When Rebecca began on her journal, Mac was on the phone with Hawkes. "You said she had something in her records that I might want to be aware of? What is it?" Mac was watching as Rebecca wrote in her journal and almost cried a few times. "I know she personally has a connection to 9/11."

"Yeah, but that's not why I called you. I just looked into her files even deeper and found out a few things. She was a foster child from age 6 to age 7. She ran away from her foster parents and returned to her real parents. But she lost them in 9/11," he informed and Mac looked to Rebecca. Why did she run away? He then waited for Hawkes to continue. "They said that Rebecca was seeing a psychiatrist even back then. She was suffering from an episode but they never diagnosed what the episode was. It was when she ran away. She was about to be placed in the child psych ward of the local hospital. But she vanished. When she reappeared she was reassessed and whatever caused the episode was gone. But the way she was acting when I talked to her about her dad, I think I know why. She had the fear beaten out of her. She wouldn't talk to me about her dad when she knew he was angry. She just said he was more bitter than the picture on her desk."

"We can't assume we know. We'd need physical proof," Mac answered looking at Rebecca who was growing frustrated. "Call me if you get anything else from her record that needs to be addressed. See if you can't get records from the foster parents," he advised before walking over to see Rebecca's journal entry. "That's a long one."

"Some personal pieces are in there but a lot of it is according to story," she promised and he looked to see she spoke a lot about Claire in it, but he saw right where she meant it was personal. She had mentioned the fear of being all alone again. He looked at the picture she had of her father with her and he pointed to it. "What of it?"

"Hawkes said you acted off. You quickly jumped onto his defense about his behaviour. You said he was a Marine and was bitter?" She nodded and he looked at her confused. "Then why are you jumping to his defense on every second?"

"Because that's my dad. He wasn't a horrible man." Mac looked at her and she chuckled. "Yeah he got angry very easily, but I mean he was there. We only got to see him once every 8 months. Once I turned 2 that is. Before then he tried to stay home. But after that? He seemed to be always moving."

"Was that why you moved from South Carolina to New York?" She nodded and then looked in thought. "Your foster parents contacted the lab. That's why I'm asking. They were concerned when you stopped answering their calls. We didn't tell them, but they mentioned fear of history repeating itself. What did they mean?"

"Nothing. They're overparanoid socialites," she snapped. He looked at her stunned and she finally got her composure back. "Sorry. They were always very worried about me and I understand the reasons but it doesn't change that they're wrong."

"Your foster parents love you. They just are wanting to help protect you. Why'd you run away from them?" She looked at him shocked and he smiled sadly. "Hawkes was looking for something to use against Colic and it came up. He didn't press for many details but he was worried."

"I ran away because I wanted my real parents. I didn't want anyone who wasn't them. I mean, dad was angry, but he was him you know?" Mac bit his lip knowing what some Marines did behind closed doors, although the victims never came clean. It was clear Rebecca was one of them. She wouldn't come clean about what her father did."

"Not all Marines were angry and bitter," he responded and she glanced up at him confused. "I served in the Marines and I'm telling you that I'm not one of the only ones. I could easily use 20 different marines as an example. They aren't all angry and bitter."

"All the ones I met? They were." She looked at the journal. "It's finished so the guy has something to look at. I'm going out," she answered grabbing her coat. "Send Flack or something if you must considering I'm incompetent but I'm not staying in this apartment all the time."

Mac counted to 20 before texting Flack to follow Rebecca. "She seems really upset whenever you bring up her father," Stella noted before they got a call from Hawkes. "Hey fill us in. Anything else on Rebecca's old man that we should know?"

"Yeah seems he was not discharged the way she claims he was," he answered and Mac looked to Stella. "Dishonorably discharged in 2000 for assaulting a commanding officer leaving bodily harm. Rebecca probably knows and isn't absorbing it. Trying to keep her good image of her father."

"I know she is. She practically ignored me when I told her about all the good marines in the world," Mac explained. He then looked at the picture again that he and Stella had taken with Rebecca on her first year party with them. "Hawkes look into her mother. See if there's any assault charges."

"Already done. Seems Child Protective Services was called to the residence multiple times. But they left after being guaranteed all the accusations were false. It had to be confirmed by more than just the mother. The son Talon confirmed it. But that wasn't enough. They asked one other person."

"Don't tell me," Stella began before they heard it. "Rebecca lied and said their mother wasn't hurting them." Hawkes made an affirmative sound. "Rebecca's so used to lying to protect those around her that when she's in pain she lies to us."

"It's her nature. So when I mentioned not bitter and not angry Marines, she didn't believe. She only knows Marines to be bitter and angry. Her father only brought people around that supported that image of Marines to her. So she'd believe."

"Mac, where is she now?"

"I don't know. I already sent Flack after her," he admitted.

"Where's her phone?"

"She ditched it. Knew we'd probably look," Mac answered as he went to the counter. He went to check her texts and groaned. "She even deleted all her texts. So I have no idea where she is. Rely on street cameras," Mac advised as he grabbed his badge. "I'm going into town. I'll find her."

"Check with the foster parents," Hawkes advised. Mac made a sound and he chuckled at them. "Her foster parents are in Manhattan," he informed and Mac clicked into it. She'd just need to get on the subway. He hurried down the road to see the subway station and watched as Flack was doing the same and going into the station meaning it was where Rebecca went. Slipping into it, they both found her within seconds and grabbed her arm.

"How? I ditched my phone."

"We looked into where your foster parents lived. Doesn't take much to know where once you put a few things together. Let's go," Flack warned as he carefully got her out of there without them revealing the incompetent status in a huge crowd. They used it in public but not unless needed. When they got back to the apartment, Flack looked at her. "Are you looking to get yourself killed?" They didn't continue until they got into the apartment. "Nice job scaring us quite literally. Heard of keeping a cellphone on you?"

"I said I was going into town. Never lied about where I was going to be."

"Yeah but you forget, there's 3 sections of New York just a subway ride away from here," Mac answered looking at her. "If you're taking the subway be blunt. But I really don't advise seeing them at the moment. We don't want Colic to see that," Mac warned.

"They're getting on my case. It's hard to tell them you're undercover," she explained and Flack nodded knowing what she was getting at. He then got a lightbulb in his head and then opened his own phone to make a call. "You better have something good."

"I do. I'm sending Jo over to them. Might help them not blow up your phone as that's the last thing you need to happen while you're with Colic once a day," Flack explained. She nodded knowing that someone had to contact them and let them know she was okay.

"Get to bed," Mac warned and she glared before going to her room and he sighed. "Have Jo talk to them and see what they know about Rebecca for the small bit of time they had her," he advised and Flack nodded leaving as he knew they'd be talking to the parents for a while. As the door closed, Mac saw Stella looking worried.

"She almost blew her cover. She was going to Manhattan to see her foster parents," Mac informed and Stella nodded covering her face. "She's trying but I think she's also trying to tell people she's not in any huge trouble. I sent Flack and Jo after her parents."

"She knew that. She probably acted out a little bit so then Colic didn't get suspicious." Mac looked at her and she chuckled. "Mac she's a declared incompetent 23 year old. What incompetent child wouldn't try to break many rules? So she slipped out to continue that."

"She's good at it," Mac answered before he heard his phone ring and he glanced to see it was Flack. "This is Taylor," he greeted before he heard the noise in the background. "Flack what's going on?"

"It seems Miss Manx or as we all know her, Miss Taylor, is covering something. I'm going to give you to her foster father, Martin Diner," he informed.

"Mr Diner, my name is Detective Mac Taylor. I know you had custody of Rebecca Manx for about a year," he began calmly before he heard an annoyed sound. "I'm sure at the moment you hearing from me isn't something you want. But she's undercover and she willingly went. She wanted to help catch a psychiatrist that is causing people to do harm."

"Rebecca was always like that. Didn't care if it put her in danger, she'd do it regardless. She ran away just as we found her a psychiatrist. By the time we learned she returned to New York City, it was too late. She had been reassessed and declared fine. Don't let her fool you. She lived with us for a year and saw us put on a face. It seems that's the trick she picked up," he informed.

"So she could be lying about a lot of things."

"Some yes and some no. Her parents? Don't believe her when she says they were all sweet and good to her. I'm sure she's mentioned her bitter father. Don't take her word that he meant well. Her mother? Drug addict as you probably already know from the autopsy."

"We did get records about their deaths but nothing on her siblings. Do you know anything about them?"

"Her brother Jeremy? Dead in the towers. He went in to save lives. So she can speak good about him. Talon, well he's alive, but he's not on the right side of the fence." Mac made a sound and he chuckled at the Detective. "Ask Detective Flack about him. He's had some run ins."

"Noted. Anything about Rebecca that we should be aware of?"

"Watch her. If this psychiatrist is doing what you think, he won't have to do much. She wears a mask."

"Thank you. We'll let her come down to see you once she's done," Mac promised and he then heard an unsure sound. "Is there something about Rebecca that bothers you? We want to know so we can keep an eye out for it."

"She's clearly close to you. Promise me you'll protect her."

"I always look out for her. But you are a part of her life and I won't let you leave her life as quick as you think." As he hung up, he looked out the windows and closed his eyes. Stella looked at him and Mac took a glance down the hall.

"I'm going to talk to Hawkes and see if there's any records about her mental health," he informed looking at her. "Seems Rebecca's family was in acting. They warned me she's great with putting up a mask. So what we're seeing? It could be a mask still."
