'Italics'-thoughts in other language
Hi all! I'd like to start by thanking those who have followed and favorited the story so far. Here's the chapter where the series starts. Sorry for the long wait, the semester was killer.
September 4th, 2010
The wind flew past him at an astounding rate, the sound dissipating as he flew faster into the sunset of the eastern United States. Going at around Mach 1 (not nearly his full speed), afforded Alejandro Matías a wide view of the mountains ahead of him. Wearing the full suit of Saiyan armor, Alex (as his friends called him) or Raddis (as he was known by the almost extinct Saiyans) flew around towards the outskirts of Gotham City, from where he would land, change his clothes, and proceed through the Metro towards his family's apartment in the city. He decided to fly home today instead of using his Instant Transmission ability to give himself the chance to relax and ponder the last three years of his life-spent training under King Kai.
It had been quite the journey: first finding out he was among the last members of a warrior race, the political issues that led to his home planet's destruction and having to figure out his abilities to defend himself against the forces that led to that planet's destruction. It was even more shocking that he managed to find someone with Ki-based powers to train him in his Saiyan abilities. Though he realized that King Kai was a god-send. 'Maybe because he's a representative of an actual God? Who would have thought?' Alex's thoughts were drawn to the intensity of the training in his first few weeks with Kai. After convincing his parents of the veracity of Kai's identity, they had reluctantly agreed to allow their adopted son to train under the apparent gym teacher, having him meet him at a heretofore undisclosed location just outside of Gotham for the training grounds he had set up, as well as trips to King Kai's planet. Alex thought that would be the easiest part. How wrong he was.
The first thing that Alex had noticed about King Kai's planet was that the gravity was much heavier than on Earth-about ten times as much. The first thing they had done was lug around these massive weights for about three weeks to prepare his body to harness his Ki reserves. Once that grueling ordeal was done, and he could lift them up with ease, they began harnessing his Ki. It took about two days, three days less than the week Kai had predicted it would take, for Alex to form a ball of Ki in his hands and learn his very first move, the basic Ki blast. From then it had progressed to learning the basic Ki attacks, like the blast, the eye lasers, the power up, the Masenko, etc.
The training really got interesting one day when they were on Earth and Kai began to teach him about the fundamentals of how Ki worked. "Now listen up, most Ki techniques are essentially mind-body techniques, requiring training of both the mind and the body to be successful", began King Kai. "Now that we've tempered your body to such a degree as to be able to handle what your mind can dish out, we need to talk about Ki control. Now from a metaphysical perspective, Saiyans and other Ki-sensitive races can fill their bodies with more and more Ki. Through such training the Ki becomes increasingly dense to the point where it saturates all the bodie's cells. As they fill a body's cells, the particles of energy become more refined and smaller and more powerful, though they still fill up the same amount of space. So the more you train, the more powerful you will become, Alex. And with your Saiyan ability to become s tronger every time your cells break apart due to Ki expenditure, you might even be as strong, if not stronger, than Superman one day. Though now we need to focus on Ki transformations."
"Now what I'm going to have you do is draw your Ki from the energy field in your lower body and send it out to your back, chest, and limbs. The Ki should travel under your skin and bulge out your muscles, manifesting as wind, electricity, and heat. This will open all the cells in your body so you can tap into their energy at a subatomic level. Your molecules and subatomic particles will open so you can do this, but only for a short amount of time."
Alex was excited to get this aspect of the training started, but his enthusiasm was tempered by King Kai's next warning: "However, using this technique, which I've named Kaioken, will cause your body's cells to die, so they need to be replenished. That's why I commandeered that Saiyan healing tank in the pod you came in. At your current level, if you use this technique too much, and try to use it beyond one times its power, you could very well die." Finished King Kai.
"But what's the point of this technique if it can kill me so easily?", Alex inquired. Surely Kai wouldn't put him in danger just to prove he could master it.
"Because once you master all twenty levels of the Kaioken, you'll be in a much better position to defeat both Vegeta and put a stop to Frieza's madness." With that they started on the hardest training anyone could go through. It took about a month for Alex to completely master the one times Kaioken, and about 3 more months for him to be able to withstand the Kaioken times 2. After that his training progressed rapidly. With each new level of the Kaioken unlocked, it was a matter of a dip in the Saiyan healing pod to rebuild his cells back stronger and more invulnerable-at least according to Alex's Saiyan biology. By the end of the year he had mastered the Kaioken times 10, and by the second year of training he had mastered all 20 transformations of the Kaioken, though he was warned by his master never to use the technique to its full limit unless as a last resort.
"Remember you won't always have access to a healing tank," Kai warned him. In addition to his ki manipulation training, Alex had mastered the Kamehameha Wave as well as a myriad of other ki attacks. All in all, it had been an extremely hard three years for Alex Matías, but it had paid off immensely.
Such ruminations were on Alex's mind when suddenly he detected a huge ki signature entering Earth's atmosphere. Fine tuning his ki-detection ability he had learned from Kai, he deduced that the signature was coming in fast from the north, and would crash somewhere on the northern outskirts of Gotham. Steeling himself from whatever might come, he decided to increase his speed to meet the threat head on. 'Maybe it's Vegeta?', he thought. The Saiyan Prince was trying to locate Alex, or Raddis as he probably new him best. 'No time to waste, here we go!', he finished as he speed up to Mach 5.
If Bruce Wayne had to describe how his day was going, it could be encapsulated by one word: stressful. Being one of the world's most important tech billionaires by day (and a masked vigilante patrolling Gotham's street by night) would do that to any person, he reasoned. But the reason for his current stressful demeanor was the fact that it was almost three months into the inauguration of his covert ops team composed of the Justice League's sidekicks. While they had proven themselves capable of handling the basic things the Justice League usually handled, Batman knew that they had not been tested under the duress necessary for him to fully trust them alone. Such thoughts were a constant reminder of just how little he knew of some of the Team: he trusted Robin enough, but there were still metaphorical blanks to be filled when it came to Superboy and Miss Martian. He would have to look into that when he was done with the current enigma he was reviewing evidence for: the strange series of energy readings he had been detecting sporadically around the outskirts of Gotham. They started around three years ago, and every time they had manifested, about every three months, they had doubled in intensity. Regular detection technology available to him (his satellites for example) were useless because it was as if they were coming from their own pocket dimension.
The other issue bearing on his mind was that a new vigilante seemed to have started operating in Gotham at around the same time. And Batman, and by extension Bruce Wayne, had every reason to believe this new crime fighter was super-powered. At first the reports seemed non concerning enough: a few foiled muggings, a few robberies mysteriously stopped. Until Batman got a closer look at the collateral damage: a few burn marks on the side of an alleyway evidenced the use of some strange energy, and eyewitness accounts from the able-bodied criminals that were left suggested they were taken out by an expert martial artist, if the bruises were any indication of strike patterns. Eye-witnesses also described a blurry masked figure dressed in black and green appearing over rooftops just before the purported interventions, but that this figure would seemingly vanish instantaneously without a trace once the "job" was done. A possible teleporter, perhaps? That still left a lot of questions unanswered, questions that the Dark Knight would have easily found answers for had he been able to pin-point the new vigilante's movement patterns and area of operations, an endeavor which had eluded him these past years. The reason was simple, but the theory took a while to be formulated: the vigilante seemed to know the Dark Knight's whereabouts at all times, and would adjust his area of operations accordingly. If Batman was operating in a certain area of Gotham one night, the next day's reports would put the other vigilante in an opposite part of town. An explanation for this theory eluded him, but he guessed it had something to do with the strange energy residues he was discovering as well as the energy readings he was picking up. Momentarily putting aside the current enigma, he considered whether to get the League to intervene on this matter. 'No, this is my city', he thought and was about to retire from the night when the Bat Computer picked up a strange energy reading exploding ten miles from the outskirts of the city. 'This is huge, perhaps out masked vigilante making an appearance? Maybe I could send the team to check this out, kill two birds with one stone', Batman thought as he pulled up another screen to communicate with the Team.
Alex was flying when suddenly, the huge energy signature headed his way. Immediately recognizing it as a Saiyan signature, he wondered how one survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta. These ruminations were cut short when a pod ship crash landed a hundred feet from where he was flying. Immediately stopping and landing, he went to investigate when the hatch opened and out came a burly, extraordinarily strong Saiyan warrior. The warrior had a headset similar to the one Alex crash landed on earth with, but a different color. The headset was beeping out information in the Saiyan language while the warrior was looking at him. The beeping stopped, and the warrior addressed Alex in English. "So you're the scientists boy? I thought I sensed a weakling around! This will be easy!"
Alex tensed, getting ready for a fight. He sensed he would need to use all the abilities learned from King Kai to prevail in the coming fight. Alex powered up to Kaoiken times three, and the warrior like wise powered up for the fight. As they approached each other, bursting with energy, Alex was unaware that their fight would attract unwanted attention from none other than the Justice League, forever changing the course of Alex Matía's life forever.
