Naruto did not know where he was , everywhere he looked around he could only see a fog .
"Naruto" , a voice called out
" Naruto" , he turned around trying to find out who was calling his name.
He could make out the shape of a woman through the fog , " Naruto " , there was concern in her voice for him .
He walked towards the woman , his hand reaching out to grab her . Suddenly there was a flash of light and his eyes closed on their own , when Naruto reopened his eyes he found himself near the KIA monument all alone . It was morning but it was still quite dark all around him , he glanced at the stone where his mother's name was carved , he ran his fingers over the name once more before he began walking towards his apartment as yesterday fears once again made an entry in his mind.
' Is that really my mother ' , he didn't know for sure , ' The old man will tell me' and with that thought his face lighted up with one of his trademarked grins.
The streets where empty save for the few people out , some were Civilians preparing to open their shops and some were the Ninja who patrolled the the village.
It felt weird walking around , no one was staring at him with that coldness in their eyes they were too busy with their own tasks to bother with him , As the cold wind passed by him he felt a shiver , he had forgotten to wear his orange jacket in his hurry. Naruto started walking with a bit more speed and he soon reached his apartment.
The building wasn't run down or anything but it wasn't quite as good as the other building in Konoha . He passed a few of his neighbors , most of them were clanless shinobi or orphans like him.
" Good morning Naruto " , Naruto turned his face and saw the owner of the voice , it was a young man with Grey colored hair and light colored eyes.
" Oh hey Shin , I thought you ans Sai were on a mission " , Naruto replied cheerfully , happy to see one of his few neighbors who were not indifferent to him.
" Oh I returned yesterday but Sai is still away on a mission . I heard about your graduation , Congratulations " , Shin had a kind smile on his face .
Naruto smiled , happy that someone was happy to hear about his graduation , " Thanks , I was wondering if you could ask your grandfather to come and meet me today " , Shin's smile fell as he nodded.
'Grandfather' , was a code for the old man , he had told him when he was younger that if he ever wished to speak with him he had to tell this phrase to Sai or Shin or another member of the ROOT .
ROOT was a group of Ninja under the old man , even though he was old the old man was pretty cool.
There was no written schedule for when he would come , sometimes Naruto wouldn't see him for some months , sometimes he would see the old men every single day of the week.
Naruto glanced at the clock on the table , the clock was only going to strike 5 , he had to report only at 7 .He decided to sleep for some more but as much as he tried he could not sleep.
He glanced at the door when he heard someone knock at his door , he opened the door with his right hand , a kunai in his left hand .
He relaxed when he saw it was only Shin .
" What is it Shin ? " , he
" I have a message from grandfather " , he said pointing to the the stack of books in is hand.
Shin gave Naruto a small letter as he placed the books on his table and then he was gone before Naruto could say anything else.
Naruto glanced at the letter.
Naruto ,
You have till today evening to learn the content of the books.
A proper ninja is always aware of his surrounding's and must have enough sense to not fall asleep in a potentially dangerous environment.
' Not Fair Old Man ' , he screamed inside his mind as he glanced at the stack of books left for him and then glanced at the letter again before he saw the writing at the other side .
I expect more from Kushina's son
Naruto felt tears fall from his eyes as he glanced at his mother's name . " Kushina " , he softly murmured to himself .
Naruto felt like he could burst out of happiness as the old man confirmed his hope , that was his mother's name carved at the KIA monument .
Naruto had always wanted to learn about his parents , hear something about them , but no one had ever told him and now he at least had a name , his mother's name and it meant more to him than anything else.
So Naruto glanced at the books that had been given to him as a form of punishment , promising himself once more that he would be a great Ninja that would make his mother proud , that he would become the Hokage of the village ,that he would protect the village his parents had given their lives to save .
Those cold stares couldn't stop him , one day he would show them all who he really was .
That he was a protector not a destroyer .
Hiruzen wondered what happened to Naruto .
Team 7 had come to take their first mission , it was such a beautiful sight when he saw the expressions of the Genin when they learned what kind of missions they would have to do . He even had Iruka prepare a camera to get their expressions , While the expressions on Sakura and Sasuke's face had been funny , Naruto's expression had not changed even a bit , the smile that had been on his face as he came into the Office remained there unchanged.
He wondered if Naruto already knew they would have to do this kind of missions , but who could have told him.
The second possibility was that Naruto hadn't been paying any attention to what he was saying .
The third was that Naruto had matured enough to understand that D-rank missions were as important as any other mission to the village.
Who was he kidding it was probably the second one.
