Summary: Sam and Daniel begin to wonder – just how smart is the colonel? Is Jack the genius known only as MacGyver?
Disclaimer: I do not own "Stargate SG-1" the series. I believe it is owned by MGM. No copyright infringement is intended. I do not "MacGyver" (original or remake) and am not sure who does. No disrespect is intended I am merely intrigued by the possibilities.

Chapter 5

"Daniel, are you worried about this?" Sam Carter questioned as she stepped into her teammate's cluttered office.
"Hmmm," Daniel's response telling Sam that he'd heard her but wasn't listening.
"Daniel?" Sam raised her voice and poked him gently in the shoulder to try to catch his attention.
Daniel looked up from the paper piled on his work counter to see who'd poked him, and upon seeing Sam blinked several times to refocus onto her.
"Morning, Sam! Did you have a good weekend?" Daniel turned to face her and away from his work so he wouldn't be tempted back to it during their conversation.
"Not really," Sam replied with a small shake of her head, "I was too distracted to work but too agitated to relax. What about you?"
"Oh, I spent most of it here," he waved a hand toward the pile that he'd been working on, "SG-7 brought these documents back from the negotiations on P4G-987 – I've been trying to make heads or tails of them…they are similar to the Nordic runes from earth and from the Asgard – but they don't translate into anything that makes sense so I'm currently working on the assumption that this may be a form of the language that is more modern than the Nordic runes but older than the modern Asgard that we've encountered previously."
Sam's attention was caught, "how did SG-7 get them?"
"Apparently they were a gift from the natives when SG-7 showed interest – they were just considered an oddity by the scholars there – but I definitely think they actually say something I'm just not sure what. Yet." Daniel started to reach for them again but caught himself and asked, "Was there something you needed, Sam?"
"I just stopped by to see if you were worried about today…" Sam rephrased her first question quickly while she still had most of her friend's attention.
"No. I mean, I don't think so…I mean is something happening today? What have I forgotten?"
"Its's Monday."
"That I actually hadn't forgotten…so?"
"We have a Senior Staff Meeting this morning."
"Yes, the same as every other Monday morning. Sam, are you feeling alright?"
"I'm fine. Why aren't you worried about this? Even if you were able to concentrate on work this weekend – and I'm jealous about that by the way – surely you haven't managed to completely push it from your mind!"
"What? Sam? You're not making sense. Push what from my mind?"
"The Senior Staff Meeting this morning!"
Daniel's eyes crossed and uncrossed, "you're repeating yourself."
"Daniel, really – how are you so calm about this?"
"Calm about what?"
Sam opened her mouth but Daniel continued before she got passed the first syllable, "and don't say the meeting. What, specifically, about this meeting do you think I need to be worried about?"
"The Colonel comes back from leave this morning," Sam offered.
"Yes. … Oh, you mean about Friday?"
"Yes! Daniel how are we going to face him knowing what we know? All those degrees?!"
"I doubt it'll be a problem. I mean General Hammond won't tell him he showed us the file – so Jack won't know anything is different."
"But I'll know he's so well educated – how am I supposed to talk to him?"
"The same as always," Daniel shrugged, "you have always known he had some education to be a senior officer, but you didn't know any details and you still don't. So, at a basic level nothing has changed."
"I guess…Daniel do you think the Colonel would be angry if he knew we'd seen his file?"
Daniel's brow furrowed as he looked into the middle distance, "probably. Jack is an intensely private person. Especially if General Hammond is right and Jack redacted his own file."
Sam nodded with a weary air, "but why wouldn't he want people to know how smart he is? At least his team and commanding officer?"
"I don't know. But," Daniel cautioned, "he must have a good reason."
"But…but…but," Sam sputtered looking for an acceptable way to phrase her objection.
"But nothing Sam. You've always trusted Jack as the leader of SG-1 and he has proved to both of us hundreds, maybe thousands, of times over the years that the trust is well placed."
Sam nodded, but still didn't look completely convinced.
"We just have to trust that if Jack made a choice, he had a good reason for it. Jack is a good, simple man – even knowing he has secrets – I still know that, with Jack, what we see is what we get."
Sam and Daniel each nodded as if to affirm his words.
"The meeting will be starting soon – we better go," Sam offered in capitulation of Daniel's point. After all he was right – the Colonel was the same person he'd always been – that would never change.
Author's Note: I know it has been a terribly long time since I have posted anything. But things seem to have turned a corner here. I have finished this story and will be posting a chapter every day or two until it is all up. There will be 26 chapters in total. Thank you for sticking around and for taking the time to read!
