Chapter 6
As soon as Aizawa had announced the name of the exercise class 1-A was going to do, Iida's arm shot up in the air with as much enthusiasm only he the class representative, could muster. Before he was able to use his voice, Aizawa beat him to the punch by holding up his hand lazily in order to stop the boy.
"Let me explain what's going to happen before asking any questions," Aizawa's bloodshot eyes narrowed as he gazed at Iida, waiting for him to put down his hand before he wanted to continue.
"Yes! That was careless of me! Of course, please explain further for this exercise," Iida yelled enthusiastically as he firmly put his hand at his side.
Aizawa cleared his throat as a way to get the other students his attention once again. "You will all be put in small teams of four in a big game of 'last man standing' dodge ball." Aizawa explained as he pulled a ball out of his pocket, "As a hero you will have to be able to keep calm in chaotic situations, being able to defend yourself and your team, while also focusing on offense." Aizawa almost slurred his words, not even trying to cover up that he was lacking sleep as of late. He started to play with the ball in his hand slightly, most likely to keep himself from sleeping right then and there while he was explaining everything to the class. "You're not allowed to touch other people from the opposite teams and you're not allowed to ruin the balls, otherwise it will count as a hit and you're out. You are allowed to - or should I say, you are expected to use your quirks as you see fit to be the last team standing."
As soon as Aizawa was done explaining, the class started to cheer.
"Waaah, I'm starting to get excited for this!" Kaminari said with a smile, followed suit by Mina and some of the others from the class.
Uraraka swallowed hard as she looked over at her classmates. This exercise sounded like it would be very chaotic and her quirk wouldn't be of much help as she wouldn't be allowed to touch the other teams.
"Settle down and we will set up the teams by drawing lots," Aizawa announced with a bored tone, scratching his chin absentmindedly.
Finally having set the teams for the exercise, Uraraka wanted to fake an injury or something so she didn't have to participate. She could feel the blood rush away from her face and she almost forgot to breathe.
"Isn't this great Uraraka? We'll be on the same team," Mineta said with a drool out of his almost smirking mouth, his fingers were wiggling around in the air.
Uraraka slowly took a step away from the purple grape boy, "y-yeah, sure is."
Although being on a team together with Mineta was not something she was looking forward to, as it was well known in the class about his perverse tendencies, he wasn't the reason why the blood had escaped her face.
"Watch your hands or I will explode all your sticky balls off your stupid face," Bakugou growled as he grabbed one of Mineta's balls and blasted it off in a single explosion from one of his hands.
Mineta whined silently, not really daring to talk back to the growling and explosive blond, clutching his balls on his head protectively.
And there he was, the reason why Uraraka felt like darting out of the area as fast as she could. The main attraction from her dream last night. Bakugou Katsuki. The sudden sweet scent of caramel got blasted through the air from his explosion, which immediately reminded her of the kiss from her dream. Suddenly all the blood came back to her face and more so as well. She felt like floating off into the sky.
"Come on guys, let's get along, alright?" Ojiro said with a small yet calm voice, his smile reassuring and sent Uraraka slowly back into reality.
Mineta nodded knowingly at Bakugou, who clicked with his tongue in annoyance as he shoved his hands into his pockets.
"So," Aizawa interrupted all the small chatter amongst the students, clearing his throat, "it seems the teams are as follows: 'team one: Sero, Jiro, Iida and Asui,' 'team two: Uraraka, Bakugou, Ojiro and Mineta,' 'team three: Shoji, Midoriya, Ashido and Kaminari,' 'team four: Kirishima, Sato, Aoyama and Todoroki,' and lastly, 'team five: Hagakure, Tokoyami, Koda, and Yaoyorozu.' You all have five minutes to come up with a plan to defend and attack. Go into each of your team's circles together. It's not allowed to get out of the lines."
As Uraraka and her team walked over to one of the circles that were drawn on the ground, she could feel her body heat slightly and her heart beating just that beat faster than it did earlier. Why did she have to be on the same team as Bakugou? Uraraka shook her head. No, having him on the team might be a huge boost to the team, thinking of his skills. She shouldn't be complaining about being on the same team with one of the top students in their class.
"So how do we do this?" Ojiro asked with his gentle voice, looking at all his teammates.
"Tail-boy and I will be on the offensive, while StickyBalls and Cheeks will defend," Bakugou stated as a matter of factly as if there could be no other formation than that.
"That's not my name though," was all Mineta and Ojiro whispered mostly to themselves in unison. Uraraka had already gotten used to the nickname he had given to her and it didn't really bother her. Much.
It didn't take long after Aizawa announced the start of the exercise until complete chaos erupted from around them. Each team had started with a ball each, which meant that now five balls were being thrown through the air, some helped by the quirk of their classmates.
Uraraka didn't really know why she and Mineta were being in charge of their defenses, as Uraraka especially had no ball-eye whatsoever. She felt like she could hardly keep up with any of the balls that flew above her head. Though to her big surprise, Mineta did surprisingly well at defense, using his balls from his head to catch the ones coming nearby and then he handed the ball over to, mostly Bakugou, who used his exploding quirk to blast it off and towards some of the other teams.
It didn't take long before two teams were already wiped out by the three powerhouses from the class, Todoriki, Midoriya, and Bakugou. The last standing teams were theirs, team two, team three, and team four. The rest of the class had been ushered to the side by Aizawa, to make sure they weren't in the way. Being punished by having to practice on their quirks while the exercise was still going on.
A few of the members from each team were sent away slowly as the exercise went on. Aoyama from team four was the first to go as he froze from anxiety when Midoriya sent the ball flying his way. He gasped in shock when he found out the ball wasn't thrown that hard, relieved that he wasn't going to get a mark on his apparently sensitive skin. Kaminari and Ashido from team three were sent off immediately after each other. As Kirishima and Ojiro from the opposing teams had sent a ball flying relatively at the same time. However, Shoji picked up a few balls and sent them towards team two, hitting Ojiro and Mineta without fail as they had their eyes on the falling members from team three.
"Shit! Keep your heads in the game next time, will you!" Bakugou barked as their two team members had to leave the circle they were in.
Suddenly a silence fell over the last standing members of each team. They all widened their stance and carefully prepared themselves for the next attack.
Uraraka's pulse was slowly increasing to a faster beat against her chest, she had slowly forgotten all about the reasons why she would be nervous near Bakugou, although when they were the last two in the team, she suddenly remembered everything all over again and it made her legs feel like they were filled with lead. She had to do something, they had to win, but what? Her body was feeling out of control and her mind was starting to get all foggy.
"Fucking Hell!" Bakugou's voice pushed her out of her thoughts as she realized that she was sitting on the ground. Bakugou was standing right in front of her, holding a ball he just caught. "Focus Cheeks!" Bakugou barked without looking back at her, he had to keep his eyes on their opponents as he blasted the ball off against one of their opponents, hitting Sato right on the shoulder, effectively eliminating him from the exercise. A small grin spread across Bakugou's face as he saw Sato leave the ring.
Only two of each of the three teams were left, five balls still in play and Bakugou and Uraraka had none.
"I'm sorry!" Uraraka almost squeaked as she tried her best to get back up on her legs again.
"Then do better next time!" Bakugou growled as he slid his body slightly to the side in order to avoid a flying ball coming his way. "As long as you're here, these losers will hold back," he smiled to himself.
"Wh-what?" Uraraka blinked as she obliviously avoided a flying ball coming her way.
"Think about it for a second Cheeks, ever since it's just been the two of us, they hardly throw hard let alone use their quirks over here. Those losers are underestimating you, and I'm going to take advantage of that," Bakugou smirked in Uraraka's direction, making her heart do a little flip flop before it settled down again quickly.
"Alright," Uraraka took a step next to Bakugou, "let's do this then. What do you need me to do?"
Uraraka knew that if she had to trust anybody in this kind of thing, it would have to be the gifted Bakugou. Sure, he was rough around the edges, but when it came to this sort of thing, he was an elite. But, when Bakugou laughed and said: "Throw me after using your quirk on me," she had to admit, she might be slightly hesitant.
"What?" she almost breathed, looking at the strong hand he was reaching out to her for her to touch, without looking at her. He was carefully watching the other teams.
"Now!" Bakugou shouted and without thinking, Uraraka grabbed his warm and firm arm in her soft and delicate hands. She activated her quirk and swung him around as she pivoted to gain acceleration and threw Bakugou against the other teams up in the air.
It was the first time she had ever laid a hand on his warm skin and it shortly surprised her how soft his skin felt and how hot it was. Most likely because of his explosions. She tried to ignore the sudden jump in her heart for the short second she touched him, she didn't need this right now, she had to focus.
Bakugou was almost flying through the air, steering the direction with his explosions and went straight against Kirishima. He looked as if he was about to blast his hardened skin off, Kirishima immediately tried to cover himself with his arms. In the last second, Bakugou pulled out one of the balls he apparently had hidden somewhere and softly, to Uraraka's surprise and maybe also the other's, almost rolled the ball onto Kirishima who didn't have the time to react before it was too late. Bakugou then used Kirishima's hardened body to jump off it, never touching the ground before he flipped around, caught one of the balls that were thrown after him and sent it off towards Shoji who was too occupied with trying to throw a ball after Uraraka, that he hadn't seemed to notice the blond. Within a few seconds, two of the opposing team's members were eliminated from the exercise.
Bakugou used his explosions to get out of the way and back towards the ring where Uraraka was standing all the while he used it to shield for a ball Midoriya had thrown after him, effectively making the ball drop down on the ground.
"Now Cheeks!" He yelled as he was practically above her in the air and without thinking too much about it, Uraraka instinctively pressed her fingertips together and released her quirk, letting Bakugou fall back down on the ground next to her. She let out a sigh of relief when he was able to use a small explosion from his hands to soften the landing.
"Not too bad," Bakugou smirked.
Uraraka's eyes widened when she saw the recognizable blue electricity surround Midoriya as he took one of the balls from the ground that was near his circle as he threw it against Todoroki, the ball went off with a frightening speed and power and Todoroki panickedly activated his ice to form a wall to protect himself and suddenly a loud crack was heard when the ball broke through the ice and hit Todoroki on his chest. His eyes were most likely wider than Uraraka's, as the ball got in contact with him and he looked through the hole to see Midoriya's smile.
"Oh damn," Uraraka breathed in barely a whisper as she silently watched Todoroki's eyes fall apart and out of the corner of her eye, she saw that smile on Bakugou's lips that could send shivers down anyone's back. Uraraka almost shuttered.
Only Uraraka, Bakugou, and Midoriya were left in their circles. Two against one.
