Jake breathed in heavily as his hands gripped the railings. He looked up, seeing Amy stand at the end of the walkway. The rest of the squad watching on from the hospital room.
It had now been six months since Jake's life had changed. It was nearly Christmas time. Jake stopped and whined, looking down at his feet. Sharon was right there. "Come on Jake. Few more steps." Jake looked at her, before he began moving, his feet shuffling on the mat. He wore a harness around his body to stop him from falling. He looked at Amy and grinned.
"Amy! Amy... w.. walk!" Amy grinned at him.
"You're doing so great Jake, come on you can do it." Jake concentrated as his brain was finally making the connections into moving his legs. Finally he made it. Amy laughed and hugged him. The squad cheered for him. Jake was helped into a wheelchair by Sharon, breathing heavily.
"Oh Jake, you did so well!" Sharon said, wiping his face. Jake blinked heavily, it had exhausted him, but it was his first time walking in six months. Sharon walked over and got a oxygen tank, setting it up on the back of the chair for Jake, putting the tubes across his face so it would help with his breathing. Holt smiled at him. "Well done Jake, we are all so proud of you, but I think now he has to rest."
The squad agreed and said their goodbyes to Jake, who was nodding off to sleep. Amy stayed for a while, before also leaving. Sharon put Jake to bed.
The next day, he was having a a visit out form the hospital. Tony was with him today. Jake looked around as they left and went down the street, rocking back and fourth in his chair. "G.. Go?" Tony smiled.
"It's a surprise, but nearly there... Here we go."
Jake gasped and gave an excited cry, his whole body shaking from side to side. Tony grinned. "I take it you're happy?"
"Ye.. YESH!" Jake grinned and looked at the Zoo in front of him. After paying for tickets, they entered. Jake didn't know where to look; the gorillas, the birds, the funny meerkats. He pointed at the lions, placing his hand on the glass. Tony knelt in front of him
"Hey buddy, you know what that animal is?"
Jake paused and frowned, thinking, before he spoke. "L.. Lie... Li-li-lion!" Tony grinned at him.
"Good!"
Jake smiled. The best part was though when the staff allowed him to get extra close with the penguins. Tony helped him out the chair and sat him on the floor. Jake gasped and tried to keep still as the birds came over. He scrunched his face up as one of them settled down onto his lap, containing his excitement. He eventually giggled, pushing his head into Tony's shoulder.
Eventually, after a few hours, they left the zoo, after Jake had brought himself the biggest penguin he could buy of course. After arriving back at the hospital and proudly showing off his new found acquisition, who he named Terry, he was put to bed for rest.
A while later, he woke up and looked around, a bit confused. He gave a cry, reaching over and grabbing the blanket. He looked over at the walker the staff had dropped off for him. He licked his lips and thought for a moment.
Pushing himself up, he sat still for a moment, watching his legs hang from the bed. He whined and looked around, before he started to lower himself onto the ground. His legs gave way and he fell, bringing the table down with him. The noise brought a few nurses in as Sharon was tending to another patient.
"Jake!" A nurse cried, going into the room with another, before gently helping him up and into the bed. Jake tossed and turned, crying out. The nurses tried to stop him. "Jake, stop it! Go get me a sedative." One of the nurses hurried out. Sharon came in. "What is going on?" She looked at Jake and walked over.
"Now Jake, you stop this right now!" Jake cried out and rolled himself onto his front, punching the pillow. Sharon motioned towards the other nurse, who moved away before sitting on the bed, rubbing Jake's back when he stopped crying.
"Come on sweetie, I know it's hard."
"I...I WALK!"
Sharon sighed, before speaking. "Jake, you only learned to walk, you can't run yet and that is no reason to injure yourself or scare my staff, now stop!" Jake sniffed and mewled, but settled, turning himself over. Sharon looked at him. "Are you done?" Jake grunted, but looked down.
"Alright."
Jake pouted and looked at her. "Hm... walk... now." Sharon smiled and gently rubbed the hair out of his eyes.
"I know you do darling, but you just got to wait, you'll get there, and one day I'll be watching you walk out of here, tall as any king." Jake looked at her.
"Sca..sca..rr..red.."
Sharon stood and tucked him back in. "I know you are scared, but six months ago, you couldn't even hold your head up by yourself, now look. Staring to walk, talk. It takes time, but you will get there and I promise you, I will always be with you. Okay?"
"Ye... yesshh."
Sharon smiled and put on a soft light to help him sleep. "Good, now get some sleep. Tomorrow is a whole new adventure for you." Jake blinked and rubbed his eyes. "Oww..."
"Stop rubbing your eyes mister. Sleep." She gave him a kiss on his head, before the nurses left. Jake sighed and turned over, running his hands over of the bedsheets, before he eventually fell off to sleep.
A while later, Holt was looking at the report from Sharon and had to smile a bit. "Good on you son."
