DETENTION
Harry had spent the rest of the weekend in the Hospital Wing, whereas the other three had been roaming the school. They had talked about the Dementor attacks countless of times. Shivers went down Ron's spine every time anyone said the word, Dementor. Daisy seemed somewhat unfazed by the encounter she had earlier in the year and her reaction at the Quidditch match. She was more focused on how Harry was doing. She was truly worried about him. Being an overprotective father, Remus had been researching every possibility of her strange 'blackouts'. He had ordered Dumbledore to use some of his connections in order to get answers as Remus himself was working through the books available at the Hogwarts library.
Ron, Hermione and Daisy spent hours in the infirmary with Harry. They tried their best to cheer him up, but he was heartbroken over the loss of his broomstick and the sudden memory flow from his childhood. He refused to talk about hearing his mother plead for The Dark Lord to spare his life. Everyone could see it hurt him just to think about. So instead, they fed Harry the remaining sweets they had.
Monday came around quick, and they all dreaded going to the Defence Against the Dark Arts class as they were afraid of having Snape, again. Yet everyone showed up in time for the lesson.
"Morning students," greeted an exhausted looking Professor Lupin as he walked up the rows of desks towards the teachers table in front of the class. Students loudly sighed in relief. Harry, Ron, Hermione and Daisy all sat on the front row. They were very excited to go back to Lupin's practical way of teaching. Daisy couldn't help but smile like an idiot. She was so relieved to see her father back in once piece.
"So, can anyone guess what today's lesson will be about?" Remus asked as he sat down with a small thud. He looked utterly exhausted, his clothes hanging more loosely than usual. "And no, we are not continuing the werewolf theme Professor Snape had started. Therefore, no need to hand in the assignments," he added. Hermione gasped and complained about already having finished hers.
Harry put his hand up, wanting to answer the question. Lupin nodded his head, indicating for him to talk.
"Grindylows, Sir," Harry said, proudly remembering being shown one. Remus clasped his hands together, congratulating him on a correct answer. Daisy gave him a warm smile. Ever since Remus had returned to his usual self, Daisy had too. That had not gone unnoticed by her three friends, especially Hermione.
The class went on as planned. Remus had successfully captivated every student with the green little monster. They were classified as dark creatures because they would occasionally eat a human. Their diets usually consisted of fish, algae and smaller sea creatures.
Every student had been allowed to see the Grindylow in the glass container, some had pulled disgusted face expression while others laughed at the little monster.
Daisy had stared at it in fascination, looking at every little feature. Harry smiled, thinking about how similar her behaviour was to her fathers and Hagrid's.
Rubeus Hagrid, the new Care of Magical Creatures Professor, was a good friend of Harry, Ron and Hermione. Lately he had taken an interest in Daisy too. She had spent hours helping him with the creatures around Hogwarts.
Hagrid had invited them all down for a cup of tea so they could take care of Buckbeak, the hippogriff. He had gotten in trouble earlier for biting Draco Malfoy after being provoked. The four students and Hagrid were all very protective of the hippogriff. Especially Daisy, she had a 'lovely relationship' with him as Hagrid had said.
"Does anyone know why they are dangerous?" Professor Lupin asked in the end of the class. No one put their hand up, they all just looked confused around. Hermione was awkwardly staring at the Professor. Both Harry and Ron looked confused at her. They hardly ever saw her not answer questions. Daisy slowly put her hand up, looking nervous.
"Yes, Daisy. Go ahead," Professor Lupin encouraged with a smile. Daisy looked around at the other students at the front row, not daring to look behind her. Having been home-schooled had its negative consequences, such as anxiety around others. She often thought about why she was placed in the house of the brave when she was such a wreck on the inside.
"They are known to have killed humans by strangling them or holding them under water long enough for the person to drown. They are aggressive towards witches, wizards and Muggles," Daisy answered. Remus smiled proudly at his daughter. "Correct," he said, smiling even more, showing just how proud he was of her.
"Right, class dismissed. Off you go!" Professor Lupin called. "Mind staying behind a minute, Daisy?" he asked, looking at his daughter with a sudden change in body language. She slowly sat down in her chair again, looking down at her hands. Daisy felt very exposed and slightly scared. She knew very well that she was in trouble by the looks of her father. His shoulders hung low, and his earlier cheerful person was gone.
Harry looked at her for a moment before running after Ron and Hermione. He wanted to stay with Daisy as he could see how anxious she was.
"Professor Snape told me that you got detention for an outburst in class," Remus said in a neutral tone. His hair was a mess and did not get any better after he ran a hand through it.
"He talked about killing werewolves and how they are not worthy of living…" Daisy mumbled, still looking at her hands. She was aware that her reaction was not entirely alright, but something about Professor Snape just sent her over the edge.
"I figured that was the reason after hearing about the essay. I don't know if you remember the stories, I used to tell you as little, but Severus and I used to be students here," Remus said, a small smile found its way onto his otherwise serious face. Daisy looked up for the first time. At first her eyes were filled with sadness, but as a thought crossed her mind a mischievous twinkle emerged.
"Severus, is it?" she let out a small laugh and so did her father. She had of course heard him referring to the Professor with his given name before, but she took a chance at deflating the tension.
"Right, detention is with me tonight after dinner. Curtesy of Severus himself. Double punishment he said," Remus explained after a while. He pushed the stories about his youth away as he patted her on the shoulder and went back to his desk.
She quickly gathered all of her belongings, dropping them in her shoulder bag. With a quick wave, she ran out the door. Not because she was late for a class. She was the only one from her friend group who had a free period after DADA class that day, curtesy of Dumbledore considering her old and recent issues. She was currently the only student at Hogwarts who had no electives. It gave her a lot of time to study on her own, mainly reading up on the few things she had not learned from home, such as potions. Whenever Professor Snape had opened the Potion classroom for extra studying, she had been practising her skills in hopes of improving enough to avoid getting yelled at for being 'another dunderhead who is useless' as Snape had called her countless of times.
Whenever he had seen her attempting to brew a potion, he had his usual stern look plastered on his face. After Sirius Black had entered the castle, Daisy had avoided the man as if he was the plague. She resented him with every fibre in her body after hearing him accuse her father of opening the doors for a killer. Severus had occasionally looked at her during classes with so much resentment that she felt nauseated.
Shaking her head, trying to forget her longing for learning more about potions, she wandered outside the castle. The headmaster had made new rules as to walking outside because of the Dementors roaring in the sky, no one was to walk alone. Thereby Hagrid, the half-giant, was patiently waiting by the gates. He had invited her by for tea, knowing she would be free.
"Well, hello there little one," he greeted as she skipped towards him. Daisy's body warmed after hearing him speak. He had a calming effect on her, making her less anxious in his company. "Hello," she greeted.
Together they made their way to Hagrid's hut. The small walk there was not entirely as she had hoped. The only thing she had anticipated was the sudden coldness of walking past the Dementors. Hagrid was whistling a sad tune, setting the mood to be rather sombre. Once at the little building that he called home, Hagrid informed her of the final decision on his dear hippogriff's life.
"He's being sentenced to death!" he yelled in frustration, throwing his arms up in the air. Daisy tried her best to comfort him with kind words, using a nonverbal spell she managed to conjure a tea pot and two mugs. One of the best spells her father had taught her when she was younger. One of the first she had mastered, seeing as both Lupin's were addicted to tea - and chocolate.
"Have a cup of tea, Hagrid. It'll help you feel better," she said in a gentle tone, pouring the tea into the mugs.
"You are very much like your father, you know," Hagrid said through small sobs. Daisy smiled, mostly to herself. They sat in silence for a while, drinking their tea and thinking about the poor creature who were to die for something that wasn't its fault. Daisy felt her stomach drop at the thought. All she wished for in that moment was a plan to save Buckbeak. She had become really fond of him after spending a lot of her free time with Hagrid while the others were in classes.
"We must get you back in time for supper," Hagrid suddenly said, standing up. Daisy looked out of the window, then at the watch on her arm. She had not noticed how much time had gone by. Nodding her head, she followed him back to the castle.
Harry, Ron and Hermione had saved a seat for her at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall, which she gladly took. Dinner went without much talk as everyone was tired. If not necessarily physically tired, but mentally exhausted. Harry was still struggling with having heard his mother's screams and no one blamed him for it. The other three friends all shared a look when Harry had hardly eaten anything, but no one spoke of it. They had agreed to give him a few days to gather his appetite before intervening.
Daisy let out a loud breath once dinner was over, "I'll see you guys at curfew."
Hermione gave her a warm smile and a quick hug before dragging the boys to the Gryffindor Tower. Alone once more, Daisy made her way to Lupin's office. The corridors seemed to be endless and too short at the same time. Funnily enough, she had never gotten detention before. The worst punishment she had endured while being home-schooled was having to do the dishes for a week without the use of magic. In her mind it wasn't a real punishment as she was used to it from before she learned the cleaning charm.
Standing in front of the classroom door, Daisy knocked with hesitation.
"Come in," said a voice on the other side. With flushed cheeks and her head down, she walked in. Remus was leaning on the doorframe to his private chambers, steaming hot mug in his hands.
"If you continue to hang your head like that, it will become stuck," he said with a chuckle. Daisy immediately straightened up her posture, still avoiding eye contact. Remus took a few steps closer to the teacher's desk. With a swift movement of his wand a roll of parchment, a quill and a bottle of ink appeared on one of the tables for the students.
"Severus suggested that I give you lines, but I'd rather you work on the essay from I know he gave you in Potion," Professor Lupin said as he sat down. Daisy finally looked at him and spoke, "I do not have my books with me. I had no idea what to expect from detention with you here. I-I heard rumours of detention with Snape and I…" She trailed off, looking terrified at her father. His shoulders rose and fell as he breathed in deeply.
"Accio potion book," he mumbled. An old and battered version of Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger flew out from his chambers, landing gracefully on the table in front of her. It was his old book, which he had planned to give her in order to save money, but Minerva had given her a 'welcome to Hogwarts' gift containing new books for the third year. Daisy had been excited as the best gift she could receive, apart from chocolate, was books.
She mumbled a silent 'thank you' and started writing her essay.
Shrinking Solution; also knowns as Shrinking Potion, a potion that causes the drinker to shrink to a smaller form. Poisonous if brewed in incorrectly, but otherwise rather useful. It is supposed to be an acid green colour and contain the following ingredients:
Minced daisy roots, peeled Shrivelfig, sliced caterpillars, one rat spleen, a dash of leech juice, a splash of cowbane and wormwood.
There is two ways to brew the potion. The Zygmunt Budge's recipe or the way the current Potion Master does it….
Remus watched as his daughter was concentrated on her schoolwork. She had her nose buried so far into the book and parchment that she had gotten ink smeared on her cheek. His smile grew wider as he thought back to his days at Hogwarts, doing exactly the same thing. James Potter used to call him Professor when they were studying together. If only he could see him now, Remus let out a breath and snapped out of his thoughts.
He began to grade assignments from the second year students. The rest of detention flew by in silence and both Lupin's were in their own worlds.
