Chapter 5
Hi guys! Thank you for all the follows (: I truly appreciate it. I would love some feedback too! I may omit some dialogue and won't follow as much with the anime as Deku is MC. I hope you all enjoy the next chapter. I promise more Todo/Kaiya interaction!
Days had passed and the Sports Festival was here. Kaiya had spent the passing days training in the gym after hours with cardio and target practice. The intense nausea and dizzy spells after each intense workout left much to be desired but she managed to do longer bursts after each session. Bakugou's rejection fueled her as she wanted to prove that she could make herself stronger. Even her left side was getting stronger, but she knew she was relying on her right side too much as it was much harder to lift her arm today due to overuse.
"How was your training Kaiya?" Kirishima asked as everyone filed into the waiting room in the arena. Kaiya couldn't help but notice Bakugou turned his attention slightly to the conversation between her and the red haired boy. She smirked and crossed her arms over her chest proudly.
"Pretty good; I feel as if I can go longer with my attacks." She answered happily. "I just hope whatever challenges we get, I can stand out." Kirishima smiled at her and sat by Kaminari and Bakugou when she saw Todoroki approach Midoriya.
"Midoriya? I just wanted to say; from an offensive standpoint; it is obvious that I am stronger than you. That being said; I will beat you." Todoroki promised the green haired boy. Kaiya rolled her eyes at the scare tactic and ignored the conversation. Boys were ridiculous.
"What is up with all these declarations of war recently?" Kaminari laughed, sitting back in his chair.
"Yeah why are you picking a fight all of a sudden man?" Kirishima asked, placing a hand on Todoroki's shoulder but was shook off.
"We're not here to make friends. This isn't a team thing; we are all each other's competition." Kaiya's attention grabbed, she narrowed her eyes at the boy's words and annoyance bubbled that he felt that way. So they aren't friends? She got up abruptly and exited the room past the ice boy roughly.
"What's her deal?" Kaiya heard Mineta ask.
Kaiya stood outside the room further down the hall to await the beginning of the festival by herself. She gritted her teeth together as she replayed Todoroki's words until he finally emerged from the room and approached her with his hands in his pockets.
"Keep your distance, people may think we're friends." She growled at him, as Todoroki arched his eyebrow at her curiously.
"I don't understand why you're mad." He stated, his monotone voice irritating her more. Kaiya groaned and ran her hands through her dark hair roughly and turned to him.
"For such a smart guy, you can be super dense, Todoroki." The boy still looked unfazed at her words. "I guess I thought we were friends." She admitted, blushing slightly. Todoroki now looked surprised at her words and shifted his weight.
"We are." He whispered as her eyes widened at his quiet admittance.
"But you just said…?" Kaiya started but was cut off by his voice.
"Yes, but I meant what I said. We aren't here to make friends and work together all the time." Kaiya deflated at his words, even more confused. "However, it happened with us. I never expected to make a friend; but I'm not going to tell Midoriya that. He is my competition; that Quirk of his is powerful." Todoroki explained, a slight blush on his own cheeks.
"You know, if you and Bakuguo would chill out in your own ways; you'll both have friends. Nothing is wrong with having alliances. It'll be a lonely life without them." Kaiya whispered, a flash of pain clouded his eyes as her words set in. "Do you not see me as competition?" She asked, a slight annoyance bubbling.
"Of course I do. You're very powerful. But I like talking to you." He shrugged his shoulders as Kaiya started giggling at his logic.
"You're weird." Kaiya sighed, in a better mood than she was a few minutes ago.
"I don't know how to be friends with someone; so if I insult you, I don't realize I mispeak." He mumbled, looking more shy than usual.
"I'll help you. Remember to smile more." Kaiya whispered, sending Todoroki a wink who blushed vehemently.
"Class 1-A; please make your way to the arena." Midnight's voice sounded over the speakers. The class exited the waiting room and crowded in the hall towards the entryway.
"Here we go." Kaiya groaned, following the class out to the arena. Cheers and claps echoed all around the stadium as the classes were all gathered in the arena, waiting for Midnight to announce the first task.
"Someone should tell Ms. Midnight what she's wearing." Kirishima blushed, noting the skin tight suit the teacher dorned.
"That's the R-Rated hero for you." Kaminari mumbled.
"As a girl...even I'm blushing." Kaiya whispered to Jirou who giggled.
"Before we get started, a few words from our Class 1-A student representative, Katsuki Bakugou." Midnight introduced him, allowing Bakugou to the stage. The class collectively gasped at the teen climbed onto the stage and stood in front of the mic.
"When did this happen?" Kaiya asked Todoroki who shrugged. "This isn't going to go well…"
"I'd just like to say...I'm going to win." Bakugou stated to a resounding response of heckles.
"And he single handedly painted a target onto our backs." Kaiya groaned, noting the death glares from the surrounding students. Midnight took her place in front of the microphone and silenced the riled crowd.
"The first task is going to be an obstacle course around the arena!" Midnight explained, showing the trail on the big screen. "Anything goes, just don't purposely hurt your classmates." She warned, eyeing Bakuguo who sucked his teeth.
"What should we be focusing on, fellow commentator?" Present Mic asked Aizawa from the commentator booth.
"The doorway." The teacher responded simply.
As soon as the students reached the door, Kaiya knew that this was the first obstacle. Todoroki threw an ice attack and stopped the majority of the students in their tracks; however Kaiya, Yayarouzo, Bakugo and a few others managed to evade the ice. Kaiya floated over the ice and used her wind to increase her speed to catch up to the boy running on foot. "Nice trick Todoroki, but you can be predictable." Kaiya smiled, gaining speed on the boy who turned to look at her over his shoulder.
The pair competed for first place until a giant robot stopped them in their path. "This must be what the other students fought during the entrance exam." Kaiya guessed, analyzing how to get over them. She brought up pieces of earth and jumped over the robots as Todoroki froze them mid attack. "Damnit, he's too quick with that damn ice." Kaiya mumbled, jumping onto the fragments until she was back on land. Suddenly, she heard explosions behind her and wasn't surprised to hear Bakugou yelling over his blasts.
"You suck!" He yelled over the falling robots as he shortened the distance between them. Kaiya growled and increased her wind velocity to put more distance between her and Bakugou. "Not fast enough Green Eyes." He aimed a blast at her side as he passed her but Kaiya retaliated with a rock fragment to his stomach.
"Try again Bakugou." She smirked, seeing the wind get knocked out of him as they landed at a valley of earth towers. "Good thing I'm not afraid of heights." She mumbled and saw Todoroki skate across the valley on his ice. "That is really annoying." She growled as she jumped and allowed the wind to push her across, leaving a recovering Bakuguo behind her.
Todoroki was now at a mine field, forced to slow down to think carefully. He could sense Kaiya was close by, but then heard explosions in the air knowing it was Bakuguo. "First place is at a disadvantage here." He said to himself as Kaiya appeared above him, waving slightly at him from the air. "She's relying too much on her wind; she's going to get tired quickly." He mumbled to himself but then felt heat next to him as Bakuguo raced by.
"Idiot! Your declaration of war was to the wrong person!" He tried grabbing for Todoroki's left side but he pushed Bakuguo off and they started fighting with each other as explosions went off behind them.
"Have fun boys!" Kaiya smiled as she used one last surge to put more distance between her and them. Her hands were getting tired but the finish line was close by. Kaiya could see it and hear the crowd cheering. Then a large explosion knocked her out of the sky and she landed hard on the ground beneath. "What the shit was that?" Her answer was Midoriya flying through the air on a piece of robot and overtook her. "Son of a bitch!" Kaiya yelled over Midoriya's landing and began to run to catch him. Bakuguo and Todoroki had stopped fighting with each other and were also trying to catch up to Midoriya. The light at the end of the tunnel finally came into view as they all raced to the end.
The crowd cheered as Midoriya, Kaiya, Todoroki, and Bakugou crossed into the arena; all trying to catch their breaths. Kaiya was hunched over on her knees, her hands throbbing in pain. "I was so close damnit." She whispered, but regained her footing; hearing people chanting. Todoroki came over to her and placed a cold hand on her shoulder.
"Keep stretching your hands, it'll help with the pain." Kaiya blushed at his advice and tucked her hair behind her ears.
"That obvious huh?" She asked, earning a slight nod from Todoroki. "That was fun; battling with you." She admitted, seeing a hint of embarrassment on his face. "I guess I can be your competition."
"You put up a good fight. Then the surprise attack from Midoriya took us all out." His eyes narrowed as the memory replayed in his head. "I can see Bakuguo is less than pleased with the results." He nodded his head in the direction of the explosion teen who was fuming with Kirishima at his side.
"That boy will have a heart attack before he's twenty." Kaiya grumbled as Midnight's voice erupted over the cheers as all the students finally finished the race.
"On to the next challenge! A cavalry battle!" Kaiya groaned as she knew she wasn't good at these kinds of challenges. Middle school sports day proved that many times; she just didn't have the strength to keep her Quirk going. Midnight explained the rules and Kaiya laughed to herself when she saw that Midoriya was now the target; worth ten million points.
"Poor kid. Bakuguo is going to demolish you." Kaiya whispered, then saw the fire in Todoroki's eyes next to her. "And maybe Todoroki too..?"
"You have fifteen minutes to choose your team and strategize!" Midnight instructed. "Begin!" Kaiya looked around and saw obvious teams forming until Todoroki spoke up next to her, snapping out of his mental target practice.
"Let's talk to Kaminari and Iida. Hopefully they will join us." Kaiya froze at his plan to include her and earned a smirk from the ice boy. "If you were wanting to join me that is?" She nodded excitedly and walked over to Kaminari to convince him to join.
"Okay, so Kaminari you are on the defensive with Kaiya. Protect our sides as much as possible. Iida is our speed. Kaiya, you have two jobs. Defense and I need you to use your wind to make us float to increase our speed when necessary." Todoroki explained carefully. It was a good plan so far, but if she was going to use a lot of her Quirk, Kaiya was going to get burned out quickly. She had to be careful.
"Good. And you will use your fire and ice for defense as well?" Iida asked the rider.
"I never use my left side in battle." Todoroki replied, looking up into the audience. I followed his eye line and saw the Flame Hero: Endeavour standing tall, glaring down at his son. I bet that pisses off his father; not using his fire. "Everyone understand the plan?" He asked his group who all nodded.
The timer began and Team Todoroki did well taking the bands from weaker teams quickly. Kaiya knew that Todoroki was gunning for Midoriya's ten million points; but they had to be careful. With Tokoyami's Dark Shadow on the defense, they had to strategize; and Kaminari could only use his electricity so much.
Kaiya's mind was buzzing while Midoriya and Todorki stood against each other. She saw how the Dark Shadow kept his distance from Kaminari; knowing that the electric teen was his weakness when an idea struck Kaiya. "Kaminari, aim an attack at Dark Shadow. I have an idea." She whispered.
"I can't aim an attack that big without hitting us." He answered sadly. "Did you want shock treatment today?" Kaiya rolled her eyes and growled back to him.
"Just do it, I'll protect us from your attack." Todoroki looked down at Kaiya with confusion, but he must have decided to trust her. Kaminari powered up as Kaiya created a wind barrier around the team; allowing Kaminari's shock wave to fry everyone else around them. Dark Shadow decreased in size and Kaiya's theory panned out. "He's weakened by light. That's how we get him." She concluded, locking eyes with Todoroki. They charged the team in front of them as Todoroki's arm lit up with a flame while Midoriya barely dodged his attack. "Todoroki what are you doing?" Kaiya called out to him.
"That was too close!" Iida chastised the rider. Todoroki cradled his left arm as Kaiya realized he didn't mean to use his fire.
"One more try, come on! Time is running out!" Kaiya tried to refocus her friend. "We need to win this!"
"I can use a special move; but Todoroki, you have to be quick and grab the points." The speedster instructed, earning an agreement from Todoroki. Iida powered up and charged Midoriya's team as Kaiya kept the team floating slightly to increase their speed. Todorki got the ten million point band as Kaiya and Iida decreased their speed with their Quirks to avoid crashing into an ice barricade. Iida's engine was fried and Kaminari was slowly descending into lameness, and Kaiya's hands wouldn't be able to do another painless attack until she rested.
"We have to keep a safe distance from Midoriya." Kaiya pointed out to Todoroki, trying not to shake in pain. The rider analyzed his team and realized it was up to Kaiya and him. Kaiya erupted a wall of earth as Midoriya tried attacking again but he only managed to grab a band worth small points. "The timer is almost up!" Kaiya gasped, seeing it tick down quickly. Suddenly, Bakuguo erupted over the ice barricade as the time ran out and landed hard on the ground. "Thank god." Kaiya sighed, releasing her grip on Todoroki.
"Are you okay?" He asked her, seeing her stretch her hands out.
"That was a lot harder than I thought it would be." She admitted, seeing anger in his eyes. "What's up with you?" He remained silent as we saw the scores lit up on the screen and saw that they came in first. "My god that was close." She sighed, feeling Todoroki tense next to her. "We did well anyway." Todoroki nodded. "I think I saw a little flame spark between you and Midoriya." Kaiya observed, seeing Todoroki visibly tense again.
"It won't happen again." He stated simply. Kaiya knew his fireside was an exposed nerve to Todoroki; even if she couldn't fully understand why he refused to use it, she respected him enough to accept it. Family drama was something foreign to Kaiya.
"If my opinion means anything, your fire is powerful if it's anything like your ice. You'd be near impossible to beat if you used both sides." Kaiya pointed out sweetly. Todoroki's eyes were warm as he looked at her in surprise. "I mean...I wish I had the control you do. I'd be pretty unstoppable too." She whispered, earning a sharp gasp from her friend.
Seeing Kaminari stumble around dumbly, Kaiya stifled a laugh and turned to Iida. "As funny as that is to see, when does that wear off?" Iida shrugged his shoulders and stretched his calves out. "That move was pretty awesome Iida; you secured us that win." The engine teen blushed and thanked her shyly.
"Our rider chose a great team. Who knew wind could combate electricity?" Iida smiled at her kindly.
"Well, wind power generates electricity; so in a way, I made Kaminari's attack stronger while shielding us. It's a bit complicated." Kaiya smiled, rubbing her neck. "I'm starving…" She groaned, looking around for her lunch partner but he had vanished. "Have you seen where Todoroki went?" Iida shook his head and found himself looking for Midoriya; who was also missing. "Oh no. He went to find him." Kaiya groaned.
The next challenges lit up on the screen, showing the different combinations of fights that would happen after lunch. Kaiya saw who she was matched up with and sighed happily. "Yayarouzo."
"I hope we have a good match Ayumi." A soft voice sounded from behind her. Yayarouzo stood behind, her arms crossed over her chest confidently. "Don't pull any punches."
"I wasn't planning on it." Kaiya smiled, flexing her hand. Yayarouzo was not going to be a hard component, but an interesting one. Her reaction time was slower than Kaiya's and she needed to get close to use most of her creations; but she was very intelligent. Kaiya was better suited for long range attacks and that's what would beat her opponent.
"I assume you already have a plan?" Bakuguo's voice sounded. He had his hands in his pockets lazily, walking up behind Kaiya. He was against Ururaka, and Kaiya feared for her.
"I have an inkling." Kaiya smiled cheekily. Bakuguo just scoffed. "Anyway, I'm starving, i'll see you later." Kaiya said, turning to leave.
"Wait, Green Eyes." He growled, stopping Kaiya in her tracks. She turned to him slowly and waited for him to speak. "You...are a real competitor." He managed to choke out. Kaiya smiled widely at him but before she could say thank you, he turned away roughly. She rolled her eyes at the unsociable boy and turned to leave for lunch.
Kaiya ventured into the cafeteria and grabbed a plate of chicken and rice. Her stomach was growling happily at the introduction of food as she finished her meal. Once done, Kaiya kept walking to keep her energy up as she continued to stretch out her hands. They were getting less sore with each stretch, but she had to find a way to combat the pain during long winded fights. During her self analysis, Kaiya didn't realize she had walked into the entrance tunnels for the students, near the locker rooms. "Whoops, this isn't right." Then she heard a familiar voice that stopped her in her tracks.
"Have you ever heard of Quirk marriages?" Kaiya's curiosity got the better of her when she tried turning the corner to hear more but felt hard hands pulling her to a body. She almost gasped out when warm hands covered her mouth, silencing her cry. Kaiya saw the red eyes of Bakugou glaring down at her, willing her to be silent.
"Stay quiet or I'll kill you." He whispered to her. She rolled her eyes at him but nodded her agreement. He released Kaiya's mouth but kept a firm hand on her waist. She didn't have the luxury of pushing him off so she remained against him.
Kaiya heard the familiar story of Todoroki; about his mother and father's forced marriage to produce a strong child to take over All Might one day. Kaiya already knew this information, but she knew why Bakugou wanted to know; he was looking for a weakness to exploit. After Todoroki promised to beat Midoriya at the festival, Kaiya knew Bakugou took it upon himself to prove that he was worthy of Todoroki's challenge too.
"She called my left side unbearable. She is crying in all my memories of her." Kaiya could hear the pain in her friends' voice; different from when he was angry speaking of his father. He misses his mother. "I reminded her...of a painful memory. She poured boiling water on my face." Kaiya gasped at the new information. Bakugou's hand shot up to her mouth roughly, his red eyes burning into her green ones. Kaiya sent an apologetic look his way and stretched her ears to hear more.
"I will win without his damned fire Quirk. I will be a hero without his help or his power. I will be the hero I want to be; without him." Todoroki promised. Kaiya knew Todoroki's father was tough but she never assumed he was abusive; especially to him. Her heart ached for her friend and could hear the anger in his voice when he finished his statement.
Kaiya heard footsteps retreat out of the tunnel as Bakuguo and she stayed against each other. Silence dragged on for a while until Bakuguo realized he had his hands still on Kaiya's waist and pushed her off him slightly. "How much of that did you already know?" He asked her, clearing his throat.
"I knew about his father; but not the mother. Or how he came by his scar." Kaiya held her hand to her heart, feeling the pain of Todoroki's past. No wonder he wanted to trade his childhood for mine. Even though he didn't know what she had gone through; anything was better than a mother being sent to a hospital; and an overbearing father who controlled every aspect of his life. "Poor Todoroki." Kaiya whispered, tears stinging in her eyes; but she refused to let them flow. Bakuguo regarded her carefully, scoffing at her reaction.
"Either way, I will beat him." He stated simply. Kaiya turned her sad gaze into an angry scowl at his coldness. His eyes burned into hers, knowing he hit a nerve.
"How can you be so cold about what you just heard? One of your classmates suffered an extreme trauma early on and grew up in a horrible environment. Don't you feel anything?" Her words were harsh but Bakuguo didn't back down.
"The world is scary and hard princess. Learning that quickly will only benefit you. You may want to think about that, Green Eyes." He turned to leave but Kaiya pulled him back against the wall and pinned him. Her arms were on either side of his shoulders and he had to look down at her slightly as he was taller than her. He almost snapped but Kaiya cut him off.
"Do not make the mistake of thinking that I don't know how shit this world is. You do not know me or what I've gone through to survive. Through it all though; I still feel empathy and sympathy for people I care about." Her voice was low and almost carnal, her eyes colored fire again so Bakugou couldn't break eye-contact with them. "Think before you speak to me again." With her last threat, she removed her arms from beside Bakuguo's shoulders. He watched her strut away, speechless and curious to where she got her own burn mark on her left arm and wondered why her eyes changed color when she got angry.
