to: GodReader - yes this is Naruto x Hermione story
The next morning Naruto like always woke up bright and early. He had to be extra quiet making his way out of the dormitory owing to the fact everyone was still asleep. silently moving through the castle when he finally reaching the school grounds he quickly got started on his daily training. Running laps around the Black Lake, push-ups, pull-ups, and his Taijutsu. When he was finished he headed back up to the castle excited for his first day classes. In no time at all he was stepping through the portrait of the fat lady crossing the still empty common room. Naruto was surprised to find that the rest of his dormitory meats were still asleep. Going into the bathroom to shower and getting dressed in his school robes Naruto headed back down in the common room. Sitting in the large plush armchair by the fireplace. He took out his copy of the standard book of spells grade three and started to go over it.
Hermione Granger woke up very excited almost as the same amount she had been on her first day of school two years ago. Today she would not only be starting all of her new courses but would also be tutoring a fellow student by request of her head of house. Getting dressed and ready she made her way down to the common room inorder to wait for the boys to wake up. She had just made it down to spiral staircase when she stopped surprised to find the Naruto already there. He had his spell book open on his lap and his wand was out. Naruto was so focused on what he was reading. He had failed to notice her enter the common room at least that's what Hermione thought.
"Morning." Naruto said looking up from his book and flashing Hermione a bright smile.
"Good morning Naruto, are you already reading the course book ." Hermione asked excited as she quickly walked over to join him, taking the open seat on he large couch.
"Yeah, I've been going over everything ever since Dumbledore got me all my school stuff." Naruto told her as he closed his book and gave her his full attention.
"Oh, that must have been exciting having a month of private lessons." Hermione said sounding a bit envious at Naruto's month of private one on one time with the professors.
"It was cool but sometimes McGonagall could be too strict as for Snape it wasn't to bad if a bit boring. What about you, what did you do during the summer." Naruto asked wondering what everyone did during their time off. McGonagall and Dumbledore both told him about the non-magical world.
"Well this past summer holiday me and my parents went to France." And very quickly Hermione told him about her family's trip. All the while Naruto eagerly listened to everything she was telling him.
"That must have been fun. What's a France?" Naruto asked his head slightly tilted to the side. At this Hermione was a bit taken aback before she quickly reminded herself Naruto had lost most of his memory. So that was how the two Gryffindors spent the better part of the next hour. Naruto talking about everything he did during the last month, while Hermione thanks to her having memorized Hogwarts a History explained more about the school. Naruto was glad that his new tutor you so much about magic and she seemed genuinely happy to answer all of his. questions. Hermione was excited over the fact she had found kindred spirit in Naruto when it came to learning about the magical world not only did the blonde read the cause books he also checked out other book from the library to read.
And so this was the site that the majority of Gryffindors, Harry and Ron included among them stumbled upon when they made there way down to the common room. In order to head down to the Great Hall for breakfast. Hermione Granger, Gryffindors resident bookworm and transfer student Naruto Uzumaki both of them talking animatedly to each other while books lay open in their laps.
"Bloody hell, there's two of them." Ron said flabbergasted at the site of someone being able to keep up with Hermione's love of books. Harry too was surprised by this he would have taken Naruto to be more of the Fred and George type from his first impressions of the blonde.
"Hey guys."Naruto greeted when he realized he and Hermione were no longer along in the common room.
"There you are you two we'd better hurry if you want to make it to breakfast and get our new schedules." Hermione said that she stuffed her book into her already packed bag.
"How come you two were down here so early." Ron asked as they headed out the common room through the portrait home. He and Harry had been surprised this morning to find the blonde was not in his bed like the rest of them.
"I had just come back from my morning training and everybody was still sleeping in the dormitory so I came down to the common room to read some of my books. Hermione just happened to be the first girl to wake up." Naruto explained as the reached a main staircase.
"What are you training for?" Asked Harry who is no stranger to Oliver Woods early morning quidditch team practices. Naruto hesitated not realize until that moment he would have to say things about his past, a past he was supposed to not remember. Everyone saw this but they said nothing.
"I. . . I just train, you know. I've been doing it every since I woke up here." Naruto said sounding a bit unsure of his own explanation. Luckily for him none of them questioned him about they it further. As soon as they entered the Great Hall Naruto was called over to the staff table by the Headmaster.
"I'll be right back." Naruto said as he walked away from Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
"Good morning professor McGonagall, Hey Severus, Old man." Naruto greeted happily once he had reached the staff table.
"It's Professors Dumbledore and Snape to you Uzumaki." Snape started to say.
"Good morning Naruto I trust your ready for your first day?" asked Professor Dumbledore who was uplifted by the blondes energy.
"Oh yeah I can't wait." Naruto answered as he started to pick some bacon off the headmaster plate. "But I'm still not looking forward to history of magic."
"Come now Naruto we have discussed this, you have nothing to fear from any of the Hogwarts ghost." Dumbledore said as he tried to reassured the blonde.
"Headmaster I believe you called Uzumaki for a reason." Interjected McGonagall.
"Ah, yes of course." Dumbledore said before taking a sip from his goblet. "As you know the Dementors will now be stationed around the school so I must ask that you for the time being reframe from you explorations in to the Forbidden Forest and keep your training as close to the castle as possible." At this Naruto froze he didn't think anyone know about his trips into the forest, but luckily for him Dumbledore didn't seem mad at all.
"Alright all stop." said Naruto and after being dismissed he turned and walked back to the Gryffindor table. Along the way he greeted Hagrid who was on his way to the staff table.
"Oh, good Naruto I got your class schedule." said Hermione as she passed him a piece of paper after he had rejoined them.
"So what did Dumbledore want?" Asked Ron.
"Nothing really he just wanted to tell me not to go into the forest until the Dementors are gone from the school." Naruto said as he started to eat.
"Wait Dumbledore knows you go into." - "The forbidden Forest and he's only now tell you to stop." It was the Weasley twins Fred and George who were sitting right by them.
"Doesn't everyone get to go into the forest." Naruto asked not understanding what the big deal was.
"No mate." - "It's called forbidden for a reason." The twins said.
"Oh you mustn't go into the Forbidden Forest anymore Naruto." Hermione said sounding worried.
"Don't worry I already told Dumbledore I wouldn't anymore till the Dementors were going from the school and I never go back on my word." Naruto said With such determination that no one argued the point feather. Soon the Geat Hall started to empty after a few minutes as students getting to head off towards the first lessons
"We better get going divinations all the way up in the North Tower." Ron said has he checked his course schedule. Quickly finishing the breakfast they said goodbye to Fred and George and headed out the Great Hall. As they pass the Slytherin table Naruto saw a large group of them howling with laughter as they pointed at Harry.
The Gryffindors journey through the castle to North Tower would have been a long one. However it was Lucky that Naruto had spent so much time exploring the castle. After taking two staircases The entrance of which head been hidden behind a large tapestry they soon emerged on an unfamiliar landing where there was nothing but a large painting of a bare stretch of grass hanging on the stone wall.
"I think it's this way." said Hermione peering down the empty passage to the right
"We're pretty close now." Naruto said as he walked up to the portrait Harry had been staring at. Ron and Hermione's attention was drawn to the painting were they watched in astonishment as the little knight. He tugged his sword out of its scabbard and began brandishing it violently, hopping up and down in rage but the sword was too long for him a particularly wild swing made him overbalance and he landed face down in the grass.
"Are you all right said Harry moving closer to the picture.
"Get back you scurvy braggart back you rogue." The knight seized his sword again and used it to push himself back up but the blade sank deeply into the grass and though he pulled with all his might he couldn't get it out again. Finally he had to flop back down onto the grass and push up his visor to mop his sweating face.
"Sir Cadogan, I come seeking aid for a most urgent quest. My comrades and I must find the way to the North Tower." said Naruto as his voice took on an air of the theatrics. Which cause Ron and Harry to hide their snickers of laughter.
"Good sir Uzumaki, another quest." the knights rage seemed to vanish instantly He clanked to his feet and shouted.
"Come follow me dear friend and we shall find our goal or else shall perish bravely in the charge." and so the four of them followed the knight as he moved through the paintings on the wall leading them to the North Tower.
"Farewell my comrades in arms If ever you have need of noble heart and steely sinew call upon Sir Cadogan." The little knight called out
'Yeah well call you. muttered Ron as the knight disappeared, after they had finally made it to North Tower. "If we ever need someone mental." At his comment Naruto started to laugh a little.
"I thought you know how to get to North Tower." Hermione said as they climbed the last few steps and emerged onto a tiny empty landing.
"Oh I do, I just think Sir Cadogan is funny." He simply said chuckling sheepishly at Hermione's pointed stair. they didn't have to wait long as soon most of the class had finally arrived. There were no doors off this landing but Ron nudged Harry and pointed at the ceiling where there was a circular trapdoor with a brass plaque on it
"Sibyll Trelawney Divination teacher." Harry read
"How are we supposed to get up there." asked Naruto and as though in answer to his question the trapdoor suddenly opened, and a silvery ladder descended right at Naruto's feet Everyone got quiet
"After you." said Ron grinning so Naruto climbed the ladder first. He emerged into the strangest looking room he had ever seen there where at least twenty small circular tables that were crammed inside it all surrounded by chintz armchairs and fat little poufs. Everything was lit with a dim crimson light the curtains at the windows were all closed and the many lamps were draped with dark red scarves It was stiflingly warm and the fire that was burning under the crowded mantelpiece was giving off a heavy sickly sort of perfume as it heated a large copper kettle. The shelves running around the circular walls were crammed with dusty looking feathers stubs of candles many packs of tattered playing cards countless silvery crystal balls and a huge array of teacups. Harry appeared at Naruto's shoulder as the class assembled around them all talking in whispers.
"Where is she." Ron said A voice came suddenly out of the shadows a soft misty sort of voice.
"Welcome." it said "How nice to see you in the physical world at last." Naruto immediate impression was of a large glittering insect. Professor Trelawney moved into the firelight and they saw that she was very thin her large glasses magnified her eyes to several times their natural size and she was draped in a gauzy spangled shawl innumerable chains and beads hung around her spindly neck and her arms and hands were encrusted with bangles and rings.
"Sit my children, sit." she said and they all climbed awkwardly into armchairs or sank onto poufs Naruto, Harry, Ron, and Hermione sat themselves around the same round table.
"Welcome to Divination. My name is Professor Trelawney, you may not have seen me before I find that descending too often into the hustle and bustle of the main school clouds my Inner Eye." Nobody said anything to this extraordinary pronouncement Professor Trelawney delicately rearranged her shawl and continued.
"you have chosen to study Divination the most difficult of all magical arts I must warn you at the outset that if you do not have the Sight there is very little I will be able to teach you. Books can take you only so far in this field We will be covering the basic methods of Divination this year The first term will be devoted to reading the tea leaves. Next term we shall progress to palmistry
"By the way my dear." she shot suddenly at Parvati Patil "beware a red-haired man." Parvati gave a startled look at Ron who was right behind her, and edged her chair away from him
"In the second term." Professor Trelawney went on. "we shall progress to the crystal ball if we have finished with fire omens, that is. Unfortunately classes will be disrupted in February by a nasty bout of flu I myself will lose my voice and around Easter one of our number will leave us forever." A very tense silence followed this pronouncement but Professor Trelawney seemed unaware of it.
"Now I want you all to divide into pairs. Collect a teacup from the shelf come to me and I will fill it Then sit down and drink, drink until only the dregs remain. Swill these around the cup three times with the left hand then turn the cup upside down on its saucer wait for the last of the tea to drain away then give your cup to your partner to read You will interpret the patterns using pages five and six of Unfogging the Future I shall move among you helping and instructing" Once she had finished giving her instructions everyone stated to move about Naruto and Hermione partnered up and brought there cups of tea back to their table. They both opened their books at pages five and six
"What can you see in mine tea drags." said Hermione flatly, the heavily perfumed smoke in the room was making him feel sleepy and stupid.
"Broaden your minds my dears and allow your eyes to see past the mundane." Professor Trelawney cried through the gloom. Naruto and Hermione tried to see something with in their cups but Naruto couldn't focus and Hermione was reading and rereading Unfogging the future for any sign kind help.
"I'm I supposed to be seeing something?" asked Naruto however at moment their attention was drawn by Professor Trelawney.
"The falcon my dear you have a deadly enemy." Professor Trelawney spoke
"But everyone knows that" said Hermione in a loud whisper Professor Trelawney stared at her.
"Well they do." said Hermione. "Everybody knows about Harry and You Know Who." Harry and Ron stared at her with a mixture of amazement and admiration. They had never heard Hermione speak to a teacher like that before
"You know who? Oh your talking about Voldemort right" said Naruto loudly causing all but Harry to flinch back. Professor Trelawney chose not to reply. She lowered her huge eyes to Harrys cup again and continued to turn it
"The club an attack dear, dear this is not a happy cup" Professor Trelawney continue.
"I thought that was a bowler hat" said Ron sheepishly
"The skull! danger in your path my dear." Everyone was staring transfixed at Professor Trelawney who gave the cup a final turn gasped and then screamed. Professor Trelawney sank into a vacant armchair her glittering hand at her heart and her eyes closed.
"My dear boy it is kinder not to say, no don't ask me." Everyone had got to their feet and slowly they crowded around Harry and Ron's table pressing close to Professor Trelawney's chair to get a good look at Harrys cup.
"My dear." Professor Trelawney's huge eyes opened dramatically, "You have the Grim."
"The what?" asked Naruto looking around he could tell that he wasn't the only one who didn't understand. Harry shrugged at him but nearly everybody else clapped their hands to their mouths in horror.
"The Grim, my dear, the Grim!" cried Professor Trelawney, who looked shocked that Harry hadn't understood. "The giant, spectral dog that haunts churchyards! My dear boy, it is an omen — the worst omen — of death!"
"I don't think it looks like a Grim," Hermione said flatly. Professor Trelawney surveyed Hermione with mounting dislike.
"You'll forgive me for saying so, my dear, but I perceive very little aura around you. Very little receptivity to the resonances of the future
"When you've all finished deciding whether I'm going to die or not!" said Harry, taking even himself by surprise. Now nobody seemed to want to look at him.
"I think we will leave the lesson here for today," said Professor Trelawney in her mistiest voice. "Yes . . . please pack away your things." Silently the class took their teacups back to Professor Trelawney, packed away their books, and closed their bags. Even Ron was avoiding Harry's eyes.
"Don't worry about it to much Harry, back home people tell me I going die all the time and I'm still around." Naruto said jokingly as he slapped Naruto on the back.
"Until we meet again, fair fortune be yours" said Professor Trelawney said faintly. Harry, Ron, Naruto, and Hermione descended Professor Trelawney's ladder and the winding stair in silence, then set off for Professor McGonagall's Transfiguration lesson.
"So… is anyone going to talk about what just happened back there?" Asked Naruto wondering if every class was going to be this intense. Harry, and Naruto chose a seat right at the back of the room, the rest of the class kept shooting furtive glances at the dark haired boy, Harry was so distracted that he hardly heard what Professor McGonagall was telling them about Animagi (wizards who could transform at will into animals), and wasn't even watching when she transformed herself in front of their eyes into a tabby cat with spectacle markings around her eyes
"Wow, that was amazing did you see that Harry." Naruto said out loud amazed at what he had just seen. "Thank you Mr. Uzumaki, but really, what has got into you all today?" Said Professor McGonagall, turning back into herself with a faint pop, and staring around at them all.
"Not that it matters, but that's the first time my transformation's not got applause from a class." Everybody's heads turned toward Harry again, but nobody spoke. Then Hermione raised her hand.
"Please, Professor, we've just had our first Divination class, and we were reading the tea leaves, and —"
"Ah, of course," said Professor McGonagall, suddenly frowning. "There is no need to say any more, Miss Granger. Tell me, which of you will be dying this year?" Everyone stared at her.
"Me," said Harry, finally.
"I see," said Professor McGonagall, fixing Harry with her beady eyes. "Then you should know, Potter, that Sibyll Trelawney has predicted the death of one student a year since she arrived at this school. None of them has died yet. Seeing death omens is her favorite way of greeting a new class. If it were not for the fact that I never speak ill of my colleagues." Professor McGonagall broke off, and they saw that her nostrils had gone white. She went on, more calmly,
"Divination is one of the most imprecise branches of magic. I shall not conceal from you that I have very little patience with it. True Seers are very rare, and Professor Trelawney —" She stopped again, and then said, in a very matter-of-fact tone, "You look in excellent health to me, Potter, so you will excuse me if I don't let you off homework today. I assure you that if you die, you need not hand it in." Hermione and Naruto both laughed. When the Transfiguration class had finished, they joined the crowd thundering toward the Great Hall for lunch.
"Ron cheer up." said Hermione, pushing a dish of stew toward him. "You heard what Professor McGonagall said." Ron spooned stew onto his plate bit stopped before taking a bite.
"Harry," he said in a low serious voice. "you haven't seen a great black dog anywhere have you.?"
"Yeah, I have." said Harry. "I saw one the night I left the Dursleys." Ron let his fork fall with a clatter.
"Probably a stray." said Hermione calmly. Ron you looked at Hermione as though she had gone mad.
"What's the big deal hasn't Harry almost died every year since he's been in Hogwarts, you too included." Naruto said as he took a bite out of his food.
"You two don't know what you're talking about." Ron said starting to get angry. "Grim's scare the living daylights out of most wizards!"
"So do you think you're going to die this year?" Naruto asked has he looked away from the arguing Ron and Hermione.
"What?," Harry asked not expecting that sort of question. "No, no I'm not."
"Well then don't worry about some death oman's." Naruto said and in some odd way Harry did feel better. Just then however Hermione slammed her Arithmancy look down on the table so hard that bits of food flew everywhere.
"If being good at divination means I have to pretend to see death omens in a lump of tea leaves I'm not sure I'll be studying it much longer that lesson was absolute rubbish compared with my Arithmancy class!" She snatched up her bag and stalked away. Taking a few last bites of his food Naruto made to follow. Passing through the Entrance Hall he spotted a mess of bushy brown hair moving out the castle.
"Hermione, wait." Called out Naruto as he ran to catch up to her.
"Oh, Naruto." Said Hermione still sounding a bit flustered
"You ok." Ask Naruto as the two continued to walk down the school grounds making there way towards Hagrid's Hut.
"I'm fine its just this whole Grim business has got Ron acting ridiculous." Hermione said.
"Well people can act that way when their scared, I mean I don't like ghost and I'll do what ever I can to avoid them." Naruto said with a smile as the two continued to walk they fell into a comfortable silence.
Naruto." Hermione suddenly asked. "When we were in divination you said something to Harry. Did you really mean it that people used to tell you such horrible thing." Hermione asked as she looked at the blonde. Naruto know that he had to say something to her but he wasn't supposed to. Dumbledore had told him it was in his best interest to not let everyone know about his past.
"Hermione." He began to say a bit unsure of himself. "There are somethings I can't remember and others I wish I didn't." He finally told her.
"Don't you trust me?" at her dejected look he couldn't help feeling bad. For some reason he was having a hard time saying no she looked at him those chocolate brown eyes of here's.
"Were friends right?" He hoped the answer would be yes. He waited on bated breath for her to answer him
"Of course we are Naruto." Hermione said a little surprised that the blonde didn't think that already. This was a great relief to Naruto hearing she considered him her friend already.
"Great, then I can tell you and Dumbledore won't get mad at me." Naruto said as he grabbed Hermione by the hand as started to leader her a bit passed Hagrid's hut. The gamekeepers home was just on the edge of the Forbidden Forest, quickly moving to the tree line. Hermione was about to ask were he was taking here he stop so that they where hidden from view just behind a large tree next to Hagrid's Hut.
"N-naruto what are you do. . ." But whatever Hermione was going to say was cut off short as Naruto opened the front of his robes and began to unbuttoned the top of his uniform shirt. Hermione not sure of what was going on backed away from the undressing blonde. She only moved a foot before her back hit the tree.
"Here it's easier if I show you." Naruto said still focused on the buttons of his shirt that he failed to notice how red faced Hermione has getting. Finally done he opened the front of the shirt and showed her his scared chest. "The day Dumbledore found me I was bleeding to death because there was a hole in my chest.
"How are you still alive, it not possible." Hermione said as she reached out a shaking hand and tentatively touched the scar on his chest. After a moment Naruto let out a light laugh and realizing what she was doing Hermione quickly withdraw her hand.
"Sorry," She muttered now trying to look anywhere but at Naruto.
"It ok, it just tickled a bit." Naruto said as he started working on fixing his shirt.
"Dumbledore said I should only tell my friends so I'll tell you but you can't tell anyone else, okey." And after receiving a nod of agreement from the bushy haired girl Naruto told her the real story of how he ended up in Hogwarts. Whatever Hermione was expecting it wasn't this, two years of being a witch and having read dozens of magical books on almost every subject could not prepare her for Naruto story.
"After all that I spent the month getting ready." Naruto finally finished finished his story."
"Oh, Naruto that's just awful. How could anyone live like that." Hermione said as she possessed everything. But before Naruto could say more a new voice boomed out getting there attention.
"C'mon now get a move on!" It was Hagrid's voice that was call out. "Got real treat for yeh today Great lesson comin up, everyone here Right follow me!" That's when both teens realized that their Care of Magical Creatures class had already started. Moving out of the trees and circled round the hut and came round the back of the class. As the moved along with the rest of the students Naruto Forr a moment thought that Hagrid was going to lead them into the forest. This would have been amazing, Naruto loved exploding the forest. However Hagrid strolled off around the edge of the trees and five minutes later they found themselves outside a kind of paddock there was nothing in there.
"Everyone gather round the fence here." Hagrid called out "Thats it, make sure ye'h can see now firs thing yeh'll want ter do is open yer books."
"How." said a cold, drawling voice looking over Naruto saw that it was the blonde Slytherin boy that was making fun of Harry during breakfast.
"Eh?" said Hagrid not understanding.
"How do we open our books." Repeated the Slytherin.
"Like this." Naruto called out as he slowly opening the front cover of the book. This got a few laughs from his fellow the Gryffindors. Looking at the copy of The Monster Book of Monsters in everyones hands Naruto saw that they all had them bound.
"Has'n, has'n anyone bin able t'er open their books." said Hagrid looking crestfallen.
"Yeah, I have." called out Naruto as the rest of the class all shook their heads.
"Min show'in them how its do'n Nar'to." Asked Hagrid. Nodding Naruto took Hermiones copy and ripped off the Spellotape that bound it. The book tried to bite him but suddenly gave a low whimper and fell lifeless when Naruto ran a finger along the spine of the book.
"Here you go." Naruto said happily has he handed the girl her book. The rest of the class followed suit and we're able to open their books.
"Righ' then." said Hagrid who seemed to have lost his thread. "So. . .so ye'hve got yer' books an now ye'h need the Magical Creatures. . .Yeah. . .So I'll go an get e'm Hang on." He strode away from them into the forest and out of sight.
"God this place is going to the dogs." said same blonde Slytherin loudly. "That oaf teaching classes my father'll have a fit when I tell him."
"Shut up Malfoy." Harry said and Malfoy was about to say something when a squeal from Lavender Brown who was pointing toward the opposite side of the paddock where every ones attention was drawn. Trotting toward them were a dozen of the most bizarre creatures Naruto had ever seen. They had the bodies hind legs and tails of horses but the front legs wings and heads of what seemed to be giant eagles with cruel steel colored beaks and large brilliantly orange eyes. The talons on their front legs were half a foot long and deadly looking. Each of the beasts had a thick leather collar around its neck which was attached to a long chain and the ends of all of these were held in the vast hands of Hagrid who came jogging into the paddock behind the creatures.
"Gee up there." He roared shaking the chains and urging the creatures toward the fence where the class stood everyone but Naruto drew back slightly as Hagrid reached them and tethered the creatures to the fence.
"Hippogriffs!" Hagrid roared happily waving a hand at them.
"Beautiful, aren they." Naruto could see what Hagrid meant appreciating the hippogriffs gleaming coats changing smoothly from feather to hair each of them a different color stormy gray bronze pinkish roan gleaming chestnut and inky black
"So." said Hagrid rubbing his hands together and looked around.
"If ye'h wan ter come a bit nearer. "Naruto moved closer when no one seemed to want to. that is till Harry Ron and Hermione approached the fence cautiously so that the four where now standing together
"Now fir's thing ye'h gotta know abo'u hippogriffs is they proud." said Hagrid. "Easily offended hippogriffs are. Dont never insult one cause it might be the last thing yeh do." Naruto looked round and saw that Malfoy and his two big ugly friends weren't listening. they were talking in an undertone to each other.
"Yeh always wait fer the hippogriff t'er make the firs move." Hagrid continued. "Its polite see. Ye'h walk toward him and ye'h bow an ye'h wait If he bows back ye'hre allowed t'er touch him. If he doesn bow then get away from him sharpish cause those talons hurt. Right who wants ter go first." Most of the class backed farther away in answer Even Harry Ron and Hermione had misgivings. The hippogriffs were tossing their fierce heads and flexing their powerful wings they didn't seem to like being tethered like this.
"I'll do it." said Naruto as he hopped over the paddock fence in one go.
"Good man." Naruto roared Hagrid.
"Right then lets see how ye'h get on with Buttercup." he untied one of the chains pulled the chestnut hippogriff away from its fellows and slipped off its leather collar. The class on the other side of the paddock seemed to be holding its breath. Malfoys eyes were narrowed jealously however once Naruto started to move forward. Once he was about a foot from the hippogriff he stopped and bow low and wait. A few seconds later the chestnut hippogriff bents it front legs and bow back in return.
From the other side of the paddock Hermione released a breath she was holding the rest of the Gryffindors cheered.
"Y'ur did it Nar'to I expect she'll let you ri'd h'r." Hagrid said and not need any further encouragement Naruto hop onto the back of Buttercup. It was strange she had never ridden anything like this before, but after some adjustment he was able to comfortably place his legs just behind her wing joints.
"Alright let's see what you can do." Naruto said as Buttercup took off with great speed. She flew him twice before zigzagging through some near by trees, all the while Naruto was whooping and shouting out in enjoy. Till finally coming back around the paddock they leaned back. Naruto felt a heavy thud as the four ill-assorted feet hit the ground. He just managed to hold on and push himself straight again.
"Good work Naruto." roared Hagrid as everyone except Malfoy Crabbe and Goyle cheered
"Okay who else wants a go." Emboldened by Naruto's success the rest of the class climbed cautiously into the paddock Hagrid untied the hippogriffs one by one, and soon people were bowing nervously all over the paddock. Ron and Hermione practiced on Buttercupt while Harry and Neville worked on the black hippogriff. Naruto looked around as saw Malfoy and his two friends had taken over a gray hippogriff. He had bowed to Malfoy who was now patting his beak looking disdainful. Malfoy drawled loud enough for Naruto to hear him.
"I knew it must have been easy if that Uzumaki could do it. I bet you're not dangerous at all are you." He said to the hippogriff. Naruto looked on as Malfoy continued to pet the hippogriff and uneasy feeling growing in the pit of his stomach.
"Are you, you great ugly brute." It happened in a flash of steely talons and black robs. Malfoy let out a highpitched scream and next moment Hagrid was wrestling Buckbeak back into his collar as he strained to get at Malfoy who lay curled in the grass blood falling over his robes.
"l'm dying Malfoy yelled as the class panicked. "Im dying look at me Its killed me." Malfoy kept on yelling out there was another highpitched screm from one of the girl and slowing opening his eyes. Malfoy saw Naruto been standing over him arms out starched as he had pushed the Slytherin out of the way from the angry hippogriff. Hagrid who had gone very white moved forward to check on Naruto. While Malfoy had one small cut on his arm Naruto was sporting a large gashes across his back.
"Someone help me, got'ta get him out'ta here." Hermione ran to hold open the gate as Hagrid lifted Naruto easily. As they passed the class saw that there where several long deep cuts on Naruto's back. Blood splattered the grass and Hagrid ran with him up the slope toward the castle. A very shaken the Care of Magical Creatures class followed at a walk. Thanks to Hagrid's size they were able to reach the hospital wing in record time. By the time Harry Ron and Hermione reached the hospital wing they found Madam Pomfrey bent over a bed complaining while a shirtless Naruto apologized to her.
"Let this be the last time you do something this reckless first that hole in your chest and now jumping in front of a raging hippogriff." Madame Pomfrey said with a stern look on her face as she handed Naruto a bubbling purple colored potion. While she continued to wave her wand over his back.
"I'm sorry Granny Pomfrey but I had to do something." said Naruto sheepishly, as his words Madame Pomfrey's face softened a little.
"Naruto you're alright." called out Hermione. She and Ron had been standing on the other side of the hospital bed certains.
"Hey you guys what are you doing here?" Asked Naruto confused by their arrival as he drew that certains back.
"We came to see if you were alright." Said Harry.
"Really?" Naruto asked happy that his fellow Gryffindors cared enough about him to check if he was alright. Naruto's excitement about having people care about him being injured caused a sad frown to spread across Hermione's face.
"How are you healed already and where's Hagrid?" asked Ron as he watched the blonde start to out his shirt back on.
"I naturally heal quickly," and quickly turning around Naruto showed him his back where thanks to Madame Pomfrey and his healing the gashes had not been reduced near thin pink lines. "Hagrid he went to Dumbledore's office." Naruto told them as he put on his robes.
"Come on you guys I think it's almost dinner time Said Naruto as he thanked Madam Pomfrey and lead the way out of the hospital wing Naruto.
"Are you sure you alright?" asked Hermione who was still not convinced. Harry and Ron seemed to except Naruto's explanation. However knowing what Hermione did about Naruto's life caused her to worry about the blonde and his disregard for his own safety.
"Why did you have to go and save that little git Malfoy for." asked Ron "if you ask me should have let that hippogriff finish him off."
"Ronald." Hermione said scolding at him.
"What?" Ron said incredulously "Oh, come off it Hermione you know Im right right Harry." and looking over Naruto saw that Harry to was nodding his head. Naruto just shrugged his shoulder sure Malfoy was a jerk, but he hadn't been the first jerk Naruto I'd ever met in his life. They were among the first to reach the Great Hall at dinnertime hoping to see Hagrid, but he wasn't there.
"They wouldn't fire him would they?"set Hermione anxiously not touching her dinner.
"They'd better not." said Ron who wasn't eating either. Harry was watching the Slytherin table. A large group was huddled together in deep conversation. Harry was sure they were cooking up their own version of how Malfoy got injured.
"I doubt it, I mean dont students get hurt here all the time." Naruto said as he took a bite out of his food.
"Naruto!" Hermione said incredulously.
"He's got a point Hermione." Harry said
"Wellyou can't say it wasn't an interesting first day back." said Ron gloomily. they went up to the crowded Gryffindor common room after dinner and tried to do the homework Professor McGonagall had given them but all four of them kept breaking off and glancing out the tower window.
"there's a light on in Hagrid's window."Harry said suddenly, Ron looked at his watch.
"if we hurry we could go down and see him still quite early. . . ."
"I don't know,"Hermione says slowly and Harry saw her glancing at him.
"I'm allowed to walk across the grounds," Harry said pointedly. "Sirius Black hasn't gotten past the Dementors yet, has he?"
"Who is Sirius Black?" Naruto sent a questioning look at Hermione but looked to Harry unsure if she should say anything.
So they put their things away and headed out of the portrait home glad to meet nobody on their way to the front doors as they weren't entirely sure they were supposed to be out.The grass was still wet and looked almost black in the twilight when they reached Hagrid's Hut they not and a voice growled, "C'mon."
Hagrid was sitting in his short sleeves at his scrubbedwooden table his borehound fang had his head in Hagrid's lap one look told them that Hagrid had been drinking a lot there was a pewter tankard almost as big as a bucket in front of him and he seemed to be having difficulty getting them into focus.
"Spect it's a record,"he said thickly when he recognized them. "Don't reckon they've ever had a teacher who lasted on'y a day before."
"you haven't been fired, Hagrid!"gasped Hermione.
"Not yet," said Hagrid miserably taking a huge gulp of whatever was in the tankard. "But 's only a matter o' time."
"Malfoy's faking it" Harry said at once. "Madam Pomfrey can mend anything she regrew half my bones last year looking Naruto he left the hospital in less than an hour. trust my voice to milk it for all it's worth."
"School gov'nors have bin told, o' course," Hagrid said miserably. "They reckon I started too big. Shoulda left hippogriffs for later. . . . done flubberworms or summat. . . . Jus' thought it'd make a good firs' lesson. . . . 'S all my fault. . . ."
"it's all Malfoy's fault Hagrid!" Hermione said earnestly.
"We're witnesses," said Naruto. "you said hippogriffs attack if you insult them. I saw when Malfoy angered the hippogriff." At this tears leaked out of the crinkled corners of Hagrid beetle-black eyes.
"I think you've had enough to drink, Hagrid." said Hermione firmly as she took the tankard from the table and went outside to empty it.
"Ar, maybe she's right." Hagrid said just then he stopped it and stared at Harry as though he'd only just realized he was there.
"WHAT D'YEH THINK YOU'RE DOIN' ,EH?" he roared so suddenly that they jumped a foot in the air. "YEH"RE NOT TO GO WANDERIN' AROUND AFTER DARK, HARRY! AN' YOU THREE! LETTIN' HIM!" Hagrid strode over to Harry grabbed his arm and pulled him to the door.
"C'mon!" Hagrid said angrily. "I'm takin yee all back up t'er school. an don't let me catch yeh walkin' down t'er see me after dark again. I'm not worth it." As Ron, Hermione, and Naruto ran to keep up with Hagrid's long strides. Naruto turned to the other two and asked.
"Does this have to do with Sirius Black?"
