So sorry it took so long to update! My phone broke! Ahh.
Red and blue flickering lights shined through the window of the living room in a crack from the curtains. Andi had been folding laundry, wearing a pair of purple biker shorts and a gray cut off top, her brown hair pulled back in a messy bun, and her square clear framed glasses on her face.
When she noticed the flashing reflection, she finished folding the shirt in her hand, then stood from the couch. She brushed the hair from her face, then headed for the window, her heart stopping when she saw the tactical S.W.A.T. vehicle parked in front of her house.
She dreaded this moment from the very first time she caught feelings for Luca. The moment an officer would knock on her door and tell her that he was dead. Her heart sank as she heard the front door open, and she spun around quickly to see who was standing in her foyer.
"Fuck, baby," she sighed in relief, grabbing her chest, and leaning forward. "You scared me. I thought someone was about to tell me you were dead."
Luca hurried towards his wife, his arms wrapping around her body. He was wearing his typical tactical uniform, a gun wrapped in the holster around his leg, and Andi wrapped her arms around his back. "How you feeling?" He asked her.
"Better. Kept lunch down."
The sound of someone clearing their throat brought Andi back to reality. She pulled away to see Commander Hicks and Hondo standing in her living room, and suddenly she felt naked with her belly showing, and her shorts barely covering her long legs.
"What's going on?" She asked, grabbing one of Luca's zip up hoodies from the pile of folded laundry resting on the coffee table. She threw it over her body, and zipped it quickly.
"Honey," Luca cautioned. "We..." he sighed, unsure how to explain to his wife that her first husband was still alive. Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair.
"Is it Charlotte?" Andi asked. "Is Charlotte okay? Is she dead?"
"No one is dead," Luca promised. He realized his words probably weren't the best choice, considering the one person who was supposed to be dead wasn't. "Charlotte is okay. No," Luca shook his head. He grabbed her hands and pushed her gently onto the couch. He cleared his throat and then spoke again. "When Matt died, did you ever see his body?"
Andi shook her head, looking up at Luca. "No. They never found his body. It was a whole thing, fighting with the courts to get a death certificate. Did they find his body? That's like impossible. A decade later it was found?"
Andi glanced from Luca to Hondo and then to Hicks. Luca looked defeated, and she wasn't sure why. Hondo gave nothing away, stone face as he allowed Luca to ramble and stutter like an idiot. And Hicks looked sorry. Like he held the guilt of murdering Matt himself. Andi was confused and nothing she could muster made any sense to her.
"Luca, just fucking tell me what the hell is going on," Andi demanded.
"This morning the team was called into a hostage situation. Upon saving the hostage, he refused to provide a real name. When I got there, hours later, and I saw him, I recognized him. I've never met Matt before, but I've seen plenty of photos to know it was him. We ran DNA from a safe kids program you entered Charlotte's prints and DNA into, and it confirmed, the victim from our hostage situation was Matthew Jackson."
Andi didn't respond.
"Matthew is alive, Andi," Hondo confirmed.
"That's..." Andi, stood upright, her face furrowing in anger. "This isn't funny," she barked, shoving Luca's chest. He barely moved at her force. Standing tall as she shoved him again. "Don't do this."
"I'm not lying," Luca told her, grabbing her wrists. "I wish I was. I wish this was a horrible joke, Andi. It's not. I'm not lying."
"How the fuck is this possible?" She asked, sitting down on the couch. She ran her hands over her face, leaning forward so her elbows were propped on her knees. After a moment of silence, she looked up and over to Hondo and Hicks. "Are you saying he faked his death?"
"It... would seem so..." Hicks said slowly, nodding his head as his shoulders shrugged. "I mean. Unless you can come up with another logical explanation."
"Well what does he say?"
"He won't talk. Unless he sees you and Charlotte," Hondo said.
"Oh fuck no," Andi laughed. She stood up again, rage filling her at the thought of Matt trying to manipulate the situation. She turned back to Luca. "You saw him? You talked to him?"
Luca nodded, his arms crossed. "When I saw him I recognized him. It was my idea to run his DNA to be sure. When it was a paternal match with Charlotte's..." Luca drifted off. "I went in to his holding cell and I lost my cool on him. He lawyered up pretty quickly and they're going to be pressing charges on me for police brutality."
"Why would you do that, Dominique," Andi growled.
"Because he hurt you!" Luca defended, his voice elevating. "He fucking hurt you. And he had to pay for... someone had to pay for what happened to you after he died. He is just as guilty as the other guy. When I saw him all the rage I was holding in, everything built up since you told me... it needed a release, Andi."
Andi grabbed Luca's hands, kissing his knuckles. "I told you not to do anything about that."
Hondo and Hicks exchanged confused looks. "What happened after he supposedly died?" Hicks asked.
Andi waved her hands in defeat, heading down the hall and into their room. Luca turned to face them, letting out a sigh. "He was a gambler who owed money to some bookie. They forced Andi to pay up and when she couldn't come up with all the money owed..."
"Well, Luca, I'd say you handled him better than I would have," Hondo admitted.
"But you were still on duty in a police uniform inside of a police station," Hicks scolded. "Andi's right. What were you thinking?"
"I was thinking this bastard doesn't deserve to live," Luca said.
Andi opened the door, heading back down the hall. She was now dressed in dark jeans and a low cut red shirt, her hair down around her face. She headed for the kitchen, went into a cabinet and pulled out an unopened bottle of vodka, then went for her purse and placed it in there.
"We need to stop for cigarettes on the way," she said, pulling her brown leather jacket over her.
"What?" Luca laughed.
"And the bank," she said. "You're not getting in trouble because of this mistake."
"What mistake?" Luca asked. "Andi, I knew what I was doing when I went into that room. It wasn't a mistake."
"I'm talking about my mistake. I shouldn't have ever married him. I shouldn't have... I should have left him before this happened. I was young and stupid. And he's not going to get away with this. I'm going to take care of it. He wants to see me? He'll see me. I'll bring him a bottle of vodka and he'll wither away in the bottle like he always does. And then I'll make sure this whole stupid thing goes away. Just let me do this."
"If you see him, I'm afraid you won't be able to handle it."
"I'm married to you now. He means nothing to me. He faked his death and left his 10 year old daughter without a father," Andi sighed, knowing he needed more reassurance.
This situation was an odd one, and unfathomable one. Something you watch in a movie, not something you ever expect to live. Luca needed to know that Matt wasn't a threat to his relationship with Andi. He needed to feel secure that Andi was his.
She grabbed his hands. "When I touch you, I'm shaky. My stomach feels warm," she whispered, pressing her head against his as she repeated the words he'd said to her weeks before. She moved her hand to his chest. "I would walk through fire to show you I loved you."
"Okay," he nodded. "Okay," he looked at Hicks. "Let her talk to him."
"Well, I don't think cigarettes and alcohol are allowed in an interrogation room, but I guess I will allow it just this once," Hicks smiled
