It was a good day. The first of your store being open was going great, you had plenty of people coming in and looking around and customers buying books, bookmarks and even a few of the small book-related items you had on sale, like miniature swords or pieces of jewellery straight of some book series. You had plenty of compliments on your store, people seemed to love the aesthetic you'd created, similar to a cottage in a dark forest, complete with plants, vines and even fairy lights. Everybody who stopped by loved the store and said they'd definitely come back to visit with more people, yes it was a good day, a great day.
It was almost time to close the store and head out for dinner soon, you were packing a few books away for a customer when you saw a puff of silver hair walk through the door. You excitedly waved goodbye to the customer as Kakashi came to a stop in front of the desk and you turned to smile at home, happy he came to check out your store just like you promised he would.
"This place looks great Y/N," he said looking around the store, admiring all your hard work. "I'm glad you like it, this is what I always imagined it'd look like. It's such a comforting space, in my opinion anyway." You replied, also admiring your work. You'd put a lot of effort into this store and to you it was perfect.
"Yeah, it is," Kakashi said smiling at you. "I don't suppose you have the next book in that series on hand do you, he said as he slid the book you'd lent him the other week over the countertop. "Oh," you said holding up a hand as if to say, wait here, and ran up the stairs behind you and soon returned with your own copy on the book and handed it to him. "Oh, you not gonna make me pay?"
"Your the Hokage," you said, bringing a hand up to rub the back of your neck, "and this means you gotta come see me again." You said under your breath.
You and Kakashi fell into easy conversation, just as you did as children, you chatted to each other, sharing opinions on the books, Kakashi asking questions you refused to answer as to not spoil anything. You spoke as you closed the store for the night, Kakashi occasionally offering help but you wouldn't let him. As you locked the door Kakashi asked if you'd had dinner, you said no and you both went for ramen once again, once you finished eating Kakashi walked with you back home as your apartment is on the way to his. He said his goodnights as you closed your door waving to him and he set off back home for the night.
After you showered and get into bed you later there thinking back through the day. It was a good day.
You hadn't expected so many people on the first day, not that you were complaining, you just hadn't realised so many people in this village actually had a love of books. Your conversation with Kakashi had also been a surprise, it reminded you of the years you spent growing up with him. You two had always been close before and you greatly missed the bond of friendship you once shared with the silver-haired shinobi. He looked so much better, healthier and happier, you were glad he made the effort to reach out to you. You'd done so many times through the years but you got no response from him so eventually, you stopped trying, you wish you hadn't but when it came down to it there was nothing you could've done for him, not in the state you were in, are in.
You were happy to see his old self come back into the light and were excited to get to know the man he's become.
You were in a particularly good mood today, you had even more people in and out of the store and it was only midday.
Your mood jumped to new heights as a certain former Anbu walked through the door with a bad in hand.
"Thought you might be hungry," he said placing the bag on the counter, "I can't stay too long otherwise I'll have Tsunade on my back, but I wanted to see you." You smiled brightly at him, gesturing with your arm for him to come behind the counter, "smells good."
As Kakashi rounded the counter another person approached. "Excuse me, sorry but could you help me find this book? It's called Crescent City?"
"Of course I know exactly where that is just follow me," you replied, stepping around Kakashi and leading the young girl toward the fantasy section to where you knew the book was. "Oh thank you so much, you even have the hardback, I'd love to get this one."
"Of course," you said leading her back to the counter and telling her the price. After the woman had left you turned to Kakashi feeling his gaze on you. He was leaning on the counter with his chin resting in his hand smiling up at you. You raised an eyebrow at him as if to say 'what are you looking at.
"Your so different in here, you're so comfortable in here. I mean you were always pretty mean, to be honest, most of the Anbu were afraid of you but watching you know that just seems odd."
"Would you prefer me to be harsh and cold Kakashi," you teased, tossing him a crooked smirk and leaning down on the counter next to him.
"Woah Woah I didn't say that," he chuckled as he stood up and pulled the bag toward himself and pulling out two boxes, passing one to you he said, "you still like chicken burgers right?"
"Oooo, sure do," you replied taking the box from him and finding a chicken burger from your favourite take out shop inside. You took and bite and practically moaned, it'd been some time since you last had one of these.
"Thaaank yoou Kakashi," you said mouth still half full, smiling brightly at the man. He chuckled at you and pulled out his own food and started eating. The two of you chatted for a while, pausing occasionally as you served customers and answered questions, but it seemed you'd both lost track of time as eventually a certain angry kunoichi barged through the door and stomped toward the counter.
"Y/N, had that idiot Hokage been in here?" You couldn't see her physically restraining herself from shouting in anger. You glanced to your left only to find... not Kakashi.
"Uh, no Lady Tsunade I haven't seen him since yesterday." You answered, as innocently as you could, Anbu training coming in handy. You followed the woman's eyes as she scanned the countertop.
"So you are all this food," you said gesturing to the empty containers on the counter, "by yourself?" She finished, raising an eyebrow at you. She let out an exhausted sigh.
"Kakashi!" You started, "you have five minutes to get back behind your desk or I will match back in here and drag you there by the ear." She said not breaking eye contact with you as she did so. With one last huff, she turned away and left.
You heard and a nervous chuckle from beside you and looked down to find Kakashi on the ground behind the counter, hiding from Tsunade. You giggled, drawing his attention and his expression softened as he looked up at you.
"Maybe you should go," you said, stifling your laughter. "Haha," he said standing up and rubbing the back of his neck, "maybe." He stood there staring at you for a minute before you pushed him backward with your hand on his chest.
"Go," you laughed, "I won't have an angry sanin in here damaging my store." He laughed back at you and turned for the door.
"Bye Kakashi," you waved. "Bye Y/N, I'll see you tomorrow." He said leaving you there alone and excited.
Tomorrow. He was coming back tomorrow
