Saturday they finally had time to just relax. The week had been hectic and there hadn't been time to talk for days. They had passed in the hallway and walked to and from work and daycare as a family but that was it. Teddy was trying to figure out how to move forward. Tuesday night he had really kissed her, she wanted it but was afraid. The feelings she had spent the last year and a bit pushing down telling herself she couldn't feel that she couldn't be with him had come flooding back. But today they were spending the morning as a family. Something that she had spent years imagining her, Owen, and two kids, one of each, it was her perfect fantasy but she didn't trust it. She couldn't trust it.
"Let's go across the hall to daddy's for breakfast," Teddy told Allison.
Teddy walked across the landing with Allison in her arms. Owen had told her it was a cozy casual morning. She chose to leave Allison in her sleeper and changed her pajamas for leggings and a loose sweater. Teddy knocked softly and Owen opened the door. She smiled seeing him in sweats and a T-shirt they could just relax and maybe figure out their next steps. Owen greeted them both with a hug.
"Leo, look who's here," Owen said.
"Ali weddy," Leo yelled.
Teddy crouched, "good morning Leo. Allison can you give your brother five?"
Owen smiled watching Teddy and the kids. They were both his kids but were they her kids? Could they be her kids? Could Leo be hers? Owen wanted that, he was disappointed she had never told him about Allison, but was trying to understand why. She was Teddy.
Teddy beamed at the two kids on the floor Allison in her purple sleeper covered in butterflies and Leo in his paw patrol pajamas.
Owen knelt beside them, "I don't know what I have for her to play with."
"Blocks," Teddy said, "her monkey. As long as she can't eat it we're good."
"I'll put the cars and animals away," Owen said.
Owen picked up the two bins with the dangerous toys and slid them into his room. While Leo had stopped putting cars and plastic animals into his mouth they were the perfect size for Allison to choke on.
Seeing the kids playing happily for now Owen pulled Teddy into a real hug and a gentle kiss. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in closer.
"Kids," Owen whispered as he pulled away gently.
"I know," Teddy said.
"Breakfast then what do you want to do today," Owen said, "I want time with just Allison this weekend. I need to get to know my daughter."
"I had some grocery shopping to go do and a few other errands," Teddy said, "I could take Leo with me. Tomorrow we could go hike around the tower."
"With two kids," Owen asked.
"She still fits in the baby carrier and I already ordered the next size up so it's sturdier for him," Teddy suggested.
"We could," Owen said, "can you watch them while I finish breakfast?"
"I can," Teddy said.
"Has she eaten," Owen asked.
"Not solids yet," Teddy said, "she usually shares my breakfast for that."
"I have eggs, sausages and toast," Owen said, "I couldn't find pancake mix."
"Ask Megan," Teddy said, "pancake mix, peanut butter, good taco seasoning, peanut butter cups."
"How do you get them," Owen asked.
"Arizona," Teddy said, "I send her money to ship a bunch of that stuff to me every couple months. She sent a box last week that should be here soon I'll share."
"I'll ask my mom," Owen said, "or Meg."
"Megan said she sent a box for Allison earlier this week," Teddy said.
"She sent something for Leo," Owen agreed.
"We should send things to Faroke," Teddy replied, "I'll do it this time. I have a few things already."
"What are we," Owen asked as he cooked.
"We have to figure that out," Teddy said, "I can't go back to being just your friend. I want more than that. We have two kids."
"Could we date," Owen asked, looking tentative.
"I want to," Teddy answered.
"Leo," Owen said, "my son and our daughter have to come first. Teddy can you be part of his life?"
"I want to be," Teddy said, "maybe our kids?"
"Our kids," Owen said, "I like that. I know it's a lot to ask you."
"Its not. Our kids. We each have one to bond with," Teddy said, " I could do this. I want to do this. I said it the other night Owen I won't be your second choice. I can't be your second choice. I let myself do that for almost 20 years. I didn't see that I wasn't being fair to myself until Allison. I know it's selfish this time Owen I have to set a good example for Allison."
"Teddy I should never have done that to you," Owen said, "you should have been my first choice when we met. I was scared two. I felt things I've only felt with you. You didn't give me a chance here. You hid her from me. When I didn't call back you should have emailed or texted for me to call you. I get that you didn't want to write it, you wanted to tell me yourself. Don't you think I would have been here if I knew. I wanted you and you threw me out. You rejected me."
"Because you told me Ameila sent you," Teddy hissed, she wanted to yell but knew they couldn't with two kids there.
"I know," Owen said, "as soon as it was out of my mouth I knew it was stupid. Teddy why? You told Megan Allison existed but not me."
"I couldn't make her an obligation for you," Teddy said, "I assumed that you didn't want anything to do with me when you didn't call me back. When I showed up at your door greeted by a teenager. I didn;t think there was room in your life for me anymore."
"You gave up," Owen said.
"I had to," Teddy said, "I was spiralling. I couldn't think, I could hardly function. I thought I drove you away for good. I couldn't handle it. When I thought you were gone for good I was as much of a mess as when I lost Henry. Probably worse."
"You gave up on her," Owen said, "that she needed her father."
"I was trying to figure out how to tell you without destroying your life," Teddy said, "that night why did you come?"
"Because I love you," Owen said, "I was coming to talk and to spend time with you. I just wanted to see you."
"Seducing me ending up in my bed," Teddy asked.
"That wasn't part of my plan," Owen said, "I didn't expect that. I was coming to be with you. To talk about us. I told you that night. There's nothing standing between us. Teddy you have to believe me."
"You went back to her," Teddy said, "you went back to Ameila."
"We were never together that way again," Owen said, "she came to help me figure out getting Leo settled then she found Betty and they moved in. Ameila went between my place and Merideths. She never lived there fully, she stayed to help with Leo and Betty."
"You adopted a child with her," Teddy said.
"No," Owen said, "I signed up to be a foster parent and open to doing foster to adopt. I didn't expect an infant but I did the forms and the home study. With my background it was easy. After you threw me out then never called I thought it would be me and Leo. My mom was around and helped a lot. She misses Leo. Megan came up to meet Leo and operate with Grey. she gave me a good kick in the ass. She forced me to finally get help and realize I could be happy that I'm allowed to be happy."
"How does that work with you being here," Teddy asked.
"I asked to go back to a military role," Owen said, "I realized that was when I was happiest at work. When my work really mattered."
"Here," Teddy asked.
"I go where I'm told," Owen said.
"You would have been given a choice of two postings," Teddy said.
"Here or Florida," Owen said, "you're here. I chose here because of you. Teddy I want to work this out. I want to be together. You and me, the kids, we can do this. There's nothing to stop us."
"How do I know this is real," Teddy asked.
"Because I'm here and I'm not going anywhere," Owen said, "we can build our family here. Us and two kids. Remember those nights we used to sit and day dream in the sand?"
"Two kids, one of each, a white picket fence, a dog," Teddy said, "thats a dream. You never wanted that with me. Beth, Christina, Ameila."
"I did," Owen said, "I never knew how to tell you. I didn't know you felt the same way."
"You were always with someone else," Teddy said, "I decided that it was better to be your friend then not have you in my life at all. When I lost you that broke me. The first week home with Allison I laid on my bed with her crying for you. I wanted you, I needed you, I wanted you to hold me and tell me I would be okay but I couldn't put myself in that position again of being your second choice, being an obligation. I knew about Leo, Megan never told me exactly but she said Owen and Leo we're here and Leo is the cutest little guy. I figured it out."
"Why didn't she tell me about Allison," Owen said.
"I think she assumed we were talking to each other and you knew," Teddy said, "it's not like she's seen Allison in person just on facetime."
"Teddy I'm sorry," Owen said, "I should have called or emailed when six months went by without a word. I worried about you but thought you didn't want me anymore."
"I know," Teddy said, "I shouldn't have given up I'm sorry."
"I should have known something was going on," Owen said, "we've fought before but never like that. It felt worse than my divorces put together. To know you were gone that I had lost you. I should have called when I didn't hear from you."
"I'm sorry," Teddy said.
"I am too," Owen said, "sorry I didn't realize it sooner, sorry I wasn't brave enough years ago. Teddy we could have been together years ago I was too stubborn to see it."
"I didn't make you see me either," Teddy said, "I didn't want you to be unhappy."
"I know," Owen said, pulling her close, "I know you."
"I wanted to tell you," Teddy said into his shoulder, "I wanted to call you every day since I found out. I should have called every day until you answered."
"I'm here now," Owen said, "I know now. We can work this out Teddy."
"What if we can't," Teddy asked.
"We're going to try like hell," Owen said, "we know each other we have history. We know there's chemistry."
"We can't end up in bed again," Teddy said, "Not yet."
"We can build up to it," Owen said, "I would like to take you on a real date. No kids but I don't have a babysitter I could call. In Seattle I had lots."
"I have a few we can call. Have them watch both at my place," Teddy offered.
"When," Owen asked.
"Next weekend I need to call either of the two at least a week ahead; they book up fast," Teddy said.
"I'll find somewhere nice," Owen said, "good food, wine, maybe music."
"A real date,"Teddy smiled.
"We can do this. Teddy I want to do this. Us our kids," Owen said.
"Our kids both of them," Teddy confirmed.
"Build it up, let them get to know each other," Owen said.
"They seem okay," Teddy said.
"So let's have breakfast then that hike you wanted to do," Owen asked.
"Drive there so we can get groceries and diapers on the way back," Teddy said.
"I need diapers," Owen said.
"I'll drive," Teddy said.
"I don't have a car yet," Owen said.
"We could get away with one car," Teddy said, "what did you do with your truck?"
"At moms," Owen said, "I rented out my house."
"Did you buy this place," Teddy asked.
"Six months rental," Owen said, "I told myself six months and if it wasn't what I expected or working for Leo I would go back to Seattle. It's a six month trial."
"I know," Teddy said.
"Six months to figure us out," Owen said.
"Six months to decide what's best for us and our kids," Teddy said, "I like it here."
"I can see why," Owen said.
"If we're figuring this family thing out does it make sense to do double sets of groceries," Teddy asked.
"Do we want to do dinner every night," Owen asked.
"I'll actually be motivated to make real food," Teddy said, "I often just throw a salad or something together because it's just me or order roast chicken."
"Let's try it this week," Owen suggested, "I'll cook I think I'm done earlier than you are."
"I have a spare key," Teddy said, "are we there?"
"I'd like to be able to bring Allison home and get her stuff," Owen said.
"I'll grab it later," Teddy said, "you can see her anytime you want. I want time with Leo."
"Any time," Owen said, "our kids."
"We have some parent decisions to make together," Teddy said.
"Daycare w'ell leave them at we both chose it," Owen said.
"Bed time," Teddy asked.
"Seven thirty," Owen said.
"I do seven with her," Teddy said, "then she's up around 6 for the day."
"We're about the same," Owen said, "naps?"
"Morning and afternoon about two hours each, " Teddy said.
"Afternoon about two and a half," Owen said.
"Time," Teddy asked.
"Oneish." Owen said.
"One thirty," Teddy replied.
"One fifteen," Owen suggested.
"Sure," Teddy said, "we'll work it out. I like her on a routine and to have a bedtime. We have a bedtime routine."
"So do we," Owen said, "bath, glass of milk, brush teeth, story in bed, song and lights out."
"Bath, milk, story and cuddle, song, in her bed," Teddy smiled.
"Story together," Owen proposed.
"I like doing story time," Teddy said, "you can sing."
They sat down with the kids to have their breakfast Leo in a booster seat and Allison in Teddy's lap. Owen took a baby spoon and dipped it into some yogurt giving it to Allison.
"She hasn't tried yogurt yet," Teddy said.
"She likes it," Owen said.
"The bird face," Teddy said.
"She is," Owen said.
Teddy picked up Leo's fork and put it back in his hand, "Leo use your fork."
"No," Leo said, dropping the utensil.
"Leo," Owen said, "listen to Teddy."
"I'll feed him," Teddy said, "he's just playing with his food."
Owen watched Teddy feeding Leo with one hand and holding Allison on her lap with the other.
"This looks good on you Altman," Owen teased.
"Owen," Teddy laughed.
"Holding one baby and feeding the other," Owen said.
"I like it," Teddy smiled.
After breakfast they got organized for a day out coordinating diapers, clean clothes, sippy cups and lunch. They spent the rest of the morning on one of Teddy's favourite hikes teasing and joking with each other between pointing out the plants and animals to the two kids. Owen took a selfie of the small family with the two kids in carriers attached to their parents. He sent it to his mom and Megan. Evelyn replied immediately saying how cute the four of them looked. After their hike they stopped at the big grocery store and bickered like an old married couple over what they needed for the week, Teddy on autopilot grabbing her usual items and checking the list in her phone for what she was out of, Owen grabbing new things he wanted to try.
With the kids down for naps at Teddy's they sat on the window seat with tea. Owen grabbed the pink blanket and wrapped it around them. Teddy sighed and leaned into him.
"We got in just in time," Owen said pointing out the window.
"Snow," Teddy smiled, "this place is beautiful in the snow."
"You just like the snow," Owen said.
"I always love the snow," Teddy said, "Allison does two."
"She gets that from her mommy," Owen said, pulling Teddy close to him so her back rested against his chest.
"I like this," Teddy said, "cuddling to watch the snowfall our kids napping."
"Teddy," Owen whispered.
"Yes," Teddy replied.
"Will you be my girlfriend," he asked.
"Yes," Teddy said, "does that mean your my boyfriend?"
"Of course," Owen said.
Teddy turned slightly in his arms to kiss him, he deepened the kiss winding his fingers through her thick blonde hair, she slid her hands around his neck and down his back. They made out for a while before curling back into eachother to watch the snowfall. His hands sliding under her shirt and across her stomach. She took his wrist and moved his hand back on top of her shirt.
"Do you not want me to do that," Owen asked.
"I do," Teddy said, "but the last time we sat like this we created her."
"I know," Owen said, "Teddy your hiding something from me."
"Its stupid," Teddy said shaking her head, "because your here and your you and it's our baby."
"Teddy what is it," Owen asked.
"I'm still not in the same shape I was before her," Teddy said, "my hips and stomach have changed. I feel it, my clothes fit differently."
"Teddy you are gorgeous," Owen said, "it's you. We're us. We can have this life. I know your not ready to sleep together now. I respect that. I don't want you to hide from me."
"I'm nervous," Teddy said.
"We wont do anything you don't want to," Owen promised, "you tell me."
"Then you have to tell me what you need," Teddy said.
"Right now I just want to hold you while our kids nap," Owen said.
"I'd like that," Teddy smiled, giving him a gentle kiss.
They sat in the window seat until the kids woke up from their naps, bundling everyone back up again they decided to all go for a walk in the snow towards Teddy's favourite cafe for cocoa and pastries.
