Logan was sitting in his office going over the minutes from the briefing about the training. His lips started curving upwards at the thought of Rory and his conversation at the end. She was too cute, thinking Logan wouldn't be able to figure out her excuse for wanting to come up to him. And all that nervousness and squirming, he couldn't help himself at goading her more.
Logan realized it was time for one of his many meetings for the day. His hand reached towards the coffee mug at his table to power up for the long day ahead. As he started sipping his coffee, Logan thought of how much Rory liked her coffee. An idea popped into his mind.
He heard a knock at his door. "Mr. Huntzberger, are you ready for your next meeting?" Liza, his secretary asked.
"Yes, just a second. Logan finished his coffee. As he was getting up from his chair, he asked his secretary. "Liza, how long have you worked here at the New York Times?
"I have been here for 10 years. Before being assigned your secretary I was Mr. Smith's secretary." Liza said mentally backtracking her steps to check if she did anything wrong and if she was going to get fired.
"So, I assume you know much about the amenities we give to our employees here?" Logan said.
Yes, sir, I would like to think so." Liza replied.
"Well, in that case. How would you rate our coffee?
"Excuse me, sir?" Liza asked confused.
"How good you think the coffee in the break room is?"
Umm, I would say not very good." Liza said wondering if she should have lied and said very good. Was this a test of loyalty?
"Okay," Logan said taking out his phone and showing Liza a photo.
"I want you to get this coffeemaker for the feature department's lounge and put it on my card". Logan said walking out the door and then added "Also, order Ospina coffee beans."
"Should I put the coffee beans in the same department's lounge as well sir?" Liza asked scribbling in her notepad, walking along with Logan.
Logan thought for a second. "No, leave them on my desk."
The next day Rory woke up to 4 voicemails from her mother. Rory assumed her mother must be calling her to complain about attending today's Friday night dinner alone. Rory thought she didn't need this first thing in the morning and decided to hear them on her way to the office.
Rory came out of the shower carrying her pink blouse and black skirt. This was the next best outfit she owned after wearing the first one on Wednesday. She could call her mom. Lorelai always could mix and match and create the best outfits. But if she called her for help. She would have to listen firsthand about all the ways, Rory was abandoning her at the Friday Night diners. Leaving Lorelai to fend for herself among the vultures.
Rory paused for a second from her mental freak out. Why was she so bothered with how she looked when she ran into Logan. She had promised herself that she wouldn't go there again. And even if she wanted to go there, it wasn't as if he was available anyway. Rory closed her eyes and tried to manage the pain she felt at the thought of Logan and someone else. This co-existing peacefully things with Logan in the office was proving to be a lot more difficult than she had assumed.
Rory thought of wearing her pants and white shirt to the office that she usually wore. But she couldn't help but want to look attractive if she were to run into Logan at the office. Before she wasted any more time deliberating on this important dilemma, of to look good or to not care about how she looked. She picked up her phone and called her mother.
"What have I done to you, for you to leave me alone with them for 3 Friday night dinners consecutively? Do you not love your mommy? Do you not want her to stay sane? Do you want to spend your weekends visiting your mommy in an insane asylum?" Lorelai said in one breath.
"Luke would say, you already live in an insane asylum," Rory said smiling at her mother's antics.
"Well Luke, is not subjected to every Friday night diner, so he doesn't know crazy."
"He lives with you, mom. Trust me he knows crazy." Rory said. She was happy that Lorelai and Luke were finally in a good place. Her mother deserved to be happy and Luke was a great guy. She was glad that they both found their happiness with each other.
"I would agree to that. But Rory, I can't believe you are ditching me again this week. I haven't seen you in 2 weeks. And you haven't come to Stars Hallow in 2 months now. I miss you, my loin fruit." Lorelai said.
Rory rolled her eyes at loin fruit "I miss you too mom. I can't come this Friday and I have some errands to run on Saturday. I'll try coming next Friday and then maybe I can spend the weekend at Stars Hallow?" Rory finished sitting down on her bed.
"That sounds good kid." Lorelai said, getting happy at the prospects of spending time with her daughter soon.
"Well mom, I called you for some advice." Rory said hesitantly.
"Oh okay. Sure. What's going on?" Lorelai asked., it had been a while since Rory came to Lorelai for any advice.
"We have this important meeting today and I read somewhere that if you look your best. You feel more confident. I was kind of hoping you could help me in that department." Rory lied hoping her mother wouldn't catch on.
"Meeting huh?" Lorelai said not believing her.
"Yes, I was thinking if I should wear my pink blouse and black skirt?" Rory said picking up the blouse and pacing around her room.
"Do you have that cream pencil skirt we bought together when we went shopping before you joined the times?
"Yes." Rory said, making her way to the dresser.
"Wear that with the blouse and your white heels". Lorelai said.
"Oh well, thanks, mom." Rory said happily bringing out the cream skirt. "Okay mom, I have to get going before I get late for work".
"Okay, kid. And Rory, you know you can talk to me about anything right. I know we haven't talked much since you finished college. But I am here if you need me." Lorelai said, hoping her daughter didn't forget this.
"Yes, mom I know." Rory said trying to finish up the conversation and not wanting to talk more about this.
Rory and her mom, were as thick as glue when Rory was growing up. After Rory started the Obama trial, she was extremely busy and couldn't keep up the long hours her mother wanted from her over the phone calls. And after Rory decided to not be a foreign correspondent, she could feel her mother's disappointment every time she went to Stars Hollow. It weighed heavy down on her.
"Why are they all standing there like that?" Rory asked Tara, coffee mug in her hand looking at a group of her co-worker standing covering the coffee maker.
"It seems like they are looking at a Greek god, isn't it? They can't tear their eyes off of it." Tara said smiling from a desk outside the lounge, drinking coffee. She was the only one around the lounge except the others standing hovering over the coffee maker inside.
"What is it?" Rory asked getting worried if the coffee maker was fried again.
"It seems like they think if they stop looking at it, it may grow legs and walk away." Tara smiled as she looked at the group again and then at Rory.
"Tara, what is it?"
Tara pulled Rory from her arm and dragged her inside the lounge.
Rory's eyes widened at what she saw ahead of her. Rory couldn't peel her eyes from it.
"Knew you would act just be like them. If not worse." Tara said rolling her eyes.
Rory was stunned at what she saw there. She expected there to be a lot of things but not what she saw. She assumed what her coworkers were looking at, but this was none of those. Maybe some unaccounted intimae clothes from someone's late-night activities, the addition of 65inch Television, a basketball hoop. She even expected an appearance of a body part, but not this.
Rory blinked multiple times to see if she was seeing Illy X1the coffee maker at the place of their old coffee maker. The old Coffee maker would break down multiple times in a month. When she joined the New York Times, her only complaint, in the beginning, was not the gruesome hours of work pressure but that the coffee marker broke down almost every week and was being repaired more days than it was making coffee. She had resigned to the fact that on those days she had to walk down the street and get her caffeine intake from a nearby coffee shop. She couldn't go there every few hours leaving work, only once. And if she tried to bring more than one cup, the other cups would be lukewarm and average at its best. So she wasn't getting the caffeine intake she wanted those days.
The coffee marker in front of her was the real deal. Rory read about it and knew it was awarded the best coffee marker in Europe. It used a 4-level filtration system that used a double stainless-steel screen filter and a spring-loaded base plate that gives a good brew without any coffee grinds. Rory was practically salivating looking at the coffee maker.
"Rory, can you stop looking at it like you want to fuck it?" Tara said amused at Rory's expression.
Rory was brought out of her trance. "How did it get here?"
"I am not sure, but I think it coincides with someone else's arrival in the office. Someone else who knows, how much you worship coffee." Tara said trying to control her laughter at Rory's expressions.
Logan
Her skin tingled. Why did Logan do this?
"Maybe, Matthew got it for the department." Rory said, trying to find another reason for the coffeemaker's unexpected appearance.
"Does it seem like something Matthew would do?" Tara asked Rory raising a brow.
"Why he did do this?" Rory asked herself softly.
"Do you want me to psychoanalyze it or lie?" Tara asked Rory in a hushed tone, not wanting to draw attention to their conversation.
"At this point, I think I'll take Lying." Rory said not wanting to read too much into the situation.
"He is a great boss and wants all his employees to be well-caffeinated." Tara said bringing her mug to her lips.
Rory went to her office and turned on her computer to add finishing touches to her article before submitting it. Rory was taking out some of her research articles from the desk drawer when she saw the coffee beans.
Her heart skipped a beat. This was Logan. Whatever doubt she had about Logan's involvement in the appearance of the coffee marker, left at the sight of these coffee beans. Logan knew how much she liked coffee. Whenever Logan was abroad during their relationship, he was always getting her local blends when he came home. It was one of his ways to show her that he missed her on his trip.
She picked up the coffee beans and the note attached to them.
''Addiction is very hard to understand unless you are there and have experienced it.''
'Hope you love the coffee.
-L'
Rory felt a pit in her stomach and sank lower in her chair. Which addiction was Logan referring to? Her addiction to coffee? or her addiction to him?
Or his addiction to her?
Rory spent the rest of the day working on her article, getting up for a cup of coffee every few hours. She was going to make the most of the new addition to the lounge and her coffee beans. She finished her article early and left her office high on caffeine. Rory was on her way to Matthew's office.
Rory asked Mathew's assistant if she could go in.
"Hello Mathew, I have forwarded you my article. Is it fine or do you need me to change anything? Rory asked from the door.
Mathew looked up from his computer. "Rory, please take a seat. I was wondering when you would come in."
Rory took the chair opposite Mathew nervously. "Is everything okay? If you think it's not good enough, I can edit it. Or if you think it was horrible. I can scrap it and write all over again. It would take me a long time but I think I'll make it before Sunday." Rory rambled worried her article was sub-par.
Mathew chuckled. "No no, your article was pretty good actually. It's was some of your best work, even though I assumed this week's article might not be." Mathew said appreciatively.
"Thank you." Rory said trying to smile but wondered if the article was fine then why was Mathew acting strange.
"This is about something else actually." Mathew said uncomfortably.
So, that is what this is about.
"I know you have some history with the Logan Huntzberger. He is my boss, your boss. Hell, he is everyone's boss in the building. If things were to be anything less than cordial between you two, it would put me in an uncomfortable spot and I do not want that Rory. As my sub-ordinate I want to do right by you, but if things were to turn sour between you two, I don't know how much help I can be when it is related to my boss. I hope you understand that." Mathew said.
"I understand sir. I will not it affect my performance." Rory said. No matter where Logan and Rory stood in life. She knew Logan would never do anything that would make her life miserable. She knew he wouldn't hold their past against her at work. Personally sure, but never professionally. He knew how much this meant to her.
"There is also a case of office gossip if your situation were to get out of hand. I know we don't have any policies against office dating but having been involved with the top management can cause some tongues to run." Mathew said concerned.
"I know how..." Rory paused trying to find the right words "unconventional the situation is."
"Good, that's all I wanted to say. Enjoy your weekend." Mathew finished and turned around to continue the work he was doing before Rory stopped by.
Rory left Mathew's office and was at the elevator with her things to leave the building for the day. She found her thoughts being drawn to the coffee maker, Logan's note, and Logan and her situation at the office.
She also felt the need to thank Logan for the coffee maker and the beans but she didn't know where his office was. Rory turned around to see if she saw someone from whom she could take this information, without raising suspicions.
"Well, look who finished early today." Kevin said coming to stand beside Rory and casually draping his arm on her shoulder. Brian followed and stood at Kevin's side, in front of the elevator.
Kevin had a habit of casually draping his arm around Rory. And every time she would get out from under his arm immediately, he still wouldn't take the hint.
"Rory, leaving work early today? Well, your early and our on time." Brian asked giving Rory a friendly smile.
"Now, we can go to the bar together." Kevin said stoked at the idea of spending the night with Rory. He was glad that it was finally Friday night. He had been wishing for the Friday to come as soon as possible ever since their fight in Cafeteria. Rory had been ignoring him ever since and he was hoping to change that today. He was also hoping, they could make it up today. In more ways than one.
"I don't know guys. I think I'll just head home today." Rory said getting out from under Kevin's arm.
"Don't say that Rory. You never miss the Friday night drinks, none of us do." Kevin said not liking the idea. If Rory backed out today, he would have to spend another week not being able to talk to her.
"I am just really tired today." Rory lied.
"With all that caffeine? Rory I swear, I saw you go in at least 5 times today for coffee." Brian making fun of his friend's coffee habit.
Rory laughed. She liked her office friends. She didn't want to sleep with Kevin today, she didn't know why but the thought made her puke in her mouth a little. Which was weird because that didn't happen even when she actually slept with him. But she wanted to hang out with her friends from her office and she wasn't mandated by law to sleep with Kevin every Friday. She could say no to him.
"A girl has to make the most of it. I'll go with you guys but only because I can't resist Tara beating your ass dancing after getting drunk Brian".
"Mean." Brian said feigning hurt.
The Elevator door dinged and the three of them got inside.
A/N- I would just like to say, what a waste of a good outfit. LOL.
