Voltron Spartan Defenders Chapter 6

:Chapter Start:

Orbit over the Balmera-several hours later

Tom and Lucy were piloting the invisible Green Lion as it flew over the living planet surrounded by Galra ships and facilities built on the surface. Jorge stood behind the pair looking down at the planet below with a dark look as he says, "Land us planet side, me and the Threes will contact the locals and then get back to you." Jorge pats Lucy's shoulder with that before the Green Lion flew into the planet's atmosphere carefully past several Galra patrols before finding a large hole where several dozen life forms were detected. The Green Lion flew slowly to reach the bottom where the Galra Drones were not patrolling. Scans indicating that no Power Crystals were in the area. Jorge, Ash, Olivia and Mark step out concealed Green Lion ready for a fight. Jorge spoke, "Remember this is recon only, we are going to meet with the locals before returning to base. Weapons fire only if we are fired upon."

The three Spartan-III nodded as Jorge took point with his heavy gun ready for a fight. They entered the tunnels only to stop as they found a local female, with head garments and wearing what appeared to be rags. The local gasped before Jorge raised a hand and removed his helmet as he placed his Bayard on his hip as the Local asks, "Who are you?"

"Spartans ma'am," Jorge answers while the S3s were ready for any hostile moves, "My name is Jorge, what is your name?"

"My name is Shay. Why are you here?" Shay questions Jorge.

"Making contact with the local Balmera, we needed to know the strength of the Galra on your home," Jorge states.

Shay was thoughtful before stating, "The village elder, he should be able to give you the information. Have you come to save the Balmera?"

Jorge was silent for a moment before stating, "We will do what we can, Ma'am but we do not know the condition of the Balmera, hence our visit before engaging the Galra stationed on this planet."

Shay nods in understanding as she lead the four Spartans to the main village barely any food, to share between them and everyone appearing old or sickly. Jorge looks to everyone before asking Shay, "Does the Galra give you minimal food?"

Shay answered, "No, the Balmera provides for us, almost of her energy is used to make Power Crystals but they have been few in between and of lower quality."

Jorge frowns at that before focusing on everyone and then turning to the S3s and says, "Go back to green and get the rations that have been stashed inside and bring it back here. Split the food up for everyone here." The S3s nod before rushing back to the Green Lion where they could collect the supplies. Jorge was then taken to the larger hut where Shay introduced the village elder to Jorge and many of the other elders and apparently Shay's brother.

"Shay who is this intruder?" Shay fidgeted as her brother glares at her and Jorge.

"Shay, found us and listened to our reason for being here," Jorge states before looking to the elders and mentioning, "We are Spartans, here to recon the Balmera and her people before commencing an attack on the Galra forces."

"They came to destroy us," Shay's brother states.

"No, we came to see if it would be safe to engage the Galra, without hurting the Balmera or any civilian targets, like yourselves," Jorge answers, "Please understand that if you feel that it is too dangerous to attack the Galra here please tell me now."

The elder was silent before sighing and says, "I am afraid that this will be a lost cause. You see, the Balmera is dying, all of her energy is being depleted faster than it can be returned. The Galra have been taking and never returning the energy, we fear that the Balmera will not last much longer."

"What is the Energy that the Balmera requires?" Jorge asks in concern.

"It requires Quintesence to live and protect us," the elder states.

Shay adds, "The Balmera grows our food with the same Quintesence that she uses to grow the Power Crystals."

"What would happen to the Balmera if your people weren't here?" Jorge asks.

"The Balmera would be unable to survive for long," the Elder states.

"Why are you really here?" the Brother asks with Shay appearing upset at his words.

"We want to deal a blow to the Galra, helping you and your people will do just that," Jorge admits while the brother glares at the Spartan. Jorge then states, "Do you want our help?"

"Of course not," the brother shouts only to be silenced by the elder raised hand.

"If you can save the Balmera we would be grateful," the Elder states before asking, "but the Balmera does not have long."

Jorge nods in understanding as he says, "Hopefully the princess will know what to do for your people, but we need to remove the Galra first. It will take several days before we can begin the assault," Jorge pulled out a make that was made by the Green Lion, "Can you show me where the largest concentrations of your people are?" the Elders and Shay gave him the information freely as Jorge compiled all the information before saying, "My team should have returned by now with those supplies for your people. The Galra don't know we are here, we would like to keep it secret until the battle."

Shay's brother glares before the elder states, "Very well, as long as our people are not in danger."

"As long as you remain hidden there should not be any issues, besides Galra deciding to move you," Jorge states before standing and says, "Thank you for your assistance once our supplies are shared we will leave without being noticed as we planned."

Shay's brother had one final question, "How can you expect to live after going against the Galra?"

"Spartans don't we just go missing," Jorge states before heading out the hut as the S3s finished handing out supplies.

Shay rushed after Jorge and the S3s and quickly states, "I am sorry for my brother."

Jorge raised a hand and says, "That is okay ma'am, he has no reason to trust us and he was being careful in this situation. It is completely understandable. For now we need to get back to the others with our intel. We will be back as quickly as we can." Shay nods in understanding before they reached the Green Lion's landing zone where they find the craft that de-cloaked for a moment surprising Shay, "We have our ways to fight," with that Jorge and the S3s walked through the field cloaking the Green Lion and they climbed inside quickly as possible before it flew out the hole they were in un-detected. Though the next morning Shay's Brother informed the Galra about the attack, only when it did not happen that day, he would be punished for lying to them.

Arus-That day-while Jorge was at the Balmera

The Master Chief was assisting, Alura, Coran, Doctor Halsey and Cortana in the repairs of the castle, they had been delayed due to some systems suffering some glitches as they were activated shut down due failure in the systems. They had intended to target the Balmera but as he was helping with the repairs he also had a read out on the data that Cortana stole from the Galra computers. The data had supply routes, some Galra bases along with the locations of four other Balmeras. His job was to decide where to go next after the Balmera if they were able to engage the Galra there.

Currently the Chief was repairing the a Shield Emitter, just outside the hull, the Red Lion has actually melting rocks around the base of the castle to reach the damaged sections of the hull underground so he could help repair the damaged systems with Kelly, Fred and Linda, their armour able to handle the extra heat from melted stone. Six was inside the castle ready with his lion in case of an emergency. The Chief finished up his repairs before heading to the next set of repairs needing to be done. At the rate they were going, the repairs would be done by dawn the next day.

The Chief's repairs were interrupted as Doctor Halsey contacted the Chief, "John, the Castle's sensors are detecting the Green Lion is returning. We can figure out what they got when they return. For now, we have been able to repair the main drives so we can move but the defence systems are taking longer than we were expecting."

"We won't be engaging the Galra until the Castle's defences are repaired and operational," the Chief states before asking, "How is the installation of the UNSC armaments?"

"The systems are not playing nice, or at least they didn't until Cortana and myself have managed to write the programs needed to work the two systems. The turrets have been installed in the sections you decided and have been successfully concealed by the armour segments. Though Coran and myself have modified a Havoc Nuke deploying device. The problem is we only have three of the devices," Doctor Halsey states in annoyance.

The Chief simply states, "There is nothing wrong with that, they are only to be used in a extreme emergency. We should not need it unless we are trying to escape the battle."

"Then I hope that you are ready to consequences," Doctor Halsey states before closing the call.

The Chief was silent at that before continuing his repairs of the castle using Cortana's assisted diagrams for the systems he was repairing. The repairs would take time for the Spartans until they were ready. He continued his repairs for another hour when Allura contacted him, "Master Chief, please come to the bridge we need to plan for the Balmera."

The Chief silently acknowledged the order and went to the castle's front door of the castle where some of the Locals were helping with security for the time being until all the Spartans returned to the Castle. Once inside he went to the elevator to reach the bridge quickly before finding out that Allura called in Fred and Six as well as Doctor Halsey, Halsey appearing very upset holding Cortana's Chip, handing it to the Chief. The room was silent as Coran arrived and Allura began the meeting, "I would have preferred it for all the Paladins to be here to decide our next move. I feel that we should focus on worlds that have been requesting our help."

The Chief frowns before stating, "We should target the Balmeras first, infiltrate to speak with the locals and then remove the Galra, that way we reduce the number of ships they can build and then target their facilities. In between we help those needing help."

Allura frowns before stating, "We need to stop the Galra and save as many people as we can, we cannot afford to go slow."

The Chief was calm before stating, "We are not an army and there is only one Voltron, until we have an army or the resources to fight the Galra constantly." The Chief starts walking away.

Allura spoke, "Spartan we are not done," the Chief was silent as he walked away to continue repairing the Castle. Allura growls and says, "We need to decide where to go first. Almost the entire Galaxy has been taken over by the Galra, we do not have time to not have Voltron fight the Galra!" Fred and Six sighs before leaving as well disappointing Allura as they appeared to agree with the Chief. Allura states, "I am meant to be leading the Voltron Coalition."

Doctor Halsey sighs and says, "That was your first mistake," Allura blinks before the Doctor continues, "The Master Chief has lost almost all of his brothers and sisters in the war against the Covenant. The reason was because of the Leadership making poor choices. The biggest of which was the fall of Reach. After which only Seven other Spartans were known to have survived. That battle, not including the Chief or Linda. You have lost your world and your father but you still have Coran, this Castle and the Lions. John would ensure that still had that for as long as possible. The Chief is looking long term in this war, at least until we have more allies and options to fight the Galra." Allura was silent before hearing Doctor Halsey state, "Now if he was listening to Cortana, he knows to meet me in the training room, I have some new Armour Modules for the Spartan's to use, after they have been tested."

Doctor Halsey left simply as Allura continued to frown, Fred spoke up, "I am going to return to repairing the Castle, so then we can be ready," he and Six left to continue their jobs. Allura frowns before looking back to the star maps of the Castle and was trying to make her own plans for after the Balmera.

Training Room-Half hour later

The Chief walked into the training room after Doctor Halsey stated that she was ready. What he found was Doctor Halsey typing on her tablet as she completed the final calibrations to what appeared to be an Armour Module. The Chief alerted Doctor Halsey of his presence by saying, "Doctor."

Doctor Halsey looked to the Chief and says, "You have arrived early John, another two minutes and we can begin the tests of this new piece of equipment. Unfortunately only will be getting this version, it works along with Cortana's assistance. Due to the nature of the Altean technology we have been able to access, I have successfully developed three new armour abilities that can be mass produced to work with the SPI armours and basic ODST equipment. Though I am sure you will be happy to know that this equipment will be beneficial to all situations that even Spartans hate being forced into. Do you remember them?"

"Zero Gravity, lack of a weapon in a fire fight and not enough ammo to go around," The Chief states simply.

Cortana continued, "Medal Ceramonies, public displays of support and private meetings with ONI."

"Unfortunately I am referring to combat. I have developed equipment to handle these situations," Doctor Halsey admits, "You version unfortunately can only be used with Cortana to switch between the three modes. Installation is simple Cortana can run you through that before we begin the test, please leave your rifle on the table but keep your sidearm. It will be needed for the test."

The Chief nods as Cortana explains installation. The Chief placed the device on his lower back before heading to the centre of the room. The Chief took a step as gravity failed and Cortana started speaking, "Engaging Zero Gravity Tethers," with that a set of micro thrusters and grappling launchers were formed on his armour. The Chief was able to move easily before a pair of tethers launched at the wall and the Chief was able to get his footing before a set of targets were formed before the Chief opened fire. He hit the targets without issue before he started dodging as they fired back.

The Chief was able to move easily in the environment before Doctor Halsey asks, "How does it feel John?"

"Honestly Doctor, I am surprised this took so long," the Chief states getting a laugh from Cortana and considering that the Chief was being honest with that. The Chief landed on the ground before asking, "What is next doctor?"

"Holster your pistol John, this next module will not require it," The Chief nods to Doctor Halsey's words before letting his equipment to recharge enough to test the next system, "Listen John, your module will be different compared to the others in that, the charge requirements would mean that your body's natural impulses to assist with recharging the Module, so the more you exert your it will recharge faster. Now activate the module," the Chief did just that revealing him now to be holding a large energy machete. Doctor Halsey states, "The main Modules with be weapons with energy ammunition for longer range. Voltron's battle has illustrated that close range weapons are effective against the Galra."

With that a Training Drone was deployed and the Chief defended with the new energy based weapon and as able to slash through quickly ending the battle. The Chief was able to use the weapon easily he did not like the lack of weight the weapon that physically did not exist, the weapon vanished when the charge failed.

Doctor Halsey asks, "What do you think of this module John?"

"It is rather interesting Doctor, can the weapon be changed?" The Chief questioned.

"I can make modifications but you will need to test this module again," Doctor Halsey states causing the Chief to nod in understanding before the Doctor continued, "Though when fully charged I estimate that you will have ten slashes before it powers down. Now we can try the last module once the system is fully charged. Chief draw your sidearm," that was when another training Drone stood ahead of the Chief but did not move as several barriers appeared behind the drone. "Once your Module is charged activate it and fire one shot at the drone," the Chief activated the module and was ready to fire as he pulled the trigger. The result was the bullet penetrating the Drone and through the Barriers and through two walls before stopping. The result on the Chief was him being thrown through the air and through the doors smashing through and leaving the Chief on the ground, "JOHN!"

The issue was that the Chief landed on his back as Allura had arrived to speak with the Chief. Doctor Halsey, Fred, Kelly, Linda, Chief Mendez and Coran rushed to the area in concern for the Chief only for the Spartans, Doctor Halsey and Chief Mendez to freeze when they heard the Chief and Cortana chuckling in his suit. The Chief sits up as Cortana says, "Well that was one bullet on the amplifier, I recommend lowering the output for multiple shots in the future."

The Chief was standing as he says, "I suggest that you also keep that setting for emergencies." The Chief stands and checks his pistol to find the barrel melted through, "Our weapons will need to updated to handle the strain, Doctor."

Doctor Halsey looks at the former weapon that the Chief unloaded and kept hold on as it was still hot. Allura asks, "What happened?"

"Testing new equipment developed by Doctor Halsey. All of which I approve of Doctor. Please continue development," the Chief informed the creator of the Spartan Program.

Allura though asks, "What kind of equipment could you need that does this?"

The Chief answered, "The kind of equipment that will help us with the Galra. Perhaps you or Coran can assist the Doctor with the development."

Coran fiddled with his moustache as he says, "Well I will have to request that all testing be done outside the Castle."

Doctor Halsey nods in agreement as they looked to the damage as she says, "I did not expect this much damage the Barriers from the invisible Maze did not handle the power behind the shot. The recoil is too dangerous for normal soldiers to use at that level, I will reduce the output depending on the weapon I can have the Module divide the output for a full clip of the weapon being used." Doctor Halsey was typing notes on the Module modifications.

The Chief was silent before turning to Fred, Kelly and Linda, "Repairs?"

Fred answered, "The emitters around the base of the castle have been repaired they just need to be tested. Six is still waiting in the Red Lion for any attack."

The Chief nods before asking, "The prisoners?"

"Still in stasis pods," Mendez states before adding, "Pity we cannot interrogate him while in the pods."

The Chief frowns before asking, "How was Alfor's memories installed into the castle?"

Coran answered, "A willing Altean can have their memories copied into a special tube that holds the memories for future viewing. But it has never been used on an unwilling mind."

The Chief frowns before commenting, "Then could partial information be taken from Semdak's memories." Coran could not answer.

The answer came from Cortana who asks, "Would it work it work if he was unaware of the device and while he is in the pods?"

Doctor Halsey comments, "The S3s were able to hear me speak with Jorge about the Galra before they stepped out and asked their own questions of him. They were more open with asking him questions."

The Chief nods before asking, "How long until the other modules are ready?"

"A short period of time after the Castle launches," Doctor Halsey states before adding, "any improvements you can suggest John?"

"A couple tethers for quick movements for everyone and," the Chief was silent before looking to the room and asking, "Can the training rooms equipment replicate objects and people you scan?"

Doctor Halsey's eyes widen before she comments, "Thank you for reminding everyone why you are the favourite." Doctor Halsey then steps away from everyone to complete a secret mission given to her.

Allura asks, "Favourite?"

Fred, Kelly and Linda nods before Fred comments, "The Chief was the first chosen to be a Spartan," Fred looks at the damaged room and walks away while silently saying to Kelly and Linda, "Good thing too, no one could survive like he can when she invents something for us Spartans," getting two nods of agreement.

The Chief retreated to the Black Lion's hanger where Cortana states, "You know I recorded that and set it to every member of the team right?"

"You would not be you if you did not," The Chief states as he went over to a terminal where Cortana was translating words for him to read so he could recognise specific words in Galra, Altean, Forerunner, the Covenant written language and the Universal Languages that many cultures in this region of space communicate with. Though he was also reviewing information on Galra machinery that would explode in his face when attempting to deactivate. Either way he was preparing himself better then the Covenant War so he could help everyone, several hours later, Jorge and his team returned.

Castle of Lions-Training room

Fortunately the holographic systems of the training room was working so that they could have the meeting in an open area that would allow them to see the information that they collected. The biggest of which was the locations of all Galra facilities on the Balmera. Everyone was standing to the sides as Jorge starts the meeting, "Well we found where the Galra are located on the planet but we also discovered that they don't have much time, they have over mined the Energy Crystals of the Balmera and now her people are starving and dying of illness unless we can undo the damage to the Balmera."

Coran spoke up, "Then it is obvious that they did not perform the Energy Ritual to help the Balmera recover their energy."

The Chief frowns before asking, "What do you need for this ritual?"

"More energy then we could supply. King Alfor never took more than was needed," Coran states.

"Then we need to find a way, or we will have to evacuated the Balmera," The Chief states surprising Doctor Halsey and Chief Mendez.

"There is a couple hundred thousand living on the Balmera," Jorge states.

"We can bring them back to Arus afterwards it should be able to sustain the Balmerias. Am I right with my assumption?" The Chief questions.

"You would be asking them to leave their home," Allura states concerned.

"If the Balmera is dying, I would rather have them safe and alive," The Chief states getting nods from the Spartan IIs and Six before he continues, "If the Balmera is dying it does not stop her people from living on. What is the chances of civilian casualties?"

Allura was offended as Jorge states, "As long as we keep the fighting towards the surface the Balmerans will stay as far down as they can to avoid any fighting."

Allura apparently had enough as she says, "You cannot treat this people as obstacles instead of living beings!"

Everyone looked to Allura as Jorge states, "It means we can go in with minimal risk to Shay and her people, Princess. If they were being used as 'Human' shields then we would not be planning this attack."

Allura blinks before Cortana speaks up and says, "according to the Green Lions scans that Tom and Lucy collected we could reprogram the Drone Fighters to protect the Balmera from Galra attack."

"Meaning our targets are the main mining facilities, the Hanger and then clean up of the tunnels in the Balmera," The Chief states.

Fred frowns before commenting, "While we are doing that, what about the Lions?"

The Chief looks to Doctor Halsey who nods simply causing Chief to say, "This is the plan," and gave the most simple and complex plan at the same time.

That moment-outside UNSC space-Mother of Invention.

Admiral Ackerson stood in front of a score board as it adjusted the names, his 'Agents' had just destroyed an alien facility controlled by purple aliens that have called themselves the 'Galra' resulting in the destruction of an army of slaves that was met with no resistance as they discovered that the slaves were dying anyway from the fumes of the mines. The issue was what was being mined was a material known as lead. The test run though was for the testing of his Agents' new Artificial Intelligence fragments having been installed in their suits. He was happy with the results but the news he was about to receive.

"Sir, Agent Washington has gone Awol after stealing a ship from the enemy combatants," a Spartan wearing Aqua armour with an angular helmet.

Ackerson growls and says, "Find him and kill him!"

Castle of Lions-Next day-mid afternoon

All the Spartans, Alteans, Doctor Halsey and Chief Mendez was strapped in the main bridge as Allura and Coran started the Castles' launch sequence. They would have launched that morning, only Allura and the Chief went to say goodbye to the locals of Arus, the Chief warning the people where they can stand to watch the Castle of the Lion Goddess would return to the heavens to protect the innocent from evil. Currently the people of Arus was on the mountain range as the castle launched with no danger to others. The Castle reached Space quickly before Jorge says, "Let's go save the Balmera."
