Chapter 4: Greenhouse
As Klara headed down to the foyer, she saw the Dean of yesterday standing on the stairs, overseeing the students below with a cold stare. Klara wondered why she always looked so serious and hollow.
"Does she ever smile? You'd think she hated her job or something." Klara said.
"Uh... Her job is keeping a bunch of post-adolescent, magic-using youths alive. I for one wouldn't want that job, nor the responsibility." Mike answered.
Kiara shook her head as Mike walked on to the wall where their names were listed. Kiara turned to Klara, "All I know is that the Dean has been here for only a few years. I personally don't like her."
"Why is that?" Klara asked.
"Because of Mr. Azarios. He has been here since the beginning, before when Miss Golden came." Kiara said, causing Klara to frown in confusion. "The Dean, her name is Melissa Golden. Anyways, when she came to the school, there would be fights between her and Azarios about students coming here, particularly about the people who don't belong here."
"But why would Mr. Azarios fight about something like that?" Klara asked as they followed Mike.
"No one knows," Kiara sighed, "Some of the older students said it has something to do with the time when the twins finally arrive. Others say it's about the two warriors who built this place, but I still don't know a lot about that."
Klara nodded. "It would help to learn this place's history, there really seems to be a lot of secrets and mysteries. But anyway, thank you for sharing that stuff." Klara paused. "You said something about waiting for a set of twins to arrive?"
"I also know very little about that. All I know is that their parents are the two warriors. Why are you asking?"
"Just wanted to know who they are, perhaps."
Klara looked for her name on a piece of paper tacked on the wall, and saw that her Lux exam will take place in the greenhouse on the lawn.
"You got Mr. Azarios too? Nice! And mine is right before yours. Shall we walk over together?" Mike asked.
"Sure, I'd like that." Klara answered.
"I, however, have to trudge all the way across campus to the clock tower. I'll catch up with you later, Klara." Kiara said, starting to walk off, while Klara and Mike went for the door. On Klara's way, she passed the Dean standing with a classmate in the hall, and waved at her.
"Good Luck, freshmen." he shouted, causing Klara to laugh.
"Thanks, that means a lot. I have a feeling I'm really going to need it."
"Trust me, if this was an exam that even I could pass, you're going to be just fine." Drake answered.
Klara grinned at him before walking out the front door, following Mike.
"Hey, about earlier...Sorry if it felt like I was too invasive." Mike said.
"Don't worry about it. Kiara was just being cautious, but I know I can trust you and I think she knows now, too." Klara said.
"Still, I wish I could have been more helpful. It seems like you're going through a lot." Mike said, as they walked down the path leading to the greenhouse.
"You could say that, but I've got you and the famous Kiara in my corner. So I think I'll be alright." Klara said with a small smile.
"Kiara is something else, isn't she? She's as sharp as a knife, has a great sense of humor, and has a good fashion sense." Mike said.
"Oh? Your kind of person, huh? Sounds like someone's got a crush!" Klara said.
"Nah, it's not like that. I'm not a romantic type of guy."
"I see." Klara said, rolling her eyes.
As Klara crossed the lawn, Mike waved to a couple of people sitting on the edge of the lake. He high-fived another guy as he walked by.
"Okay, it's like day two. How do you know so many people?"
"Another one of my great magical talents. I'm totally a people person." Mike said. "Everyone wants a piece of this action!"
"It must be your otherworldly charm and man-of-mystery vibe."
"I like the sound of that. Makes me feel like I'm a knockoff Kurtis." Mike said.
"Who is Kurtis?" Klara asked.
"Ah, you don't know much about this place, like many who come here." Mike said, smiling. "He was the greatest Lux warrior who ever lived. He was the one who built this place nineteen years ago."
"Kiara told me a little about him. She said she doesn't pay attention to her history classes, so I'm still quite left in the dark."
"That's why I have one question for you. I heard you're the girl who came through the lake. How did you do that?" Mike asked.
"Mike, if I tell you… You can't tell anyone, Okay?" Klara said.
"yeah, of course. You're kind of worrying me a little though, Klara."
Klara took a deep breath before telling him everything that had happened to her within the last twenty-four hours.
"And then suddenly I'm here, and I'm absolutely losing it because I can't do magic, and then guess what? Turns out I can!"
"Whoa. But… How did you get here? Someone has to know there's been a mistake or something, right?"
"That's exactly what I've been asking! Although I'm starting to think it wasn't a mistake after all… That somebody wanted me here." Klara said.
"That's super spooky! I can't believe all of this happened to you." Mike gasped.
"Talking about this is such a relief. Kiara was way too casual when I told her about this, I was freaking out yesterday." Klara said and then thought what Kiara said earlier about the Dean and Mr. Azarios fighting about students coming here. Was it her who brought me here? She thought.
"Even in the magical world that's a pretty weird origin story, but don't worry, I'll help you figure this out." Mike said, bringing Klara out of her thoughts.
"Thanks, I'm gonna need all the help I can get, but you won't tell anyone, right?" Klara asked.
"That's a Lux oath." He said, raising his hand and smiling at her. They reached the greenhouse; Mike turned to her, "Now, if you'll excuse me, I've gotta go get told I'm a water Lux." With his parting words, he went in, while Klara waited outside.
