A/N- I in good conscience couldn't let a good outfit go to waste. LOL.
Rory, Kevin, and Brian entered the bar, they were at every Friday Night. The bar was a mix between modern and funky. There were photos decorated in rows on the ceiling, which gave a very edgy vibe to the bar.
"Rory? I wasn't expecting you to come here today." Tara asked Rory as soon as she saw Rory enter.
"Yes, Brian here convinced me otherwise," Rory pointed at Brian.
"And me," Kevin looked at Rory.
"So you guys want to get drunk or are you going to argue now about who convinced Rory to come here," Brian made his way to their booth.
One of the waitresses came to their table to take the order.
"So, Kevin what can I get for you?" Lily said looking at Kevin only, biting her lips, and smiling.
"I'll have a steamroller and a burger," Kevin said looking at his menu.
"Sure, you want anything else?" Lily asked Kevin clearly flirting with him.
"No thanks." Kevin said giving her the menu and turning to look at the TV that was playing a soccer game.
Lily's smile fell.
"Lily, I'll have a martini and a cheeseburger with extra fries," Rory said feeling bad for Lily.
"I'll have the same but with onion rings," Tara added.
"Beer and a burger. Thanks." Brian added smiling politely.
"Uhum." Lily took their menus and went away.
The group spent some time talking about office stuff. Tara and Brian bickered about anything and everything. Rory had fun laughing with all four of them, Kevin included. He could be funny and a genuine friend when he wanted to be. After a while and many drinks later, Tara and Brian got up to dance.
Rory and Kevin were having fun, looking at their friends making a fool out of themselves drunk.
"So you want to hit the dance floor?" Kevin asked Rory gulping his 4th streamroller down.
"After looking at Brian and Tara dance like that. No way." Rory laughed.
"Who cares? They are drunk, they won't remember it in the morning. None of us will." Kevin said.
"Trust me, I will. I am not letting Tara or Brian forget this ever." Rory said taking out her phone and taking a picture of her friends having fun and dancing.
"Are you still pissed at me for talking about that douche bag or are you over yourself?" Kevin said his jaw set.
Wow, Tara was right he is always acting like an asshole.
Not wanting to get into a fight. Rory forced a smile and said, "It's fine Kevin. Everyone is entitled to their opinion."
Rory looked at her watch and realized it was already past 12. She wanted to get out of the bar especially away from the question that she knew Kevin would ask in the next 5 minutes. She knew Kevin was going to ask to take her home with him If she wasn't out of there.
"Oh, well look at the time. I should get out of here." Rory said trying to get up. Her foot caught in the chair and she stumbled. Kevin steadied her.
"What's the rush Ror? Let's have another drink." Kevin said grinning at Rory
"Sorry Kevin, next time. I have some things planned for tomorrow and I need to be home early to actually see them through in the morning." Rory said paying for her drinks and closing her wallet.
"Well then don't let me keep you away," Kevin said looking away and trying to reel his anger in.
Kevin wondered what Rory had planned that she needed to go early on a Friday night. Their Friday night. Was she seeing someone else? Kevin tried to think if Rory spent an unusual amount of time with anyone at the office lately. He couldn't think of anyone. She couldn't have met anyone outside, with the hours she worked she had no time. Kevin ordered another drink and got up to sit with some of his other friends from the office.
Rory walked about 50 meters towards her office in search of a cab. She was a little tipsy and found her step faltering more than once. She was by the office garage and took out her phone when she heard honking and jumped.
"Logan! You scared me." Rory said holding her hand to her chest.
"I scared you? You do realize you are standing in the mean streets of New York at midnight." Logan said pointing to his watch.
Logan sized Rory up. Rory's blouse was not as neatly tucked in as he knew she would have it in the morning. Her top few buttons were open and he could see a little bit for her cleavage. Logan gulped. Her hair was left open and her eyes were glassy. Oh God! what was she thinking walking here alone?
Logan tried to focus and said. "And from what I can observe, you are two drinks away from finding yourself inside an open pothole."
Rory chuckled at that and said, "Well wouldn't you know something about getting drunk and tripping over things." Rory said and squinted her eyes at her phone to pull up the number of the cab.
"I would," Logan smirked.
He could see Rory was really drunk if she was so casually bringing up instances from their past. And he didn't want to leave Rory here in this condition.
"Well, get in. I'll drop you home." Logan said smiling at Rory.
Rory looked up from her phone. She smiled at Logan and tilted her head. "This isn't pretty woman." Rory said shaking her head.
It was Logan's turn to chuckle now. "I know."
"Good, cause if my grandma were to know. She would probably call a priest to perform an exorcism this time." Rory said.
"Get in Rory. Let me drive you home." Logan said trying to bring the conversation back to getting her off the street and to her home.
"It's okay Logan. I am going to call the cab, it will probably be here in no time." Rory said holding her phone to her eye level and squinting again to find the number.
"It won't be here in no time. It will probably take it 10-15 minutes." And I don't like the idea of you standing here alone for 15 minutes. Logan said trying to convince Rory to get in. "Come on Rory. I am here. I can drop you. What's the problem?" Logan said.
Rory thought about it. It would take a cab sometime to reach here and she couldn't wait to get out of these heels and in her bed.
"Okay." Rory said making her way to the passenger seat of Logan's Porsche and getting in. "515 West 38th Street. What were you doing in the office so late? It's past midnight."
"I had some important things to close up. " Logan shrugged.
"Do you regularly stay here so late?" Rory asked looking at Logan.
"Usually."
Logan put the car in drive and wondered what Rory was doing there alone in the first place. Where were her friends and why wasn't she taking a cab with one of them, instead of just standing there waiting for a cab alone.
"So, this happens often?" Logan asked Rory trying to find out more about the situation.
"Me waiting for a cab? Yes, I don't have a car in the city. The traffic, the parking not to mention the costs associated with keeping a car in the city." Rory said looking outside her window.
"Not what I meant to ask, but okayy." Logan said smiling genuinely at Rory's reply. "I meant to ask, do you get drunk like this pretty often? I mean I all up for people letting loose every once in a while." Logan said glancing at Rory and then focusing his attention back on the road.
"Umm, just Friday nights. A group of us from the office go to this bar down the street." Rory said looking at Logan.
"Okay. So can I ask, why none of those friends were with you?" Logan asked.
"Oh, because I had to leave urgently," Rory said picking her nails nervously.
Logan looked at Rory momentarily to judge if she was nervous. She was. "Why?"
Rory's head snapped up and she looked at Logan. "Well aren't we in an inquisitive mood today." Rory smiled at Logan.
Logan tried to play it off cool and said shrugging his shoulders, "Just checking."
Rory could read him like an open book right now. Maybe it was the alcohol, maybe it was their history, or maybe because at that moment, the distance between them was so less that she could practically see every reaction and emotion on his face. He was concerned about her. That made her feel warm and fuzzy inside. Or was it the alcohol making her feel like that?
Rory remembered that Logan just asked her a question and said. "There was a situation that I didn't want to be involved in. So I had to get out early and couldn't tell some of my friends that I was leaving."
Logan gripped the steering wheel so tight his knuckles turned white. He knew what kind of situation Rory was talking about. He wasn't born yesterday. He tried to remind himself that he couldn't get jealous over this. He tried to think what he should say next.
Rory looked at Logan closely and could clearly see him trying to hide his jealously.
Rory's phone rang and she picked it up to see Tara calling. She accepted the call and at that moment Logan took a sharp left and Rory's phone slipped from her hands and fell between Logan's legs.
"Logan!" Rory whined.
Clearly very inebriated she bent down to find it. Logan had a really good view down her top because of how some of her blouse buttons were open. Her boobs were pressing on his leg. Her hair was tickling his arm. He tried to shake his head clear of the thoughts he was having. Logan touched Rory's arm to tell her to sit back on her side. He couldn't focus on driving with her in that position.
"Rory, we can find it later." Logan said his face flushed.
Rory suddenly realized what she was doing. She sat up straight and her face reddened. "Oh sorry. I didn't realize, Tara called and I..."
Logan stopped her in between. "It's okay Rory."
"You should come?" Rory said suddenly trying to change the topic.
Logan looked at Rory wide-eyed.
"To the Friday night drinks. It will be fun. You'll like it." Rory said her eyes beamed at her suggestion.
"Rory, I hate to break it to you but I don't think people would want to spend Friday night drinks with their boss." Logan said with a light laugh. Friendliness back in their conversation.
"Why not? You are in the same age group as everyone else. And besides, I think it will be good for employee morale to see their boss in a more informal environment."
"Oh really?" Logan asked raising his eyebrows and smiling at her suggestion.
"Yes absolutely. Building relationships and whatnot." Rory said nodding her head.
Logan pulled up outside Rory's apartment building.
"Well in that case, maybe I will." Logan said turning to face Rory, smirking at her. And in return getting to meet the guy you were trying to get away from today? Wouldn't miss it for the world.
"Good." Rory said happily that Logan seemed to like her idea.
"So, thank you." Rory said awkwardly and opening the door for getting out.
"Wait." Logan said, "Here". Logan gave Rory her phone.
Rory blushed again at the thought of how she reacted to get the phone. "Thank you and thank you for the ride today." Rory said and got out of the car.
Logan checked her apartment building from outside. It was decent. He could see there was no doorman but it was better than the shit hole she chose to live in with Paris. Looked much safer too. He couldn't stop himself from getting out of the car and checking the building a little bit more closely.
"Maybe I should drop you at your door. Wouldn't want the wrath of Emily Gilmore on me if she were to know, I didn't see her only granddaughter get inside her apartment safely at this hour." Logan said rubbing his hands.
Rory looked at him for a second to read his intentions and then said, "Sure."
Rory and Logan walked inside and waited for the elevator. Rory looked at Logan and she really wanted to talk to him. Like really talk to him, without having to walk around the eggshells. She looked at Logan and she wanted to lean on his arm to keep the weight off her feet. But she quickly realized that might be inappropriate at the moment. She took a deep breath and said.
"So are we never going to talk about it?" Rory turned to face Logan.
Logan looked at her for a while, and then said, "Do you really want to talk about it here?" He said gesturing the area.
"When else would we talk about it? Now seems like a good time." Rory said biting the inside of her cheeks.
A takeout delivery guy came to stand next to them to wait for the elevator. Logan didn't want to have this conversation in an elevator and that too with other people around to eavesdrop. He didn't want to have this conversation with Rory drunk.
"How about we get lunch on Sunday and we can talk about it then?"
"Okay." Rory thought that was better than no talking at all.
"Let me get your number and I'll text you the details?" Logan asked Rory.
"Yes sure. I'll just put it in for you?" Rory said taking Logan's phone from him.
They got in the elevator and stood there awkwardly. The air seemed so thick suddenly.
They got out and Rory turned to say.
"You know you can leave now. I can get in on my own."
"I am here, let me see you go in." Logan insisted.
Rory knew she wasn't going to win this so started looking for her keys. She took them out and was trying to put them in the lock when she got a little misbalanced.
Logan put a hand around her waist to steady her.
"Give to me, I'll open it" Logan took the keys and opened the door for her.
Rory looked up at Logan. She could feel Logan's arm on her waist. She could feel his chest muscles against the shoulder. She could even smell his Cologne.
Logan looked down at her and suddenly realized how close they were standing. He removed his arm and cleared his throat and said "So..I'll see you on Sunday?
"You can come in." Rory blurted out.
"What?" Logan asked.
"For coffee?" Rory said fidgeting with her keys.
"I am not sure that's such a good idea. I should get home." Logan said.
"Oh okay goodnight," Rory said.
"Good night." Logan said and turned around to leave.
Rory suddenly realized what she forgot the whole night. He has someone else in his life. She closed the door. She wrapped her arms around herself and tried to steady her body and her thoughts. She felt the room spinning, partially due to alcohol and partially due to Logan's presence so close to her yet so far away.
