Wolfie: As always I do not own anything related to Night at the Museum. I am seriously on a roll with this though as I've got 4, now 5 actually, chapter's published and it's only been 4 to 5 day's since I published this book. Now I do keep repeating certain things for each chapter, it might not be necessary but to me it is. Also sorry that this is a bit short but that's because I want to get as many chapter's as I can out of the first movie. Plus I feel like Larry almost quiting and then doing research deserved to have it's own chapter. Anywho, please read and review this.

Chapter 5: Attempting to quit and doing research
"Hello!" Gus shouted to the empty museum as him and Reginald pushed open the door's labeled staff only.
"Larry?" Cecil called out as him and his two colleagues begin to look for the AWOL Larry. "Larry?" He called out again as they were walking closer to a hallway that lead to the Planetarium room.
Cecil, Gus, and Reginald looked around in confusion as so far they did not see hide nor hair of their replacement and for a moment they feared he got torn apart by the lions or even by the Hun's. That is until Larry jumped out from hiding behind the doorway they were about to walk through, screaming at them and waving his arms around like a mad man. This caused the three old men to gasp in shock and even hold their chests where their hearts, now that may have been a bit dramatic but that didn't mean getting jump scared didn't scare them. Cecil, Gus, and Reginald also didn't really think that that was warranted seeing as Larry was clearly alive, tired and stressed maybe, but still very much alive and in one piece. Said male however thought it was very warranted seeing as he got urinated on and bit by a monkey, hit by a toy train, nearly eaten, almost attacked by Hun's, and many more things. All while Cecil, Gus, and Reginald got to relax and have fun at what had probably been their retirement party judging by what he heard when he had called Cecil after stumbling across an alive Rexy.
"Oh! Oh, don't do that. We're too old for surprises." Cecil said as he as he had his hands against his stomach.
"Really? I thought you liked surprises. Like, uh, how you surprised me with the fact that everything in the museum comes to life at night. That little... sweetheart." Larry said as he was extremely irritated and annoyed at everything that had transpired since he came to work last night.
"Larry, we wanted to tell you. You never would've believed us." Cecil stated trying to get the clearly upset younger male to see reason and calm down.
"Do you have any idea what I've been through tonight?" Larry asked in a very hushed and stressed out tone of voice.
"What?" Gus asked having not heard what Larry said.
"I said have you any idea what I've been through tonight, Gus?" Larry asked again in a louder tone of voice causing Gus to be taken aback in shock.
"Keep a lid on it, butterscotch!" Gus remarked back not liking basically being yelled at.
"Look, I don't-I don't even know if what happened last night was real or not, but I did not sign up for this OK? I just need a regular job that-that-that-that's not life-threatening and pays my bills. So thank you very much, and, uh, I left my uniform in the office, and I will be seeing you." Larry said pushing his way past Cecil and Gus in the process as he headed towards the front doors of the museum.
"Larry!" Gus shouted after the retreating form that is Larry Daley but the shout fell on deaf ears.
Leaving the museum Larry quickly started going down the front steps with the intent of heading home to either attempt to file for unemployment or to look through the newspaper for jobs. Either way he needed to do something fast in order to keep Erica off of his back, he didn't have to worry when it came to her fiance Don though cause that guy is too busy trying to weasel his way in on his relationship with Nicky. Though speak of the devil and he shall appear because not only did he see his son who was clearly on his way to school but Don as well who was probably heading to work. This caused Larry to be extremely confused because usually when Nicky is not with him on Wednesday's or the weekends Erica is the one who walks or drives their son to school.
"Dad." Nicky said when he saw his dad leaving the museum.
"Hey. Hey, buddy. What are you guys doing here?" Larry asked as he walked up to Nicky and Don.
"Oh, Erica had to be in court early this morning, so I'm taking Mr. Big Stuff here to school." Don said whilst looking at Nicky as he lightly nudged the ten year old's shoulder with his fist. "But he wanted to swing by, see you in the new job." He said with a smile as he looked back towards Larry.
"Oh." Larry said softly with a nod before looking at his son.
"It's so awesome that you're working here." Nicky said as he seemed to just adore the fact that his dad was working at the museum.
"Hey, Nicko, wanna take a little lookie-doo inside? Maybe your dad will give you a VIP tour." Don said as he really was trying to impress Nicky with a cool idea like that.
"You know what? Um, we're pretty slammed this morning. Yeah, but, Nicky, I promise, I'll, uh, I'll show you around soon, OK? Deal?" Larry asked because seeing that happy look of adoration on his sons face made him suddenly not have the heart to quit this job.
"Deal." Nicky agreed as he nodded his head happy that he would not only get to spend time with his dad but he'd get a tour as well.
"All right." Larry said whilst smiling because if his son was happy then maybe he could give this job another night.
"Bye, Dad." Nicky said as he walked forward and gave his dad a hug around the waist.
"Bye." Larry murmured as he returned the hug and kissed the top of his sons head.
"Love you." Nicky stated because he never wants his dad to forget that.
"Love you, too, buddy." Larry said as the hug ended and he ushered him off to follow Don.
"Bye, now. All right." Don said whilst ruffling Nicky's hair as they started walking again.
Staying outside for just a little bit longer Larry watched as Don and Nicky crossed the street, the bond trader holding the ten year old's hand as they walk. Though they did run a bit in order to hop over a puddle that was right infront of the side walk curb as they continued on their merry way. As they disappeared from view Larry turned to look at the museum before he slowly trudged his way up the stairs and back inside the museum that he had just decided to try and quit working at. After walking through the revolving doors he walked towards the three old night guards that were standing huddled together talking quietly a few feet ahead of him. Gus and Cecil didn't notice that he was walking towards them seeing as they had their backs to him but Reginald did see that Larry was closely approaching them.
"Hey, Larry." Reginald greeted causing his two colleagues to turn towards Larry.
"So... I was thinking maybe I'll give it one more night." Larry explained with a small nod since he meant it.
"I'm glad you came around. Welcome back." Cecil said happily with a grin as he looks at Larry.
"You, new night guard. Here, now." The museum director, Dr. McPhee, ordered as he pointed to the spot infront of him.
As Larry walked over to Dr. McPhee the three old night guards watched on in curious confusion as they wondered why the museum director needed to talk to their replacement. They hoped that Larry didn't let one of the major exhibits escape or that something had been destroyed because there wouldn't be enough time to find a replacement for the replacement if he gets fired. Now Dr. McPhee isn't exactly a straight forward type of guy, in fact his answers to things never seem to make up a complete coherent thought half the time when he's talking to people. His face didn't give away anything either so Larry was essentially walking in blind as he came to a stop infront of who will be his boss for another night or longer if he sticks around. He would honestly worry about that later though as he first needs to figure out what exactly has made Dr. McPhee need to talk to him so badly that he basically commanded him to come over.
"What's up?" Larry asked but his seemingly casual question didn't make the doctor very happy.
""What's up?" Oh, well, take a walk with me, and I'll show you, Mr. What's Up." Dr. McPhee said as he really was not in the mood for that sort of question. "Come on." He said as he motioned for Larry to follow him as they headed to the diorama room. "So would you kindly do me the favor of explaining this?" Dr. McPhee asked as he stopped infront of the Wild West diorama and pointed at something.
Leaning in to get a closer look Larry now saw what had upset the museum director as he was looking at Octavius trapped in a stockade in the Wild West diorama. Next to the trapped Roman general was Jedediah, said cowboy had a smug look on his face as he stood there with his arms crossed. Now to Larry it was quite obvious that the two miniatures had gotten into some kind of dispute or in this case a punishment just as the sun was rising for the day. So instead of them being in their proper places and in their proper poses they were stuck like that until tonight where Larry was sure they would continue to attack and punish each other. Dr. McPhee doesn't know that though, infact the upset museum director probably thought that the new night guard had tampered with the exhibit to get a few laughs.
"Ooh, OK, uh... I'm guessing, and I'm just spit balling here, but, uh, looks like that Roman dude got a little cocky and climbed over into the Wild West, and the cowboy knows the Roman dude wants to take over his territory." Larry explained completely oblivious to Dr. McPhee's clearly unamused facial expression. "So he rounded up a posse and put him in the stockade." He finished explaining and looked at his boss as said man let out a mocking laugh.
"Let's all laugh at me, the comedy night guard." Dr. McPhee stated sarcastically as he stopped letting out mock laughter. ""No", is the answer. Sarcasm, back at you, with your, your humor box. I wasn't laughing." He said as Larry stayed quiet but deep down he was a bit confused as to why the doctor was being sarcastic with him. "Pretending to laugh, if that's what you want, some sort of battle of humor. Do you?" Dr. McPhee asked much to Larry's awkward confusion.
"No. I don't want a... No, I don't want a battle of humor." Larry said feeling more uncomfortable and awkward than confused.
"No, you don't. Because it'd be a bloodbath." Dr. McPhee declared basically saying that if there was a battle of humor he would win hands down. "Nothing funny about Little Big Horn. No. I find it about as funny as a fanciest... It's not funny, OK? And I will not stand for this type of blatant... If I'm not clear, tell me." He said though he definitely was not clear as he kept trailing off or would not finish a sentence towards the end. "Am I clear?" Dr. McPhee asked since that was not a rhetorical question/statement.
"Yeah." Larry affirmed in response to the question.
"Yeah." Dr. McPhee mirrored Larry's affirmation before sending the night guard on his way.
"Hey, Cecil." Larry called out as he jogged back into the main room and saw that Cecil looked like he was about to leave. "You got an extra copy of that instruction manual?" He asked when he caught up to the older male who had stopped walking and turned towards him.
"Oh, no, I'm afraid not, Larry." Cecil said as that answer caused Larry to feel very disheartened. "Listen, I'll tell you what you do. Read some books, brush up on your history. Helped me alot when I first started out." He advised in response to the disheartened look on the other night guards face.
With that Cecil turned and left, leaving Larry standing there wondering what to do in order to brush up on his history seeing as he has never been one to study for a job. Though he then saw the receptionist, Rebecca, that he had met the other day giving a tour to some school kids and decided to tag along at the back of the group. Rebecca took the kids to many different exhibits including the Hall of African mammals where he got got strange looks from the kids and Rebecca for laughing. He had laughed because she said that the Capuchin monkey was known for its loving and generous nature whilst pointing at the stuffed monkey that he knew was Dexter. Though as Rebecca ushered the kids off to the next exhibit he stayed behind to sort of threatened the monkey even though part of him doubted that Dexter could hear him talking. As Larry then jogged to catch up with the group he noticed they were infront of the Sakagawea exhibit he managed to get Rebecca's attention and asked if the Native American woman was deaf. Though this caused the brunette to get fed up with her tour continuously getting interrupted by the night guard as she excused herself and told the kids to go take a closer look at Sakagawea.
"What are you doing?" Rebecca inquired wanting to know why Larry kept interrupting her.
"Well, I'm gonna be here every night, and I just wanted to learn a bit more about what I'm guarding." Larry explained as Rebecca nodded as she slightly understood what he wanted to do. "Actually, I've got a bunch of questions. Maybe, I don't know, when you get a break, could I buy you a cup of coffee or something?" He offered in a questioning way to see if that's something she may want.
"Cup of coffee?" Rebecca asked wanting to know the details of having him buy her a coffee.
"Yeah, I mean, just purely a, you know, colleague to colleague information download sort of coffee." Larry descried since he didn't want Rebecca to think that this was a date or anything like that.
"I finish in 20 minutes. I'll meet you outside." Rebecca replied after checking her watch to see what time it currently was.
"Thank you so much." Larry said relieved that Rebecca would go get coffee with him and maybe shine some light on the history behind the people in the exhibits.
"Your welcome." Rebecca said as she went back to her tour group and continued her tour.
20 minutes later Rebecca had met Larry outside like she said she would as they went and got a coffee and were just walking around talking to each other. Currently he was silently listening as she talked about Sakagawea and about what she did as she called the Native American woman the ultimate working mother. Rebecca called her this because she did everything related to helping Lewis and Clark to find the Pacific ocean whilst carrying her newborn baby on her back. In response to that Larry called her quite the Sacaga-way-an expert only to be told that the correct word to use was Sacagawean since he had pronounced it wrong. The night guard however honestly didn't know if that was the correct pronunciation or not as he just decided to let it go as Rebecca mentioned that Sakagawea was the topic of her dissertation. Larry was shocked at that but not about the dissertation part of the statement, he was shocked at the fact that Rebecca had been working on the same dissertation for 4 years. However he soon understood why it was taking her so long as it was more of a 900 page book rather than just a single paper about Sakagawea as he ended up telling her why he became a security guard. In the end he did finally get some answers, mostly about Attila the Hun as she had told him that Attila had actually been the only person that the Roman's viewed as a threat.
From there he went to the library, finding all the book's that he needed as he sat on the floor with his back against the book shelf reading the books. For the most part he stuck with book's about Attila the Hun, learning many things about Attila and his Huns as Attila was known as the 'scourge of God'. He also learnt that Attila and his men tore off their helpless victims limbs, and that he was know for his superstitious belief's. Apparently when Attila was alive he had surrounded himself with sorcerers and magicians who advised and mystified him with their abilities in the ancient dark arts of black magic. From there he moved onto books about Ancient Egypt, not much was said about Ahkmenrah besides the fact that he died from a young age after only being Pharaoh for a few years. However he found quite a bit about the Nameless Pharaoh as he read the honestly very short book with vigorous interest.
"The Nameless Pharaoh was said to have gained control of Egypt at the age of 12, ruling for 6 short years before mysteriously disappearing. Those suspected of the Pharaoh's disappearance were caught shortly after it happened but subsequently took the whereabouts of the missing Pharaoh to their grave. One simply shouting "We did what was right, he was a sign from Anubis himself that the end was coming!" as he took his last breath." Larry read aloud to himself with a frown on his face as he was nearly done with this book, it literally only had 6 pages of information. "Not long after the Pharaoh's death his Uncle took command of the thrown. Despite the fact that the Pharaoh's name has been lost to history the Ancient Egyptian's said they will always remember the great things he did whilst in command." He finished as he closed the book and put it on the finished pile.
Larry then sighed heavily, he knew he would have to be careful when it came to Attila but his thought's drifted to Ahkmenrah and the Nameless Pharaoh. The books didn't say that they were evil which begged the question as to why were they left locked in their sarcophagus's all this time? Did Cecil and the other guards fear that there was some unknown curse or spell placed upon the two mummified Pharaoh's when they were buried? Or did they think it would be too dangerous to let two living breathing people walk around the museum rather than wax figures and stuffed animals? Either way it didn't necessarily seem like they have any evidence to warrant locking them up and neither did Teddy when he said Ahkmenrah had been locked up for 54 years. Though seeing as there was nothing he could do about that now and since the library only helped him a little bit he went home and finished up his research on the computer. He researched the Easter Island Head, the stage coach, the kind of monkey that Dexter is, and even Roman war strategies as he caught a glimpse of a picture on his desk.
The picture was of Larry kneeling on one knee to be at Nicky's height on a board walk as he held a hockey stick whilst Nicky who was in his jersey and holding his helmet. It had been taken after one of his son's many hockey games that his team had won this year seeing as his son didn't look any younger in the picture than he does now. The picture itself was a reminder that he is doing all of this so he can have a steadier situation for Nicky, because he didn't want to be what causes Nicky to loose that happiness and adoration. Once he had felt that he had absorbed enough information to at least to at least survive this attempt number 2 of being a night guard he was packing a duffel bag. Larry was putting things like one of his sons protective hockey gloves, a remote control jeep, cheep little magic tricks, a wad of gum the size of a base ball, a lighter, and much more inside his bag. He was determined to succeed at this because in the end Erica was right, he needed a fall back because he cannot afford to have anymore of his ideas fail at being put into motion.
