Chapter 5:

Her mother had a No-Maj disease, that magic could not cure. Alzheimer's Disease with rapid decline, her father had told her that when her mother had gotten pneumonia it had gotten much worse. He explained that she had been in a treatment program for a few years now. They had not wanted to scare their daughter and made the decision not to tell her. All those years her mom had been mean to her, had been from a disease, nothing more. Feeling guilty that she had hated her mom for all the wrong reasons. Not understanding at the time, that it was not controllable.

Apparently after Katie had left for Hogwarts after Christmas, things had taken a turn for the worst. Having to be hospitalized, and then soon being sent to a care facility. Katie found herself sitting next to her mother, watching her as she slept. Her dad was talking to one of the doctors in the hallway while Katie waited.

Mrs. Bells eyes fluttered open, and her pupils dilated as she adjusted to the light. When she spotted Katie, she was silent for a few moments before sneering at her "Oh look my biggest disappointment in life is here on my death bed." Her voice was cold and carried no emotion to it whatsoever. Stunned, Katie could do nothing but stare back at her mother, her body frozen. "I've despised you since the moment you slithered out of me like a parasite."

Katie's lip started to quiver, tears welling up in her eyes. "I could have saved myself 33 years of misery if I had listened to my mother and aborted you."

Katie choked out a sob, tears streaming down her face. "Mom, you don't know what you're talking about" Katie cried harder. This couldn't be her mother, there was no way. Sure, her mom said cruel stuff to her in the past like, but nothing to this extreme.

Katie's mom cackled "You're not pretty enough to be that stupid. Why do you think I haven't written you? I treasure all the time not spent with you, the stain of our family. You're nothing but a disgrace." Katie's mothers voice was raising with every insult. The EKG monitor attached to her mother beeped faster and faster. "I hate you. I HATE YOU. I HATE YOU!" Her mother was screaming at the top of her lungs. The doctor rushed in behind her father, running to her mother's side. In those moments, all Katie could do was sit there and watch.

"She's crashing" the doctor screamed out. Nurses rushed into the room, pulling Katie and her father out. Mrs. Bell would be pronounced dead about a half an hour later, after all attempts to resuscitate her failed. The doctor came out of the room and spoke with her father. He fell to his knees crying, and that's when Katie felt the guilt.

Mr. Bell spent the next couple days arranging the funeral, Katie had not once left her room. She did not attend her mother's funeral; the guilt was too much for her. Her dad had done the best he could, to reassure his daughter that it was not her mother in that room that day. She had become someone else, but it didn't make the things she said any better.

Her friends had sent her tons of letters of their amazing summer breaks. When Katie told them what had happened, they did their best to console her and even tried inviting her over. Oliver did his best as well and even owled her some flowers which brightened up a small corner of her room for a week.

Katie tried to move on, feeling numb to the pain after a while. She hadn't cried since the day at the hospital. Katie knew it wasn't a good idea to ignore the grief, but she didn't know how else to handle it.

The summer ended and Mr. Bell told her that she would still be attending Hogwarts. As he had forgotten to fill out the transfer paperwork, having been used to his wife handling the paperwork. He had been struggling to just keep their house afloat, working twice the normal hours to make up for the pay loss. He would not receive any death benefits for at least a few more months, waiting for paperwork to be finished. Which unfortunately meant that Katie had not participated in the summer quidditch camp like she had wanted.

Katie found herself standing outside the train station the day before school began. When her friends spotted her, they ran as fast as they could forgetting their trunks behind them. Latching onto the blonde girl and hugging for what seemed like an eternity.

Finding an empty compartment, they sat together, and Katie vented. After a while she began crying, with all the emotions of seeing her friends again and her mom. Not even her friends where able to console her. "It hurts. It hurts so bad, just please make it stop." Katie continued to cry burying her face in her hands. "I meant nothing to her, she didn't love me."

"Oh, honey you know that's not true" Alicia whispered rubbing her back in small circles. Not knowing what to do in the situation, she tried her best.

"All I ever did was disappoint her" She cried harder her body shaking as she struggled to breathe between the tears. "I can't go on like this, it just doesn't stop hurting." Angelina sat there silently unsure of what to say. They took turns rubbing Katie's back and trying to get her to calm down. "I'm so tired of feeling like this."

Angelina placed her hand under Katie's chin and made her look up. "You are a tough bitch, and you will get through this."

Later that night Katie had hardly touched her dinner, Oliver was doing his best to cheer her up. Really showing her how much he cared about her, along with holding her hand throughout dinner. Alicia was sitting on the other side of Katie and whispered to her "How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine, thanks." Knowing it didn't sound convincing enough she added "I'm feeling better, thanks Alicia" satisfied with the response she joined the rest of the table's conversation about quidditch being canceled for the season. The Triwizard Tournament was this year. Katie felt disappointed, the reason she even came to Hogwarts was for quidditch.

"Tomorrow morning before breakfast, would you like to go flying with me?" Oliver asked sensing her disappointment. Katie accepted nodding her head doing her best to attempt a credible smile. Her group went silent after George and Fred told them to look in a certain direction. A pop sound could be heard and suddenly an older Slytherin boys drink exploded. The goblet was undamaged, but the drink shot up from the cup splashing pumpkin juice all over the boy's face. The twins high fived each other under the table proud of their new experiment. It was weird, Katie was surrounded by people along with her closest friends. Yet she felt utterly alone.

Needing air but not wanting her friends to worry. She excused herself and made her way out of The Great Hall, heading towards her common room. All Katie wanted was to be alone, she had only been with her friends for a few hours at most, yet it felt draining. It took her so much effort to stop crying on the train. Knowing they wanted to help her but not understanding what it was like made it worse. Not feeling like they could relate to her situation.

There was an empty feeling in her chest. Her eyes started to well up, and Katie knew she would start crying any moment. Sniffling she did her best to keep walking the rest of the way. When she felt her throat start to choke up, she paused, knowing she would not make it in time. Sobbing she held onto a wall for support. Hearing footsteps approaching her she dashed into an empty classroom locking it behind her and slid to the ground with her back to the wall. Her body heaving with each sob.

The footsteps stopped in front of the door, and the doorknob jiggled a bit. "Princess, open the door." She continued to cry, knowing who it was and choosing not to respond. Hoping he would get the hint and leave her alone. "At least move out of the way so I can kick it down." Then again, he wasn't one to take a hint.

Fearing he would bust it down, Katie fiddled with the lock from where she was sitting. When it was unlocked, the door opened, and she kept her eyes down. Shutting it behind him, he crouched down in front of her, arms draped over his knees. "Princess what's wrong" he kept his distance from her, but still staying within a few feet of her. Green eyes scanning her over, a look of concern on his face.

"Don't pretend to care" She cried out. "Why are you even here, I don't need you."

She pulled her legs to her chest burying her face in her arms, her body heaving shaking. She didn't need another person to feel sorry for her. Poor Katie Bell, mommy didn't love you. "Well, I'm all you got for the moment." Trying his best, to get her to confide in him.

"I feel like I can't breathe" She struggled to take a breath before continuing on "She died, my mom. She died"

Marcus sat down in front of her and pulled her to his chest. "Shh it's okay" He whispered in her ear. She tried her best to push him away, but his left arm held her firmly around her waist while his right rubbed her back, tucking her head underneath his chin. "My mum died when I was ten. I'm so sorry."

"No one gets it. I'm not okay. I feel like I'm going to die, every time I think about the fact, I'll never see her again." She sobbed harder, finally wrapping her arms around his neck. Finally, someone understood.

"One of the hardest things about life is living it" Marcus replied pressing his face into her hair.

"She was just lying there and then she was suddenly just a body. Magic couldn't even save her" her body was lightly shaking now, with her right hand, she clutched Marcus shirt tightly.

"It was her time to go" he mumbled into her hair.

"The worst part is, I'm happy she's gone. Her disease made her so cruel" she pressed her face into his neck shielding her eyes from the light of the room. "How do you do it?"

"Do what blondie?" He questioned, repositioning his hands so one held her to him, while the other stroked her hair softly.

"Act like you don't feel anything. I've tried and I just can't do it." Her sobbing lessened a bit as she struggled to continue "I feel everything, and I just want to turn it off."

"Years of practice" Trying to make light of the situation.

"It just hurts so bad." He continued to stroke her hair as she calmed down.

They sat there for a while, him just holding her, she broke the silence after a while "I thought you didn't care about anyone but yourself?"

"Maybe I just needed reminding that I could."

Katie felt like her life was crashing around her, here she was in the arms of someone she loathed. Yet he was saying all the things she needed to hear. He understood what she was going through, he had lost his mother as well. Was that why he was so emotionless around people? Would the same thing happen to her? Maybe it was easier to not let anyone in, then you wouldn't have to face the disappointment.

Eventually she settled down to lightly sniffling, and he continued to hold her. It wasn't long before she fell asleep in his arms. Wondering why he was being so nice to her.

Marcus sat there and watched her sleep unsure of what to do. It was past curfew by now and he had a sleeping girl in his arms. Doing his best not to disturb her, he untangled their arms and pulled his body from under her. Opening the classroom door, he picked her up bridal style, carrying her out of the room. She was mumbling in her sleep as he quietly walked down the corridors. Eventually standing outside the Gryffindor common room, unsure of what to do next. The lady on the portrait refused to help him and had even left the portrait entirely when he called her a fat cow.

He knocked on the common room door hoping for the best. Behind the door he heard footsteps and soon came face to face with an anxious Alicia. While Angelina was perched on the couch, head peaking over. "What did you do to her Flint" she hissed at him in a low whisper.

He ignored her and walked past her, heading to an empty couch. Marcus knew he couldn't bring her to her bed because the stairs were enchanted to turn into a slide, if a boy tried to go into the girl's dorm. So, he set Katie down gently onto the couch before making his way out of the room. Not uttering a word to her friends, he slid off into the night. The two girls sharing confused looks between each other.

The following morning Katie found herself confused. On a couch, she didn't remember falling asleep on. Alicia and Angelina were sitting across from her whispering to each other. Spotting Katie sitting up, Alicia ran over and hugged her. "Please don't scare us like that again. We searched everywhere for you."

"What happened?" Katie's voice was hoarse as she tried to recall the night before.

"Flint carried you up here last night after curfew, so you tell us" Angelina had replied with a slightly judgmental tone.

The night came flooding back to her and she covered her face in her hands. Before mumbling "I locked myself in an empty classroom, I just needed some time to myself" she explained and then continued to ramble. She gave them a brief explanation about Marcus finding her, not going into many details. Alicia making sure to share her concerns about her confiding in Marcus.

"How are you feeling now?" Alicia asked her concerned.

"Well, my back hurts from the couch, but I'm feeling fine." Katie wasn't sure who she was trying to convince herself or them. It was still early morning; the other kids wouldn't be waking up for a while. They talked more about the tri wizard tournament, and the new exchange students. "Katie, I hope you know you had me really worried over the summer, when you didn't message me for weeks." Angelina said.

"Huh?" unsure of what she was talking about. "I messaged you guys every other day."

"Yeah, in the beginning of the summer, at the end of it, I hardly heard from you" Alicia said.

"I have no idea, what you're talking about, maybe my owl wasn't sending them?" Katie was confused. Or maybe days had past by without her realizing it? It was probably the grief she was going through with her mom, just making her forgetful. Or could it be something else entirely, could she have inherited it from her mother? "Honestly, my head hasn't been right, ever since I found out what happened to my mom. Not to be dramatic but do you think I'm losing my memories like she did?"

"Oh, honey no, you're going to be fine. That's not going to happen to you, its just all the stress you are going through." Alicia reassured her. "Hey, I know you are supposed to leave in a bit to go early flying with Oliver but why don't you head to bed and I'll let him know you needed a bit more sleep."

"Thank you" Katie nodded her head and padded her way upstairs to their room to get some shut eye.

When she was out of the room Angelina hissed at Alicia "Something is not right."

"It's just grief Alicia."

Weeks went by and soon it was Halloween weekend, Katie had snuck out and met Angelina and Alicia in Hogsmeade. After shopping for a while Katie told her friends she was going to go speak with her uncle.

Katie was curious about the journal he had given her and had asked him about it. "Your mother would have wanted you to have it" He had told her. Katie was surprised when her uncle told her, that not even he had been able to open it. She was spending a lot of time in the library now a days looking up every spell she could find. Often discovering herself waking up at one of the tables in the back of the library.

One incident Katie had been heading to her dorm room. She had zoned out so much that when she came out of the daze her friends were waving their hands in her face, trying to get her attention. Katie apologized and said she was tired heading up the stairs to their room.

"I think someone has been using memory modifying charms on her" Alicia whispered to Angelina. "It started happening after she met her uncle."

"Do you think it's him? How can we get more information?" Angelina questioned.

"Ask another pureblooded family." Alicia needed to ask around, but it had to be discreet. Katie could not know they were going behind her back and trying to dig dirt up on her uncle. Over the next couple days, they had asked all the pureblooded Gryffindor, Hufflepuff's and Ravenclaw's, coming up empty.

Not knowing what else to do, Alicia sighed. "I think we need to ask Flint."

"Why would we ask him, he hates her right?" Angelina was confused.

"I don't think he does, I think he has feelings for her. I mean we're mean to the people we care about. Look at the way you treated George before you guys became official" Alicia noticed a lot about the people around her, always having been very observant.

"That's fucked up" Angelina was stunned realizing the truth in the statement. They ran down to the pitch hoping to find Flint. He was their last hope. Finally finding him chatting with Terrence Higgs the girls approached him. "Flint we need to speak with you." Angelina asked him blatantly staring at Terrence hoping he'd get the hint "Alone."

"They want you in their knickers" Terrence elbowed Marcus laughing.

Not amused he crossed his arms over his chest and looked at Terrence. "Leave us" Terrence looked shocked for a moment before looking between the two girls scowling, then walking off. When they were alone the girls continued.

"We need your help" Alicia questioned.

"You're mistaking me for someone who care" Shrugging his shoulders.

"We need information, and it's really important" She pressed the issue.

"You expect me to do this out of the evilness in my heart?" Marcus raised an eyebrow, waiting for them to continue.

"It's about Katie, we think she's in trouble." She kept her voice low so no one could pick up their conversation. Knowing she would have to explain why they needed information before she could ask for it. If she was right, then that meant that Marcus Flint did have feelings for Katie. He would have to help them then, and if not, it could possibly spell disaster for Katie. "We think her Uncle has been putting a memory modifying charm on her, or worse. She's been losing memories about events that happen, and we've found her in an almost trance like state every once and a while. We need to know more information about Theodore Bell. He works at Spintwitches and he was in Azkaban for 12 years, that's all we know about him."

Marcus was surprisingly patient as he listened to the story "You think this guy is an Obliviator? "

"That's why we need more information" Alicia wasn't backing down; they needed his help. He had more connections, then either of them.

"First you need to figure out if it was a memory charm or and Obliviating spell. You can't undo Obliviate spell without destroying the persons mind." Clenching his fists.

"Angelina and I can work on that part, but we need help with the other part."

"You understand what you're asking me to do?" Marcus said while clenching his jaw. "First you need to find out if it's a simple charm, if it isn't then I'll do my best. I'm assuming she doesn't know." He raised his eyebrow already knowing the response.

"No, we didn't tell her" Angelina replied. Marcus walked off leaving the girls gaping at each other. "Do you think that was a bad idea?"

"Probably"

By the next morning, they knew it was not a simple charm. They had no other choice but to find Marcus and let him know they needed to move forward with their plan. He knew what he had to do, but like most things it came at a price.
