On the drive across town, stuck in traffic her head quickly runs through that exchange with Street again and again. She is annoyed and angry about his lame attempt at an apology. Him trying to rationalize his actions.
But he must've convinced Molly somehow, they had after all lived together in that building. And now? Something in the way Molly had reacted to her felt off. Again she felt like she was being blamed for something and Chris couldn't fathom what that was.
At another red light, she checks her phone and sees a new text message from Tan and another from a new number.
Tan's text just reads "Sorry, I had to."
Chris lets her fingers hover over the other notification. She has a very good idea of who it is from but is she ready to try this again?
"Chris I am sorry for how I acted earlier. But you were gone for four years. You have no idea what happened around here. Can we just meet and talk? Like we used to?"
There is no time to respond as traffic is moving again, but if she were honest with herself, she has no idea what to answer. Yes, she wants to know what happened because right now she feels lost in a sea of mixed emotions and not all of those are hers.
The only thing she is still sure about is, that she is not ready to let Street in completely. Not until she has a grasp on the mess he is in with Molly.
Over the next couple of days Chris had taken a few more meetings and now was faced with an almost impossible decision. What was her next step?
She looked over everything again.
She was supposed to give Lynch an answer tomorrow, and if she were totally honest with herself going back to SWAT was exactly what she wanted.
Would that work though?
She had exchanged a few texts with Tan, also to sure up their dinner plans and make sure she wasn't intruding. From memory, most young moms weren't too keen on visitors when they came home with their baby. But Bonnie also insisted on the phone.
Chris picks up her phone and her fingers hover again over the message from Street. She knew if she takes the spot on 20 David they absolutely have to talk this out. Set some "new" ground rules.
Lynch's comment springs back to mind "You are not allowed to date any of them..." and she shakes her head at herself. That would be an impossible thing anyway.
She quickly texts him back: "We need to talk you're right.".
The pressure in her head still is building up and so Chris changes into her workout gear to go out for a run. Clear her mind and think over everything one last time before she informs everyone of her decision.
When she steps off the elevator in the lobby, she spots a hunched-over figure near the entrance and instinctively she approaches. As she gets closer, she recognizes Molly and quickens her pace.
"Hey, Molly? Can I help you? What's wrong?" Chris is worried when she sees the tear-stained, pain-stricken face and the curled-up position Molly is in.
She gets no coherent answer and so she pulls out her phone to dial 9-1-1.
Chris sits down and tries her best to support the frail state the other woman is in. As awkward as it feels for her, she can only imagine how Molly must feel.
The ambulance arrives quickly and when the EMTs ask her if she wants to ride with them Chris hesitates until Molly mumbles a quiet. "Please, stay with me." It breaks Chris's heart, but she climbs in still worried about what on earth is going on here.
During the ride to the hospital, Chris does her best to be supportive. Molly mumbles continually "Not again. I can't do this again." in between her sobs and the paramedics have a hard time getting any straight answers out of her.
After the EMT has asked Molly for the third time if he can give her a mild sedative he turns to Chris. "Do you know what is going on?"
Chris shakes her head slightly and then puts her hand on Molly's shoulder. "Molly? You have to tell them what you think is going on."
In response, Molly starts crying and shaking again.
Chris exchanges a look with the EMT and then just decides to blurt out what ran through her head. "I think she is pregnant."
Suddenly a very low "not for much longer" falls from Molly's lips and the confidence behind that shaking voice is chilling to the bone.
At the emergency room, Chris tries her best to not be in the way, or make Molly uncomfortable but the way the blonde reaches for her hand makes her stay close, even if she feels like an intruder. Shouldn't be the father here? Or a real friend? Her own father?
All these thoughts run through her brain and Chris pulls out her phone. "Molly, can I call someone to be here with you?"
"No, there is no point. But if you have to you can leave." the defeat in those words breaks her heart even further.
What the heck has happened here? Molly looks broken and lost.
Chris smiles softly and mouths "I'll wait outside." when the doctor ushers her out of the room for the exams.
Chris paces the corridor hoping, against every fiber of her being that Molly's thoughts are wrong and if she is pregnant, she stays that way. Suddenly the mumbling from earlier springs back to mind and haunts her thoughts, until her phone ringing in her pocket pulls her back to the corridor, she is in.
Without checking the ID Chris picks up, figuring it might just be someone from her family.
When she realizes who is on the other end Chris quickly takes a couple of steps away from the exam room and spins to face the door.
"Now, is not a good time, Street." she has no intention of explaining why but someone using the speaker system calling for a doctor to come somewhere gives her little choice.
"Where are you?" he sounds immediately concerned.
"Don't worry, I am at a hospital with a," she takes a pause and contemplates what exactly to say, if her hunch is right he probably has a right to know... " with a friend."
"I am sorry. I just, I know you have to give Lynch your decision tomorrow and if us not talking is an issue I wanted to solve that before you make a final decision." she can hear him rush out, and somehow that makes her smile and boil at the same time. It shows her he still cares but how dare he think she'd make professional decisions based on personal connections, or feelings?
Before she can start on her rant, because she could totally just blurt out everything running through her head, the door to the exam room opens and the nurse walks up to her. "Street I got to go, I already made my decisions, and it has nothing to do with you but we should talk. Like I said before."
Chris hangs up before he has a chance to reply and looks at the nurse who is holding out some paperwork to her.
She raises her eyebrows in confusion but takes it anyway.
"She is ready to go home now. Please fill these out and get them to me at the nurse's station when you leave." the middle-aged woman across from her explains and then waits for Chris to acknowledge the instructions.
Chris slowly walks to the door and peeks in. Molly is sitting on the middle bed and quietly talking to the doctor.
"And Ms. Hicks, to monitor the situation please make an emergency appointment with your regular OB." he shakes her hand before passing Chris with a friendly nod and leaving the room.
Chris leans against the wall and waits for Molly to look in her direction. The tears have seemed to stop and dried, but Molly looks drained and if possible even more frail than when she found her in the lobby. "Are you okay with this?" Chris asks and points to the discharge paperwork.
