It's just that one: Lately, I haven't had much incentive to write and two: I've been so distracted by both work and my family that I haven't found the time to write. Inside the Dreamworld
Ash shot open his eyes to find the clear blue sky in the place where his bedroom ceiling should be. He slowly picked himself up from the field and looked around to check his surroundings. It looked like he was in the middle of a field of tall grass with the warm wind blowing gently around him.
''W-where am I?'' he asked himself as he continued to look around for any sign of life ''Where did my room go?... Mom?! Pikachu?! Max!? Hello?! Are any of you guys here?!'' he called out, but no one answered.
''Where am I?'' he questioned himself when all of a sudden-
''Ash!''
Ash's ears perked up at the sound of an angelic feminine voice calling out his name in the distance. ''Huh?'' He turned to face the direction of the voice ''Who's there?!'' he called back.
''Ash!'' the voice repeated ''It's me!''
''It's who? Who are you!?'' Ash slowly walked up to the tall grass ''H-hang on, I'm coming to you!'' he said before he ran head-first into the wall of tall green blades. The voice just kept calling him as he ran, pushing aside the grass as he pressed on, following the voice as it started to get clearer and louder the deeper he pushed himself forward. He just ran and ran until his kneecaps started aching until he finally made it past the forest of tall grass where he saw something that made him freeze up in surprise.
He was staring at the view of the sunset over the calm, blue sea from a cliff by the coast and there was also a small house in the distance built on top of the opposite side of the cliff. It was truly a serene sight. But the thing that shocked him the most was the figure standing just at the edge of the cliff a few feet from where he was with her back turned from him. The figure had long tied up brown hair with the fringes flowing in the wind secured by a green bandana with a white Pokeball symbol, she was also wearing an orange sleeveless tunic with white linings with navy blue bike shorts and a green fanny pack. Ash almost instantly recognized the girl.
''May?'' he asked hopefully.
The girl slowly turned around to face him ''Ash?'' she asked. Ash nodded to confirm his identity. May's sapphire eyes started to water as she curled her lips up to a bright smile ''Ash!'' she cried as she ran up to him with her arms stretched out.
''May!'' Ash cried as he too ran up to her in joy. Both trainers were laughing and crying with joy at their reunion while Ash spun her around in the air in his arms briefly before putting her down.
''Ash, You came back!'' May smiled as they held on to each other ''I always knew you would someday!''
''Hey, I promised didn't I?'' Ash smirked slightly ''And I always keep my promises''
May then blushed as she looked down at her feet for a moment.
''May, is there something wrong?'' Ash asked her in concern. She looked back up to him ''Ash, um...There's actually something I wanna tell you'' she began, nervously playing with her hands ''Something that I've always wanted to tell you but never had the courage to up until now''
''What is it May?'' Ash asked.
May took another brief second to press her two index fingers together as if to think about what she wanted to say ''Ash, I...I...I think I'm in love with you!'' she revealed.
Ash widened his eyes in pure utter shock and his mouth opened on a gap. Did his best friend and crush just tell him that she loves him? ''W-what?''
''I love you Ash'' May repeated as she grabbed his hands and held onto them tightly ''I always have, since that day we first met at Birch's lab. I-I just didn't know exactly how much you meant to me until that day back at that sea temple! I've wanted to tell you this even right before I left Sinnoh after the Wallace cup but I was so scared that you wouldn't return my feelings and that I'd lose you as a friend and-'' Ash placed a finger on her lips to silence her ''Oh May, I feel the exact same way about you!'' he confessed ''Ever since that day you left me in Sinnoh, I've thought of no one else but you and you will always have a special place in my heart''
''Really?'' May asked, her eyes sparkling with hope and her hands clasped together.
''Of course May!'' Ash nodded ''I wouldn't tell you that if it wasn't true! I love you May!''
''Oh Ashy!'' May charged into him for a close affectionate hug. Ash held onto her for a moment before May spoke again ''Ash''
''Huh, yeah May?'' he asked her as he looked into her eyes.
''Ash, wake up!'' May suddenly spoke in Max's voice ''Ash, your gonna make us miss the ferry! C'mon Ash, wake up!'' she cried.
''May? why are ya-Ouch!'' Ash suddenly felt a sharp pain in his abdomen.
Kanto region, the Ketchum house in Pallet town, 28th of April
Ash yelpt in pain from Pikachu using iron tail on his stomach in order to wake him up. He then rubbed his eyes and slowly opened his eyelids to see Pikachu at his side and Max wearing his normal clothing, standing at his doorway with his arms folded and a frown on his face.
''Morning Pikachu, Morning Max'' Ash greeted both his pokemon and his old traveling companion with a tired smile "Huh, that's new. You've never tried waking me up that way before"
''Pika Pika'' Pikachu shook his head negatively at his friend.
''Ash Ketchum, do you have any idea what time it is?'' Max tapped his foot impatiently while tapping the face of his watch "Have you ever considered buying an alarm clock?"
''I don't need to. I have an alarm clock with me all the time'' Ash informed him as he climbed out of bed and did a yawn/stretch to wake himself up completely ''It's called Pikachu!'' he motioned his head towards the little yellow pokemon.
''Pika'' he nodded before he jumped off the bed and climbed up onto Ash's shoulder ''What time is it anyway?'' Ash asked Max while he rubbed his eyes. The boy checked his watch again ''Seven'' he answered.
''What!?'' Ash stumbled in shock, nearly knocking Pikachu off his shoulder ''That means our boat leaves in four hours! Why didn't anyone wake me up?!'' he shouted as he ran past Max towards the bathroom whilst carrying a towel.
''What do you think me and Pikachu have been trying to do for the past five minutes, mr sleepyhead?!'' Max scolded him before Ash slammed the bathroom door, giving him some privacy to shower ''And hurry up, your mom's already made us breakfast!'' he called before he went downstairs to the kitchen.
After about five minutes Ash rushed back into his room with the towel wrapped around his waist and opened his wardrobe to look over all the outfits that he wore up 'til today, trying to decide which one to go to May's party in. He hummed in indecision with his hand rubbing his slightly hairy chin.
"Whew, I don't know" he huffed with his hands on his hips "Pikachu, what do you think?" He asked the yellow pokemon on his shoulder.
"Pika" he gazed at the outfits briefly until he found Ash old Hoenn attire "Pika, Pikachu!" He pointed to the clothes.
"You think so?" Ash asked "Pika Pi" Pikachu nodded knowingly.
"Good idea buddy" Ash smiled as he grabbed the clothes and held them out to observe them better "It would probably be best If I go in something she'll recognize me in. I wonder if this all still fit's me"
He then proceeded to try on the clothes, Pikachu jumped off of his shoulders and on the bed so he could put the shirt and hooded jacket on. After a minute or so, Ash stood before his pokemon in the full Hoenn set of clothes including his traditional trademark cap. He smiled gleefully "Well, what do you know. Still fits like a glove...Well, the glove parts still do at least" he noted, looking at his fingerless gloved hands.
"Pika Pi" Pikachu cheered, climbed back up Ash shoulder as Ash packed the rest of his stuff, including his old Sinnoh set of clothes (My personal favorite btw) as a spare. However, his thoughts went back to that dream he just had where May confessed her feelings for him while he returned them. Did Ash really mean what he said or was that just what his dreamlike self said in his mind? Did he really love May and could she ever love him back? He wanted both of those thoughts to be true but he wasn't so sure whether she'd feel the same way about him even though his heart kept beating rapidly and he felt beautifies in his stomach every time he thought about her. Of course, he can't just tell her right as soon as he turned up at her house. That would just make things awkward for them at her birthday! Plus, if she didn't return her feelings for him he would probably lose her as a friend! He would have to choose a moment to tell her, a right moment...he just didn't know when.
Ash sighed slightly while he finished packing "C'mon Pikachu, we'd better not keep Max waiting" he then walked out of his room and down the stairs holding his red and green suitcase and carrying his backpack over his shoulder into the dining room where Max was waiting patiently at the table with two stacks of pancakes both with a dab of butter and smothered in syrup.
"I figured as much" Max smiled warmly, looking at Ash's choice of clothing "That you'd wanna dress in something that May would recognize you in...brings back a lot of memories, that outfit"
"Sure does. Oh boy, pancakes! My favorite" Ash sat down in front of his own stack while Pikachu jumped down and began to eat from a bowl of berries on the floor beside Ash's chair that Delia left out for him "You didn't have to wait for me, ya know"
"Yes I did" Max nodded while they ate "It's just manners. Mom and Dad have always said that you should always wait for everyone to sit down at the table before you eat"
That was true. Aside from being wealthy, both Norman and his wife Caroline wanted to raise both their children in a well-mannered and socially acceptable environment such as waiting for everyone to sit down at the table before eating, asking to be excused from the table and saying please and thank you for everything. Hence why Ash felt so relaxed when he first met them.
"Well, technically not everyone is at the table" Ash pointed as he looked around for Deila "Have you seen my mom anywhere?"
"No, sorry Ash" Max shook his head "When I came down here, all I found was these two plates in the stove along with this note on the counter" he told him, taking a small piece of paper out from his pocket and sliding it across the table towards Ash. Ash unfolded the note to read;
To Ash and Max
I've already cooked you two your breakfast.
Check the stove.

P.S Don't worry about me, I've already eaten.
"Mom!" Ash called out "Are you still here?!"
"Yeah!" Deila called back from her own room upstairs "I'm just in my room. I'll be down in just a minute!"
Ash and Max just shrugged at each other and went back to eating. After a minute or two, with Ash, Pikachu, and Max all finished with their breakfast, they heard Delia's bedroom door open and looked up the staircase to see her dressed in a green and pink floral sundress, she was also wearing sunglasses over her head and a small straw hat with a blue band around it on her head. She came down the stairs carrying a suitcase in each hand.
"Did you boys enjoy your breakfast?" She smiled casually at the two trainers who just stood there giving her a confused look.
"Mom, why are you dressed like that?" Ash asked her "And what are the suitcases for?"
"Isn't it obvious Ash?" She answered his question with a slight grin "I've decided to come along with you boys!"
"What?!" Both Ash and Max shouted in unison "Why?" Ash asked.
"Well, why not?" Delia asked as she placed her suitcases down by the door "Like you said Ash, it's only for the weekend and the Maples have plenty of spare rooms in their house and they sound like very hospital people. So, I'm sure they wouldn't mind if they had an extra guest at May's party"
"But mom" Ash argued "What's made you wanna come with us all of a sudden?"
Delia stopped and sighed with her hands on her hips "Ash, what happened between the three of us last night made me realize something; We haven't had that much fun together since before you went off on your first journey eight years ago. Tell me something Ash, can you remember the last time we ever did anything or went anywhere fun together over these years?" She asked him.
Ash thought for a moment to find a specific memory "Well...there was this one time we were in Porta Vista for that beach beauty and pokemon costume contest" he recollected.
"Okay, that's one" Delia nodded "Anything else?"
''Well erm...'' Ash paused to think again with a hand on his chin. He took a while to search his thoughts until he sighed in defeat ''No''
''Exactly my point'' Delia placed her hand on his shoulder ''Ash, I rarely ever see you anymore and now you're just about to go away and leave me behind again. Please Ash, let me come with you. Sometimes I need a break too you know. It'll be sort of like a mini vacation!'' Delia pleaded with her son ''Look, if you're that worried about it then I promise that I won't get in the way of you and May wanting to spend quality time together.'' she promised with a small wink.
''It's not that mom'' Ash said and then looked to Max ''I don't know. Max, would your mom and dad be okay with it if mom turned up too?''
Max just smiled ''Well, I don't see why not'' he assured ''I'm sure they'd be delighted to have your mom there. Look Delia, If you wanted to come with us, all you had to do was let us know'' he said to her.
Ash nodded ''Then it's settled; mom, you're coming with us!''
''Pika Pikachu!'' Pikachu cried ecstatically.
''Yippee yay!'' Delia cried while leaping with joy in the air. She then looked at two boys who stared at her with wide eyes. She then blushed and rubbed the back of her neck in embarrassment from acting so girly ''Right'' she coughed in her throat ''Are you two all packed? Let's get going, don't wanna waste much time!'' she unlocked the door and walked outside, leaving the boys to gather their own bags and put their shoes on and joining her outside. Ash noticed that his mom was struggling with both of her bag and was just about to say something when max decided to jump ahead.
''Oh, would you like me to carry one of those for you to the car, Delia?'' Max offered.
''Oh, thank you Max. How very thoughtful of you'' Delia said in gratitude as Max took the suitcase off her and walked in front of her towards her vehicle.
''Not a problem'' Max replied with a grunt of effort ''Geez, what did she pack in this thing, rocks?'' he whispered.
''Huh, such a little gentleman'' Delia looked back at Ash with a smirk as he walked behind her while she unlocked her car with her keys ''You could learn a thing or two from him, young man''
''Yeah, sure mom, whatever you say'' Ash replied, rolling his eyes with that comment while Delia put her suitcase in the trunk of her car ''Just try and remember exactly whose mom you are'' he added in a whisper.
''Did you say something over there, Ashton Casey Ketchum?!'' Delia shot him a slightly threatening glare.
''Nope! Nothing mom!'' Ash shook his head with his eyes widened in panic and Pikachu ducking under his shoulder ''I thought so'' Delia smiled warmly. Ash and Pikachu both blew off a sigh of relief. Delia is generally a nice woman most of the time but if someone rubs her the wrong way, she can quickly become your worst nightmare. Ash quickly made his way over to the back of his mom's car and placed his bags into the trunk.
''Casey?'' Max asked with a raised eyebrow and a teasing grin.
''What? It was my grandpa's name'' Ash explained briefly as he slammed the trunk door shut ''It's a unisex name, get over it" he added as he climbed into the shotgun seat of the car while Max got in the middle back seat and Pikachu climbed down and sat on Ash's lap.
''Wait, what about Mimey?'' Ask asked Delia as she started the car and they put on their seatbelts ''Isn't he coming with us?''
''It's okay Ash. He said he'll watch the house while we're away'' she assured him with a smile. When she reversed out of the driveway, they found the Mr mime in question standing on the side of the path in front of the house waiting for them with his hands together patiently. Delia stopped beside him and rolled down her window so he could hear her.
''Okay, Mimey'' Delia began ''We're only gonna be away for a couple of days. I've left you a list of jobs to do while I'm away on the fridge. There should be enough pokemon food and berries in the pantry for you to last until me and Ash get back and if there's any trouble while I'm away, call the number on the back of the list, okay? I'm trusting you with this''
''Mime mime mime'' Mr Mime saluted with an attentive smile.
''Alright Mimey, I know I can count on you'' Delia smiled back at her pokemon ''You be good now and I shall see you Monday night. Goodbye!'' she waved along with Ash, Pikachu, and Max and saying their respective goodbyes to him as they drove away from the house with Mimey waving back at them as he watched the car disappear in the distance.
''So boys, what's the plan?'' Delia asked.
''Well mom, first we've gotta make a stop by Professor Oak's place to pick up some of my pokemon before heading to the docks'' Ash told her "When we get to the docks, we need to find a barbar shop somewhere in the town so that I can get a shave before we get on the ferry" Ash rubbed his hand over his developing beard.
''Oak's place?'' Delia asked with a confused look ''Why? I mean, you've already earned all eight badges in Hoenn, right?''
''Yeah, I did. But Max's dad said that if me and him were to ever cross paths again; he'd challenge me to a full six-on-six rematch'' Ash explained himself with a determined nod.
''Ah, I should have known'' Delia smiled knowingly ''When one of the worlds best pokemon gym leaders challenges you to an all-out battle, that's an offer too good for someone like you to refuse'' she added as she drove right at a turn and towards the hill to Oak's lab and pokemon ranch.
''During my gym battle with him five years ago, I've only ever seen three of his pokemon before'' Ash noted whilst he envisioned various scenes from that battle years ago with Norman's Slakoth, Vigoroth and Slaking against his own team; Pikachu, Torkoal and Sceptile back when he was still a Grovyle. Ash found Norman's battling style pretty unpredictable. His Slakoth might be slow but his reflexes allow him to dodge even the quickest of attacks, forcing the trainer to fight at his own pace. Vigoroth's hyperspeed can throw any pokemon regardless of strength or speed off balance, and Norman somehow taught it how to use flamethrower! And Slaking's strength and durability make's it a force truly to be reckoned with as it can both take and deal out incredibly powerful blows. But Ash hasn't yet seen any other pokemon that Norman had under his possession.
''So I'll need to come prepared for whatever his other three pokemon will be'' Ash concluded out loud ''So I'll be taking six of my best pokemon to put together the perfect team!''
''Pika Pikachu?'' Pikachu asked him as he tugged at his shirt from his lap and looking up at him with pleading eyes. Ash looked down at him with a smile and picked him up ''Of course I'm gonna take you with me buddy!'' he rubbed the top of his head, earning a purr from his yellow pokemon ''You've already got a spot reserved on my team and besides, I think May'll be disappointed if you weren't there. But we still need to gather five more of our friends for the rest of his pokemon in case you get knocked out, okay?''
''Pika Pi'' Pikachu nodded, understanding his friend's plan and excited about seeing some of his old pokemon friends again.
''Yeah, but dad will definitely win this time though'' Max smirked with his arms folded ''He's had five whole years to train up his pokemon for this moment, and don't forget; people have said that dad's so strong that he'll end up a member of the elite four one day, he's that strong!'' Max reminded him as Delia drove up the road on the hill towards Oak's ranch. She could now see the small building with a large garden and red silo.
''I know Max'' Ash said ''But me and Pikachu have had five years to train too and we've done some traveling and caught some new pokemon since our last battle! And, I've been picking up some new tricks over the years'' he finished with a cocky grin.
''That's true, you have definitely been a busy Beedrill over the years Ash" Max agreed, recalling the time he first saw Pikachu use electoball during their last battle yesterday, a move he'd never seen him use before "But the only reason why you won against my dad last time was because he was going easy on you for May! But this time, he'll be giving it his all and then some!'' Max told him.
''I'm sure hoping that he does...because that means that I won't have to hold anything back either!'' Ash smirked proudly with both of his hands clenching into balls in front of him in determination.
''Pika!'' Pikachu cheered as Delia pulled the car up to a parking space outside the building and stopped the vehicle ''Well here we are, kids. Professor Oak's ranch'' Delia exited the car while the two boys followed suit. They then walked up the pathway to the building's entrance and entered to the reception area where a woman with blue eyes and black hair tied back into a small ponytail in a standard lab coat was sitting at her desk.
''Oh, good morning Ash Ketchum'' she greeted when she saw the group of three people and one pokemon ''And to you too Mrs Ketchum'' she then looked to Max ''And young Max Maple! Back so soon?''
''Yeah, only for a little while though'' Max waved back to the woman in a friendly manner
"Excuse me miss" Ash waved for her attention "Is Professor Oak here today? I wanna see him about collecting some of my pokemon" he informed her.
''Let me check'' the receptionist hummed before looking briefly at her computer monitor ''Ah yes, Oak is in his private laboratory. Just down the hallway, on the last door at the end'' she pointed down the hallway.
''Same as always'' Ash nodded ''Okay, thanks'' he thanked her before the group walked down the hallway and down towards the door the receptionist told them Oak's lab would be. Ash then knocked on the door ''Hey there Professor? It's me, Ash Ketchum'' he called ''I have a small favor to ask you''
The group waited for a moment for the professor to open the door. They heard the lock from the other side turn and the door flung open to reveal a peachy-skinned man in his early fifties with blue eyes and short gray hair with thick bushy eyebrows. He was wearing a white lab coat over a light maroon collared polo shirt and beige colored pants and matching brown loafers. This man was Kanto's lead pokemon professor and former Indigo league Champion, Samuel Oak. He gave Ash and his Pikachu a warm welcoming smile. ''Ah, Ash Ketchum and Pikachu! I was wondering when I would see you two again'' he greeted him with a firm handshake.
''Good morning professor. It's good to see you too'' Ash accepted his gesture happily.
''Pika Pika!'' Pikachu greeted him with a wave. Oak then smirked slightly once he noticed Ash's bumfluff "You need to shave, young man"
"Yeah, I know" Ash nodded with a knowing smile.
Oak looked behind the young trainer and noticed two other people behind him ''Mrs Ketchum! What a pleasant surprise to see you again!'' Oak smiled with a wave at Ash's mom, he then noticed the change of outfit on her ''And may I just say that you're looking lovely this morning. No one wears green and pink quite like you do Delia'' he commented with a small wink at her.
Delia blushed a little nervously at the professor's complement ''Why, uh, um t-thank you, Samuel'' she sweatdropped while giggling slightly.
Oak then turned to Max ''And if it isn't the young prodigy himself! Max Maple!'' he said in surprise ''Its a real pleasure to see you again"
''Likewise professor'' Max smiled back at him with a nod.
''And how fairs your journey so far?'' Oak then asked him ''Are you taking good care of that Charmander I gave you?'' he raised his eyebrow questionably.
''You bet Professor!'' Max assured him with a proud smile ''And I've also caught some new pokemon already! I've just earned my first badge in Cerulean city yesterday''
''Oh good'' Oak congratulated the young trainer ''That makes it nine now right? Keep up the good work son. Oh please, do come in. come, come!'' the Professor stood back to allow the trio to enter his lab. One by one, they entered the large room filled with high-tech equipment and scientific instruments scattered all around the tables and desks in the room.
''So Professor'' Ash said to Oak once they were all inside the center of the lab ''Anything interesting happen around here lately?''
''Not really Ash'' Oak shrugged his shoulders ''Nothing to complain about. Just the typical minor experiment here and there to keep myself occupied. Yep, nothing of significant importance has turned up around Kanto ever since you, Brock and Misty saved that poor girl Molly from that Unown incident in Greenfield six years ago''
''Yeah'' Ash rubbed the back of his head, recalling that fiasco with the fake Entei kidnapping Delia and hypnotizing her into believing that she was Molly's mother ''That was quite an unusual experience for us, wasn't it mom?'' he asked his mother, who smiled awkwardly at them both ''Indeed it was Ash, though 'Unusual' isn't the exact word I would use in my case. In my case, I would've use the word 'frightening'''
''Pikachu'' Pikachu nodded in agreement.
''I remember reading about that whole crisis in a book once during my time in Hoenn'' Max spoke up ''There was something about this town that got cut off by a swarm of Unown, trapping this top scientist's daughter inside her home. I think she was around my age!'' Max then turned to Ash ''Ash, you were there? So you must know what really happened then''
Ash frowned a little ''Yeah, well you see Max, there is a couple of things the books left out'' he explained himself ''You see, the girl; Molly, lost her dad down in some ruins and the Unown fed off her loneliness and created that barrier around her town and created an illusion of the legendary pokemon Entei to act as her father'' he said with Pikachu nodding along with his story.
''So her dad...Died?!'' Max asked in horror with his hands on his cheeks.
''Oh no no Max'' Delia stepped in ''He didn't die, he just got lost'' she cleared up for her son ''You see, lost and dead aren't always the same thing. Anyway, the Entei the Unown created kidnapped me and they tried to make me believe that I was Molly's mother. I was held up in that crystal castle for hours until Ash came and saved me and with a little help from his friends, defeated the Unown and restored Greenfield to its natural state'' Delia finished with a warm smile at her son.
''And the rest is history'' Ash nodded.
''Pika Pi'' Pikachu said, grinning from ear to ear. Max, however, was still a little confused ''But in the book, it said that it was an Entei that saved Greenfield''
Oak just chuckled ''As Ash said, there are some things the books leave out'' he patted the young trainer's head before he decided to change the subject ''How about you Max? Did you get that Pokenavi fixed up?''
''I'm afraid not Professor'' Max shook his head ''We found your old friend Winsten's shop in Cerulean after my battle with Misty and he said he couldn't fix it. Too badly damaged to fix he said'' he then put on a happy face ''But he sold me a brand new one at a discounted price for the trouble. See?'' he held the new device that he spent last night setting up before going to bed up to show the professor to see it.
''Oh good'' Oak smiled with a nod ''I've always told old Winsten that he was better with poketech than he was with people'' he sweatdropped nervously.
''Yeah, we kind of figured. He was little grouchy and rude when we first saw him'' Ash spoke up ''Until he saw Pikachu and told us all about his own Pikachu that passed away years ago''
''Pikachu'' Pikachu nodded.
''Ah yes, Winsten and his almighty Pikachu!'' Oak chuckled heartily at the memories of his younger years with Winsten by his side ''Those two were like two peas in a pod, always together! Kind of like you two Ash...However, his own Pikachu was a lot more 'cooperative' when it came to Pokeballs''
''Anyway Oak'' Deila shook her head back to the task at hand ''Much as we'd love to stay and chat about our past adventures but we're on a bit of a tight schedule today'' she informed the professor.
''Oh right ''Oak nodded understandingly ''So, what brings you down to see me today?''
''I need to access my garden professor'' Ash told him ''I need to select some of my pokemon''
Oak just raised an eyebrow curiously ''May I ask why?''
''Well, we're going back to Hoenn for the weekend for May's sixteenth birthday and I wanna take some of my pokemon with me'' Ash explained to him their plan ''May's father is one of the gym leaders and he'll want a rematch during our time in Petalsburg city''
''And we're in kind of a rush Oak'' Max added as he looked at the clock on his wall briefly ''Our ferry leaves in less than three and a half hours!''
''Oh, I see'' Oak said as he quickly opened his draw to get the key to Ash's pokemon garden ''Then I suppose we shouldn't waste time. There's nothing more important than spending time with your family and friends, especially on their birthday'' he smiled at them ''If you'll follow me then'' he added as he opened a door on the side of his lad that leads to an adjoining corridor with doors with numbers and names of trainers on each of them. Oak then lead the group down the hall, looking for Ash's door.
''Aha, here we are!'' Oak cheered as they came to the door with Ash's full name and trainer number on it. Oak then handed Ash the key with which he used it to unlock and open the door.
On the other side of the door, the group found themselves standing before a vast, lush green field surrounded by trees and plants with many different colorful flowers, fruits and berries growing from them. They also saw a large lake in the center of the field for the water pokemon to swim and play in under a stone bridge and the morning sun was shining down, warming them and the gentle summer breeze made the leaves on the trees sway slightly. When Ash first started his journey eight years ago, he told Professor Oak that he wanted a garden big enough to fit as much pokemon as he could, and he did have to say, Oak certainly delivered.
''Wow'' Max breathed as he drank in the landscape.
''Oh, Look!'' Delia pointed up to the sky. The others looked up and saw some of Ash's flying type pokemon flying above them.
Ash smiled widely at them ''Hey you guys! Down here!'' he called up to them.
One of them heard his cry and looked down ''Star?'' Staraptor asked as she looked down and saw Ash and Pikachu waving up to her ''Star!'' she cried in happiness. She then turned to her other flying friends; Swellow, Talonflame and Unfezant ''Staraptor Star Staraptor star! (Hey guys, Ash is back!)''
The three other flying pokemon chirped back at her with their own names as if you ask her if she's right while they all still flew.
''Star star! Staraptor star!( Yes, it's true. Look down there! See for yourself)'' she pointed her left wind down below with her other one still flapping. The other pokemon stopped and looked down to see their trainor and their friend Pikachu ''Pika Pika!(Hey guys!)'' Pikachu waved back up to them.
''Swellow! (It is Ash!)'' Swellow chirped excitedly while dashing in the air.
''Talon Talon! (And Pikachu too!) Talonflame added with equal excitement.
''Swell, Swellow swell?!( And, is that Max too?!)'' Swellow chimed as he caught sight of Max looking up at him
''Unfez Unfezant Unfez! (Lets get down there and met them!) he said, the others chimed in agreement before they flew down towards the group and landed on the ground on their feet in front of Ash.
''Staraptor, Talonflame, Swellow, Unfezant!'' Ash ran over to each of them to give them all a friendly pat on the head and a hug, earing a purr of affection from all of them ''It so good to see you guys again!''
''Pika Pika Pikachu!'' Pikachu leaped off of Ash's shoulder to say hello to the four bird-type pokemon with all five of them leaping up in the air with excitement at the reunion.
Max then walked up to them looking at Swellow ''Hey Swellow, you remember me? It's Max'' he asked it. Swellow just responded by diving towards him tackling him to the ground and lightly pecking his neck affectionately ''Haha! I'll take that as a yes!'' Max said through his giggles. Ash and the others smiled at the scene before he turned to Staraptor ''Hey Staraptor, can you find the others and bring them here?'' he asked her.
''Star staraptor!'' she chirped before she flapped her wings to ascend to the sky with Swellow, Talonflame and Unfezant following her up before they each broke off to find the rest of the pokemon.
Staraptor flew into the forest, where Gliscor and Noctowl were resting on the treetops while Heracross and Leavanny were sharpening their claws on the treebark below them. Bayleaf and Torkoal were also resting on the grass while Bulbasaur, Gible and Snivy slept on Torterra's back.
''Star Staraptor star star! (Hey guys, wake up! Ash and Pikachu are here!'' she called them. The pokemon all stopped what they were doing and looked up at her, replying with their own names. Torterra slowly stood up on all four of his legs, pushing Bulbasaur, Gible and Snivy off his back before they all started to follow Staraptor back to Ash.
Meanwhile at the lake, all of Ash's water type pokemon; Kingler, Totadile, Corphish, Oashwatt, Palpitoad and Krookodile were all in the water either swimming, playing Marco Polo, or slashing each other playfully while at the bank of the lake, Donphan, Quilava, Glalie and Muk were watching them play while Glalie told them another one of his corny jokes.
''Glalie Glalie Lie lie Glalie? (What do you get when you cross a scientist with a snowman?)''
His friends just shook their heads or replied with their own names.
''Glalie!(Brainfreeze!)''
With that, Glalie and his friends laughed until Swellow flew up towards them from behind.
''Swellow, swelllow swell!(Everyone, Ash and Pikachu have returned!)'' he informed them while flapping his wings.
Both the water pokemon and the four pokemon on the bank stopped and looked at him saying their own names in surprise and all got up to follow him back towards Ash.
At a different part of the Forest, Sceptile and a newly evolved Floatzel were having a friendly spar with Sceptile using leaf blade back to back while Floatzel was dodging them all while occasionally using ice punch on his opponent, which Sceptile narrowly ducked each one so far while Infernape, Scraggy, Charizard, Pignite, Boldore, Hawlucha and Snorlax were watching the fight and eating berries (Snorlax's pile was noticeably larger than the others)
After Floatzel dodged another leaf blade from Sceptile, he decided to use the new move that he learned by himself. His fangs glowed blue and he bit Sceptile on the arm.
''Tile!'' Sceptile screeched in pain and looked at his arm that was now covered in ice ''Sceptile!'' he yelled in horror.
''Floatzel!'' Folatzel cried realizing what he'd just done to his friend ''Float, float!'' he apologized as he looked at the ice. Infernape then got up and walked over to Sceptile and lightly exhaled onto the ice causing it to melt away into a sad puddle of water underneath him.
''Scepile!'' he thanked the fire monkey pokemon.
''Infernape'' Infernape nodded responsively. Sceptile then looked at Floatzel who nervously twiddled his paws together. Sceptile then smiled and cheered his name at him as if to congratulate him for his victory. The others joined in with him just before Talonflame flew down to them ''Talon talonflame talon!(Hey you guys! Ash and Pikachu are here!)'' he informed them. The pokemon all gasped in surprise and dropped their berries except for Snorlax who wasn't paying much attention and focusing mainly on his food.
''Charizard! Char char Charizard! (Ash is here? Well then, we'd better head over to him! Come on everyone!)'' Charizard flew off along with Talonflame while the others followed on foot. Infernape looked back to see Snorlax still eating.
''Infernape! Infernape infernape nape!(Come on Snorlax, Ash'll be expecting us!)'' Infernape yelled while motioning him to follow him.
''Snore, snore snorelax snore!(Aww, but I haven't finished eating!)'' Snorlax moaned in response.
''Infer! Infernape Infernape ape Infer!( Oh for Acreus sake! Can't you think about something other than eating or sleeping for five damned minutes!) Infernape rolled his eyes and shouted in annoyance. He then grabbed the morbidly obese bear pokemon by his arm and started dragging him away from the pile of berries ''Infer, Infernape Infernape Infer (Come on, Maybe Ash brought along some exotic food for us to try)'' he tried to tempt him with a small smirk.
''Snore?!(Food!)'' Snorlax shot his head upright with a wide grin while Infernape still held onto his arm ''Snorlax Snorlax Snore Snore! (Well why didn't you say so!) he cried with glee at the thought of eating many colorful berries and poffins that awaited him. And so, he stood up, dropped his handful of berries and run in the direction his fellow pokemon went with Infernape still holding on for dear life on his back.
''Look!'' Max called out as he pointed towards the large group of pokemon of many different types heading towards the group. Ash grinned from ear to ear at the sight ''Hey you guys!'' he waved to them. Ash then noticed that they weren't slowing down as they got closer and closer.
''Um Ash, they are gonna stop right?'' Delia asked her son with a little worry in her voice as she observed just how fast they were coming towards them.
''I'm sure they'll stop mom'' Ash nodded confidently while still looking at his approaching pokemon.
''Are you sure?'' Oak asked as he started inching himself away from the group, his face filling with doubt ''They are coming at us at quite a pace''
''No need to worry Oak'' Ash pick up on Dawn's saying ''My pokemon know when to slow down'' Thought even as he said that, he noticed them coming closer without any sign of slowing down. Even Max was starting to get worried.
''Ash, I think we'd better move outta the way'' he said as he dashed to the side with both his mom and Oak following suit ''Like now!''
''Okay guys, you can slow down!'' Ash called to them as he sweatdropped slightly while Pikachu's eyes widened in fear of being trampled by the much bigger pokemon ''Guys...Guys! GUYS!'' ''PIKA!'' Ash and Pikachu shouted desperately with a frantic wave of their arms but it was too late. The pokemon jumped on their master and the yellow mouse pokemon friend so hard that an explosion of dirt could be seen a mile away from the lab.
As the dust subsided, Max, Delia, and Oak poked their heads out to see the group of pokemon around their friends. The larger pokemon were licking Ash all over his body while the smaller ones were playfully wrestling with Pikachu.
''Guys, stop it!'' Ash cried in a fit of giggles from the affection his pokemon were showing him. Once the smaller ones were done saying hello to Pikachu, they soon tackled to join the others with Ash ''No, not you too! Stop that tickles! Haha! Guys, uncle, okay?! I give in!''
With that, all the pokemon stepped away so Ash and Pikachu could collect themselves ''Hey, I've got you'll a little something'' he told them before he reached for his backpack and brought out two large pink cardboard boxes with Pikachu's help. He then untied the blue velvet ribbed on the top of one of them and opened the lid to reveal a colorful batch of what looked like cupcakes. The pokemon just widened their pupils with anticipation as they gazed at the tempting confections.
''Pokecakes'' Ash explained to them what they were ''From the Kalos region. Made by a good friend of mine before I left. Now, there's enough for one for each of you so don't be greedy, okay?'' he told them sternly before he and Pikachu went around the pokemon, giving them each a pokecake with their ideal color scheme and theme. Max, Delia and Oak just smiled at the scene. It was then, Ash eventually got to Floatzel, he raised a confused eyebrow at the weazel pokemon ''Hey, aren't you...'' the then paused for a brief moment. He remembered that he did own a Buizel before. He traded in his Aipom for him from Dawn back in the Sinnoh region. Ash then grinned as he put two and two together ''Buizel, you evolved!''
''Float Float!'' Floatzel nodded to confirm his theory ''Floatzel Floatzel Float!'' he motioned his head towards a nearby tree as if he wanted to show Ash his new move ''Float Floatzel Float!'' his fangs glowed blue once more and with a pounce, he bit hard into the tree bark and turned the part he bit into ice.
Ash nearly dropped the pokecake he brought for him in surprise ''Wow Floatzel, you learned Ice fang! Great job buddy! Here you go, you deserve it.'' he congratulated him as he handed him his orange and blue iced treat. which he happily ate.
As Ash and Pikachu were catching up with their friends, Max looked at them with a wide smile ''Wow Ash, you have so many pokemon now!'' he exclaimed.
The group noticed that comment and looked at him with a confused look. However, both all of Ash's Hoenn and Kanto Pokemon almost immediately recognized him and cheered for his arrival as they ran or flew towards him to be petted in response ''Oh guys, I've missed you too'' Max responded to their welcome before he started checking all the other pokemon he'd never seen before with his green pokedex for more information about them.
Once Ash had given every pokemon present their cakes, he looked into the box and saw that he still had thirty orange and brown ones, one grey and red one and one Purple and black swirl one with a green center still left inside. He looked around for a moment ''Hey..were's Noivern and my Tauros?'' he asked Charizard.
''Char Charizard (I think Unfezant went to get them)'' the orange dragon pokemon replied.
At that moment, the ground beneath them started to shake. Everyone then turned to see a stampede of Tauros heading towards Ash. Unfezant flew over them and yelled his name out, telling them to move out of the way. The other pokemon plus Max, Delia and Oak ran out of their way as they headed towards Ash.
''Not again!'' Ash yelled as he held the box close to his chest ready to be trampled. But at the last minute, a large bat/dragon type pokemon with black and purple wings, a purple underbelly, and red claws and nostrils landed in front of the herd and used his supersonic ability to stop them in their tracks. The Tauros all stopped a foot away from him and sat down on the ground in response. Noivern nodded back at them, pleased with himself for what he'd done before he turned back to Ash.
''Noivern!'' Ash cried out happily as he dropped the box on the floor and ran over to hug the pokemon.
''Noivern!(Daddy!)'' Noivern chirped as he ran to his carer for a fond embrace while he licked his cheek.
''Haha! I've missed you to Noivern'' Ash smiled at him.
Max looked up to see the large hulking pokemon hugging his friend ''Um Ash...W-what is that?'' he asked rather fearfully.
''Oh Max, this is Noivern'' Ash introduced him to the bat/dragon pokemon.
''N-noivern huh?'' Max brought out his pokedex to scan it;
Noivern, the sound wave pokemon and the evolved form of Noibat. Noivern's ultrasonic waves can easily crumble a bolder to mere pebbles and are widely known to attack their prey under the cover of darkness at night
''H-he looks kind of scary'' Max stuttered out of fear.
Ash understood why he was scared of Noivern. At first glance, he can look intimidating to both humans and pokemon but the truth was, Noivern was nothing but a big old sweetheart.
''Max, come here'' Ash held his hand out to the Hoenn trainer. Max hesitated for a moment before he accepted Ash hand and allowed him to slowly pull him towards Noivern, who just stared at him indifferently.
''Now, hold out your hand to him'' Ash instructed him calmly ''Just relax and no sudden movements''
Max nodded quickly and held out his right hand towards Noivern with the others watching the scene in silence while secretly fearing for the boy's life. Noivern looked at the boy's hand and then at his facial expression. Max had his eyes tightly squinted shut, his nose scrunched and his whole body trembled slightly. He didn't need to use his soundwaves to tell him that he was terrified of him but he could also see the boy wanted to get better acquainted with him.
''It's okay Noivern, he's a friend of mine'' Ash told him using his soothing tone of voice ''Friend'' he motioned his head to Max who still had his eyes squinted shut. Noivern knew he could trust the word of the man he first saw when he hatched as a Noibat and imprinted himself on to him as his father ''Noi'' he chirped slightly before he slowly walked over to Max and lightly brushed his forehead on his palm. Max opened his eyes fully and smiled up at the pokemon ''Hey, it worked!'' he gasped as he marveled at the pokemon's behavior towards his gesture.
''Try petting his ears, he likes that'' Ash told him.
Max then trailed his hand up towards Noiverns speaker-like ears and rubbed them excitedly causing Noivern to roll over with glee on his back with Max laughing while Delia silently awed at the scene and Oak just smiled warmly to see a human and Pokemon get along so well.
''You see Max'' Ash chuckled as Noivern started licking Max in the face ''Noivern may be scary on the outside but on the inside, he's nothing but a big old marshmallow...Except for when he's battling of course!'' he added with a small fist pump.
''Yeah, I guess your right'' Max agreed with him.
''Pika Pika!'' Pikachu ran up to Noivern and joyfully jumped up onto his chest.
''Noivern Noi! (Big brother!)'' Noivern screeched with joy as he held the little mouse pokemon in his wings as Pikachu buried his face in his chest.
''Wow, Noivern seems to be really fond of you and Pikachu Ash'' Delia marveled at the scene ''Where is he from?''
''Well, Noiverns are more commonly found in the Kalos region'' Oak explained to her
''Oak's right mom'' Ash answered as he was handing out the rest of the cakes when he made sure that the Tauros had calmed down ''I was traveling with my new friends when we found Noivern here as a Noibat egg but when we found it, it was stone cold. We had to act fast or it wouldn't survive! So me and my pokemon all came together to try and heat it up and it worked! Noibat hatched from his egg right in my hands! And now Noivern is here with us today'' he told the story.
''Pika Pikachu!'' Pikachu nodded in agreement.
''That awesome Ash!'' Max shouted excitedly and then felt his face drop slightly ''Just like what happened with May and Manaphy''
Oak's eyes widened to almost dinner plate size when Max mentioned the pokemon ''Wait, A Manaphy?! The fabled prince of the sea?'' he asked. Oak has lived a long life and he of course heard the tales of Manaphy's and of the people of the water, the ancient advanced civilization that disappeared off the face of the earth over a thousand years ago. But, up until today, he'd just thought that they were just an urban legend because he'd never seen a Manaphy or anything relating to the people of the water's culture. He then turned his gaze to Ash ''You've seen a Manaphy?''
''Yeah'' Ash nodded ''And we can prove it to'' he added as he reached for his phone in his pocket and search through it until he found a video he took of Manaphy singing on the rock from their boat. He showed it to both Oak and his mom. They breathed in surprise and disbelief as they heard the melody of the pokemon from his device.
''Manaphy'' Delia whispered ''It's so beautiful''
''So, they 'Do' exist'' Oak widened his eyes at the sight ''Then that must mean the people of the water are real too! So ash, how did you come by this pokemon then?''
''It's a long and complicated story'' Ash told them, Max nodded in agreement ''Plus, we swore we'd never talk about it when May's around'' he added.
''Double grammar swore in fact'' Max agreed.
Delia and Oak looked to each other and then nodded ''Well, you could tell us'' Delia offered ''May's isn't here and I promise you that I'll only keep it to myself''
''Also, any new information about this Pokemon and the people of the water would prove beneficial to my research'' Oak smiled.
Ash and Max looked to each other and then nodded, knowing that they could trust them ''Okay'' Ash took a deep breath ''Since we're on a tight schedule today, we'll just give you the short version; almost five years ago, We ran into this group of traveling entertainers called the marina group lead by this girl named Lizabeth along with her family who offered us a ride to the nearest town'' Ash began before Max added his own two cents.
''We also met this really cool guy named Jackie Walker'' he smiled at the memory ''He was a pokemon ranger disguised as a clown in order to protect a Manaphy egg from a group of pirates lead by this man named Phantom who wanted to steal Manaphy to find the underwater sea temple Samiya to get the treasure called 'The sea crown''' he explained.
''The people of the waters home'' Oak breathed
''Exactly'' Ash nodded ''Anyway, during a confrontation with Phantom and his pirates, Manaphy hatched in May's hands and immediately imprinted himself onto May as it's mother'' Ash said while Oak and Delia listened attentively ''So then, we came with them to the temple so Manaphy could become the prince of the sea. But not everything went to plan. You see, during the time they spent together, May and Manaphy grew a very special bond. May started to love him like he was her own baby!''
''That's mother's for you'' Delia giggled softly.
''Anyway, at some point during our adventure, Jack ask me to help separate them from each other'' Ash confessed.
Delia and Oak gasped in shock ''He what?!'' Max shouted in disbelief at the news ''But why would he ask that of you?''
''Because he said that If Manaphy got too attached to May, he wouldn't want to leave her and stay in Samiya for the ceremony'' Ash replied ''He said that once Manaphy was at the temple, she could never see him again...that it was Arceus's plan for Manaphy to become the prince of the sea, something we couldn't go against...Of course, I said no. I could never do something like that to May! But, May had heard our entire conversation and left in tears...She didn't hate me, she said that it wasn't my fault. But, as you could imagine, She was a little pissed at Jack after she said goodbye to Manaphy before he disappeared along with the temple" he finished his story.
''Language'' Max scolded him at the corner of his eye.
''Sorry'' Ash apologized.
''Oh'' Delia said sadly after the story ''That poor girl...No mother should ever have to say goodbye to thier child forever''
''And Manaphy must be all alone in that temple! Surely there had to have been some other way!'' Oak dismissed Jack's statement ''Maybe he could've left the temple only for a short time or perhaps only once a year or-''
''If only it were that simple Professor'' Ash spoke solely with his head down in shame ''Jack made it abundantly clear that May could never see Manaphy again. And even if she could, the sea temple is always moving in time with the sea itself. It could be anywhere in the ocean by now and only a Manaphy is capable of finding Samiya!'' Ash added to further prove the point ''We'd spend the rest of our lives trying to find it only for it all to be in vain...We'll never see either Manaphy or Samiya again''
Oak then walked up to Ash and placed his hand on his shoulder ''Ash, I'll give you a piece of advice; never say never. I wouldn't be so pessimistic about these sorts of things. And who knows, not everything in life is set in stone! Maybe one day, something drastic and unexpected may happen for them to be reunited!''
''I hope you're right Professor'' Max said.
''Never lose hope young man'' Oak winked at him.
Ash only smiled at him as his words sank into his mind. Oak was right in a way. Life was chuck full of unexpected moments, his journeys around the regions had told him as much.
It was at that moment, they heard something snap behind them.
''What's that?'' Ash asked as they looked around.
''Pika Pika'' Pikachu pointed towards some bushes in the forest. Everyone stared at the moving bushes until a small blue, black and gold lion-type pokemon jumped out in a hurry towards them shouting its own name in panic.
''Shinx! Shinx!''
''It's a Shinx!'' Ash shouted.
''A Shinx?'' Max asked as he brought out his pokedex to scan it;
Shinx, the flash pokemon. A Shinx's fur dazzles when it senses danger and can blind its foes using its shiny tail to escape
The Shinx stopped in front of the large crowd of pokemon and the four humans and looked around nervously, whimpering in fear that they were of hostile intent. Max was the first one to step in and take charge.
''Hey there, little fella'' he cooed to it softly as he walked up to him and knelt down on one knee ''Are you hungry?'' he then opened up his yellow backpack and brought out some pokemon food ''Here, I made them myself using my mom's recipe''
Shinx let out a small whimper and started to back away slightly from him in fear ''Hey, c'mon. Don't be scared, Shinx. I'm a pokemon trainer, that means that I want to be your friend. Come on...Trust me" Max cooed.
Shinx then looked up into Max's eyes. He saw nothing in them but love and trust. Shinx then stepped slowly towards him and looked at the food in his hands for a moment before he sniffed them to make sure they were alright. He then used his mouth to take one to eat. He then made a sound of enjoyment and dug right into the food while wagging his star tipped tail back and forth. Max smiled at the fact that Shinx liked the food.
''Aww, such a little cutie'' Delia gushed with her hands clapped together at the scene.
''Ash, Why didn't you tell me you had a Shinx?'' Max asked him while Shinx dug into the pellets.
''Because I don't'' Ash shook his head.
''Pika Pika'' Pikachu shook his head.
''He must be wild then" Oak concluded ''But how did he manage to get in here?''
Pikachu then jumped off Ash's shoulder and ran up to the Shinx ''Pika Pikachu!'' he introduced himself.
''Shinx Shi'' Shinx nodded with a wag of his tail. Then his fur shone a bright light before he ran over and hid himself behind Max's leg.
''What's wrong Shinx?'' Max asked him with a concerned look.
''Shinx's fur tends to flash whenever they sense danger nearby'' Oak informed them.
''Danger?'' Ash questioned him as Pikachu climbed back onto his shoulder ''But we're not trying to hurt it''
''Maybe'' Oak frowned at the bushes ''But I think something out there is''
Shinx then sent an electrical surge to Pikachu, trying to communicate with him ''Pika Pikachu!'' he pointed towards the bushes.
''Huh, what's that Pikachu?'' Ash leaned in with his ear to hear Pikachu ''Shinx is trying to hide from something? But from what?'' he asked.
''I think we're about to find out'' Delia pointed back at the bushes. They could now hear voices coming from the bushes ''Dammit! I had that Shinx right where wanted it! Have you found it yet, James?'' asked a feminine voice.
''Please, try to calm down Jessie!'' replied a male voice with a posh accent ''I'm sure after the damage you've dealt, It couldn't have made it that far. Meowth, have you found anything yet?''
''Wait fella's'' said a male Brooklyn accent ''I think I picked up 'tat little Shinx's scent! Folla me!''
The rustling in the bushes became more frequent and louder until three figures jumped out from the bushes. The woman had long magenta hair and blue eyes and wore a white tank top that showed her midriff and a matching white miniskirt and black boots. The man had short finely cropped periwinkle hair and green eyes and wore a white attire just like his accomplice, except he wore a black shirt under his top and had a purple belt over his white pants. Their last member of the trio was a small cat-like pokemon whose pointy ears scarcely reached the two humans knees in height with a single golden stone on his forehead. Each of the man and woman's tank tops at a large red 'R' on them.
