Sandy laid on the exam table with the thin white cloth covering her clothed body. Randy, her brother, sat in a chair next to her as they waited for the ultrasound technician to come in the room. Randy looked around somewhat amazing at all the different equipment in the room.
"The crap in dis here room is probably worth more than I'll make in my life." Randy complained as he tapped the screen of the ultrasound computer that was sitting on a movable cart right behind his sisters head.
"Stop it Randy." Sandy scolded as she slapped his hand away from the equipment that she was about to see her child on for the first time.
"Sorry." He apologized as he placed his hands in his lap and started tapping his feet nervously. "I just hate these places."
"Sorry ta make ya come, Randy." Sandy apologized as she started to feel somewhat guilty for having her brother here instead of her husband.
"Are ya kidding me? There is no place I'd rather be right now. I'm gonna be an uncle!" Randy beamed proudly at his sister before looking around the rest of the room one last time and then shivering with unease one last time. The huge grin returned to Randy's face after he made eye contact with his sister once again.
"Thanks, Randy." Sandy smiled meekly as she reached her hand out and then squeezed his shoulder.
"Ya might be starting yer own family, but we're still family, sis." Randy laughed as he placed his hand on hers and squeezed it lovingly in return.
Sandy continued to smile at her brother and nodded her head in approval as she tried to hold back becoming emotional. Both squirrels jumped slightly as the door to the room they occupied opened.
"Hello!" The young, brown, female mouse sang as she entered to room. "I hope you're both ready to take a closer look at your little cutie!" The woman continued to sing very enthusiastically.
Both squirrels focused on the young woman that was explaining the process of exams she was about to perform on the mother-to-be. The siblings nodded their heads in understand until the mouse finally pulled the sheet down to Sandy groin and moved her shirt up to just below her breasts.
Randy grinned and poked Sandy still mostly flat stomach. "Damn yer already showing!" He laughed getting a glare from his sister in response.
The medical worker smiled as she lubed up the ultrasound wand and then placed it on Sandy's abdomen. "It's so nice to see couples that can have such fun with one another."
The brother and sister duo looked at the mouse in horror, and even a slight blush crossed over Randy's face. "Oh no!" Sandy laughed. "Randy, here, is my brother."
"OH! My mistake!" The nurse giggled. "I definitely can see the resemblance now that you mention it." She then looked back to her screen and became ever more thrilled as a squeak of excitement escaped her. "Are you two ready to hear the heartbeat?"
"Yes!" They both responded at the same time with enthusiasm.
After the young mouse hit a button on her keyboard the sound of a fast pulsating heartbeat played through the modest speakers mounted on the flat screened monitor. Randy reached out his hand and grabbed his sister arm as he looked at the screen and saw the little X-ray like video feed of what resembled a small bean bouncing around in darkness. Sandy reached her other hand over and gipped his as she too watched the screen and started to tear up.
"Holy shit... It's really alive." Randy whispered as he held back sobbing. "You married a pin head and now yer pregnant with a bean sprout." Randy let a small laugh escape him as he looked away briefly and wiped away a tear that managed to slip past his defenses.
Sandy looked over at him to bark, but then noticed his overly emotional demeaner and decided to leave him be to hind behind his poor attempt at a joke. "Life sure is funny." She responded while turning her attention back to the screen.
"And that's not all!"
The squirrels looked at female examiner with confused as she moved the wand once more on Sandy. "Say hello to baby number two!"
Randy started laughing historically while more tears rolled down his face. "Yer so fucked!"
Sandy looked at the screen as a few tears made their way down to her chin as well. She was overwhelmed with joy, but also terror. "Guess I'm gonna be apologizing to ma quite a bit soon."
Randy leaned over and kissed his sister's forehead. "Don't worry. I'll come over and be an extra thorn in yer side every now and then. Just so ya will realized how good ya have it with me no longer living there."
The two-sibling stayed in the exam room as the nurse took pictures and measurements of Sandy's growing twins. When they were finally able to leave Randy drove Sandy back to her house and gave her a hug goodbye before taking off to make it back to work for the last half of the day. Sandy made herself a light lunch and looked over the ultrasound print outs. She considered calling her mom, but decided she best break the updated news to Shadow before she did to anyone else.
So instead of interacting with her family, and opening up about her pregnancy she went to her makeshift office and started working on some of her consulting contracts. She was ahead of the game on all of the three she was working on right now, but she was nearly done with one in particular. She decided to focus on finishing up the one she was making the most progress on as she waited for her husband to return home from work.
