Light streamed in between the shades of Jon's window, rousing him from the deep sleep that had been the result of last night's events. He sat up and winced as he moved his bad leg. It was stiffer than usual, which only really happened when he put too much strain on it. When it was stiff like this, it made climbing down from his loft in the Gen Tech building more of a challenge than usual. As he reached the landing in his personal office, more reminders of the previous night surfaced. Notably, his door being kicked off the hinges, two large hoof prints marking the door. "I should probably find them, see if they're still crazy or hopefully back to normal." Jon said, grabbing his cane from a rack near the door.
His first stop was the ground floor where Sarah had lurked the night before. It wasn't long until he found the fire hose he used to repel Sarah. There was still a puddle left from the attack as well as the crumpled hose on the ground. Jon started wrapping up the hose while deep in thought. Honestly, the hose trick was a stupid idea. Anything could've gone wrong with the plan, but it was Sarah that concerned Jon. Sarah was cold blooded now, meaning if her body heat dropped too low… he didn't want to think about what could've happened. The only thing keeping him from worrying his head off was the absence of Sarah herself, a trail of water leading away from the puddle telling him that she at least moved at some point.
After putting the hose back and finding a wet floor sign, while also making a mental note to put in a work order for any other damages that occurred last night, Jon proceeded down the hall to Sarah's room. Since Sarah was now employed with Gen Tech and decided that it'd be easier to stay on sight rather than having a truck come and get her everyday, she had one of the larger rooms that occasionally housed patients converted into a room. Jon hadn't seen the inside of Sarah's room but wished it didn't have to happen like this. "Sarah, it's Jon. Are you in there?" Jon asked after knocking on the door.
After a moment of silence, a meek response passed through the door. "Yes…"
"Do you mind if I come in?"
"No…"
Jon slowly opened the door to Sarah's room, proceeding with caution due to the previous night. Inside the room were normal things you'd find in a teenager's room. A desk more suited for Sarah's body, a closet full of clothes and a considerable amount of skirts, a full length mirror next to a dresser with photos of Sarah's family presumably. In the center of the room was Sarah, her bed consisted of an Alaskian King Mattress that took up most of the space in the room. She had recently taken to this mattress because it allowed her to fully extend her tail if she wanted. Right now however, she was currently all coiled up and under and covered by blankets, like snow covering a mountain top. "I wanted to come by and apologize for last night. I could've hurt you or worse with that stunt with the hose."
Sarah turned to the doctor, her eyes a little red. "You shouldn't have to apologize, I can't believe I acted like that last night." She said, sniffling a little. "Besides, that little blast of cold water put me down for the night, I came back here to warm up after I woke up." Sarah told him.
"Well, it makes me glad that I didn't harm you last night." Jon said, sitting down on the bed. "Do you wanna talk more about what happened?"
Sarah sat there for a second, contemplating the doctor's question. "I do… but I think it's a conversation that I should have with , you know, girl things." She said with a very slight smile. "Oh, wait. What happened to Rose and Majors? Did they go through the same thing?"
"Yeah they did, Majors had some people tied up in webs and Rose kicked down my office door. Speaking of which, I need to go check up on them… and let the Mellow's know why Rose stayed overnight." Jon said, not looking forward to the call he had to make.
As Jon's hand touched the handle of Sarah's room, she spoke up one more time. "Jon… are you angry at me?"
"Not at all Sarah, there wasn't anyway we could've known about this. Now get some rest, I imagine you didn't get a lot last night." Jon responded, shutting the door behind him.
Sarah let out a sigh of relief, uncoiling her body and letting it relax as she slipped into sleep.
Jon's next stop was the second floor, he made an immediate beeline for the balcony since nobody would've cleaned up the wreckage of his date. To his surprise, Rose was already nearly done with the cleanup. She had just finished folding up the table they were using the night before when Jon stepped out onto the balcony. The tension was thick, it filled the air so much that it was almost suffocating them. "Hey… how are you feeling?" Jon asked, finally breaking the silence.
"Kinda sore, didn't get a lot of sleep last night." Rose said, pulling the table towards the door. "Are you okay though? Last night got pretty… rowdy to say the least." Rose said, turning to Jon.
"The leg's a little stiff but nothing that won't go away." Jon said, tapping his bad leg with his cane. After saying that, he realized that his cane should still be around somewhere.
"Don't bother," Rose said, pulling out Jon's cane from that night. It was snapped in half, most likely due to Rose trampling over it. "Sorry, I found it when I woke up." She said sheepishly.
"Don't be, this one was getting pretty old anyway." Jon said, tossing the cane into the trash bag that Rose had scrounged up. "I know it's probably not something you want to think about but, do you want me to tell your parents what happened? I don't think this was a one time thing and they're probably worried sick about you. For all they know, you've been stuck here all night."
"I'll tell them, it's no use having them get mad at you for something out of your control. Besides, I'm pretty sure you have other things to do."
"I do, but I want to make sure that you're alright more than anything." Jon said, taking Rose's hand.
A smile crossed Rose's face for the first time today. "Thank you Jon." She said, bending down and kissing the top of Jon's head. Jon walked off towards the staircase, handing to check on Majors next while Rose pulled out her phone. "Hey mom…" Rose began to say before her mom cut her off.
"Rose Mary Mellow! Do you know how much trouble you are in?! Staying overnight at a boy's home, not answering any of our calls, making you dear old mother worry her head off!" Rose's mom shouted, making Rose pull her phone away from her heightened ears.
"Sorry mom, something came up last night and I had to stay here. I'll talk about it more when I get home. Can you send dad to come and get me?"
"He's already on his way, he left the house as soon as he saw you calling me. Just… be honest with me, did try anything indecent last night?"
"MOM NO!" Rose shouted, an embarrassed blush covering her face. "He was very nice and the date was lovely… I kinda messed it all up though. There was a problem with the moon and it's a long story." She said, realizing how crazy it sounded out of context.
"Well dear, Jon is a bright and understanding young man, he certainly won't hold it against you. Besides, if you feel so bad about it, why don't you do something nice for him. Something he'd really appreciate."
"Thanks Mom, I'll see you soon." Rose said, hanging up and trotting down to the parking lot. Her head starting to race with ideas.
Jon took a deep breath before opening the door to his and Major's lab. She was slumped over a desk, random files and notes scattered across the floor. "Majors? Are you okay?" He said, rushing over to the spider woman.
Major's suddenly shot up, a long trail of drool leading down to her desk. She turned to Jon and smiled. It wasn't one of her usual smiles where she flashed her razor sharp teeth, it was a relaxed one. "Heyyy Jon! How ya… how ya doing?" She said, her speech slightly slurred.
"Majors? Are you… intoxicated?" Jon asked, not figuring this is what would be waiting for him.
"Nooo! How could I be?" Majors said with a laugh. "There's no alcohol allowed in the building, silly." She said, knocking over a nearby mug. The fragrance of dark coffee wafted through the air as the dark liquid coated the tiles of the floor. "Noooooo! Now I need another cup." Majors said, standing up and wobbling around a bit.
"Woah woah, Majors! You should get some rest! We don't even know what's going on with you!" Jon said, trying to keep Majors from leaving the lab.
"I don't wanna! I want some more coffee!" Majors said when one of her legs slipped in the coffee puddle. Majors went down, thankfully being caught by a web hammock she must have set up sometime last night.
Jon sighed as Majors struggled to get out of her stomach. "I'm sorry to do this… again Majors but you need some rest." Jon said, pulling out the tranq gun from his lab coat, hitting Major's with a dart.
"Awwww…" Majors began to whine before she succumbed to the tranquilizer.
Jon sighed once more, making sure Majors was comfortable in the hammock before going over to inspect her computer. It seemed she was starting to take notes on the events that transpired the previous night. She wrote on how the full moon had affected her before Jon had arrived and shot her, noting on how she wasn't affected again when she woke up. Jon figured that was because she couldn't see the moon in the lab after he locked it down. At one point, Major's writing slowly deteriorated more and more. Curious, Jon pulled up the security footage from around the time when the writing started getting sloppy, finding that it matched up with Majors finishing her first cup of coffee.
"Interesting, coffee affects Major's new body like how alcohol affects a normal human." Jon said, jotting down that fact quickly. A loud snore broke Jon's train of thought. He decided that he should leave to let Major's sleep off the coffee she had consumed.
As he shut the door behind him, he pulled out his phone. He punched in the number of Maya the harpy, wanting to check in on her since she wasn't in the building last night. "Heya ! How're you doing?" She asked, as chipper as could be.
"I'm fine, thank you Maya. I wanted to ask, did anything happen to you last night?" Jon asked, figuring that she would know that he was talking about the full moon if anything happened.
"Not that I can think of! I went to bed super early last night because I got really tired from flying around. The sun was just about to set when I went to bed." Maya said, thinking back to the previous day.
"Thank you Maya, you helped me clear something up. I'll let you go now." Jon said, hanging up with the harpy. As he went to put away his phone, a notification popped up on his phone. "Oh shit! That was today!" Jon said while limping towards the exit, having to get on the bus so he could go home and spend time with his family.
Jon stepped off the bus, looking at the house he spent so little time at. He limped up to the door, taking out his keys and fiddling with them to unlock the door. As he was about to put the key in the lock, the door suddenly swung open and two large arms pulled him into a big bear hug.
"My boy! One of the head American Researchers of the Liminal Virus!" The owner of the arms shouted, pulling Jon into a big bear hug. The man currently giving Jon a killer bear hug was his father, Douglas Withers. Doug used to work at Gen Tech before Jon was born, even having a chance to be promoted to the director. Though, he left the labs before Jon was born to stay closer to home and not be around such dangerous diseases that could harm his newborn. Now, he was a simple high school science teacher and basketball coach.
"Dad! I surrender!" Jon shouted, his hand reaching up into the air while his cane pressed into his abdomen.
"Honey, let our son go so he can breath… and so I can have a turn!" A pair of smaller arms said, pulling Jon into another just as strong bear hug. The owner of this suffocating bear hug was Mary Withers, Jon's mother. Mary could be seen on TV every morning as one of the city's leading news anchors, being somewhat of a local celebrity.
"Mom! Not you too!" Jon said, struggling to escape the strong grip of his mother.
"Nope! I get to hug you as long as I want when you stay away for that long!" Mary said, finally releasing the young doctor after a good while. "Now, I've almost finished with dinner so go up and get your sister, then you can tell us all about your findings and new girlfriend."
A blush colored Jon's face as he started climbing the steps in the house. "You heard about that?" He asked.
"Boy, you didn't even make it past the farm's gate before Frank and Jess called us." Doug said, following his wife into the kitchen.
Jon's blush turned more red as he heard his parents laughing about the situation in the kitchen. He tried to calm down as he knocked on the door to his little sister's room. "Hey nerd, your favorite doctor is home."
The door swung open to reveal April Withers, Jon's fifteen year old little sister. "Bold of you to assume that, you big dweeb." She said, hugging her brother. "Is it dinner time?" She asked, shutting her door behind her.
"Yeah, Mom wanted me to come and get you." Jon said, turning around to head back down the stairs. "How's school been going for you?" He asked.
"Pretty good, it's hard to fail science when your dad is the teacher. You should have seen him light up when some kid brought up the Liminal Virus. We made some slime today for the fun of it." She said, trudging behind her brother into the kitchen.
"I would've gone more into it, but on the next half day I'll talk in detail about what info is already out to the public." Doug said while setting down some food on the table. "For now, tell me what you haven't told the media." He asked with a sparkle in his eye that always appeared when something caught his interest.
"Yes, tell us everything!" Mary said with a similar sparkle, though it was because she could possibly get a story out of what her son was about to say.
"There's nothing new that I haven't released to the public!" Jon said, putting his hands up. "Well, aside from the events of last night." He said, starting to recount the events of the previous night to them.
"So wait, you shot your partner and your girlfriend? While also blasting a girl with water? Aren't you a charmer?" April said, finishing the last of her food.
"Were they alright or were they still crazy this morning?" Doug asked, intrigued by this new discovery.
"They were normal, they remembered what happened last night so I think it's something to do with their new instincts but I can't be sure." Jon said, starting to pick up plates around the table.
"Well, I'd like to talk more but I'm just super tired for some reason. I think I'm gonna hit the hay early tonight." April said, wiping her brow as she left the kitchen. "And dad, could you turn down the heat? It feels like I'm melting." She said before heading up the stairs.
Mary, Doug, and Jon looked at each other with confusion. Doug stood up and checked the thermostat in the dining room next to them. "It's only 55 degrees?" He said. That's when the realization hit all three of them, and a loud noise sounded off from the floor above them. "April!" They all shouted as Jon was the first to scramble up the steps.
Jon swung the door open, not caring what could be on the other side. What met him was horrifying, the bed, the desk, the walls, everything was covered in this neon blue goop but April was nowhere in sight. "April! April! Where are you!" Jon shouted as he took a step into the room.
A gasp filled the room as Jon's foot made contact with the goop on the floor. "Stop! You're stepping on me!" April's voice said, echoing around the room. The two parents and the doctor watched as all the goop in the room began to move of its own accord, forming into one large puddle that started bubbling and taking the shape of April Withers. All four people were stunned into silence, looking at the translucent girl in the center of the room when they all screamed at once.
...surprise!
