[Season 1] Ep. 3 - What it takes to be a Hero Pro
After the test, I woke up, my body still painful and tired, in an infirmary bed with Masako next to me, also bedridden and asleep.
The sliding door opened slowly, and I saw a tall and thin man coming out, with grey hair and a small mustache, dressed in an elegant black tuxedo from underneath his blouse, so I recognized Noritoshi Kendai, alias Healing Butler, the school medic of U.A. His quirk named Penny Worth, allowed him to heal all kinds of physical wounds by consuming a certain number of pennies, depending on the wound. He then approached me before sitting down at my bedside, crossing his legs elegantly, and said:
- "Well young man, here is a nasty quirk you have there. I have rarely seen such exhaustion after a fight. You have solicited many of my famous pieces of healing, my dear".
I then turned my head gently towards Masako, my eyes filled with regret and guilt:
- "I control my quirk so badly that I put this girl in danger... It's unworthy of a hero...".
To which the nurse replied:
- "What would be unworthy of a hero are such thoughts. Your quirk, it is up to you to make it your own, just as it is up to the U.A. Teachers' Council to decide whether, in their eyes, you are worthy of a hero to enter our school. Go home, young man, and try to think about something other than guilt while you wait for the results."
Listening to his advice, I got up gently, looked one last time at Masako's sweet face, which I had endangered by my desire for revenge, and took my things before returning home.
The days passed and, despite repeated calls from Moe and Genzō, I remained cloistered in my room, not wanting to see anyone, drowning in the reading of my comics, dreaming of being like my beloved fictional heroes, powerful and loved by all.
A week went by, and the day of the result came quickly. At the end of the morning, while I was alone at home, still wandering around in my jogging clothes, the doorbell of our little house rang, and, dragging my feet in fear of the bad news, I approached the door.
Opening it and expecting to see a regular postman, I found myself made up of Genzō, Moe but also Masako, all 3 of them together with their letter in hand as well as mine. Moe handed it to me:
- "Here's your letter from U.A. Since you didn't answer us, we thought we'd come straight to your place to give you no choice and on the way, we met this girl who seems to have something to tell you"
I then took my letter in my hand as Masako came forward to talk to me, all shy, making me blush because, being in jogging, I wasn't at my best to welcome a guest:
- "Listen... I know you blame yourself for what happened at the exam with your quirk and everything... But you know, if I ended up in the infirmary in that state, it had nothing to do with you. You protected me from the debris, I'm the one who hurt myself like an idiot activating my quirk to stupidly jump on that big robot, not you"
A little embarrassed by this misunderstanding and, finding myself a little unprepared, I lowered my head and nodded them to come in, feeling bad for having ignored them all this time.
The four of us sat on the sofa in the living room, staring at our letters with the ball in our stomachs. Genzō took the initiative first and opened his letter, read it, and turning his head towards us with a big smile, he announced:
- "I'm admitted! I've been accepted into Class B of the Heroic Department!"
Then it was Masako's turn to open her, trembling with stress. As she read the contents, she jumped for joy, shouting:
- "I'm accepted! I'm going to Class A! I finally made it!"
Then it was Moe's turn to tear the top of the envelope with her teeth like an animal before reading the bold box out loud:
- "We are pleased to inform you that you have been admitted to Class A in the Heroic Department of U.A!"
Everyone had made it, they were all taken. Now it was up to me to find out if I had failed or not. Unconfident, with a ball in my stomach and stressed by the result, I gently opened the envelope before reading the contents carefully.
A table summarizing our points was inscribed with 2 columns, fight points... and rescue points? It seems that my intuition was good and that we were graded on other criteria than simply the destruction of the robots.
Thus, those who had shown heroism in saving their comrade from various dangers rather than just destroying the robots were awarded bonus points. Thus, thanks to the points I earned by saving Masako, I was finally narrowly admitted to the heroic department in Class A of U.A!
Too happy to have all been admitted, it took us a few minutes before we realized some sad news, Genzō was going to be separated from Moe and me... We who had been in the same class since we met in middle school were going to have to go our separate ways.
While Moe and I were pulling a funeral face, a little depressed by the news, Genzō took us both under his arms and smiled reassuringly:
- "Don't make that face. It's not goodbye, we'll just not be in the same class but we'll still be mates!".
Reassured by his words, we made ourselves a brofist, with a smile on our lips, impatient for the start of the new school year.
April, the first day of school. On the day of my official entrance to U.A. Proudly wearing my brand-new uniform, I ran impatiently into the school's front yard, eager to get into my classroom and discover my classmates and especially my teachers.
After reading the building plan at the entrance, I walked to the entrance of class 1-A, my classroom. Here I was in front of this imposing red U-shaped door, I took a deep breath and smiled before pushing the door leading to my new adventures.
I, who had arrived early to meet the others first, was obviously not the only one to have thought of the same thing and finally, here I am in the last ones to arrive.
Looking around at everyone, my gaze crossed that of someone familiar whom I would have liked not to have found here, the blond, green-eyed man with inner-tube muscles. He then walked towards me, still with that superior look on his face, and introduced himself:
- "You finally managed to get in here despite the fiasco of your quirk. Mff, that doesn't mean you'll ever be a hero to me. Remember my name, Haruto Shishiudo, the one who will become the equal of Ultra Bright"
Clenching the fist of anger as he returned to his seat without even looking at me, another familiar face approached me, holding out a friendly hand, and winking at me:
- "Don't pay attention to him, his ego will always choke him, just because Mr. is the son of a hero. I'm Yūji, Yūji Medai. Nice to meet you." Calming down and shaking Yūji's hand, I also introduced myself: "Nice to meet you, Yūji. I'm Raiji Fugiri. We met at the exam, didn't we?"
As Yūji was about to answer me, Moe came in like a fury, her uniform a little disheveled, just as the bell was about to ring, shouting:
- "Damn! I almost ran out of time on the first day! It's a good thing the teacher isn't here yet"
But, suddenly, coming down from an air vent like a ninja, a man in his forties with a rough beard, battle hair shaved on the sides, and dressed in a tight black outfit with a yellow belt full of pockets appeared in front of the class blackboard.
It was Takāki Otōe, alias Nocturn, a hero whose quirk allowed him to use echolocation like a bat and shout powerful ultrasounds. He then stood up straight like an army general and looked at all of us who were stunned and said in a hoarse voice:
- "So? What are you waiting for to put yourself in your place?"
We all quickly returned to our assigned seat numbers and stood there, waiting for the speech of the one who was to be our homeroom teacher:
- "Well, good. I'm Takāki Otōe, aka Nocturn, and for the leadership of this school, I'm your homeroom teacher. But to you, I would be your worst nightmare."
