Hello! So the first part of this chapter is the beginning of Season 3 Episode 4, but the rest is my own. I thought the episode was kind of boring and decided to not put it in this story, but it still happened. Harper just wasn't there.
Anyway, hope you like this chapter!
It was entertaining to watch Davenport sing and dance as he led us through a tunnel into the newly built lab.
"I got a new lab, I got a new lab. I got a new lab." Bree chose to rain on his parade.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. I think you mean, we got a new lab." She corrected.
"Excuse me. Did we pay to rebuild it?"
"Do you sleep in a glass box?" She retorted. Davenport thought for a second then started singing a new tune.
"We got a new lab, we got a new lab." After everyone did a little happy dance - minus me of course- the doors to the lab slid open and we walked in. "And here it is." I have to admit, my jaw dropped as I took in everything. It was much larger than the former lab and definitely an upgrade.
"Guys, look at all these upgrades." Chase gushed, "Mr. Davenport, this place is amazing."
"Of course it is. I designed it." Leo cleared his throat. "Fine. We designed it. We, we!" Davenport walked over to the three capsules, "Upgraded capsules, bam! Quantum processing supercomputer, bam! Four-dimensional combat simulator, bam! This, my friends, is what a multi-million dollar makeover looks like." I couldn't stop myself from going over to one of the new supercomputers and Chase followed. I hid my annoyance over this.
"Is there a mini fridge?" Adam asked.
"No."
"I bet our real dad's lab has a mini fridge." Bree was looking around for something.
"Hey, Leo, where's your work station?" She asked. He smiled and motioned for us to follow him.
"This way, children." He tapped his tablet screen and one of the hexagonal shaped tiles slid down and then came up with Leo's workstation.
"The floor in the lab is compartmentalized, meaning we can store things in it. May I?" Davenport motioned for him to go for it, "Bam!" Chase gasped loudly beside me.
"Is that a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer?" He asked, rushing over to said thing. His hands hovered around it as he made excited noises, "Ahh! I've never seen one in person before. It's so beautiful." I internally laughed while watching Chase. He looked like a kid in a candy store and it was adorable. Wait, no. Don't think like that, you don't like him.
"Should we leave you two alone?" Adam asked him. Chase looked at us and blushed while backing away from the spectrometer.
"Davenport, how did you afford all this?" I asked.
"Well, I used some of the money from the jet wing stunt, but the rest of it I got from a huge government contract I just signed. I am developing a rocket system to protect the earth from rogue asteroids. Thanks to this little baby, I'm on my way back up rich man Mountain, and, whoo, the air smells better up here! Oh, wait, there's one more thing I forgot to show you."
"Mini fridge?"
"There's no mini fridge." Mr. Davenport exclaimed angrily through gritted teeth.
"But there is me!" My heart sank as I heard a familiar voice I had hoped was gone forever. We all turned to a screen on the wall where the voice came from. "Hello, friends, and I use the term friends loosely because you're not my friends, and I hate you."
"Did you really have to bring Eddie back?" Bree asked.
"Yeah, I don't know that I'm okay with that."
"Me either." I muttered, agreeing with Chase.
"Well, then you definitely won't be okay with this." Suddenly Chase disappeared from my side because Eddy made him fall into one of the compartments underneath the lab. "Bam!"
"Bring him back up or I'll send you back to the computer grave." I told the annoying emoticon.
"Ooh, I'm so scared." I generated lightning in my right hand and held it in his direction in a threatening manner. "Fine." Only when Chase was safely back in the lab did the lightning go away. I jumped when my shoulder was touched and it was Donny.
"And Harper, I have a little surprise for you too." I looked at Davenport with confusion. What could he possibly have as a surprise for me?
"Oh! Can I show her?" Chase asked excitedly and Donny nodded. "Come here!" Chase grabbed my wrist and dragged me over to the new supercomputer closest to the capsules. He pressed a few buttons and a box appeared that Chase had me put my palm flat down on. "Now, this scans your hand and…" I did my best to ignore the fact that Chase's hand was still over mine as the screen scanned my palm. Once the scan finished my head jerked in the direction of the capsules when I heard a whirring noise. The floor next to the far right capsule slid away and a fourth capsule rose to replace it. "...voila! Your very own capsule!" I stepped away from the computer and my mouth was wide open in shock. I looked at Davenport then back at the capsule, repeating this two more times before I pointed to it and found my voice.
"You built me a capsule of my own?" I asked. My voice was calm despite the rush of emotions I was feeling.
"It was my idea." I looked at Chase as he came over, looking nervous. "You like it?"
No I don't! That's what I wanted to shout. They might as well have put up a banner that said "Hey, you're bionic and there's nothing you can do about it!". But of course, I couldn't let myself hurt Chase's feelings.
"What's not to like?" I said instead, hoping I sounded happier than I actually was. I looked at the capsule once again. "I mean it's… a capsule and it's mine. What else could a girl want?" To sell the idea that I liked it I even went inside to get a better look. Chase followed me in and didn't seem to be bothered by the fact we were squished together.
"Oh, and check this out. If you double tap this panel," Chase did and a list came up and he pressed the first one and suddenly music started playing. "Bam! You can listen to music while you're in here!"
"Wow. That's a nice feature." I commented while nodding with approval. I suppose it will make it more easier to stay in here.
"I thought you might like it."
"How come hers is hidden?" Bree asked when we came back out.
"Well I thought since she's not here everyday, it'd be better to have it stored underneath so we can still have the space when it's not being used." Davenport explained and we all nodded, agreeing with this.
"You know, you didn't have to build me my own capsule."
"Well, Chase thought it'd be a good idea and I agreed. Plus, if you start going on missions, it'll be faster for you to get into your mission suit with your own capsule." This got everyone's attention.
"Wait, you're going on missions?" Bree asked
"Uh, I said I'd think about it." I reminded Davenport, not liking the fact that he went ahead and saying this in front of everybody, " And I'm still thinking."
"It would be awesome if you came on missions!" Bree exclaimed, ignoring what I said. Feeling uncomfortable with being put on the spot, I decided to leave.
"Yeah well, like I said, I'm still thinking about it. Well, congrats on the new lab guys. I have to get going, but I'll see you at school tomorrow." Despite the concerned looks I got, I hurried out of the lab.
I ended up running into Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo on the way to school the following day and we walked the rest of the way together.
"How come you didn't answer my text last night?" Bree asked me as we got closer to the front doors.
"Uh, I went to bed early." I lied and she seemed to buy it. We all turned to watch as a car sped around the parking lot. We had to walk the outskirts of the parking lot to avoid being hit.
"That jerk has been doing doughnuts in the school parking lot all morning." Bree said.
"I know. Finally, a good reason to come to school." I took out my phone when it vibrated and wasn't paying attention to my surroundings.
"Guys, look out!" Chase suddenly cried out and I was grabbed by the waist and pulled onto the sidewalk barely in enough time before the car hit us. I watched, stunned as the car screeched to a halt a few feet in front of us, knocking over a trashcan in the process. Chase asked if I was OK and I turned my head to tell him I was but froze when our faces were inches apart. I think he was stunned too from how close we were and I don't know if the pounding I heard was my heart or his.
I was the one to regain my senses and pulled away from him, putting a good five feet between us. I focused on Perry, who turned out to be the reckless driver.
"What's up?" She greeted after getting out of the car.
"What are you doing?" Bree asked her.
"Pushin' the envelope on this little baby's rollover specs." Perry replied, and even with superintelligence I had no idea what she just said.
"How did you afford this?"
"Your daddy gave me my first payment for keeping your little bionic secret. So naturally, I went out and bought my dream car, a barrel of pudding, and a lifetime supply of kitty litter. The fancy kind that clumps!"
"I think we have different definitions of fancy." I told her while circling the car and nodding with approval. "But I have to admit, I kind of wish I asked for more than five hundred bucks when I found out."
"Well, I am smarter than you." I raised an eyebrow while scoffing.
"Oh really? For your information, I happen to be a genius…" Perry had her back turned to the others, who's eyes widened at the same time mine did when I realized my mistake. "...about certain things." I finished quickly.
"Like what?" She challenged and I wanted to disappear right this second. I clicked my tongue while thinking of what to say that would get me out of this.
"Like knowing when to end a conversation before I say something stupid. But, you've made me realize I'm not, so congratulations." I was saved by the bell and didn't hesitate to leave the group and mentally scold myself for my slip up.
Despite my best efforts to avoid any of my, what I guess I should call my friends (I still haven't gotten used to the fact I have friends), Chase managed to track me down at lunch when I was in the library using one of the school laptops to do some research.
When he said my name I jumped and quickly shut my laptop before looking up at him. "Don't sneak up on me like that!" I exclaimed and I got shushed by the librarian.
"What are you doing on the laptop?" He asked curiously while sitting in the chair next to mine.
"Nothing." He gave me a look, "Nothing I want to talk about." I told him in defiance, hoping my attitude would scare him off. I had tried researching Krane but so far found nothing.
"Are you doing ok?" I scoffed just loud enough for him to hear.
"What kind of question is that?" Chase shrugged.
"You've been, I don't know, reserved since we escaped Douglas's place."
"Reserved?"
"Yeah, you're kind of acting like the old Harper and we were making a lot of progress with you trusting and everything. Mr. Davenport and you worked things out right?"
"If by working out you mean I was told I'd blow up if my chip was removed then yeah, we're totally OK." I said sarcastically.
"It's not his fault."
"I know." I replied, and he looked at me, surprised.
"You do?" I nodded, becoming more irritated with each passing moment he was here, "Then, what's really bothering you?"
"Do I really have to explain myself to you? I don't think I'm obligated to tell you every little thing that's going on in my life, I'm not your girlfriend or anything." His eyes widened, making me regret what I just said.
"Woah girlfriend, where did that come from?" I waved a hand dismissively while looking away so he didn't see my red face.
"Nothing. Forget I said that, I don't know why I did." Chase didn't leave, but was silent for a few beats that felt like a lifetime.
"If we were dating, I wouldn't expect you to tell me everything. I'd at least hope you'd talk to me if something was bothering you."
"Good to know, I'll keep that for future reference." I said, still refusing to look at him. Please just go away.
"What are we even talking about?"
"You tell me." Chase let out a long sigh and it made me look at him finally. His expression was one of disappointment.
"I don't like it when we argue." He admitted, and I instantly felt guilty for being so stubborn but it needed to be done, "I'd hoped we had moved past that." I bit my lip while letting out a sigh of my own.
"We have." I told him, willing to acknowledge that. "I'm just stressed and don't feel like talking about it." I looked at him, "Can you just respect that?" Chase looked like he wanted to argue, but he must have realized he wouldn't get any further with me and nodded reluctantly.
"Yeah. But I'm here when you're ready to." I shifted in my seat uncomfortably, fighting an internal battle with myself over what I wanted to do next.
"Yeah, sure. Ok." After saying this, I did the unexpected. I threw my arms around his neck and pulled him into a hug. The last time we did was after my panic attack, and I loved and hated how nice it felt once his arms were around my waist and he held me tight like I did to him. I never wanted to let go, but the bell rang, signaling that lunch and our moment was over.
We broke apart and got lost in each other's eyes for a second, but like earlier I snapped out of it first and my guard went up again. I pointed to the door with my thumb.
"We should..."
"Yeah. I'll see you later." I kept a small smile on my face until we were out in the hall and parted ways. It dropped the second I turned to go to Art Class. I don't even bother to go get the things I need.
There was a lump in my throat as I walked and I kept my head down so no one could see the downhearted look I wore as I made a decision. I gave Chase that hug and he didn't know the meaning of it. I did it as a way of saying goodbye to him. I couldn't let my feelings go any further. This friendship we developed was too dangerous for me, and him. I was going to shut it down before things got any more complicated than it already was.
I don't know if he had any feelings for me, most likely he didn't. I mean, who am I compared to the other girls in this school- they're prettier and more pleasant to be around than boring old me.
I reached art class and went to the very back row. I've never felt so broken like I do right now. That's how bad of an effect Chase had on me. The reality of what I just did hit me like a ton of bricks. I held it together, I don't need bionics to help with that. It's something I've been good at my whole life.
But I couldn't stop one tear from traveling down my face and falling onto the desk as the bell rang a second time and class begun.
