Some of the conversations here are pulled right from the manga. I am following the same arcs as the manga, but Kiyoko will have her own original moments in it. For example, while Itadori is with Junpei, I have something else planned for her to do, so that way we don't jump right into the Goodwill event.
Btw shout out to DragonRider247! Thank you so much for putting such a nice comment! It made my day! :D
Kiyoko fell into step with Inumaki, she nudged him with her elbow, calling his attention. He raised his eyebrows signifying a silent "what?" The second years had assembled into a small group, currently on their way to meet the first years. They had planned to greet the newcomer, making sure to give their introductions, then go out to do some training practice.
"Wanna train together today?" Kiyoko asked. While the two hadn't gotten along when they had first met, they now often hung out and trained with each other.
He nudged her back, but harder. Shooting her a quick thumbs up to which Kiyoko smiled at.
The group now approached the steps that led into the school. Sitting on them were who she recognized as Megumi, previously meeting him with Gojo when she had not yet attended Jujutsu High, and near him was a girl with short brown hair. Kiyoko immediately lamented upon seeing their solemn faces. She remembered being told that one of the first years had died in a mission against a special grade curse. Although they had only known him for a short period of time, it seemed they had grown close.
"Man it's hot!"
"I wonder when we'll get our summer uniforms."
"Sheesh, you're more moody than usual Megumi. What is this a funeral?" Maki commented on Megumi's dull tone. Kiyoko sucked in a breath at Maki's comment. While Maki tended to be more honest and bold with her words, she wasn't an insincere person. It was unlike her to make such a comment when their classmate had just died.
"Maki-" Kiyoko started, feeling a wave of second embarrassment for her friend. How had no one told her such an important event had happened?
"Zen'in senpai," Even Megumi seemed taken aback by Maki's directness.
"Don't you dare call me by my last-" Panda interrupted Maki calling her name a couple of times before she could embarrass herself any further.
"He really did die. It happened yesterday! A first year boy!" Panda half whispered, although everyone could still hear him.
"Fish flakes!" Inumaki added in agreement.
Maki clenched her jaw, embarrassment seeping into her "It's a little late now. Now I look like a cold hearted demon!"
"Well you pretty much are!"
"Tuna tuna!"
Kiyoko gave a little smile, trying her best not to laugh "you know… out of all the criticisms you could have chosen, why one about death?"
Maki shot her a look to which Kiyoko shrunk back to; Maki had one of the most intimidating glares. Kiyoko moved away from the trio as they began to fall into an argument about what Panda had meant about Maki actually being a demon. Sliding over to where Megumi and the other girl sat, Kiyoko gave a small wave as a greeting.
"Sorry about them" Kiyoko gave a little laugh, "we're not always…" she looked back at her classmates. It seemed that Maki was currently trying to strangle Panda as Inumaki tried to pull her away. "This chaotic?"
"I don't mean to be rude…" The girl with the short hair began, "but who are you guys?"
Of course, the second years had one job to perform: introduce themselves. But they had gotten so easily distracted that they failed at even that simple of a task. What seniors they were.
"Our school's upperclassman" Megumi started before Kiyoko had a chance to introduce herself.
"We're the year above you. I'm Kiyoko Haya by the way, but just call me by my first name." After the separation of her family, among other things, Kiyoko preferred if she was just addressed by her first name.
"Nobara Kugisaki" the girl introduced herself while remaining focused on the fighting second years. Kiyoko wondered if she found them amusing or if she was just disappointed in their childish behavior.
"I already know Megumi, we've met a couple times before," Kiyoko nodded a greeting to the boy who just gave a slight nod back. Megumi was just as gloomy and emotionless as she remembered. Gojo used to make frequent stops by Megumi's home with Kiyoko and Milo. Kiyoko had gotten to know Megumi and his half-sister when Gojo had invited them all together to lunch. Milo and Megumi would just stare at each other while Tsumiki and Kiyoko would chat away about the struggles of raising younger brothers. She had been saddened to hear what had happened to his sister; it had been ages since they had last spoken.
"I guess I should introduce the others since it seems that they're too occupied to do it themselves at the moment." Kiyoko proceeded to introduce each one of her classmates, giving a short description of each person. When she was finished, she turned back to Kugisaki and Megumi. "I didn't add Yuta, but he's overseas right now. So you probably won't see him for a while."
"He's the only one I can respect." Megumi sighed as if he were disappointed in the fact that he even had to say that.
"Are you going to elaborate on the Panda? Or is he just, you know, a panda?" Kiyoko ignored Kugisaki's question as she was more focused on Megumi's previous statement.
"What? Why don't you respect me?" Kiyoko wanted to hear whatever excuse he managed to come up with. She was a good student. She studied, did her assignments, was a good fighter, and accomplished her missions efficiently. Sure, sometimes she was disorganized or easily confused, but besides that, she was a great senior!
"You're an accomplice to Inumaki's pranks," Megumi stated as if it were obvious.
To be honest, Kiyoko was slightly offended, "when have you ever seen me contribute to any one of those idiotic pranks?" Ripped off from some youtube video he had found, Inumaki liked to play pranks on different classmates, sometimes with Gojo. They rarely ever succeeded, and they often left the one pranked annoyed and angry. However, despite their failures, they managed to leave both Inumaki and Gojo dying of laughter.
"You hype him up." Hype him up? Okay maybe she did send him a video or two to carry out, but they were only to be used against Gojo! Was that really enough to lose his respect? Before she could defend herself further, Panda stepped in.
"Sorry about this, especially during this sad time." Well with the way he put it, it didn't seem like he was taking it seriously. "But we want you guys to join us in the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event."
Kugisaki looked slightly confused. "Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event? What's that?" She asked.
Megumi stood up from his spot on the entrance steps. "It's a goodwill event with the other jujutsu school in Kyoto. But I thought only the second and third years get to participate?"
Kiyoko shook her head, "this year is different."
"That idiot third year is suspended right now. Since they're not enough people, you guys get to participate." Kiyoko hadn't ever asked why he had been suspended, she supposed she would need to ask Maki about that later.
"What do we even do in the event? Play Smash bros?" Kugisaki asked. Kiyoko stole a quick glance at Inumaki who looked back at her. To them, Super Smash Bros was a seriously competitive game that usually ended up in a giant argument in the middle of the night. The fact that Kugisaki had thought the goodwill event was some kind of gaming event made Kiyoko and Inumaki silently laugh.
Panda went on to explain how the event was organized. Basically, it was a two day event used to evaluate and show off individual skills. It pinned Kyoto against Tokyo, so it often ended up in individual fights against sorcerers. No killing was allowed, but that didn't mean that you couldn't go full out and seriously injure others.
"Do we have time? We're low on Jujutsu sorcerers right?" Kugisaki asked once Panda and Maki had finished their explanations.
"Tons of curses are being manifested right now" Kiyoko explained, "due to everyone's winter and spring depression." If Kiyoko didn't have a solid control on her cursed energy output, she would have probably contributed to the influx of curses. The first day it had been sunny and above sixty, she had felt ten times happier, and she even threw on a pair of shorts, despite it not being that warm.
"It's kind of like busy season right now," Panda added. Kiyoko nodded, that was a good way to put it.
"Sometimes it's busy all year. But it'll probably calm down a little though." Maki had a point. Last year had been a particularly rough year. Kiyoko had gone on many missions involving simple curses who were born out of human depression for the colder weather. While one singular one was easy to defeat, being grade four or even lower, the more there were, the more technical and efficient your moves had to be in order to not waste energy.
"You're in right?" Maki asked. Kiyoko looked at the first years, they didn't even stop to think.
"We're in!" They said in unison. Good. Kiyoko thought. It was going to be fun training alongside them. She was curious to know how they each used their cursed techniques.
"But if I think either the training or the event is pointless, I'm out." Kiyoko smiled at Kugisaki. She was sure that was never going to happen. With Jujutsu sorcerers, nothing was ever pointless and nothing was ever dull. If there were moments like that, then it was a clear indicator you weren't challenging yourself or that the world had suddenly gone peaceful, which was impossible.
"Oh? I guess I shouldn't have to hold back then. Wouldn't want to make this pointless for myself either." Kiyoko shot them intense gazes.
Panda laughed. Their greenness was evident by their bold statements. They had been on one mission, sure it was against a special grade, but that didn't make them superior or stronger than their seniors. "It should be fun putting you guys in your place then."
"Fish flakes" Inumaki agreed.
"Let's see what you guys can do then. Let's get changed then I'll meet you guys by the training fields." Maki turned around, leading the group back to their dorms.
Standing in a pair of athletic shorts and an old worn out tee-shirt, Kiyoko flicked her wrist, concentrating on her output of cursed energy so she could produce a simple throwing knife. From her spot on the grass, once she had produced one, she threw it at a nearby tree. Her objective was to focus on one of its leaves and pierce directly through one of them. Through aim training, Kiyoko could also practice how quickly she could produce objects. She wanted production time to increase, but, at the same time, she wanted to make sure the quality didn't decrease. It was difficult to balance cursed energy output while managing cursed energy concentration.
"Where's-" Kiyoko threw one of her knives, it landed directly in the middle of a large green leaf, taking it down to the ground before disappearing. All that was left was a small hole in the leaf. "Megumi?" Kiyoko could hear the screams of Panda and Kugisaki chasing each other on the field. It seemed like they were getting along fine.
Maki looked around irritably, "I don't know, but he's wasting time." She crossed her arms before huffing to herself, "didn't he say that he didn't want to waste time?"
Kiyoko despawned her weapons, taking a place on the grass. She shrugged, "maybe he had to take a shit." Unable to control himself, Inumaki exploded into laughter, shoving Kiyoko as if to say what the hell. Maki wanted to be disappointed in Kiyoko's childish behavior, but even she found herself silently chuckling
"What! I'm serious!" It could be a legit reason.
"What are you guys talking about?" Part of Megumi sounded tired and the other part sounded hesitant as if he was unsure he really wanted to know.
"You're late Megumi!" Maki had managed to put on a serious face, "Where were you?"
Megumi seemed taken aback by all the stares he was receiving "Does it really matter?" They all shrugged, another mystery for another day then.
"Zen'in senpai, Kiyoko senpai," Kiyoko found herself faltering slightly at Megumi's sudden serious tone. Megumi always spoke seriously, yet this time was different. This time Megumi seemed troubled by something.
"As a jujutsu sorcerer, what kind of people do you want to save?" It was such an innocent and simple question. However, the answer could reveal a lot about a person, depending on how they answered.
"Huh? I don't think about it."
Kiyoko shifted around in her spot, trying to come up with the words that would best express how she felt.
"I supposed I'm like Maki. In the moment, I don't think about it. Whoever is in trouble, I will try my best to rescue." Kiyoko looked right into Megumi's eyes, making sure he knew she was serious. She wondered if how he felt was due to the incident that involved the other first year. "But if you asked me about anyone who was evil, I guess it would have to depend on what they've done and who they've hurt. That might be selfish of me. I mean who am I to decide who is worth or able of being redeemed or rescued? So the short answer would be: I don't think about it, it's based on whatever is going on in the moment." Kiyoko sighed, "It's just one of the many difficult questions we as sorcerers have to answer."
"FUSHIGURO!" A shout from the field, snapped the students out of their thinking.
"What're you doing over there?! Conducting an interview!" Panda was flinging Kugisaki around in circles around the field. You know, Kiyoko wasn't sure what exactly he was doing, but she admired Kugisaki's ability to be able to withstand it.
"Trade places with me! This uniform is a pain! I'm going to buy a cute tracksuit instead!" Despite her being far away from everyone, her cries carried across the field.
Megumi and Maki turned to face the duo. Now, Kugisaki was being flung away from Panda.
"What are those two even doing?"
"You guys are weak in combat."
Maki turned back toward Megumi, flipping her staff over with ease. "First try to win against me." She hadn't finished fully answering his question. After hearing Kiyoko's response, she felt responsible for providing him with an equally thorough answer. "Then we'll talk."
While Kiyoko wanted to stay and watch, she knew she had to do some of her own combat training.
"Inumaki" she called for the white haired boy who also seemed invested in the fight that was about to go down. He turned his head towards her, throwing it up slightly, asking a "what's up."
Kiyoko pointed to the farther end of the field, "let's go."
The two walked in silence only the crunch of grass could be heard. Kiyoko was not talkative. She preferred letting the others speak while she would sit and listen. However, that was impossible to do here as Inumaki was unable to speak in full sentences.
Although it was a short walk, Kiyoko found herself wanting to break the silence.
"It's really nice out." It was a poor way to jump into conversation, but at least it was something.
Inumaki turned his head toward Kiyoko, his eyes widened slightly but then he just nodded. That's what I thought, didn't grab his attention at all.
"Um, I was thinking about practicing knife skills? Is that okay?"
Inumaki nodded again, "salmon."
Maybe I'm just boring. Kiyoko wondered. "I'm thinking about asking Gojo for a mission, you know, to get extra practice."
Sticking his hands in his pockets, he nodded once again before looking out to the side, towards the woods. Kiyoko narrowed her eyes; so much for a conversation. She wasn't sure why she was getting so frustrated about something that obviously wasn't his fault. Perhaps she had thought he would pull out his phone; it's what they would usually do when they wanted to talk to each other.
She sighed, rubbing her face a couple of times. Once she had collected herself, she pulled out her phone, waving it at him."You have a phone right? Why don't we just talk through text?" Kiyoko watched as he dug his hands in his pocket, pulling them back up to reveal that he was empty handed: he hadn't brought his phone with him. All the scenarios that Kiyoko had conjured up, vanished. Inumaki was unresponsive as there was no other way for him to communicate.
Fishing her phone from her back pocket, Kiyoko handed it over. The boy took it, quickly opening the notes app and typing away.
Left my phone in my dorm. That was stupid of me. She read once he handed it back.
"Yeah seriously." His only way of fully communicating, and he had forgotten it.
Training in the same place?
"By the tree, yes." It was a spot Kiyoko had chosen. Away from everyone, it was quiet and offered privacy.
Nice. Oh by the way…
Kiyoko raised an eyebrow, "yeah?'
That mission that Gojo offered, can I join too?
Kiyoko smiled, "guess I'll have to tell him to give us a higher grade curse then."
Kiyoko watched as the knife she produced came peeling off her arm, by her wrist, before slipping directly into her hand.
"Remember, in order to prevent my weapon from disappearing, you need to supply it with a constant flow of energy," Kiyoko cautioned Inumaki. The two stood in the shade under a large oak tree.
"If I vary the concentration of cursed energy in my weapon, I change its durability and strength, that's part of my technique. But if you change your concentration output, you may just end up destroying it." Because of her technique, Kiyoko was responsible for the quality and design of the weapon. Everyone else who tried to wield them, well they were responsible for keeping the item running. Sort of like supplying a car with gas.
"Salmon!" Inumkai flipped the small knife in the air. It wasn't their first time training together, but Kiyoko continued to remind him of the details of her technique. Sometimes Inumaki could be forgetful.
"Alright then, ready?" She took a couple of steps back, situating her knife so it was angled in front of her, by her chest.
Inumaki nodded. An imaginary clock ticked down. Only their faint breaths could be heard, simultaneously on their third breath, they charged at each other.
Inumaki was not a fighter. To be honest, there was no reason he needed to be. His cursed technique didn't involve it, yet he was aware that despite that fact, it was important that he knew basic combat skills. That's where Kiyoko came into play. She had offered him to train with him after working together to complete a mission. Although she had much more experience, he still enjoyed every moment of their sparring. While her reflexes were incredible and her accuracy was pinpoint accurate, her movements were slow. That's where Inumaki overpowered her, that's where he beat her.
Kiyoko charged forward. By step two, she threw her knife. Inumaki jumped to the left, watching it as it flew by, an inch away from his face. After removing his gaze from the object, he looked forward. However, Kiyoko was missing. Inumaki had trained enough times with her to know that she was going for his legs. He prepared himself to jump up, so he could avoid her incoming kick. However, what he had failed to realize was that when Kiyoko had thrown her knife, she had caught him so off guard that when jumped to the left to dodge, he had applied all his weight on his right leg to keep him steady. It was impossible to jump now as he was totally unbalanced. So, he did the next best thing, he relaxed his body, letting her kick allow him to fall to the ground.
Inumaki brought his hands up, preparing himself to be met with her face. He expected Kiyoko to be right there, trying to disarm him of his knife. Freezing and preparing for Kiyoko's incoming attack, was Inumaki's first mistake. When she fought, Kiyoko allowed her fighting to follow a loose back bone, there was little structure or routine to her fighting style. Kiyoko fought following the motions and actions of the fight. She based her decisions on what she felt like in the moment, as did all fighters. However, it was different. She fought in the moment in that she threw in moves that seemed hard to follow based on what was going on. If one were to go left, she would go right. But at the same time, duck forward trying to knock their balance over.
That's what saved Kiyoko. It wasn't just her swiftness or light moves, it was her ability to cause doubt and fear due to her unpredictability. Get the enemy to overthink, get lost in their thoughts, and you've gotten yourself a situation where they overthink.
Kiyoko pinned Inumaki down with her left foot. With her right one, she kicked the knife out of his hands. Snatching it out of the air, she spun it so it was now pointed at his face.
"That was pretty good, but I win." Kiyoko didn't gloat too much. Knowing that if they both used their cursed techniques, she could be easily defeated by his cursed speech. At the end of the day, combat could do little against a cursed speech user.
"Common let's try again" Turning around, Kiyoko called for the boy who was still laying in the dirt. Before she could get a step in, Inumaki swung out his legs trying to get her fall. Unfortunately, Kiyoko was too perceptive, she leaped back, shooting him a grin.
"Trying to use my own move against me?"
Inumaki glared at her. He stuck his finger in the dirt, and Kiyoko noticed he was trying to write something.
"I seriously thought I got you there," She read aloud. She looked at him, "be honest, no you didn't."
Fine. Your reflexes are just too quick. He wrote.
"And that's why you must find a way around that. Let's try again." Kiyoko offered him a hand, pulling him up. They dusted themselves off, and took their place on the dirt again.
Then again, silence existed before the duo, only their breaths indicated the count down.
This time it was Inumaki who charged forward first.
This was my first attempt at writing a fight scene. Hope is wasn't too confusing.
