Remember Me

Chapter Five: Dean Winchester Knocking

...

..

...

"Hello?" The husky voice spoke again. Ben couldn't move. He felt frozen in that very place. His heart raced as Dean's voice filled his ears. Ben couldn't even feel like he could speak. "Alright, if you're not gonna talk, I'm just gonna hang up."

"Wait!" Ben said quickly. "Is this Dean W?" Ben didn't know what the W had stood for, he knew it was the initial of his last name, but he had no idea what his last name could have been. He figured it he said the letter, maybe the man on the other end of the phone call would know.

"This is Dean Winchester, who is this?"

"Do you know of a woman by the name of Lisa Braeden?"

Everything went silent.

Dean kept the phone to his ear as he heard that all too familiar name. He had to admit, hearing it for the first time in years had stung. He politely asked Castiel to scrub their minds so they wouldn't remember Lisa being possessed and then being stabbed. They wouldn't remember him. He fell silent as he stepped on the brakes and began pulling his precious Impala to the side of the road. Sam looked at his brother bewildered as Dean hurriedly got out of the car.

"Uh, hello?" Ben repeated.

"Yeah, I-I do." Dean stammered as he tried to recover his thoughts. "Is she okay?" His heart raced as every bad thought went through his mind. Had she died? Did she get into an accident? Was Ben okay? He didn't want to think about it, but with his line of work and all the death he had seen, he couldn't help it.

"She's fine." Ben responded. "My name is Ben Braeden-"

"Ben..." Dean whispered as Ben spoke.

"I was in a car accident and I-"

"Say no more. I'm on my way." Dean said, quickly hanging up the phone and climbing back into the car. Sam still eyed his brother with a bewildered expression.

"Is everything alright?" He questioned.

"No." Dean mumbled as he turned the car around. The wheels squealed against the pavement as he rushed back in the direction of Cicero.

Ben eyed his phone as Dean suddenly hung up. "That was weird." He murmured.

"What was weird?" Lisa asked as she came into the living room, holding two plates full of dinner. Ben jumped at the sudden sound of his mother's voice and quickly shoved the picture in his hand into his pocket.

"Oh nothing, just saw some strange pictures of you." He said with a chuckle. "Things were weird back in the dinosaur age." He joked. Lisa laughed as she handed her son one of the plates and sat next to him on the couch.

"You think you're so funny, don't you? Well, guess what. There will come a day when your kids will call you old." Ben chuckled weakly as he picked up some food with his fork and slowly shoveled into his mouth.

.

That night, while Ben and Lisa slept soundly, Dean and Sam were on the road. Sam was dozing off in the passenger seat as Dean took another swig of an energy drink as he drove. They were on their way to another town to get a motel room for the night, but once Ben had called, Dean had only one thing on his mind: getting to Ben and Lisa. He wasn't sure if there was some miracle Ben and Lisa had remembered him, but he was excited, but nervous either way. He was actually frightened for what was to come. He tried to talk himself out of driving at several points. He would tell himself to pull off, get a room, and sleep it off but he couldn't. He knew deep down he wouldn't be able to think of anything other than that phone call.

A fluttering sound emerged in the backseat and Dean looked in the rearview mirror to see Castiel sitting neatly. He drew in a deep breath as he tried to find the words to say. Dean wanted to ask him if he had any idea what was going on with Ben and Lisa, but he couldn't find the words.

"They're okay, Dean." Castiel finally said.

"That's fantastic." Dean said sarcastically. "Ben was in a car accident."

"I know." Castiel stated. "Believe it or not, I've been watching them for you."

"You have?"

"Yes, but I knew if I were to say anything, you would be very upset." Castiel drew in a deep breath. "Anyway, I was there when he got into the accident. He has a skull fracture."

"What?!" Dean exclaimed. Sam jolted awake at the sound of Dean's voice. "Sorry, Sam."

"What's going on?" Sam asked tiredly as he sat up in his seat, rubbing his eyes.

"It's about Ben and Lisa." Castiel stated.

"That's who was on the phone?" Sam asked. Dean rolled his eyes. "I thought they didn't remember you."

"They don't." Dean pronounced.

"I was actually getting to that part." Castiel said. Dean and Sam both turned their heads to look at him. "With his skull fracture, very minor by the way, it unlocked the memories."

"I thought you scrubbed their minds clean?" Dean asked, growing irritated with the angel in the backseat.

"I did. The problem is, Ben was in that accident. Being in that accident and getting that skull fracture opened up memories that I made him forget."

"Does Lisa remember?" Dean asked in a gentle, sorrowful voice.

"No." Dean's face drooped as Castiel replied.

"Okay, so, Ben remembers Dean?" Sam questioned, trying to get clarity of the situation.

"Not entirely." Castiel answered. "He is having visions of Dean. Not necessarily remembering him, but he knows Dean had a life with them at one point."

"What time is it?" Dean asked, changing the subject. Sam moved his jacket away to look at his watch.

"3:30 a.m." Sam said with a groan. Dean flashed a wicked smile in Sam's way before pressing his foot harder on the pedal. The Impala gradually sped up down the road.

.

Morning came around and Ben had just woken up for the day. He wrapped himself up in a blanket and made himself comfortable on the couch as Lisa hurriedly got ready for work. He watched her in enjoyment as she raced around the house in a panic. Once she had all her belongings, she leaned down to kiss Ben on his head.

"I'm going to work. I'll be home in a few hours." She stated before rushing out the door. He clicked on some TV and watched it peacefully until he heard the sound of a car outside his home. He paused his show and listened carefully. A car door slammed shut and his heart raced. Was it Dean? He could barely hear anything over the pounding of his heart and the ringing in his ears. His body trembled with excitement and nervousness.

Then, everything stopped. His heart slowed down, almost to the point where it felt like it had stopped beating.

Three knocks.

All he could hear were three knocks at his door.
