Disclaimer: I do now own these characters. All rights go to Shonda Rhimes. Some scenes may be based off scenes that occurred in Grey's Anatomy.
Announcement: In this story, April and Lexie are super close friends. I know that they weren't in the show, but I like to think that if Lexie survived, their relationship would have blossomed. Also, I know this is a shorter chapter, but I wanted to split it up so the group being rescued could have a chapter of its own. I promise the next chapter is much longer! Thank you all for your reviews, they encourage me to keep writing! Please continue to leave me reviews.
Lost and Found
Owen Hunt finally had a break in his busy day. After seeing his doctors off that were on their way to Boise, an overwhelming amount of traumas came in. He was thankful that April was there to help him out with running the ER, but he had quite a bit of administrative work to do as well. During the traumas, it was evident that three of his best attendings weren't there, but he knew that they were doing an amazing surgery in Boise. The group of doctors performing the surgery were world renowned, and it was going to bring great press to the hospital. As he made his way to his office, Callie passed by him in a hurry. Shaking his head humorously, Owen shuffled into his office. Sitting down, he began to play the 48 messages that were left on his voicemail. Mindlessly he took notes, many of the messages being about the budget or patients complaining about the wait time for a procedure.
"Hi, Dr. Hunt. We just wanted to thank you so much for allowing your doctors to come help with this surgery today. They're running a few minutes later, but that's to be expected. Doctors love to run on their own schedule."
"Hi, Dr. Hunt. We, uh, we're getting a little concerned over here. Your doctors haven't shown up. Did they make the flight okay?"
"Dr. Hunt, it's now 5pm and your doctors were supposed to be here at 11am. I don't know what happened, but could you please check in on them? We're worried."
Owen's pen dropped as soon as he heard the last message, his mouth going dry. Immediately, Owen paged April Kepner and Jackson Avery up to his office. While waiting for them, he called the Boise hospital back, confirming that his doctors never showed up. Owen said that he was not aware of anything happening, but he knew his doctors, and they would do everything in their power to show up to such an important procedure. After promising to let them know what happened, Owen ended the call with the Boise Chief of Surgery.
"You paged?" April breathed, standing in the doorway. Nodding, Owen motioned her in to sit in the chair across from his desk. Moments later, Jackson appeared and took the seat next to April. "Have you two heard from Grey, Shepherd, Sloan?" he inquired, knowing that Lexie or Mark would be the most likely ones to contact them. Shaking their heads, April and Jackson glanced at each other.
"What happened?" April asked, sitting up straighter in her seat.
"They never showed up at Boise," Owen shared point blank, throwing his pen down on his desk. "Damn it!" he yelled, his jaw going tense. "Can you help? Look to see if there were any accidents?" Owen muttered, flipping through his pages of notes. April nodded, pulling out her phone to look for any accidents. Owen's phone began to ring, and he immediately answered it.
"Chief Hunt," Owen answered, picking his pen back up only to start clicking it back and forth. "Yeah, okay… where? Okay," he replied, hanging up the phone quickly. "That was the operator connected with the flight. They lost track of the plane hours ago. Why did they just call?!" Owen tensed, standing up from his chair. He began to pace back and forth in front of his desk. April and Jackson shared a look before Jackson decided to speak up.
"Dr. Hunt, are they calling someone to look for them?" Jackson questioned, crossing his arms.
"Yes," Owen responded, continuing his pacing back and forth. "Once they find them, they're going to have to bring them to a hospital. We don't know what hospital they will be brought to… let's get their loved ones to gather here. Once they're found and stable, we'll get them back here as soon as possible," Owen muttered to himself after several minutes, sitting down. "April, can you call Thatcher Grey and Carolyn Shepherd?" he asked, skimming through the list of people on the plane. "Jackson, call Julia and Callie," Owen replied, his hands beginning to shake. His wife was out there, possibly hurt or dead. He couldn't focus.
"Of course," April replied, scurrying out of the room. She was able to get in touch with Thatcher and Carolyn, letting them know that she had no additional information at this time other than that they were lost. She promised that she would provide an update once she heard anything.
Jackson went into an empty conference room, sighing as he was the one who had to deliver this news to Callie and Julia. He decided to call Julia first. She picked up on the second ring. Jackson informed her that the plane Mark was on had gone off the grid earlier in the day, and his whereabouts were unknown. He heard Julia start to sniffle as he let out a small sigh. He let Julia know she was welcome to come wait for news at the hospital.
The next call was going to be worse. Callie answered the phone immediately. "Avery, what do you need?" she questioned, sounding slightly annoyed.
"Dr. Torres. There's been a situation…" he began, explaining what he knew so far.
About half an hour later, Callie came running into Owen's office, her face red and blotchy. "What the hell happened?!" she demanded, looking to Owen for answers. He shook his head and looked down, still waiting for a call about the location of his doctors.
"I don't know," Owen admitted, his pacing never ceasing. Several minutes later, Julia showed to wait for an update along with Callie. April and Jackson joined the rest of them. There was clear tension in the room, complete silence surrounding all of them. Owen did not receive a call from the plane company until early morning. All eyes were on him as he spoke on the phone.
"They're being taken to Boise Hospital. I'm going to get a plane for us to fly out there," Owen reported, immediately calling for a jet. Callie let Owen know that she had to stay here with Sofia. Her daughter needed one of her parents to be there for her. Owen understood completely, paging for Dr. Webber and Dr. Bailey as he wanted them to accompany them. "Julia, why don't you stay here, as well. There's not much that you'll be able to do while we're there," Owen stated, making his way toward the door. "Once we hear how they are, we will let you know," he told the two women, motioning for April and Jackson to follow him. The three of them, along with Bailey and Webber, boarded the private jet which took them to Boise Hospital. Bailey and Webber were shocked to hear the news about their colleagues, trying to remain calm for Owen as he was anything but calm.
Arizona began to shiver, noticing that the fire was beginning to go out. Once her eyes were opened, she noticed that the sun was starting to come up. She let out a breath, relieved that the night was over. "Mark," she called, moving her hand to shake his arm. Groaning, Mark peeled open his eyes. At first he thought it was Lexie that had woken him, but when he looked down at her, he noticed that she was still asleep. Glancing to his other side, Mark saw Arizona looking at him. "Do we have any more medicine?" she asked, tilting her head back in pain.
"I'll go look," Mark responded, rubbing his palm across Lexie's thigh. "Lex," he whispered, waiting for her eyes to blink open. "I've got to get Robbins some medicine, do you want some, too?"
"Yeah, please," Lexie replied, detangling herself from Mark's arms. Lexie glanced toward the fire, noting that it needed more wood put on it to keep the group warm. Mark returned moments later with medication for both Arizona and Lexie, along with a bottle of water for them to share. He went to retrieve some additional wood to place on the fire before he returned to sitting beside Lexie.
"How're you feeling?" Mark asked Lexie, surveying her body once again for any damage.
"I'm okay," she sighed, setting the bottle of water down on the ground in front of her. Lexie looked at the dial on the oxygen tank, noticing that she was out. She bit her lip, not wanting to tell Mark and make him fret anymore. "Mark, I'm out," she murmured, knowing that he would find out eventually.
Mark stood up immediately, moving around the site and into the main cabin of the plane to look for additional oxygen. After searching for several minutes, Mark came up empty handed. "Damn it," he yelled, dropping to a squat position. He hadn't let his emotions overtake him yet, as he wanted to remain strong for Lexie. However, not being able to find oxygen for her made Mark realize that their supplies were dwindling. Moments later, Mark pulled himself together to go and rejoin Lexie. Lexie saw that Mark came back empty handed, a frown displayed on her lips. She didn't know if she would last long without oxygen. She might but she didn't know how bad her injuries were. All she knew was that yesterday, before she had oxygen, she was struggling to breathe.
"They're going to find us," Mark said, kneeling in front of Lexie. "Hey, look at me," he whispered, placing a finger under her chin and tilting her head up toward him. "It's going to be okay. We will get through this."
Lexie sniffled but nodded, not wanting to show Mark how scared she was. The rest of the group eventually woke up, no one really knowing what to say. A few hours later, there was a sound of buzzing that sounded like it was getting closer and closer. Everyone's eyes widened, as those that could hopped up to their feet. They began flailing their arms in the air, screaming, though no one would be able to hear that over the helicopter. The helicopter began to circle around them, looking for a place to land.
"We're going home, Lexie," Arizona smiled through her tears, grabbing Lexie's hand. Nodding, Lexie looked over at Arizona, squeezing her hand. They were going home.
