Chapter 5

As the ladies and Flying Monkeys began to approach the Palace they could see that chaos was erupting. Chistery screeched to his brethren and they quickly pushed forward, swooping down over the Palace courtyard. Their appearance did not help the chaos but they quickly found Fiyero who told them to find the Wizard. That was all the explanation they needed and they were off looking for the former Ozian leader.

"What the hell happened?" Elphaba couldn't believe what she was witnessing below. Soldiers and prisoners were fighting and killing each other in a large melee in the courtyard.

"I don't know but perhaps it's time to remind them who is boss," Glinda smirked. Elphaba chuckled and quickly conjured up a spell. An orb appeared just in front of her fingertips and she sent it toward the middle of the courtyard. When it reached its intended destination, it exploded, knocking all the people nearby to ground.

"It's the Witch!" Someone shouted. Electricity crackled at Elphaba's fingertips and she sent another orb into the courtyard. This one also exploded closer to the tent city that had been setup, knocking those she hadn't reached before down. Her next move was to put her hands into the sky and let her powers assault the sky. The sound of the electricity could only be compared to a day when the center of a thunderstorm was directly overhead. The ground shook and most hit the deck afraid for their safety.

"Enough!" Elphaba boomed, another spell helping the volume of her voice reach everyone. She suddenly heard a cacophony of Flying Monkey screeches. Glinda looked toward the noise as well and could see that they had the old man surrounded.

"Bring the Wizard to me!" The green woman demanded. Chistery and one of his brothers, Asil, grabbed the man and lifted him to the green woman. Some of the prisoners tried to shoot at the Flying Monkeys but quickly found themselves with weapons pointed at them. Fiyero, Lieutenant Zetti, and Lieutenant Dilek barked at their troops to quickly get those injured medical help and to round up those that were not. The cells were obviously compromised so something else would need to be done.

Chistery and Asil held the Wizard, who was obviously terrified, in front of Elphaba. She sneered at him, wishing that he had just left well enough alone but the lure of power was just too much. Glinda approached her and spoke first.

"What did you do? So many have died for nothing and yet you cannot help yourself," the blonde gave him a look.

"I did nothing. Those loyal to the true ruler of Oz freed me," the Wizard seemed to regain some composure.

"I should have Chistery and Asil let you go right now," Elphaba was seething. She had ended the spell that had increased her volume, which her friend was glad for.

"As tempting as that may be, he needs to stand trial for his crimes. We'll add escape attempt and counts of murder for any Gale Force or Vinkun soldier that has died due to your ill-conceived effort. Chistery, Asil, please make sure that our prisoner is confined in new quarters and the Flying Monkeys are now in charge of keeping an eye on him," Glinda gave him a look and Chistery nodded. Quickly the two Flying Monkeys took the Wizard away.

"We have more moles amongst us," Elphaba frowned.

"So it would seem. Perhaps it would be best to reach out to Fiyero's parents. We need help and we need it quickly," the blonde said.

"The best they could do would be to get here in a week. We don't have that long," the green woman shook her head before turning back towards the building that had blown up. Whoever had been attempting to attack them there did not seem to be heading their way but they could not be certain as darkness began to fall.

"Gather Fiyero and all the heads of the troops. We need numbers and we need to start interrogating the prisoners. I have a very bad feeling," Elphaba told her.

"As do I," Glinda heaved a sigh.
