.
"What a mess." Rumpel said, surveying the damage.
"Not for long. What could I do for you, Mr Gold?" She asked as she turned toward him, stopping when she saw Rissa holding onto his arm, "What are you doing here?"
Rumpel answered first, "I was just in the neighbourhood, thought I'd pop by. Lovely to see you in such high spirits."
Regina laughed, "It's been a good day. I rid my town of unwanted nuisances."
"Nuisances?" Rissa looked at the mayor like she was stupid, "I'm standing right in front of you, so you obviously don't mean me, right? Because, the last time I checked, I got your court order thrown out."
"I believe she was referring to Ms. Swan and young Eva." Her husband responded, walking around the tree, "That's a nice name for a girl. Not really common, nowadays."
"Regardless of who you are Mrs. Gold," Regina arched her brow, "and yes, I do remember you, I won. I imagine your little friend and her daughter are half way to Boston by now."
"Why? Because you had Emma kicked out of the inn? Or because you manipulated the situation to trick Emma and have Henry walking in your conversation with her?" Rissa pick an apple and held it up, "You really are stupid."
"Especially since we just saw Emma and Henry walking down the street. Thick as thieves they looked. Would have loved to have seen how young Eva is with your boy, but I'm told she was already asleep."
"We like to keep her on a schedule." Rissa smiled at him as she handed him the apple, "We'll have breakfast in the morning at Granny's. You can meet her."
"I love that idea." He tossed the apple at Regina, "Perhaps you should have come to me in the first place. If Ms Swan is a problem you can't fix, I would have been too happy to help. For a price, of course."
Regina chuckled, "I'm not in the business of making deals with you anymore."
"To which deal are you referring?"
"You know what deal."
"Oh, right, yeah. The boy I procured for you, Henry. Did I ever tell you what a lovely name that was? However did you pick it?" Narissa put her hand over her mouth to hide a chuckle, earning a glare from the mayor.
Regina paused by her tree for a moment before turning back toward them, "Do you want her to come to town? Your finding Henry wasn't an accident, was it?"
"Whatever do you mean?"
"Where did you get him? Do you know something?"
"I have no idea what you're implying."
"I think you do. Who is this women, his mother? This Emma Swan."
"I would say you think you know exactly who she is." Rissa commented, hooking her arm with his, "Now, if you'll excuse us, we have some final business to take care of before the night is over."
They turned to leave, but Regina rushed around them and stared at Rumpel, "Tell me what you know about her."
"Rude." Rissa stepped forward, but Rumpel held her back, "I'm not gonna answer you, dear. So I suggest you excuse me." When she didn't move, he emphasized, "Please."
At the word, as part of the last deal they made before the curse, Regina froze and stepped aside, looking shocked. The couple walked out through the gate, grinning. "Potion time, my love." Rissa nodded at her husband.
1-2-3-4-5
"This well holds the water from Lake Nostos. It's magical properties are said to bring back that which was lost. Like we said before, this potion isn't strong enough to bring back the entire town's memories of their lives in the Enchanted Forest, but it will bring back in suppressed or blocked memories during their cursed lives." Rissa held the bottle up as she looked at her husband and daughter. Thea was back at the inn with Eva.
The group nodded as she dropped the bottle into the well. Upon impact, a greyish-lavender colored smoke rose up and spread through out the town.
"Now, it truly begins."
