Penny and Bolt continued their escape from the studio, when Penny had an idea of what to do with Bolt that would make him really happy. She thought that they could hitch a ride to Las Vegas, where they'd hang around for a bit, as a romantic getaway for them both.
"Okay Bolty, follow me!" said Penny. She ran with Bolt to the local Taco Bell down the street where a big SUV was parked, it looked as if it was somewhere from Nevada, since it had a license plate that said it was from Nevada and that it had tons of stuff in the boot and on the roof as if the owner was on a vacation.
"Bolt, hide, someone's coming!" alerted Penny, as a man was leaving Taco Bell and coming towards them. Penny had a good look at the person who was coming towards the car; the man had denim jeans, a red jacket with a white t- shirt under it. But the thing that captured the most of Penny's attention was the cap he was wearing, since it was written "I (love heart) Las Vegas" on it.
"Bolt, get on top of this" Penny suggested, as she was climbing up the car using the ropes that were tying down a mattress on top of the car. They reached the top, slumping down amongst some bags which were also tied down. Nobody could see them, unless a helicopter was passing by quite closely.
"Um Penny… where exactly are we going?" asked Bolt, quite concerned.
"That's for you to find out!" Penny smiled. They were driving for a few hours on Highway 15 until a sign which caught their attention! A 'welcome to…' sign was in front of them, Penny spotted it 200m ahead of the car, they were advancing on it quickly, it read…
"WELCOME TO JEAN, Bolty! It isn't that far now!" chuckled Penny. A few moments later, another sign came up. 'Welcome to Las Vegas' it read. Penny didn't want to scream out that they were there, because then it wouldn't be that surprising. So, she took Bolt deeper into the pile of bags where they couldn't see outside, she planned to keep Bolt in there until they reach central Las Vegas.
"Ok Bolt, we're going to have to stay on the roof until the man stops his car somewhere, preferably his house" instructed Penny. Just then the night started to darken, making it perfect to see all the spectacular lights there! The first skyscraper of Las Vegas passed them; Penny blocked Bolt's vision by obstructing his eyes with her paws. She brought Bolt to the top of the car so he could see the city at night; she removes her paws from Bolt's eyes, smiling. Bolt's mouth gapes open to the sight of the amazing lights of Las Vegas. His eyes wander to everything lightened up. Bolt, completely amazed, losses control of his legs from amazement which made him collapse into Penny's soft, furry body, it felt really good, snuggling up to Penny. They both fell asleep, both feeling really safe. Little did they realise that while they were asleep, the man parked his car into his garage in Tonopah. He began taking things off his car when he found two white dogs on his roof, both sleeping. He called the local dog pound, they arrived, taking Penny and Bolt to a containment unit inside the pound. After half an hour of sleeping, they finally woke up together realising they were both inside the containment unit along with two other dogs.
"Hey look Cyril, they're up!" whispered one of the dogs to the other.
"Greetings, fellow canines!" called out a white and brown English bulldog. "My name is Cyril, and this is Kurt" pointing towards the dog next to him, a brown Chinook.
"Hello, guys. Umm, where are we?" asked Penny. "And I'm Penny and this is Bolt, we are both white German Shepherds"
"This is the pound, I've been in this place since '93, I can't remember the outside now. And I haven't seen a NASCAR race for ages; I've wanted to watch the championships since then, I used to… my favourite is Dale Earnhardt. How is Earnhardt going?!" Kurt explained.
"Uh Penny, what is NASCAR?" whispered Bolt, to her.
