Chapter 5: Hurt
Nessie's POV
"There you are!" Bella shouted when I finally returned to the hotel. "Where have you been?"
"I could ask you the same question. When I woke up you were gone," I responded.
"I went to check on my father and see how he was doing. He has a new family now and he seems to be okay. Then I went to the house that the Cullens have out here," she said. "So where did you go?"
"I went exploring in the woods. Some of the things I saw were quite fascinating. I didn't know wolves could get so big,"
"You saw wolves?" she asked curiously.
"Just one. He was big with reddish brown fur. Magnificent animal,"
"Jacob," she gasped.
"What? That creature has a name?"
"Of course he has a name. He was my best friend," Bella said. I could hear excitement in her voice. "I've missed him,"
"A wolf was your best friend?"
"He's a werewolf,"
My eyes nearly bulged out of my head. "A what?"
"He's a werewolf. I know that it's a hard to believe but werewolves are real and so are vampires-"
"Really Bella? Werewolves? Vampires? You and I both know that there is no such thing,"
She rolled her eyes at me. "Technically ghosts don't exist either and yet here I am. I know that it's really hard to believe but-"
"Extremly hard to believe," I interrupted. "Are you seriously trying to tell me that werewolves and vampires exist?"
"That's precisely what I am saying,"
I shook my head. That was something that I had to see to believe. But then wolves just didn't get that big. Maybe Bella was right. Maybe. Then I remembered that wolf was dead.
"He's dead,"
"Who is dead?"
"The wolf. Jacob. Whatever. He's dead. I tried to pet him and my hand went right through him. He's a ghost just like you,"
"What? No! How?"
"I don't know. It's not like I can just ask a wolf how he died,"
Bella looked crushed. I wished that there was something that I could to ease her pain. I didn't know what to say to her that would help.
I was really tired and decided to go to sleep early. When I woke up the next morning I could feel pain everywhere. It hurt to move. I felt tired as if I'd gotten no sleep at all.
I groaned. Even the simple act of sitting up seemed to take a lot of energy out of me. It was a good thing that Bella was nowhere to be found. I wasn't sure I'd be able to fake it in front of her.
There was a note on my nightstand. It said I've gone to look for Jacob. I hope that you'll be alright without me for a few hours. It never ceased to amaze me that ghosts could still move physical objects like paper and pen. Manipulating physical objects never came easily to a ghost. It usually required a lot of concentration that was fuelled by powerful emotion. It wasn't something they often did in front of others either. Living people never reacted well to seeing a book flying across the room.
Perhaps it was just ghosts that never ceased to amaze me period. I still remember the very first ghost that I'd ever encountered. His name was Anthony. He has been my best friend when he was alive. I was there the day that he died.
I remember we were hanging out together in the front yard when I saw a dog in the middle of the street. I decided to go pet the dog. So I went into the street without looking. Next thing I know I hear him scream "Nessie no!" before being pushed out of the way. I heard screaching tires. Next thing I remember Anthony's parents came running out of the house screaming.
I looked back and saw my friend standing there in shock. He seemed to be okay. Until I saw his dead body there in the street. What was going on? How could he be standing right next to his own body?
It didn't make any sense to me and it scared me. Then I saw a bright white light appear. One that nobody except Anthony and I noticed. Anthony walked right into it and I never saw him again.
At the time I didn't understand what I had just witnessed. It was not until I met another ghost that I finally understood.
My stomach growled then. With more difficulty then usual I was able to get into my wheelchair. I would rather go have breakfast down at the buffet then order room service.
As soon as I got out of the elevator I heard some kind of commotion going on up front. I ignored until I heard someone say "Renesmee," and then I froze and listened in more.
"We're looking for a girl named Renesmee. We heard that she is staying here. Can you tell us where she is at?"
"I'm sorry but I can't give out any information regarding our guests," I heard the exasperated receptionist say. "Unless you are law enforcement I can't help you locate guests,"
Oh no. This couldn't be good. I had a sinking feeling in my gut. I turned my chair around and went toward the front to see who it was that could possibly be looking for me.
"Please can you-"
"I'm sorry but I can't-"
I was shocked by the large crowd of people that I saw gathered around the poor receptionist. They were all so pale and yet inhumanely beautiful at the same time. Even with their backs to me I could see that they were very beautiful.
"Um I think it's me you are looking for," my stomach did somersaults when they all looked at me. Seven pairs of golden eyes were looking right at me. In the back of my mind something about them seemed so familiar. But I would have remembered meeting them before. Wouldn't I?
I noticed that one of the boys looked kind of like me. The boy with the bronze hair color. He stared at me oddly.
"You're Renesmee?" the eldest man in the group asked me.
"Yes. Um. Who are you?"
"I'm Carlisle Cullen. We need to talk,"
The blood drained right out of my face. My heart hammered against my chest. This was about the money I'd stolen. The money that Bella swore nobody would ever find out about.
I took a deep breath. "Okay," I squeaked out.
"Nessie!" I heard a voice that I recognized as Bella's call out to me. I saw her walking toward me fast. "Nessie this is them. This my family,"
I looked around at each and every of one of them. I noticed that the boy with the bronze hair was breathing rapidly and his body was shaking. Then he just collapsed and everyone gathered around him quickly asking him what was wrong.
"Bella," I heard him say. "Bella,"
"Of course!" Bella said. "I can't believe I didn't think of this possibility!"
"What?"
"Edward was reading your mind. Through your mind he can see me and hear me just as clearly as you can,"
