They enjoyed a nice dinner, which neither Elliot or Olivia mentioned used to be 'their' spot. The spot they went to if they weren't getting takeout. They were both rather thankful that it was a lot of new waitstaff so no one recognized them. From the outside, they just looked like a loving family. They were now heading towards Emily's house so she could gather her necessary things. The excitement and happiness that Emily had throughout the dinner was slowly fading; turning into fear and anxiety. She started to pick at the hair tie on her wrist, snapping it nonchalantly. After a few minutes of Emily being silent, Olivia turned to glance back and saw what she was doing. Red flags raised in her head but she didn't want to assume anything other than it being a nervous tick.
"Hey, we will be in and out. I promise." Olivia spoke causing Emily to look away from the window. "Believe me, I know what you're feeling."
"You do?" Emily looked up at Olivia and then down at her hands, now picking at the skin around her fingernails.
"My old apartment is where I was first tortured, it's where a lot of those scars came from. I thought I would be fine to go back to be able to start packing up my things so I could move in with my boyfriend at the time." Elliot listened intently. She had a boyfriend when she was kidnapped? Was it someone I knew? Olivia knew in the back of her mind that Elliot was taking this all in to ask her about later. "But it was a lot harder than I imagined. I didn't expect the flashbacks to come back so quickly. So if you are triggered in any way, you tell us and we will take you back to the car right away, no questions asked."
"I think as long as I can get into my room, I'll be ok." Emily admitted as Elliot pulled up to the house, unknowingly parking in the same place Jim always did. The adults got out of the car first and Emily slowly joined them.
An officer was already there waiting to unlock the house for them. Elliot thanked him and allowed Olivia and Emily to walk in first. Emily stopped in the entryway. Stuff was everywhere. She hadn't told anyone that she had been tied up having to watch Jim being murdered trying to protect Kara. Having to watch Kara be raped by Ricky. The images came back as quickly as Olivia said they would.
Kara's screams sounded so real and echoed off the walls. It hurt Emily's ears. She could feel the glass showering over her from the vase Jim threw at Ricky that shattered above her head when he missed. She could see the blood pooling underneath Jim after Ricky took a piece of the vase and stabbed him and slit his throat. She smelled the alcohol in the air and on Ricky's breath the first time he started to kiss her. Soon, she started to feel his hands on her and then one of his friends and his other friend.
All of this sensation happened within a minute but it felt like eternity to Emily. Olivia moved in front of Emily. She saw her eyes open wide, lost in the flashback. They needed to bring her back without scaring her further.
"Hey, Emily. Are you with us?" Elliot asked, after seeing the look on Olivia's face.
"Follow my voice honey, come back to me. It's not happening anymore." Olivia soothed.
Emily blinked, her eyes turning red from staying open for too long.
But she was now back in the shed. She saw Olivia tied up. Ricky had her shirt cut open and was starting to undo her pants. But where is the crowbar? She was still tied up. The knife was poking out of his back pocket. Oh god, no. He pulled her pants down just enough. Emily watched as he took himself out of his own pants.
"DON'T TOUCH HER!" Emily screamed at the top of her lungs and collapsed to the floor. "LEAVE MY MOM ALONE! I'M THE ONE YOU WANT! DON'T RAPE HER PLEASE!"
"Emily!" Olivia immediately sunk to the ground with Emily and Elliot wasn't far behind. Olivia just grabbed her and held her tight. Emily was fighting hard.
"NO, LET ME GO! DON'T TOUCH ME! PLEASE!"
"Emily, it's Mom. You're in my arms. It's me, you're safe honey. You're safe Emmy." Olivia whispered into Emily's ear. Slowly Emily's body relaxed and her eyes focused. Elliot had his arms around both of them.
"I'm sorry, I didn't save you. I'm so sorry!" Emily was back to reality but was completely hysterical.
"Honey, we are safe. You don't need to save me from anything." Olivia comforted her daughter.
"It was just all so real. It was like it was happening all over again." Emily nuzzled into Olivia's arms.
"It's alright, you don't have to apologize. We have your back no matter what." Olivia rested her cheek on top of Emily's head. "Take as much time as you need. Get your feet back on the ground."
"I just want to grab my stuff and get out of here." Emily got up out of their arms and ran upstairs with her eyes closed.
"You ok?" Elliot checked in with Olivia.
"I'm alright El, I'll be back down with her in a few minutes." Olivia brushed off and rushed upstairs to find her daughter. She found Emily tearing around under her bed looking for something. "Honey?"
"I'm just trying to get my suitcase." Emily emerged, tugging out the suitcase.
"Take it easy, I don't want you to make any of your injuries worse." Olivia cautioned. Emily just kept going, flipping the top open and going into her dresser. She pulled out some outfits, a few pairs of shoes and walked past Olivia to the bathroom and grabbed her razor, toothbrush and hair straightener. She turned to grab her laptop off of her desk and stopped.
"Where's my laptop? Where's my backpack? It would be…" Emily realized what happened. She was grabbed on her way home from school. Her bag must have been left in the van. "Shit, all my stuff for school is gone. They probably tossed my bag into the Hudson or something."
"Hey, we can replace that stuff. Don't stress over it." Olivia tried to put a hand on Emily's shoulder but she walked away before she could. She started to zip up her suitcase.
"Alright I'm ready." She pulled the suitcase off of the bed and was about to head to the door when she stopped again. "Wait…"
"What?" Olivia took hold of the suitcase handle. Emily turned back and opened the drawer of her nightstand. She pulled out a well loved teddy bear. It had her name sewn into the paw. EMILY SERENA. Olivia's eyes grew wide. "You got to keep that?"
"Yeah, my mo- Kara told me that her mother had given it to me at first but then when Jim drunkenly told me I was adopted when I was 4, she told me that my mother had left it with me when she gave me up. I had to hide it after a while because they didn't want me to dwell on ever meeting my real parents." Emily hugged the bear. "I sleep with him every night. That's why when you said you were my mom, I believed you had cared about me. You wouldn't have left a personalized toy with me if you didn't."
"That's exactly what I hoped it would do for you." Olivia smiled, holding back tears again. "You have been and always will be my little Emmy Bear."
"I love you."
"I love you too baby. Let's go home." They started to head to the stairs, Elliot ran up to take the suitcase from Olivia.
"Let's head home ladies." Elliot led them out the door.
"Hey Mom, where did you get the idea for my name?" Emily asked as they got back into the car and Elliot was putting the suitcase in the trunk.
"Well I kind of fell in love with the nickname Emmy but I didn't want to go too simple with Emma. I found that Emily stood for rival or to strive and I felt that was a strong name meaning for you. And it flowed with Serena really well. I knew as soon as I was having a girl that her middle name would be Serena, after my mother." Olivia answered.
"So I'm named after my grandmother? What was she like?"
"Well, um…" Olivia was hesitant to answer. Elliot took her hand to assure her. "Well I guess the best way to put her was similar to Jim. She was an alcoholic but she was very smart. She taught English at Hudson. She wasn't exactly the most supportive person but I wouldn't be who I am, doing what I'm doing with my life."
"She inspired you to work in SVU?"
"Yeah, so I was the product of my mother's rape. Her case had gone cold and I wanted to be someone to help with putting away rapists and abusers so no one had to go through what she did."
"Is the job hard to do after you've been assaulted?"
"It can be. But as long as you know you have family and friends to support you, you can make it through. And also making sure to mentally and emotionally check in with yourself."
"I want to be a detective." Emily stated. That statement did not catch Olivia or Elliot by surprise. Deep down, they knew that if they had ever had a child, they were going to follow in their footsteps.
"You can be whatever you want to be. Your mother and I will support you." Elliot responded. He pulled into the parking lot of Olivia's apartment building. The family got out and headed to the lobby and elevator to Olivia's floor. Olivia opened the door as Emily practically busted through it.
"I like it. It's very simple and cozy." Emily looked around and plopped herself on the couch.
"Well thanks." Olivia chuckled. "There is a spare bedroom but I have basically been using it as storage so tomorrow we can go out and pick out some furniture and anything else you'd like."
"You don't have to do all that. I mean I'm okay with taking the furniture from my old room if that's easier. I don't want to make you guys spend all that money on me."
"Em, we're your parents. It's what we should be doing. Liv, do you want me to drop her suitcase in your room?" Elliot asked.
"Yeah that's fine. Em, do you mind having to share my room with me for tonight?" Olivia questioned.
"I thought I'd sleep on the couch and you two would share the bedroom." Emily innocently replied. She figured that her dad would probably be the one on the couch but she had to keep her plan in motion.
"No, honey. You two have concussions, the last thing you need to be sleeping on is the couch. Don't worry about it, I've slept on couches more than a bed anyways." Elliot headed down the hallway to put the suitcase in Olivia's room. While he was gone, Olivia gave Emily a look only a mother would give a daughter.
"What?" Emily asked, smiling.
"I know what you're doing."
"I'm not doing anything. I don't know what you're talking about." Emily laughed. Olivia just shook her head while rolling her eyes as Elliot came back into the kitchen area.
"You already made her roll her eyes? You must be my kid." Elliot pointed towards Liv as he continued to walk and sit next to Emily on the couch.
"I swear to God if you two now think that you can team up against me." Instantly Emily and Elliot gave the same 'who me?' face to her. "How? You've known each other for not even 24 hours yet and you give me the same face."
"Like father, like daughter?" Emily shrugged. "Do you have any cards or like board games? I want to do something and it's not like we are allowed to look at a tv to watch a movie."
"Yeah, I have some cards somewhere. Let me see if I can find them." Olivia disappeared into her storage room, leaving Elliot and Emily alone.
"You love her, don't you?" Elliot was not expecting that right away.
"Uh, well, yes. I do. Your mother is probably the most important person in my life." Elliot admitted.
"I'm pretty sure she loves you too."
"Pretty sure?"
"Well she didn't exactly say she does but I mean, the way she looks at you. It's a no brainer."
"I doubt that." Elliot scoffed. Olivia came back into the living room.
"Found an old box of Uno cards if you want to play that."
"Yes please!" Emily took the box out of Olivia's hands and started to shuffle the deck. Olivia sat on Emily's other side and looked towards Elliot. He looked up at her and smiled. Emily could see them out of the corner of her eye. Her plan was definitely going to work.
