...
Don't count your chickens before they hatch, an idiom meaning that you shouldn't depend on something hopeful to happen until it has already happened. Unfortunately Charlie, Ron or Harry haven't heard or listened to this saying as they make their way to Hogwarts.
Harry finds himself staring out of the side window from the backseat of Arthur's Ford Angelia. As they left the hospital passing Ron's parents, Arthur had thrown his keys to his second oldest son, after a quick explanation. Both promising Ron that they would stay with Hermione and Mrs. Granger. Harry scowled up at the stars as they seemed to blink into existence as they left foggy london city behind, Charlie drove in silence, giving up on trying to start a conversation at the beginning of their journey. But Ron remained silent, jaw clenched, eyes blank, if it wasn't for his deep breathing, the other two would have thought he was dead. Neither Charlie or Harry could blame the other man, they couldn't imagine how it felt to have their partner attacked.
During this eerily quiet drive Harry had the time to not only worry about his best friend but also think about his decision on why Hagrid?
Hagrid is what you would call like the Roald Dahl character the BFG, The Big Friendly Giant. Standing tall at seven foot six inches and around three times as wide with his long black mane of shagging hair and beard which covers the majority of said man's face. First time nineteen year old Harry met the grounds keeper of keys and grounds of Hogwarts university, he nearly shat himself.
But like the BFG this giant man who towers over everyone in sight he is the least threatening of people with a heart that surprisingly surpasses his height, Harry found this out after five minutes of talking to Hagrid. Alas with his massive heart Hagrid is the biggest sucker known to man when it comes to animals, deadly or not, Hagrid would hug this possibly harmful creature and try convincing you with his black eyes wide and innocent like, that this animal would not harm you.
Harry remembers four years ago while he visited Hargid for some tea during one of his breaks during classes, the large man tells him happily that a few nights ago he won this egg in a game of cards and that Harry should invite Hermione and Ron along to 'watch this magnificent animal be brought into this world tonight.' Harry, not thinking much of it, told his two best friends and the three of them visited Hagrid in his tiny hut. Much to the surprise of the three youngsters Hagrid somehow managed to win an egg of a Komodo Dragon.
Hermione after the impact of what she was seeing had sunk in, then began to convince a delighted Hagrid the dangerous ramifications that not only was it illegal, morally it was wrong but he also was unable to care for it. This conversation felt like it went on for hours with Hermione spouting facts and Hagrid trying to convince her he could care for the now named Norbert but would be a better mother figure for his new animal then to the people who would take him. While Hermione went into what the boys called full lecture mode, the two boys decided to go outside and call the one person who they knew would come and collect the newly hatched Komodo Dragon discreetly, one Charlie Weasley.
Hours later when Charlie arrives with three of his coworkers in a discrete white van pulled into the carpark of Hogwarts. Ron and Harry walk the four people down to the hut and they all stop mid step hearing Hermione and Hagrid still arguing. After finally reassuring Hagrid that he can visit Norbert whenever he was able to, Charlie and his coworkers were able to detach the Dragon from a sobbing Hagrid.
You would think Hagrid learnt his lesson after this, you are surely mistaken as this big man also managed to collect an unusually big sized female and male wolf spider which he named the male Aragog after an old school friend and the female called Mosag. A staffordshire bull terrier that seemed to hate everyone but Hagrid, that would only fall asleep when music was played that he had named Fluffy, to this day Harry is still confused on why he would name that vicious beast Fluffy. A rare large, dull grey and white frame overo colouration of a gene mutation, sorara horse which Hagrid named Buckbeak. All these animals were taken off Hagrid pretty quickly because of his home being way too small so the headmistress Minerva Mcgonagall found each of his animals new homes all but the old cowardly greyhound that is named Fang, once again confusing Harry on Hagrid's name choices.
Pulling into the gravel parking lot brought Harry back to reality seeing the massive brick castle called Hogwarts, fresh air fills Harry's lungs immediately after getting out the blue car, making him close his eyes, taking big breaths. The three of them silently start walking towards the right side of the university, the cold breeze rustling nearby tree's.
"Do you think Hagrid would mind having visitors this late at night?" Charlie wonders looking down at his watch seeing it is eleven twenty five pm.
"He lov..."
Ron stops mid-sentence at the top of a large field, next to the back of the university, noticing the three shadowy figures walking across the field in the direction towards Hargrid's home. Deliberately keeping a causal pace in the shadow of the castle trying to get close enough to the mysterious figures without being caught to identify them. A yellow light comes from the windows around the small wooden cabin making the three mysterious shadows barely visible in the night as they approach the wooden door.
"Family?" Ron whispers looking at Charlie and Harry.
"He doesn't have any that I know off" Harry quietly replies as the men knock on the door.
"QUIET FANG" Hagrid bellows, throwing his front door wide open.
The three stop dead in their tracks as they notice one of the men is none other than Captain Dumbledore standing there in his blue police uniform in front lowing his hand from knocking on the door.
"Good evening Hagrid," Dumbledore states, looking deadly serious.
So much unlike his normal cheerful self. Charlie, Harry and Ron exchange confused looks at what the hell was going on as the three others walk instead and they walk around to one of the windows.
"That's Cornelius Fudge, the Minister" Ron breathed pointing to a portly little man who had rumpled grey hair with an anxious expression. Wearing a strange mixture of clothes; a pinstripe suit, a scarlet tie, pointed purple boots and a line green bowler hat.
"Bad business, Hagrid '' Fudge explained watching as Hagrid dropped into one of his old worn chairs "very bad business, had to come, five attacks and one death. Things have gone far enough, ministry's got to act"
"I haven't" Hagrid said looking up at Dumbledore "You know I never, Captain Dumblore, sir..."
"I want to make it understood, Cornelius, that Hagrid has my full confidence," Dumbledore states, frowning at the minster.
"Look Albus, with Hagrid's record against" Fudge paused uncomfortable "look at it from my point of view, I'm under a lot of pressure, got to be seen doing something and if it turns out it wasn't Hagrid, he'll be back and no more said but I've got to take him"
"Take me? Take me where?" Asked Hagrid who was trembling dreading the answer.
"More of a precaution than anything" Fudged muttered, not meeting Hagrid's eyes.
"Azkaban" the last man stated in a bored tone with his back practically turned to the group hiding.
He looked strangely familiar to Harry but for the life of him he couldn't figure out where with his pale blonde hair and sharp features, wearing a long black travelling cloak just leaning on his wooden walking stick with a unique silver snake head.
"And what exactly are you doing here anyway, Lucius?" Dumbledore asked politely even though there was a fire burning in his blue eyes.
"Dreadful thing, Dumbledore" Lucius drawled "But believe it or not a lawyer was needed to be present while in this... home"
Hagrid blushes bright red ready to counter-attack Lucius' comment about his home when his eyes caught sight of two red-haired and a black haired man, freezing then quickly as they can duck under the window ledge.
"All right, I'll come" Hagrid nearly shouted, making the three heads abruptly stop mid-turn, wondering on what or who grabbed the man's attention outside the window, only Dumbledore seemed to continue the turn towards the window with a grin and a sparkle in his blue eyes.
Charlie, Ron and Harry breathed heavily while hoping that none of the other men spotted them after Hagrid had, all they can hear now is stuff being moved round then the front door knocking against the side. Hagrid strode out the cabin door and holding the door to let Dumbledore, Fudge and Lucius out, suddenly Hagrid stands his ground making his all ready hulking frame bigger over the smaller men, taking a deep breath he looks ahead and steadily said "If anyone wanted ter find out some stuff, all they'd have ter do, would be ter follow the spiders, that'd should lead 'em right"
As abruptly as Hagrid started talking he then started walking towards the university as Fudge stared after him in amazement for a split second then proceeded to follow the tall man. Slowly followed by the two other men who refused to even acknowledge one another, both looking in opposite directions the clear dislike obvious in how they walked and the distance between both.
"Follow the spiders? Has Hagrid finally lost it?" Ron whispered as the shadowed figures finally retreated into the university.
"Ron" Harry narrowed his eyes at his best friend in warning "let's go inside and see if we can find any clues"
Harry ignores Ron spluttering behind him with his blue eyes wide, chuckling Charlie shakes his redhead at his little brother following the other man that has already started on his mission.
…
"Mate, I don't think we are going to find anything here" Ron complains sitting on the old worn out sofa petting the old drooling bloodhound, Fang.
"Ron, may have a point Harry," Charlie sighs, stretching his back next to the wooden table he had been searching for the past hour, finally ignoring all the paperwork that he was just bent over examining.
"There is has to be something here, FUCK" Harry kicks the red brick fireplace insteantly regretting it as he toes start to throb "he must know something that can help us"
Frustrated and now hurting Harry falls to the ground waiting for anything that can help him.
"Harry, breathe" Ron reassures his best friend "I have a feeling we aren't going to find a clue, let's go back home, get some rest so we can start bright and early to help Moine, as I can hear her now.."
"Telling us that running around till we burn out won't help?" Harry finishes as a small smile appears on his face.
"She is the smart one out of all three of you" Charlie jokes, making both boys laugh for the first time in hours as they leave the cabin.
…
"Follow the spiders"
That single sentence haunted Harry for weeks after Hagrid being arrested that faithfull night, even in his dreams people would stop mid-sentence saying that dreaded line then carry on like nothing had occurred. It was driving Harry insane as no matter what he does the darked haired man can not figure it out, could it be the ramblings of the drunk grounds-keeper like people tried to tell him? A crazy killer trying to confuse the young officers of his innocence? Could it? No Harry shakes his head it has to mean something, anything.
Rubbing the sleep forming in his eyes once again from staring at the harsh blue light of his computer screen late at night like he has done most nights, looking through the police data-base trying to find anything that can link to the 'spiders'. Not Surprisingly when he types in spider's it comes up with thousands of gang members with a tattoo of a spider on them, Harry finds himself always stopping on this one gang all with wolf spider tattoos on their necks calling themselves the Acromantulas.
BANG
Jumping up away from his screen looking up Harry comes face to face with a thin tall man with shallow skin, his shoulder length greasy black hair that doesn't look like it has been washed in months frames his face like curtains. He has a large hooked nose with dark penetrating eyes, Harry groans realising who is leaning over his desk with his palm flat which made the loud noise. Detective Snape was scowling down at the younger man with more hatred than normal in those beady black eyes, Harry rolling his eyes at the detective of the major crimes unit.
Severus Snape aka the dungeon bat as he is commonly known as, not just because he looks like like a bat with his pale sallow skin, his dark clothing and long trench coat no but he is known as that on the grounds that he swoops in at the last minute and steals a case like using echolocation as that man has great hearing.
He has been known to make a lot of the new detectives cry, Neville Longbottom is absolutely terrified of the man and has only met him a few times, saying even then that is too many times. His dislike towards Harry is well known through-out the precinct, not that he has ever tried to hide the fact of it, always making snide comments.
Even to the point of calling him a dunderhead just like his father; James Potter, who he hated more, Harry had no idea on why detective Snape hated him so much, only that he looked like James. He knew Snape and his mother; Lily Potter were best friends up to university but everytime he asked someone why Snape hated his dad they would only sing James' praises. The only man who didn't was now standing in front of him.
"Pray tell, Detective, why are you looking into a gang that you have no reason for even investigating?" He sneers.
On the screen is a picture of an older gentleman with white hair receding and a small handlebar moustache, aging lines around his eyes with a big black and grey Wolf spider tattoo on the left side of his neck. His name Julian Glover next to the photo along with other known names, associates, hang out spots and a rap sheet of known crimes commented.
"Don't know what you are talking about" Harry replies, turning around back towards his computer.
"It would be best, if you didn't stick your nose into things that it doesn't belong to Potter" Snapes sneer's his last name through yellow wonky teeth.
"Maybe you shouldn't shove your nose in things sir as then it wouldn't be so crooked" Harry snarks back turning off his computer and leaving a seething dungeon bat behind.
…
A few days later, as the sun is starting to descend in the sky, Harry and Ron find themselves walking through Dulwich park, the largest part of the Great North Wood in the London of Southwark. The two cops chat aimlessly, keeping at a leisurely pace and their eyes sharp, both dressed in plain weekend wear trying to avoid any unwanted attention. Finally, Ron pointed out the bridge that could be a possible entrance to the hideout they are looking for.
Harry had remembered late one night while tossing and turning in bed, thinking over once again Hagrid's message of 'follow the spiders,' suddenly it all clicked into place. Spiders. Hagrid owned a wolf-spider that he had affectionately mentioned that he named after Aragog, an old friend. Eyes closed still in bed, the rap sheet he had been looking through before Detective Snape had interrupted, appeared clearly in his mind. Leaping up out of bed, Harry raced over to the precinct and printed off the rap sheet of Julian 'Aragog' Glover, Leader of the Arcromantula's, a gang of men with wolf-spider neck tattoos.
It was this lead that helped them find and locate all known locations of the Arcromantula's, much to Harry's displeasure many had been abandoned after too many police raids. Harry didn't want to let his hopes rise too high for the final place on the list especially after the disappointment that had followed them all day. But despite himself he could feel it bubbling against his wishes.
Eventually coming up to what looks like an old bricked bridge covered in vines and surrounded by trees, starts to look promising as they notice the blocked off metal fence nearly reaching the top of the arch way that looks like it was painted with trees then graffiti over the top. Knocking on the makeshift door with no response Harry and Ron decided to try and open the door manually, with great effort and a lot of grunting from a bright red faced Ron they finally managed to open one side that emits from the old metal an ear-piercing creeks.
Harry paused at the entrance trying to see where they were going, but everything from the small area of light coming through the entrance way and the top of the gate was pitch black.
"What do you reckon?" Harry asks, turning towards Ron who is still on the other side of the door.
"We've come this far" Ron shrugs, stepping inside next to Harry.
They carried on through the dark tunnel using two flash lights as their only light source, they couldn't move very quickly now; there were too many dried up leaves, empty bottles/cans and rubbish scattered around the thin area. They continued walking for what seemed like half an hour after a while they noticed the ground seemed to be sloping downwards, confusing both men as they were only meant to be in a small tunnel. Both realised that this 'tunnel' wasn't as it seemed as they both concluded that they were both going fewer underground than any plans of the place originally showed. A loud noise echoing through-out the underground makes both Harry and Ron jump up in shock looking around for anything that could have made that noise.
"What?" Ron mutters, grabbing onto Harry's elbow a bit harder than he probably realised.
"There's something moving over there" Harry breathes heavily "Listen.. Sounds like something big.."
Listening carefully, feet glued to where they are, flash lights searching the immediate area, some distance ahead of them they heard the shuffling of feet rushing away from them.
"Oh no…" Ron says shaking his head "Oh no no no"
"Shut up" Frantically Harry covers his best friends mouth "They will hear us, we might be in the clear"
"Hear me!" Ron squeeks looking outraged and scared "they probably already have!"
The darkness seemed to spread around them quickly as they turned out their only light sauce, breathing frantically they stood terrified, waiting as the noise disappeared then silence.
"What do you think they are doing?" Harry wonders.
"Probably getting ready to pounce" Ron snaps with a tremor.
They wait in silence, shivering from the cold wind coming from everywhere, not daring to move.
"It was probably homeless people.. Do you think they are gone?" Harry whispers.
"Dunno.."
A bright blaze of light cuts Ron off, surrounding everything around them, so bright and sudden that both boys immediately fling their arms up to cover their eyes from the attack.
They didn't even have enough time to unblock their eyes or turn to see who turned on the lights when a loud clicking noise echoed through-out the area making both Harry and Ron freeze. Finally both of them lower their arms slowly to see themselves surrounded by twenty different sized, height and ethnic men holding guns pointing straight at them.
"What is it?" A voice says the clicking noise becomes louder.
"Men" One of the guys behind replies.
"Is it Hagrid?" The man asks, coming into view.
The man, Harry notices is Julian Glover aka Aragog walking towards them slowly but what surprises him is the almost completely milky white eyes staring back at him and the cane that is emitting the clicking noises that sounds eerily like pincers.
"Strangers" another man states.
"Kill them" Aragog mutters still clicking but turning away "I was sleeping…"
"WE ARE FRIENDS OF HAGRID!" Harry shouts, his heart pounding in his ears as the guns rise ready to shoot.
Aragog pauses "Hagrid has never sent anyone into our hallow before"
"Hagrid's in trouble" Harry's voice wavers "that's why we have come"
"In trouble" asks the aged man, Harry is sure he can hear concern in his voice "but why has he sent you?"
"They think.. That Hagrid has something to do with the posioning's that have been going on. They have taken him to Azkaban."
Aragog wacks his walking stick hard against the floor.
"But that was years ago" he says fretfully "years and years ago. I remember it quite well. That's why they made us leave school, they believed WE were the horror that dwelled. They had thought he had helped me."
Sorrow fills Aragog's features for a split second, that if they boys hadn't seen it they would have never believed it possible.
"So you both had nothing to do with what's happening?" Harry asks, feeling the cold sweat falling down his nape.
"WE" Aragog shouts "Never! We were raised together after my parents died, Hagrid was only a boy himself but he cared for me like a brother, he is my good friend and a good man. When I was blamed for the death of my fiancee, he protected me and they kicked us both out with no proof. Hagrid got his job as the groundskeeper and I have lived with my new family ever since but he visits me whenever he can, through the goodness of Hagrid I am not in jail for a death I didn't comment."
"What happened? Do you know who killed your fiancee? Who was she?" Harry spits out finding his courage at last.
"We were in our second year, when the posioning's started. A lot of students got attacked though-out the coming months" Aragog explains "They knew it was a student but with no proof they could only speculate. I was a chemist student and I started noticing things going missing at first vials then certain chemicals and it came to me one day that someone was trying to and succeeding in making a chemical poison."
The men around nod their head in appearcation at how smart their leader was even back when he was younger. Harry realised then that he would have to be careful on what he says from now until both Ron and himself are safely back in their flat to get out of this alive.
"I told my professor at the time that stuff was going missing but they shrugged it off as students like myself were using the labs during non-open hours. Then the university was threatening to be shut down when my beautiful, sweet fiancee Mosag an exchange student died" Aragog pauses to collect himself "Then the rumors started that it was me that was attacking students and killed her! Poor Hagrid tried telling anyone that would listen that I wouldn't but because of my shady background no one believed me and then started thinking that Hagrid and I were responsible. We got removed from school after a police enquiry found nothing that can connect us to any of it."
"Do you know who did it?" Harry enquiries, looking around trying to find an exit.
"I do not speak of that devil" Aragog explains with a smirk forming "I never even told Hagrid of my suspicions but we do not do any business with those who hide lower below than we do"
Harry and Ron did not want to push the subject anymore when they noticed the men closing on all sides, Aragog seemed bored of talking as he started turning back the way he came.
"We will just go then, thank you for your time" Harry calls to the retreating Aragog.
"Go?" Aragog wonders turning his head round "I don't think so.."
"But.. But.." Ron finally speaks after so long of silence.
"My family will not harm Hagrid on my command, but I can not deny them fresh meat, when it wanders so willingly into our midst. Goodbye, friends of Hagrid"
They spin around as the solid wall of men with guns surround them, the cackling laugh of Aragog bouncing off the walls as the others surrounding men, cock their guns smirking. They both reached for their guns hositured at their waist covered by the just bigger T-shirts, knowing it was going to do them no good. There were just too many of them for two people to go against and win but they have been up against worse than this before and won so both men stand ready to die fighting when a loud noise startles everyone.
"POLICE! WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED!"
The men look between each other then back towards where their leader had already retired, looking for some direction to either stand and fight or run to what Harry assumes to be a secret tunnel out. Using the distraction Harry and Ron do the only thing someone in their shoes would do, they ran past the shocked men towards the exit. Bullets start flying in every direction as they both run for their lives in the now lit tunnel as the shouts of the men can just be heard over the gunshots.
"What the.."
Ron doesn't finish his sentence as they exit the tunnel and see Charlie standing there white face in shock holding a cheap microphone obviously worried he just killed his brothers. Not attempting to talk the three men start running for their lives in the now dark park toward where Charlie had parked his dad's car. Jumping into the car, Charlie floors it onto the busy main street hoping to all above that they weren't followed or just put a death wish on them all for his stunt.
"How the bloody hell did you find us!" Ron yells putting his head into the front with a huge smile across his face excited that they just survived.
"I called and when no one picked up, I did the find my phone thing" Charlie explains "Thank god Hermione made you get the app on your phone Ronald as you keep losing your bloody phone all the time or you could have both died!"
Laughing, Harry settles into the passenger seat thanking Hermione for saving their asses.
...
After their escape from the Acromantula's den from their brief yet as Ron explains;
'Fucking terrifying exprince'
'Barely bloody escaping from that nearly blind bastard'
Harry is hopeful with the small tidbits of information they had received from Juilan Glover, alas the small bubble of hope was dashed away after coming up to the first month of finding nothing, nothing week after week that turns into months of painstaking slow research trying to find out what Aragog meant by his crypted message 'we do not do any business with those who hide lower below than we do.'
Charlie, Ron and Harry finally think they figure out that the group that they suspect to be the Death Eaters are doing their business in the underground of London. They end up spending most of their days off at the British Library located on Euston Road, in the back looking at dusty old and new maps, plans and views containing anything massive enough to hide the endangered enormous snake. Comparing many different papers to digital files to find any inconsistencies or something that would spark the 'detectives gut.'
Many hours spent listening to Ron either complaining of hunger as no food was allowed in the library or how wrong it felt doing all this research without the help of Hermione as 'Mione would be able to figure it out faster than us' the last one didn't get the usual snarky remarks or any, with the sullen look on his freckled face leaving the other two men agreeing and encouraging to keep looking.
Harry and Ron even spent their time going through the cold musty old file's room in the far back of the precinct during their lunch break, trying to find anything that connects any group but mainly the Death Eaters' old dens and places to the spots they found during their search at the library. Everyday Ron would very badly try to sneak his lunch with him telling Harry.
"Mate you can't expect me to work on an empty stomach" making Harry laugh at his friends' antics.
Suddenly one day Harry runs into the small apartment front-room jumping up with excitement, the look on his face tells the two brothers that their luck has finally turned around.
"The sewers" Harry announces ignoring the disgusted look from said brothers "why didn't we think of it sooner!"
Hitting his head, turning a blind eye Harry carries on with his explanation "so everyone knows before the 1970's England didn't have a sewer system, so when they built one after years of work, they had a complete system down there"
"Mate" Ron looks up to Harry from his spot on the couch "what does this have anything to do with what we have been looking for?"
"Erm, well they had to make these big rooms for all the equipment, I think later on" Harry blushes mumberling furring his forehead in thought "so they must have a lot of big spaces just sitting there unoccupied."
"That would take weeks of searching through Harry" Charlie confesses with a miserable look on his face.
"Plus it will stink down there" Ron interjects, not looking in the least bit happy of the thought of spending his free time down in the dark smelly sewerage system.
"They have guides that take people down on tours' ' Harry clarifies "I'm sure we can talk to someone, plus there are catacombs as well as so much more underground. That it would be smart to go talk to someone who knows their way around"
"Okay let's do it" Charlie states, getting up from his spot next to Ron, ignoring the undignified squawk coming from his younger brother.
...
Finding a tutor guide was easier said than done, that could help them finding out the information they needed, it was surprising how many different tours went on underground. There is some for the sewer systems, to the underground mines, what goes on behind the tubes, in the catacombs, the old mail rails and more.
They found out there are 4,000,000 km of secret tunnels and chambers hidden under London along with abandoned structures that do not include the tubes and sewer systems. Detecting an individual who is hiding out in the underskirts of London was becoming harder than searching for a needle in a haystack.
Talking to many different tour guides turned up basically dead ends, didn't help that they weren't working on the clock so their time searching was limited as it was without a time clock waiting for the next person to be attacked.
"There has to be something around, anything we have missed" Harry sighs exasperated.
"Let's start from the beginning" Ron rubs his eyes.
"Victims;
Myrtle Warren, 34 years old female, was a freelance journalist, found DOA outside the skirts of central london in an alley, no wounds or blood only later Tox results showed poison.
Mrs. Norris, a 70 year old retired woman, collapsed while walking down the hallway in her apartment complex.
Colin Creevey, 22 years old male, met him during Hogwarts, worked for the daily profit to be a photographer and collapsed after watching a football game.
Justin Flitch Fletchy, a 24 year old male, unknown occupation found in Epping Forest a few yards away from victim five.
Nicholas de Mimsey-Porpington, 82 year old male, retired cop, also found in Epping forest.
Hermione Granger, 24 year old female, student of Hogwarts University and found outside our home." Harry lists off from his notebook.
"So none of them were found anywhere near each other apart from Fletchy and Mimsey-Porpington, ages, gender is random so no connection there" Charlie groans.
"Two of them worked for a newspaper per say" Ron mumbles.
"Was either of them working on anything?" Charlies inquired.
Searching through files and notes that are scattered around the table, finding both Warrens and Creevey's cases, finding the facts to see anything that helps or jumps out.
"Creevey was working on the photographs for the local football games and Warren is a freelance working on a story about colony's that live…"
Freezing Harry rereads the file, then looks up at Charlie and Ron, back down to back up, a smile on his face forming.
"She was researching people living under London, she was found near Canary Wharf next to A1261" Harry reads off, excitement bubbling through him at the possible lead.
...
Roaming the area in which Myrtle Warren's body was located was starting to look like a dead end, the sky started to darken and with nothing unusual in the area they were about to give up all hope when Harry noticed something hidden in the long grass.
"Guys over here!" He shouts, moving towards the long grass.
Stopping at a barely visible manhole camouflage by its surroundings, what grabbed Harry's attention was the scarcely visible drawing on top of the hidden object; a skull with a snake wrapped round coming out of the mouth. Standing over the manhole Harry begins to try lifting it, giving up Charlie runs back to the car grabbing a crowbar, returning he hands it over to the raven-haired man who makes a lot of hisses while lifting the lid. Dropping the lid next to the hole in the ground, Harry grabs his flashlight while lowering himself onto the ground, Ron holding onto his legs while Harry leans in to the hole so his torso and flashlight is just inside.
Harry grabs hold onto his torch as he lays on the grass, putting his torso into the hole using his torch as a form of light to see if anything suspicious is down there, noticing nothing that shouldn't be down there he pushes himself back up.
"I couldn't see anything, might need to go have a look" Harry explains already turning around readying himself to go down.
"Shouldn't we call in backup?" Ron worries, searching around the area for any threat, a memory of exactly a year ago replying in his mind.
"We will go do and have a look and if we see anything we can call for backup then" Harry explains now half way down just the top of his torso, arms and head visible.
"I'm not sure, Harry," Charlie says, agreeing with his brother, not liking the plan one bit.
"We have made it this far, come on" Harry ignoring both brothers as he continues down to the bottom.
"Harry! Fucking git!" Ron yells down.
Throwing his head back with a loud groan, looking back at his brother who shrugs, Ron groans once again then eventually follows his best friend while cursing his name as he makes his way down, Charlie following suit chuckling. Charlie lands onto the ground, flashlights from the other two searching the area, with their footsteps slapping loudly on the wet floor as they make their way down the tunnel. It was so dark that they could only see a little distance ahead, their shadows on the wet dripping walls looked monstrous in the torchlight, the tunnel was quiet as the grave. The first unexpected sound the guys heard was a loud crunch as Ron, who grimaced lifting his foot, stepped on what turned out to be a rat's skull. Charlie and Harry lower their touchlights towards the floor to have a look and saw it was littered with small animal bones.
"Harry.. There's something coming up from behind us" Ron whispered hoarsely, grabbing Harry's shoulder.
"Well done boys" A voice cockly says "Knew you would lead me here soon enough"
Surprised at seeing Lockhart standing there is a mint green three piece suite, smiling broadly, with a presence like he knew the chamber was here all along.
"How? Why were you following us?" Harry demands trying to keep his voice from traveling through the tunnel.
"No need to be like that Harry" Lockharts remarks, his smile dropping.
Shocking everyone in the tunnel, Lockhart whips out his gun pointing at the three men in front of him, his face no longer it's cheery obnoxiousness but determined.
"Now I can't let it go round that two beat cops and the help, found this and not the GREAT me" Lockhart laughs.
"Wait.. All that stuff written in your books then?" Harry asks.
"Books can be misleading," Lockhart explains delicately.
"You bloody hell wrote them!" Ron shouts.
"My dear children" Lockhart says, frowning at the group "Do use your common sense. You're meant to be cops, not some daft twelve year olds. My books wouldn't have sold half as well if people didn't think I'd done all those things."
He laughs, whole body moving with merth while Charlie, Ron and Harry are standing there gobsmacked.
"No one wants to hear about some ugly old American cop, close to retirement, even if he did save his county from the werewolf bandit" Lockhart shakes his head "He'd look dreadful on the front cover. No dress sense at all and don't get me started on the female cop who caught the Bandon Banshee Cult, she had a harelip. I mean come on.."
"So you've just been taking the credit for what a load of other people have done?" Harry says incredulously.
"Boys, Harry, it's not nearly as simple as that. There is a lot more work involved. I had to track these people down, ask them exactly how they managed to do what they did '' Lockhart tries to clarify sounding exhausted by doing all that 'hard' work "Then I had to inject them with this drug, completely taking their memories and leaving a shell of their former self. If there is one thing I pride myself on it's the drug I made that I call the 'Obliviate..' No it's been a lot of work, boys. It's not all book signings and publicity photos, you know. You want fame, you have to be prepared for the long hard slog. Now lets see.. Yes.. Only one thing left"
Searching his jacket Lockhart pulls out a sheringe with a blue liquid inside, pulling it up to the boys with a mournful expression on his face.
"Awfully sorry boys, but I'll have to use Obliviate on you now. Can't have you blabbing my secrets all over the place. I'd never sell another book." Lockhart clears up, diving towards Ron.
Harry jumps forward rugby tackling the man to the ground, struggling to stop the other man from stabbing him with the needle, managing to push the younger man off himself, Lockhart straightens himself up, panting.
"The adventure ends here boys! I shall take this story back up to the precinct, tell them I was too late to save you all as you all tragically lost your minds.. Say goodbye to your memories."
Harry tried to stop himself but he couldn't help it as soon as he noticed the needle in his forearm, falling to the ground at how stpuid and utterly moronic that man is. He hadn't realised looking down at what the two red-heads were looking at, Lockhart's shocked and horrified face suddenly turned to one of pure confusion as he looked around.
"You have to be taking the piss?" Ron says exasperated "The bloody sod!"
"How?" Charlie wonders completely bewildered at what happened.
"We can't just leave him here alone.. He may end up hurting himself more, Charlie you take him back up and call for backup, Ron come with me" Harry commands, both boys listening immediately.
Aimlessly wandering the tunnel that turned and turned again, until Harry and Ron notice a light shining in the tunnels ahead, roaring can be heard coming from the same area. Every nerve in Harry's body was tingling, turning off their light source; they made their way down the slightly better lit tunnels, hoping not to alert anyone of their presence. At last they crept around yet another bend and saw up a head a solid wall on which two entwined serpents were carved in, their eyes set with great glinting emeralds. Approaching, these stone snakes seemed very real; their eyes looked strangely alive and seemed to flicker in the light.
Both grabbing onto the door, Harry hissing out once again as they managed to slowly open the door, scraping loudly even on the wet concert floor. They were standing at the end of a very long chamber, which was full of different types and sized cages that were placed around. Harry's heart beating loudly in his chest, they both pull out their guns as they start moving around the column's, eyes searching the area for any human's around.
"We have to find the snake" Harry mouths to Ron, who nods affirmatively.
Continuing their search with no avail.
"None of these cages have a snake in them" Ron grumbles "these animals are in such bad conditions, Charlie would want to kill whoever did this."
"We won't let them suffer anymore mate" Harry swears, green eyes darting to the end of the row of cages.
Swearing he saw someone running away at the end, he slowly lifted his gun and torch, moving towards where he saw movement.
"Anyone there?!" Harry calls, Ron immediately raising his own gun, trusting his partner "This is the police!"
Harry points to another walk way in the cages, carrying on ahead Harry knows Ron went the other way to try to trap in who they were following. Coming up to a square area in the middle of the room, empty of any cages Harry comes face to face with someone he was sure he would never see again. A tall, blacked haired man around his age was leaning against a pillar, a smirk on his face.
"Tom… Tom Riddle?" Harry wonders aloud.
"No, but you had put a stop on my father's reign and as you can see I have carried on pretty well" Riddle laughs.
"How?" Harry asks, shocked, staring into a familiar face that haunts him in his nightmares.
"I was a young boy when your family killed my father, so I vowed to kill you like you killed my only family" The other man explains.
Too quickly for Harry to even react the other man pulls out a gun from behind him, raising it and shooting to his left, his dark eyes never leaving Harry, with a vicious grin on his face. Turning everything going in slow motion as Ron gets hit with the bullet, being pushed backwards straight into a tank, glass smashing at the impact as the occupants of the tank attack his best friend. Four medium sized jellyfish, wrap their tentacles around his arms, Ron crying out in agonizing pain, convulsing on the concrete floor.
"RON!" Harry screamed "You're going to pay for that!" Harry yells at Riddle's son.
Bolting away Harry swears as he follows pursuit of the other man, winding in and out of cages, the bespectacled young man starts to grow impatient and in doing so fails to notice when the other man pulls a large glass case on top of him. Crying out as the glass smashes impaling his skin, Harry pushes himself up, willing himself to continue before losing the other man, he freezes. A large black snake slithers it's way across to Harry, petrified he can't move.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck" Harry shouts finally pushing himself away as the snake huntches back for an attack.
Agonising pain starts throbbing through Harry's left forearm as the fangs of the Basilisk hits, grabbing it's head he rips out the fangs accidently breaking one in the process. Throwing the snake to the side, Harry forces himself to get up, every step burns his inter body, ignoring it even more determined to get this guy. His vision slowly starts narrowing as Harry makes his way through to maze, pushing himself to keep moving and not let this monster get away. Falling to the floor screaming out in pain, as the fang plunges further into his arm, Harry is about to give up when he sees Riddle's son walking up to him with not a care in the world.
"I'm going to kill everyone you ever cared for potter" He chuckles "and so you know before you die, it will be your fault"
Anger surges through Harry, thinking of Hermione laying in the hospital bed, Ron laying there being shocked by the jellyfish, his parents and the Weasley family.
"NO!" Harry shouts.
Using the last bit of his energy, Harry rips out the snake fang, surging at the other man, using the last fragment of his energy, he strikes said fang straight right into Tom's son's head right in between his eyes. Screeching out the other man reaches up trying to grab the fang as Harry collapses onto the concert floor, everything blacking out.
...
Waking up Harry groans immediately knowing where he is, aching all over he refuses to open his eyes.
"Mr. Potter, I know you're awake" A familiar voice tsks.
"How is my favorite nurse Cissy?" Harry gives a small guilty smile.
Opening his eyes Harry with a small guilty smile on his face, he looks up to see Narcissa, who has her arms crossed and tears in her eyes.
"You scared me half to death young man" she tells the young man off before hugging him tightly "you nearly died once again"
"I'm sorry Cissy, please don't cry" he pleads, hugging the woman back.
"Scare me once more young man and I will kill you myself" She tells Harry, who is hoping it is a joke.
"I swear I don't do this on purpose" Harry pleads
"I know deary, plus you're too old to be getting cookies for getting hurt" Narcissa jokes.
"I just come to see your beautiful face, Cissy" Harry retorts as the older woman blushes.
"Young man, I am to old for you"
Both start laughing as the door opens and Hermione with an IV still attached comes running into the room and hugs Harry, followed by Ron who has both arms banged up.
"I'm sorry.."
"Don't be mate, you did nothing wrong and plus" Ron looks around and stage whispers "I heard the ladies like guys with scars"
"Boy's" Both Hermione and Narcissa say exasperated chuckling.
