AN: Attention! This is a double update! Since chapters 4 and 5 were more on the smaller side, and I won't be able to post for a while, I decided to upload both at the same time.
Harper had trouble sleeping every night since Rory's birthday. She kept asking Rory how many 'sleeps' until Daddy was home, and no amount of stories would put her to sleep. Rory had caved in and when they got back home to New York she let Harper sleep with her the remaining nights. The day was finally here, Logan had texted her when he had landed, and they talked over the final arrangements for the next day. Of course, Harper had woken up extra early, but Rory had convinced her to rest her eyes for a little bit more because Daddy was resting so he had all the energy to play with her. She got her daughter back to sleep but she couldn't get back to sleep herself. Since she knew Logan was going for an early run, she texted him letting him know she was up, and that Harper had already woken up once and would probably not reach her usual 7 am wake-up time.
Logan texted her back that he was done with his morning run and he could come by right away so that he was there when Harper woke up. Rory agreed and asked him to add an extra coffee to his order. Once he arrived at Rory's apartment, he texted her instead of ringing the doorbell so he wouldn't wake up their daughter. Rory went to wait by her front door while he took the elevator ride.
"Morning. Still messing up the time zones?" Rory smiled and let Logan through the door. He went directly to her kitchen island to set everything down.
"Broke my watch and threw it in the Hudson. Or was it the Thames? Either way, the rest of this week's going to be a mess." He took one of the coffee cups from the cardboard holder and handed it out to her. "Here, with an extra shot of… wait, what was it?"
Rory laughed at the reference. "Cynicism. But that's my mom. Coffee is love, coffee is life. No cynicism. Only insomnia because of your daughter." Rory pulled her coffee cup with both hands to her chest and inhaled the scent.
They weren't okay, but they were getting there. They found themselves at times acting like friends, just as they started so many years ago. Taking digs at each other and making their little banter games.
"She hasn't been sleeping well? Or just not wanting to go to bed? Did it start as soon as I left?"
"No, it was okay at first, but then we went to Starts Hollow and my mom decided to have a movie night with a two-year-old." Rory rolled her eyes. "Anything past 8:30 and my night is ruined. And then you talked to her on my birthday and it was 'three sleeps' and then 'two', and she never got to re-regulate her sleep schedule anyway after we came back, thanks, mom! But it's okay, she's taking longer naps at school."
"Is this a good time to revisit the sleepover topic? Do you think she's ready?" Logan sounded and looked hopeful waiting for Rory's reply.
"Maybe, I think leaving her to fall asleep at Honor's will be a good test, you know. Let's see how that goes." Rory took a few sips of her hot drink and she could tell that Logan was expecting a clear yes. He had gotten himself busy taking the breakfast treats he had brought out of their bags. "I was thinking… about the sleepover?"
Logan raised his head and looked at Rory waiting for her to continue.
"I thought the sleepover should be… Uhm, with all of us? Not all of us together but… I don't want her to wake up and feel disoriented, you know? We can do it here or at your place if you prefer. I have a guest room; you have a guest room. I won't interfere with anything, I promise. I can even go out while you put her to bed. I just want to be there in case she asks for me. She never slept a night without me…"
"That's not a bad idea." Logan totally understood Rory's reasoning. He was, after all, little more than a stranger to the little girl, no amount of Rory's stories about him would get back those lost years. Harper was at ease with him, she clearly was familiar with him and loved him, but they had known each other for around a month only. He knew Rory didn't doubt his capabilities, but he was also afraid of something happening with Harper that he wasn't able to deal with, he didn't want to have her in distress, more than the situation already did. "If you don't mind, I'd like to have it at my place. The guest room is on another floor, so it gives us some space, you don't even have to be out when I put her to bed."
Before Rory could answer the little blond toddler tornado was jumping on Logan's lap yelling 'Daddy!' on repeat. The three of them were smiling and laughing as Harper kept yelling 'Daddy!' and hugging him repeatedly. That all stopped as soon as Harper saw the box of cupcakes. Her eyes were shining, and she reached her hand to try to get to the box on the island.
"Wait, first you have to eat some yogurt and fruit, okay Ace?"
"Okay, Daddy." Logan put Harper on her highchair and put some slices of apple and the yogurt carton with a spoon in front of her. He sat down in one of the bar stools and passed the croissant box to Rory while he was also eating a yogurt.
"We'll talk about it later?" He asked Rory between bites.
"Yeah. Later"
