"Jaune, what do you think is the most important thing in Duel Monsters?"
"Uh... Deck building?"
"Wrong! Try again Jaune!"
"Having rare and powerful cards?"
"Nope! I'll give you one last try!"
"Luck?"
"Bzzzt wrong! It's called the Heart of the Cards Jaune. I want you to remember it."
"Heart of the Cards? I'm not gonna lie, that sounds extremely cheesy uncle J."
"C-Cheesy!?"
Part 1
Year Later , Duelist Kingdom, Gekko's Castle, Night Time...
I Jaune Arc, am normally not a superstitious person. But the vibe that this place was giving is very unsettling. I felt like there were eyes looking at me through the shadows.
"Of all the places, why did I pick this place to rest for the night?"
I muttered to myself as I surveyed my surroundings.
The area that I was in was a dense forest that was far from the castle. My reasoning for that was because I didn't want to duel anyone at night. Hence why I chose an area far from the center of the island.
"I'm regretting my life choices right now."
I muttered to myself as I shrugged my shoulders.
"Oh well... It's too late to complain now. Time to go to-"
BOOM!
What the heck was that?
Part 2
Duelist Kingdom, Gekko's Castle...
"Sir, the Gatekeeper's have eliminated a total of 9 duelists in a single hour."
I couldn't help but smile when I heard that from my assistant. Gatekeepers, they duelist tasked to weed out the weaklings from my tournament, they allowed to take all of the Star Chips from the opponents that they defeat. On the other hand, tournament participants win 2 Star Chips if the gatekeeper.
"That's good."
I then turned towards my assistant and asked him for some more details.
"Tell me, who are the closest ones to our gatekeepers."
My assistant takes out his scroll and begins to look up what I asked of him. It took him about 3 to 4 minutes or so, give or take.
"Sir, Jaune Arc and Sun Wukong are the closest one."
My mood brightens when I heard the names of those two.
"Jaune Arc and Sun Wukong? Which are gatekeeper are they the closest too respectively."
I asked with a bit of excitement in my voice.
"Jaune Arc is near Panik, whilst Sun Wukong is close to Arkana."
PaniK and Arkana huh? Both PaniK and Arkana dueled Yugi Muto in the past. PaniK duel during the first Duelist Kingdom whilst Arkana dueled him in the first Battle City. They are both powerful in their own right. PaniK uses a high level Fiend Deck while Arkana uses a deck that is centered around Dark Magician. I couldn't help but get excited about this.
"Good. When their respective duels start, make sure to put the security cameras on them. I wan to watch their duels."
"Understood sir."
Part 3
With Jaune...
"I'm huge idiot for doing this."
I was currently making my way towards the explosion that I heard. Normally I wouldn't do this, not because I'm a coward, I'm normally don't go to the danger because I'm smart. Hence why I called myself an idiot because I'm going to danger. Man... Curiosity got the better of me.
"Alright, I'm getting close."
The smell of burnt flesh got closer as I made my way towards my destination. I got a bad feeling about this.
"U-Ugh..."
It seems my worries were warranted. On the ground was guy who was wearing a burnt t-shirt. He had blue eyes and long dark blue hair. It looked lol ke he was hit by bomb.
"Shit..."
I immediately rushed towards the guy to ask him what happened.
"Dude, who did this to you?"
The looked at me with blue eyes and said.
"R-Run..."
Run? Something terrible is happening here, I could feel it.
"Well well well... It seems that I'm really lucky today."
A deep rasphy voice said through the darkness of the forest.
"W-Who's there!"
I asked with a panicked voice. First of all I wasn't panicking because I was scared, I was panicking because I was excited! Yeah let's go with that! I was panicking because I was excited! Hahahaha... You don't believe me do you? Whatever, I need to focus on the elephant in the room.
"A-Answer me! W-Who's there!"
I asked once more, but this time I was pointing towards the direction of the voice. A foolish decisions on my part.
RATTLE!
"Huh?"
CLANK!
I looked at my arm dumbly as an iron chain suddenly shot out from the darkness and attached itself to it. You could probably guess what happened next.
RATTLE!
"Oh shiIIIT!"
The chain retracted bringing me along with it!
"Damn it!"
I was suddenly flying through the air for a couple of seconds before I found myself situation on a Dueling Arena's platform. That's one way to challenge to a duel. My right arm was currently attached to Duel Arena's platform without a way of escaping it.
"This is bad..."
"Oh yes it is kid!"
I turned my head towards the other side of the Duel Arena, and my eyes widened once I saw who my opponent was going to be.
"You're PaniK! Why aren't you in jail?!"
PaniK he was infamous underground duelist back in the day. His way of dueling was pretty brutal and he always leaves his opponents injured after a confrontation. There were also sent me rumors that state that he has kill a few in past.
"Why is person like you here?!"
"Hehe..."
PaniK laughs then starts to answer my question.
"Simple, it's my job to be here."
"Your job?"
"Yes, I'm a gatekeeper for this tournament. My job is to weed out the weaklings."
This tournament is officially insane in my book.
"What about your prison sentence?"
"This is my prison sentence."
"What do you mean that?"
I was confused by what he said. This is his prison sentence? How does that work?
PaniK grins and reveals his rotten teeth to me.
"You see, I'm also in this tournament. Gatekeepers must collect 100 Star Chips, and if they able to do so, well. You probably already know thay answer to that one."
Yeah, collect a 100 and he's out of this island.
"What are going to do once you're free again?"
PaniK grins maniacally and explain what he was going to do.
"I'm going to go back to underground dueling! I'm to enjoy breaking my opponents once I return!"
I don't understand his reasoning.
"Why though? What's the point? You'd probably be sent back here once again if you do that?"
"Heh... I knew you wouldn't understand. To me, inflicting pain onto is the greatest thrill!"
He was correct. I didn't understand. Maybe something happened in his past that made him this way, or maybe he was born like this to begin was with. But..
There isnone thing that I do know. And that is I'm definitely not letting that guy get his wish. Scum like this man shouldn't be allowed back to civilization.
"I see, let's duel then."
Is what I stated whilst I used my free hand to set my deck
"Hoh? You're not backing down?"
I nodded. I'm not letting this guy free. I'll defeat him and make sure that he doesn't leave this place.
"Yeah, I hate scumbags like you."
"Ah, I see... We have a wannabe hero here?"
A wannabe hero? Well I did want to be a hero in past. Oh well, it's time to get ready for our duel.
Part 4
Somewhere in the Caves of Duelist Kingdom...
"O c'mon... I picked this place specifically so that I don't have to deal with this type of crap."
Hello there, my name is Sun Wukong, and currently my ankle was chained to a Duel Arena's platform. Now you might be asking yourself, why is poor old Sun in this predicament? Well to put it simply... I was tricked into this... Yeah... It's really embarrassing how I ended up like this.
"So... Mr. Arkana? Why exactly are my legs locked up like this?"
The masked man on the other side of the Dueling Arena was Arkana. That's all I know about him... Were you expecting more information about him? Sorry, but I don't really the guy.
"You're not afraid of me boy?"
The masked man asked me. Huh? Was I supposed to be afraid of him?
"Sorry but I don't really know you?"
Arkana frowns when I told him that.
"Fine. Maybe this card will cause you fear."
Arkana looks through his deck then picks a card from it.
"Hah! Look at this card in my hand! The ultimate spellcaster! The Legendary Dark Magician!"
Dark Magician? A card that was used by a rival of my father. Interesting... I couldn't help laugh when I saw it.
"Hahaha! This is great!"
Arkana eyes widened when he witnessed my reaction.
"Why aren't you showing signs of fear?! I have the same card as Yugi Muto?! The current King of Duels!?"
"What a dumb question! I'm a duelist! A legendary card like that only makes me more excited!"
Arkana couldn't help but back off slightly at my proclamation.
"W-What's wrong with this kid?"
Arkana mutters to himself. The man couldn't help but think that he fucked himself over.
Part 5
With Jaune...
The forest was eerily silent as me and PaniK shuffled our deck. Also the tension between us was so thick that you could probably cut it with a knife.
"I'll go first."
I told PaniK who in response just grins and nods.
"Alright right then."
PaniK and I glared at each other before saying...
"Duel!"
"Duel!"

Alright, let's see how strong this PaniK guy is.
"I'll Normal Summon Knight of Landstar in ATK position."

A tiny armored knight with a blue cape appeared onto my field. His weapon of choice were 2 lances that he held in his hands.
"Huh?"
I was confused. Why didn't my monster gain an ATK/DEF boost? I placed him in a Sogen area on the Dueling Field. Weird something's up with this field. Welp, there's no point in worrying for now.
"I'll set 2 cards then end my turn."
I'll play definsively for the time being.
Jaune's Hand: 2 cards
PaniK's Turn
"My turn draw!"
PaniK's LPs: 2000
PaniK's Hand: 6 cards
PaniK grins at the card's in his hand and starts to laugh.
"Gahahah! I'll Normal Summon Beast of Talwar in ATK position!"
(Beast of Talwar/DARK/Level 6/Fiend/Normal/ATK 2400/DEF 2150)
A green-skinned demon manifested from the darkness and appeared onto my opponent's side of the field. But that wasn't what surprised.
Beast of Talwar ATK/DEF: 2400/2150 to 2600 to 2350
The body of the Beast of Talwar began disappear from the field. It was as if the demon was turning invisible.
"What the heck is happening?"
I asked in confusion. The demon body was tranparent with some parts of it completely invisible.
"Gehehe! We are currently using the Yami Field in our duel! It turns my Fiend-Type monsters invisible to my opponent! It also increases it's ATK/DEF by 200!"
That's why Knight of Landstar didn't get an ATK/DEF boost! The Yami Field overwrote the rest of field entirely. What rotten luck.
"Now Beast of Talwar attack his puny monster! Demonic Sword Dance!"
Invisible?! No focus Jaune! You need to find where that monster that monster's hiding.
"Keep your guard up Knight of Landstar!"
My monster nodded at my order and raised it shield.
"Focus Jaune..."
It felt like forever as I waited for my opponent's monster. But as soon a I began to lower my guard, the demon suddenly appeared behind my monster a raised it's weapon for an attack.
"Finish off that weak monster!"
I'm not going to let it do that.
"I'll activate one of my set cards! The Continues Trap, Fairy Box!"
"Huh?!"
A box with multiple above it appeared onto my field, and as soon as it materialized, it absorbed my monster into it.
"What kind of stupid trick is this?!"
PaniK asked in a annoyed manner.
"Fairy Box allows me to toss a coin, and if I call it correctly, and I call it correctly I stop the attack! I'll call heads!"
I holographic projection of a coin appeared before me PaniK. It flipped up to the air, before landed on heads.
"Yes heads! Beast of Talwar is stopped!"
CLANG!
The green-skinned demon tried to slice my monster into pieces but missed entirely. The monster's blade instead hits the Fairy Box.
"Damn it!"
BAM!
PaniK exclaimed as he slammed his fist on her a duel platform.
"Fine I'll end my turn! You got lucky brat!"
As soon as PaniK ended his turn, his monster, Beast of Talwar disappeared into the darkness once again.
PaniK's Hand: 5 cards

"My turn draw!"
Jaune's LPs: 2000
Jaune's Hand: 3 cards
"During the Standby Phase, I'll need pay 500 LP due to the effects of Fairy Box."
Jaune's LPs: 2000 to 1500
"Kch."
As soon as finish paying the cost to Fairy Box, I looked at the cards on the field and on my hand, I began to plan out my turn. Do I play defensively or offensively? Going on the offensive will allow me to reveal the secrets of the Yami Field, but it will leave me open to a counter attack. On the other hand, going on the defensive will keep safe for a couple turns, but it will allow PaniK increase his field presence... Choices, choices... Screw it, I'm going on the offensive!
"I'll Normal Summon Henewata in ATK position!"
(Hanewata/LIGHT/Level 1/Fairy/Tuner - Effect/ATK 200/DEF 300)
A small creature with angel wings and peach-colored fur descended from the heavens right next to Knight of Landstar. It looked ready to prove itself but..
Hanewata ATK/DEF: 200/300 to 0/100
"Huh?!"
My monster's face turned into a frown as darkness entered its body. It became weaker due to that.
"Gehehe! Fairy monsters are weakened in the Yami Field."
I see. I thought that it was something worse. Luckily for me, Hanewata is currently the only Fairy monsters in my deck. Plus, Henewata isn't going last long on this field anyway.
"Now I'll tune my level 1 tuner Hanewata with my level 3 non-tuner Knight of Landstar!"
I raised my right hand up to the air and began to chant.
"O warrior that escaped from the depths of the underworld! Unleash thy power and bring ruthless justice! Synchro Summon! Level 4! Underworld Fighter Balmung!"
(Underworld Fighter Balmung/DARK/Level 4/Warrior/Synchro - Effect/ATK 2100/DEF 800)
A knight with dark colored armored manifested onto my field. His weapon of choice a massive broadsword that was the size of his body.
"2100 ATK?! Gahahaha! That's not enough to deal wity my monsters 2600 ATK!"
"Are you sure about that?"
"Huh?!"
I grinned then pointee towards my other set card.
"I'll activate my Equip Spell, Lightning Blade!"
A blade with an electrical charge appeared in front of Balmung. The Synchro Monster then picks up the sword with his empty hand, which in turn increase his ATK power.
Underworld Fighter Balmung ATK: 2100 to 2900
"2900 ATK!?"
"Now Underworld Fighter Balmung, attack Beast of Talwar! Demonic Lightning Cross Slash!"
Balmung, with swords in both hands, charge towards PaniK's monster. But the as soon as my monster was near the Beast of Talwar, said monster disappeared and the attack failed to connect.
Slash!
"What?!"
I asked as I looked around the field for PaniK's monster.
"Where did the Beast go!?"
"Gehaha! Did you forget already?! Yami Field makes my Fiend-Type monsters invisible, meaning that it prevents them from being targeted by attacks or card effects!"
So that's what he meant by turning Fiend-Type monsters invisible... Damn that's one annoying Field. This guy really has an overwhelming advantage here.
"Fine, I'll end my turn."
Jaune's Hand: 2 cards
PaniK's Turn
"Draw!"
PaniK's LPs: 2000
PaniK's Hand: 6 cards
As soon as PaniK drew his card, he grins then points towards my Continues Trap.
"It's the Standby Phase and you know what that means."
"I know."
Yep, Fairy Box's cost. It's in both players Standby Phase.
Jaune's LPs: 1500 to 1000
PaniK grins as LPs went down once again.
"Gahaha! You're probably regret activating Fairy Box now right?"
Well yeah... But I'm not telling him that.
"Don't worry, I'll take care of Fairy Box for you!"
"Oh? How exactly?"
I asked with genuine curiosity.
"This! I'll Normal Summon Reaper of the Cards in ATK position!"
(Reaper of the Cards/DARK/Level 5/Fiend/Effect/ATK 1800/DEF 2000)
A dark figure that is wielding a scythe appeared right next to the green demon in PaniK's field. A sudden chill appeared behind my back when I saw that monster.
Reaper of the Cards ATK/DEF: 1800/2000 to 2000/2200
"Now Reaper of the Cards! Attack!"
"Balmung has a higher ATK than Reaper! What's the point in attacking my monster?!"
"Who said I was attacking Balmung?"
Huh? What does he mean by that?
"Heh! Surprise brat! I'm going to attack your Fairy Box instead!"
"What?!"
The scythe wielder became a shadow and rush towards the Fairy Box. And as soon as it reached it, the massive scythe that it was weilding came down and destroyed the Fairy Box.
SLICE!
BOOM!
Damn! That was a powerful attack.
"Now end my Battle Phase and activate the Ritual Spell, Zeta Ritual!"
PaniK tributes both the level 5 Barox and the level 3 Dark Artist in his hand.
"Oozing darkness! The azure tyrant! Conquer, dismantle, and break everything! Ritual Summon! Level 8! Zera the Mant!"
(Zera the Mant/DARK/Level 8/Fiend/Ritual/ATK 2800/DEF 2300)
A demon with blue-colored skin appeared onto PaniK's side of the field. He was steadily increasing his field presence. I'm lucky that the Duelist Kingdom ruleset only allows one attack per turn.
Zera the Mant ATK/DEF: 2800/2300 to 3000/2500
"After I'll end my turn."
PaniK's Hand: 2 cards

"My turn draw!"

This is annoying... I can't do anything to my opponent... I can't target his monster for attacks and monster effects. Am I going to lose to this guy?
"No..."
There has to be a way! Think Jaune think!
"Wait... That's it... That could work."
"What are mumbling over there?!"
I decided to ignore PaniK's question and continue on with my turn.
"I'll switch Underworld Fighter Balmung into DEF position."
Underworld Fighter Balmung:ATK 2900 to DEF 800
The swordsman from the underworld changed to more defensive stance.
"Then I'll Summon Queen's Knight in DEF position."
(Queen's Knight/LIGHT/Level 4/Warrior/Normal/ATK 1500/DEF 1600)
A blonde female knight with red-colored armor appeared right next to Balmung. She was also in a defensive stance like the swordsman from the underworld.
"Then finally I'll set a card then end my turn."
This will do for now.

"Draw!"

As soon as PaniK's eyes saw the card he drew, he started to laugh maniacally.
"Gehaha! I just drew my strongest monster! Creeping darkness that sucks the life of all! Manifest and bring darkness upon all! I summon you! Load of Darkness!"
(Load of Darkness/DARK/Level 10/Fiend/Effect/ATK 3000/DEF 1000)
A large eldritch horror manifest behind all of his other monster. I felt a slight when I stared at it.
Lad of Darkness ATK/DEF:
3000/1000 to 3200/1200
"Now Load of Darkness attack his Queen's Knight!"
My eyes widened at my opponents order. Huh? He's not going attack Balmung?
"You seems surprised brat... I already know what the 'Musketeers of Face Cards' are! I not going to let you activate their effects!"
I was hoping that he didn't know their effects...
"Now continue with your attack Load of Darkness! Absolute Darkness!"
The massive eldritch horror uleashed a powerful beam made out of concentrated darkness, onto my Queen's Knight.
"Kyaah!"
BOOM!
My Queen's Knight didn't stand a chance.
"Tch! What power!"
I'm surprised that PaniK possessed a monster like this.
"The effect of Load of Darkness will activate!"
Wait..! It has an effect!?
"When Load of Darkness destroys a monster, it will inflict 700 damage to my opponents!"
Suddenly Load of Darkness shot me with a beam of concentrated darkness, like what it did with Queen's Knight.
ZAP!
"Gah!"
Jaune's LPs: 1000 to 300
Gods that beam attack hurts.
"I'll end my turn! Gehaha! Your turn brat!"
PaniK's Hand: 2 cards
Jaune's Turn
In the past my uncle told me that the most important thing to a duelist is called the Heart of the Card. I didn't believe him back when he said that to me, heck I still don't believe him. But I'm literally out of options right now.
"Let's see if I could do it."
I closed my eyes and visualized that card that I needed. If this doesn't work, my journey through Duelists Kingdom will end unceremoniously.
"Card draw!"
Jaune's LPs: 300
Jaune's Hand: 2 cards
"..."
Everything became silent for a moment.
The air became heavy and it felt like I was going to vomit due to my nerves. But I persevered and steeled myself. I looked at card that I drew and my eyes widened in shock.
"H..."
My body trembled. Not because of fear, but of excitement.
"Hehehahaha! This so perfect!"
My uncle wasn't kidding about the Heart of the Cards. I know for a fact that this wasn't luck, I can't prove it, but take me for my word.
"What are laughing at brat?!"
I gave PaniK my trademark Arc family grin and said.
"It's my win! I activate my set card, Back to the Front to revive the Queen's Knight in my graveyard!"
A appeared right next to Balmung, who was still in DEF position. And out came from the portal was Queen's Knight. The crimson knightess was once again on my side of the field in DEF position. She looked ready to exact her vengeance upon my enemy.
"Don't tell me!!"
PaniK knew what was about to happen.
"After thay I'll Normal Summon the card that I just drew! King's Knight!"
(King's Knight/LIGHT/Level 4/Warrior/Effect/ATK 1600/DEF 1400)
This time, a knight with gold colored armor appeared right next to my Queen's Knight.
"When King's Knight is summoned while I control a Queen's Knight, I can Special Summon Jack's Knight from my deck! Appear Jack's Knight!"
(Jack's Knight/LIGHT/Level 4/Warrior/Normal/ATK 1800/DEF 1200)
The last of the 3 face cards appeared onto my field. The most powerful of the 3, clad in azure armor, Jack's Knight.
"So you have all of them know... What are going to do with you monsters? XYZ, Fusion, or maybe a Link Summon?"
I grinned at PaniK and shook my head.
"None of those! I'll activate the Spell Card, Royal Straight!"
PaniK's eyes widened in fear as he realizes what was about to happen.
"Royal Straight tributes my Queen's, King's, and Jack's Knight to Special Summon a powerful monster from my deck!"
Cards began to fall from the sky, and when they landed one 3 knights, afterwards their bodies started to become one.
"King, Queen, Jack! These 3 cards that determine victory shall converge and form a new being! Appear! Royal Straight Slasher!"
(Royal Straight Slasher/LIGHT/Level 6/Warrior/Effect/ATK 2400/DEF 1350)
As the three finished merging, a masked knight with emerald-colored armor appeared in their place. He was taller than the three previous knights by large margin and was exuding an aura of power.
"No this can't be happening! All my progress will be gone in an instant!"
PaniK's exclaimed... well in panic.
"Now I'll activate Royal Straight Slasher's effect! By sending 1 monster from each levels 1 through 5 from my deck to my graveyard, I can destroy all cards that my opponent controls!"
"No this has to be a dream!"
"Nope, this is reality! I'll send my level 1 Motivating Captain, level 2 Key Man the Key Warrior, level 3 Swordsman of Landstar, level 4 Big Shield Gardna, and finally level 5 Curse of Dragonfire!"
The masked knight charged his sword and was waiting for my order.
"Go! Royal Straight Slasher! Ultimate Five Crush!"
The knight followed mt orders and unleashed a powerful slash that destroyed all the monsters on my opponents side of the field.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The power of the explosion knocked PaniK off of his platform.
"Guaaaah!"
PaniK's LPs: 2000 to 0

Part 6
Gekko's Castle...
Impressive... PaniK's deck is specifically made of Duelist Kingdom and the Yami Field. I'm truly impress with your skills Jaune Arc.
"Sir, Sky Lark along with 12 others have been escorted off the island."
"I really couldn't care less."
I told my attendant as I turned towards the other screen. Sun Wukong's duel was still going on and I wanted to know what was going to happen.
