Heizo Hattori was many things and had been called many things of the years. He was a smart man and sly too. One thing he was above all else though, was a man who loved and valued family.
His wife was the only woman in the world he would and could love, she was his universe and soul and the reason he still got up and went to work in the morning. To make the world safer so that she didn't have to worry so much.
His son, his darling Heiji, was the apple of his eye. His son meant everything to him and though he was never good at showing his emotions he was so very proud of his sons accomplishments. He didn't like his son's hot headed nature because his son got it from him and that same nature had gotten Heizo shot more than once over the course of his life even before he joined the police.
Thankfully Shizuka, his lovely beautiful Shizuka, was more than happy to be his mouthpiece for the emotions Heizo didn't know how and couldn't show. She was openly proud of their son enough for the both of them and Heizo was sure that his son knew he was proud of him.
So when his son, his proud cocky hot headed son, had come back from a trip to Beika to find and talk with his 'detective Rival' Shinichi Kudo thinking deeply about something and mentioning a smart little boy living with Mouri Kogoro off hand, Heizo had taken notice.
When his son later went on a trip that he had won because of a Sherlock Holmes contest, although Heizo was aware his sons favorite author was Agatha Christie, talking about that same smart little boy and no mention of Kudo Heizo was slightly relieved. From what he knew from the officer ball or meetings with the Beika divisions, Kudo was considered a magnet for trouble and usually murders. Heizo was glad that his son didn't seem to care much for Kudo anymore and was instead focused on the smart little boy that stayed with Mouri, who had quickly started gaining fame as a 'sleeping sleuth' after the boys arrival Heizo had noticed, Heizo didn't really mind.
Better a small and easy to help or at least carry away from danger friend than a bigger stubborn one who couldn't go ten meters without a dead body popping up.
Then after Heiji had been hurt while hanging out with Mouri, something he seemed to like doing more of now but Heizo was sure it had more to do with Conan-kun than Mouri himself, and Mouri hadn't even come to apologize for letting their son get hurt both he and Shizuka had been skeptical of the man and not very happy.
So, with his knowledge and approval, Shizuka had concocted a small test for Mouri Kogoro to find an old friend of hers from her middle school days of being on the Kendo team to retrieve a photograph that she didn't really care about. She had come back from Beika pouting slightly over how her son insisted on calling her an old lady, something Heizo had bonked his son on the head for when he came back home, but saying how Mouri had passed the test and then began gushing over Conan-kun.
"Heizo he was adorable and the way he calls our son Heiji-nii is just too precious!" Heizo had listened closely to his wife's gushing of the little boy, even if to everyone else it seemed as if he was ignoring her as he worked on paperwork.
"He was so smart and observant too! He was the one who pointed out the clue that led to us finding Shunya-san! Or well at least led to us finding his body." Shizuka said and he gave her his full attention visibly at that part. She immediately began regaling him with every single detail of what happened since she arrived in Beika and met with Mouri, and it had his blood boiling with jealousy that Mouri had tried to flirt with his wife and had even laughed and looked pleased when an inspector he knew confused his Shizuka for Mouri's wife (and oh how he had been glad Heiji wasn't home when he got his wife home that night because he very thoroughly reminded her of how happily married she was and how no one else could make her sing like he could), and how they had found Shunya-san's body. She especially loved talking about cute smart little Conan-kun who called their son 'big brother' and who, much to Heizo's amusement, upon learning that Shizuka was Heiji's mother asked how come Heiji wasn't pretty like her.
Shizuka had always loved children, she had wanted at least three of her own with him when they married and he had been happy to help her achieve that dream. They were very happy, even if it was hard for most to tell that he was happy, when their son was born healthy and strong. They had waited until he was about five to start trying for the second one but…her second pregnancy didn't make it past the first trimester. Her third made it to the second trimester but she had been shot in the stomach by a perp that wanted revenge on Heizo himself and the baby hadn't made it.
Her fourth and final pregnancy had made it all the way to labor but…she had nearly bled to death. And their child, a little girl she had been planning to name Tsuki, had been still born.
Heiji was only seven and didn't really understand any of it yet, he had been focused on 'solving mysteries' which was mainly just finding lost cats at that age and hadn't even realized he was supposed to have gotten a younger sibling.
To save Shizuka the nurses had to remove her uterus while they tried to stop the bleeding. She would never get pregnant again. It had absolutely devastated the both of them, although hers was more visible, and for the longest time Heizo had thought that he'd only ever get to see his wife's soft proud smiles at their sons accomplishments. But then…
Then she had come back from Beika gushing about the 'little brother' their son had 'adopted' and he saw her smile, big wide beaming and bright just as she had been the day he married her and the day their Heiji was born, again. As soon as he saw the smile on her face as she gushed about Conan, Heizo knew he would forever be in the boys debt for bringing that smile back to his wife's face.
Then the day came where Heiji started dancing around happily about Conan coming to visit Osaka with the Mouri's and Heizo nearly took the day off of work immediately to stay and meet the boy who had captured his wife and sons hearts. But there had been important cases, the wallet murders and the loose serial killer and several other things they were keeping close to the vest, that he needed to get solved. Shizuka had gave a soft squeal at hearing Conan was coming to visit and immediately started planning out a delicious meal that was more like a feast than anything else and interrogated their son on Conan's favorite foods.
But of course, of course, while they were leaving their lunch destination a dead body literally fell almost on their heads and his son got dragged into the wallet murder case and apparently took a more than willing Conan along for the ride.
Heizo hadn't been happy to hear that his son had taken Conan with him to investigate a killer, but had been proud to hear how protective Heiji had been of the boy and how much of a help Conan had been during the investigation. But then, then before Ohtaki, could get Conan safely to an eagerly awaiting Shizuka and the delicious food that she had cooked for them, information about the serial killer came through and Ohtaki had made a lapse in judgement as he took them along for the ride to catch the criminal. Sure he had to admit the man had a point in knowing that Kazuha was an Akido expert and Mouri was there and a known Judo master, but still since when did children stay in the car and behave?
Heizo still remembered the horror that had gripped his heart, although his face never changed a single bit, when his wife had called sobbing about how Conan was in the hospital and according to Heiji it was bloody and not looking good. If something happened to the boy that his family was so fond of…that he had grown fond of after listening to them gush about him so much…Heizo didn't want to consider it.
Getting to the hospital and hearing all of the details Heizo just held his wife close while waiting on news about the boy, relieved to hear that most of the damage was just superficial and hadn't broken the bone or gotten to the boys organs. Conan would have the scar for the rest of his life and be on bed rest for a while but at least he was alive and would recover.
Hearing about how his parents hadn't visited in over a year, how they had just foisted him off on the Mouri's, and how he had been terrified of his own mother had made his heart feel as if a knife had been stabbed into it and twisted. He knew of the cruel truths of the world and now suddenly everything he heard about the boy took new twists.
His brilliant mind? Sharpened far too soon by the fact no one was there so he found comfort in books and documentaries. His love of mysteries? Probably from wondering what he had done wrong and why his parents weren't there. His lack of self-worth to the point of diving in front of a knife for Ran-san? Probably because no one cared about him before so he didn't realize anyone would care about him now. The way he seemed confused by Shizuka's motherly actions and care for him? Because his own mother hadn't shown him those actions or cared for him. So he didn't know what was up with Shizuka or why she was treating him like she had Heiji when he was that age and hurt.
So as he watched his beloved wife fret and fuss over Conan while Heiji came racing in because his 'bad feeling' had gotten worse and he had ran over as fast as he could, only to be told of what happened and was now standing guard in front of Conan's bed growling at others if they got too close for his liking…
Heizo made a silent vow. He'd talk with Shizuka about filing adoption papers and sharing custody with the Mouri's later. But for now he'd make do with standing guard to make sure nothing got past him to his wife and either of his sons.
He didn't care who had hurt his kid in the past, that was a lie he did care and he would hunt them down and show them the difference between brutality and police brutality later, but no one would hurt Heizo's youngest son again.
He'd call McGuire who was one of the lead officers in Beika later and make sure the man was aware of what was going on and that Conan was now considered a high priority target for anyone who might have a grudge against the Hattori family.
Because if something dared hurt or even kill his youngest…Shizuka and Heiji would snap and burn the world down.
And Heizo would be right there with them holding the matches.
