Lost Soul

Chapter 5

Hannah loved watching her parents interact. It had also been fascinating, but now it was even more so. Her dad helped her mom get ready for the surgery and was so gentle. Christine was scared and worried about Hannah's grandma, but excited to return to more of a normal. Hannah could only hope that the surgery was a success. She was worried about the memories of that day flooding back. It would be painful, for sure.

Hannah kissed her mom, wished her good luck and told her that she loved her. She gave her parents a few minutes alone before her mom was taken back for her surgery. It would be a long one and Hannah had endeavored to keep her dad calm the entire time. He was worried sick, both for Hannah's mom and grandma and he felt terribly for not being with his mom. Finally, about eleven; Kaitlyn called him and let him know that Elizabeth was through her surgery and was resting comfortably. The doctor had given him a good report on her, and all they were waiting for Christine to get out of her surgery. It wasn't until after two pm that Dr. Summers called them into a conference room. Mike and Hannah exchanged a look but followed him in.

"First and foremost; she came out of the surgery very well. We woke her up gently and I would say; some if not all of her cognitive abilities are back. Once she is better rested and not in so much pain, we will know more. We've sedated her to help her out." Dr. Summers explained.

"Good. Was she remembering her attack?" Mike asked.

"Honestly, she was in so much pain, if she was she didn't say. Its not a definite that she will. The mind has a way of insulating itself from remembering its traumas. You can visit her, of course, but I would say she will sleep until morning at least. Once she gets her rest out, she'll want to eat, and an Occupational Therapist and I will assess her to see if there has been any cognitive improvements. She did remember her full name, her children's names and birthdates, as well as her anniversary. As you might remember, during my exam; she didn't know those things, other then names. Just be patient. The recovery will seem futile but she is strong and she is determined. That is the biggest hurdle." Dr. Summers explained and then stood up. As they walked down the hallway, he explained that Christine would look fairly rough, and Hannah had to admit, he wasn't lying but like before; she endeavored to be there for her mom and dad.
