Taking Out the Trash

Life continued after that breakfast date. They saw each other often, always at Lily's place, and usually went out to common places, like the mall or the library. People started interrupting them at first, looking for gossip, but they soon learned that the girl wasn't having it. On evenings where the nurse worked that week, he'd stop by the hospital briefly to tell her that he loved her. She invited him to one of their after-work burger runs on Friday night, which basically turned into a late-night interrogation.

"What are your intentions for our little Lily?" Kathy said, leading the charge.

"Kathy!" the girl in question gasped, her mouth full of burger. She covered her mouth and swallowed so that she could berate the veteran nurse. Nick placed a stilling hand on her shoulder and pulled out his pad.

I think that's the question on everyone's minds lately. Lillith is such an innocent. I'm not an innocent, but I can act like one for her sake. I intend to marry this amazing woman, Kathy. I wouldn't have bothered to seek her out after my hospitalization if I could truly live without her.

"No plans to lead her on?" Danielle jumped in after reading the note Kathy passed around. "Lillith is a powerful black woman. She's a symbol of good and justice in this city. There are those who would love to see her broken and humbled."

I'm not sure what you people think I am, but I'm a simple country boy. Lily has more experience with spotting games than I do. As for being some kind of player, I'm a freaking deafmute! What would be my chances of running a game on her? I'm not here to break her heart or spirit. I want forever. And I want it with her

"That's so romantic," Carrie gushed at the last part of the note. "You two are gonna be so happy together." Lily started singing out of the blue.

Imagine me and you, I do

I think about you day and night, it's only right

To think about the girl you love, and hold her tight

So happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime

And you say you belong to me, and ease my mind

Imagine how the world could be, so very fine

So happy together

Everyone laughingly joined in the chorus.

I can't see me lovin nobody but you

For all my life

When you're with me, baby, the skies'll be blue

For all my life

Me and you and you and me

No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be

The only one for me is you, and you for me

So happy together!

The group broke into raucous laughter, then cheered when Nick claimed her lips in a tender kiss.

"Well, this is all rather cozy, isn't it?"

The group turned to see Lestat LaGragne stalking into their diner, with his ever-present group of yes men and women.

"Go away, Mr-"

"His name is 'Lestat', bitch," one of his more devoted followers spoke up angrily. "Maybe if you addressed him correctly, he would listen to you."

"I know exactly who he is, sycophant number 5, thank you," Lily said. "I still want him gone from this place."

"It's a public place, Lily. I'm just thinking that your group could interact with mine."

"We just got off work after a hard shift. What could we possibly have to talk about with you?"

"Anything you desire, dear lady," he said smoothly, coming closer. He sat on the booth behind hers and tried to run his hands over the back of her neck. Nick blocked him by drawing her close to him. She smiled up at him and he caressed her cheek

"And isn't this sweet, your little deafmute," he said, obviously not remembering the man from the hospital. "How are things in the land of the deaf and dumb?"

"Peachy," she rolled her eyes. Suddenly she smiled at him and leaned in towards him. "This is for you," she said sexily. He accepted the papers from her, lost in her eyes, and hissed when he read them.

"You bitch!"

"That's right, you just got served," Lily told him in triumph, leaning back against her man. "Fifty feet or less and you go to jail. So, are you going to leave, or is my buddy Rob in the back going to call the police?"

"You can't do this to me! No woman has ever-"

"Then it pleases me to be the first," she said. "Buh bye." The man got up, his usually sinuous movements jerky, and retreated. Halfway to the door, he turned to deliver his big parting shot.

"You'll never do better than I could have given you, Lillith. That faggot mutie won't be able to satisfy you."

"My heart is breaking," she deadpanned. "Have a nice life," she said with a dismissive wave. The group with him was all but hissing at the girl and her fellow nurses.

"Listen, Lillith-"

"Ms. Winthrop will do," Lily told him. "Soon to be Mrs. Andros. And that's the closest to my wedding that you'll ever get. Goodbye, Mr. LeGragne." He looked deep into her eyes and saw that she was dead serious about this restraining order. He couldn't believe it; no woman had ever rejected him like this before. Hell, he'd never struck out before at all. He was rich and he was handsome. It had always been just a matter of time before he added her to his list of conquests. But a restraining order? Really? Had he really come on that strongly? Shaking his head in disbelief, he left the little diner, his entourage trailing behind him.

And that's a wrap on Lestat! It's also nice the hear the deafmute's perspective on this whole thing. A short chapter, but I think it works. Join me next chapter for more on the courtship of Nick and Lily! Reviews are loved ^_^
