"Come on, what am I missing?" Kara asked as she looked over the bulletin board she'd set up regarding this story regarding the fire.
"Maybe the fact that you were right." Mon-El said as he entered her office.
"I already know that I'm right, I'm trying to figure out how. I'm missing something." Kara said.
"And I have the missing piece." Mon-El said as he handed her a police report.
"What's this?" Kara asked.
"Like I said, it's the missing piece of the puzzle. More specifically, a police report from the fire." Mon-El said as Kara looked over the file.
"Okay yeah, I'd say that this is what I was missing. So, there was only one resident of the apartment complex who didn't survive the fire?" Kara asked.
"Yep, the chief claimed it was an open and shut case, but considering everything else that's in that report, I have a different theory." Mon-El said.
"Yep, I can see why. The corpse they found was burned beyond recognition, though the flames were not hot enough to create injuries that severe, nor was the fire burning long enough to create that sort of effect. Not to mention several cases of questionable police work in this." Kara said.
"So, you thinking what I'm thinking?" Mon-El asked his girlfriend.
"That this Richards guy set the fire and used it to fake his death?" Kara asked.
"Yeah, that." Mon-El confirmed as Kara smiled.
"Maybe, but honestly, even so, that doesn't feel quite right to me. Still falls into place a little too conveniently and it doesn't match anything this file says about him. I mean, he was pretty much a model citizen, never broke any laws, not even a speeding ticket. I don't know why he'd suddenly decide to become a pyro." Kara said as she noticed something very curious on the file.
"Looks like Mr. Richards was not born here in National City or even in the US." Kara said.
"Yeah, so?" Mon-El asked.
"What if he wasn't born on Earth either?" Kara asked.
"You think he's an alien?" Mon-El said.
"Yeah, I mean, maybe he hasn't committed any crimes on this planet, but he did on others and now someone is trying to keep him from escaping justice and set the fire to cover their tracks and potentially pin it on him." Kara said.
"That's a long stretch at best, Kara. It's not like Earth keeps a registry of every alien that's ever landed on it. Not yet anyways." Mon-El said.
"Is that future info?" Kara asked.
"No spoilers. But let's just say that the alien amnesty act that we both know Marsdin will pass soon is just the beginning." Mon-El said.
"Great, not sure how I feel about that. But anyways, when Fort Rozz crashed on Earth, the DEO managed to salvage information from it's data core, including the prisoner manifest. I'll call Alex, ask her to run this face through Fort Rozz's prisoner manifest. Also, I need to test a theory. Is there an Officer Carl Draper on the force?" Kara asked.
"Yeah, how do you know about him?" Mon-El asked.
"Because in the old reality I fought him." Kara said.
"Since when do you fight cops?" Mon-El asked.
"When it turns out that they're actually renegade Fort Rozz guards who rounded escaped convicts up and killed them, regardless of the crime and of what they were doing at the time. He's as bad as any of the criminals he was charged with keeping in prison." Kara said.
"But you don't know if it's the same guy. New universe means a new timeline." Mon-El said and Kara nodded.
"True. Which is why I'm going to have Alex confirm it for me at the DEO and I'm also going to ask her if she'd mind giving us access to the DEO's database." Kara said.
"Couldn't hurt." Mon-El agreed, right as she heard the elevator open down the hall.
"I think we might have a new situation, since I'm not expecting anyone." Kara said, though she immediately calmed down when she used her x-ray vision to see who it was.
"Never mind." Kara said with a grin as she headed to the door, right as a familiar face arrived at it.
"Any chance I can get my own office boss?" Nia Nal asked with a grin.
"For you, absolutely." Kara said with a grin as they hugged.
"It's so good to see you." Nia said.
"You too. I've actually already prepared an office for you, since I was hoping that you'd come to work for me when you eventually made it to National City. Took you long enough by the way." Kara said and Nia rolled her eyes.
"Sorry about that. I had a few things I needed to take care of in DC before I moved here." Nia said.
"Well, I'm glad that you're finally here. Now that my paper is actually taking off, I can afford to take on some extra help." Kara said.
"Good, because since Catco is not in National City, this is the only place I could see myself working. So, who's this?" Nia asked, reminding Kara that Mon-El was still in the room.
"Nia, this is my boyfriend Mon-El, Mon-El, meet the newest addition to the Superfriends, Nia Nal." Kara said.
"Wait, Nia Nal, as in Dreamer." Mon-El said.
"You know about me?" Nia asked.
"Of course. When I formed the Legion, I attempted to track down as many descendants of the Superfriends as I could. Including your descendant Nura Nal. I swear, it's like I'm looking at her right now." Mon-El said.
"Really." Nia said eagerly.
"While this is fun, no spoilers. We're messing with time enough as it is, I don't think we should push our luck by revealing information about a future that may no longer exist." Kara reminded them.
"Right. Anyways, it's nice to meet you Mon-El and it is so nice to finally see Kara with someone." Nia said.
"I've been getting that a lot lately. I even got a phone call from Eliza yesterday reminding me not to break Kara's heart again, because if I did, then Alex wouldn't be the family member I'd need to be afraid of, though I still am." Mon-El said.
"Good. But why didn't you tell me Eliza called you?" Kara asked.
"Didn't seem relevant and I didn't want you to be embarrassed." Mon-El said and Kara smiled as she kissed his cheek.
"I'm glad to see you have him back, Kara. Especially considering that after all the stories I've heard about him, not only from you guys, but Brainy never shut up about the amazing leader Mon-El was in the future. You sure you're okay stepping out of that role?" Nia asked.
"Don't worry, I'm perfectly happy letting Kara be the leader of the Superfriends, since honestly, I never wanted to be a leader, but I became one because that's what the world needed me to be." Mon-El said.
"Just checking." Nia said.
"Speaking of Brainy, we could try and get a message to him if you'd like." Kara said.
"No. I mean, if he does show up here, that's great, but in the meantime, I'm going to focus on the people who are in the present." Nia said.
"Copy that." Kara said.
"So anyways, what are you working on?" Nia asked.
"Running down a hunch regarding the not so accidental fire yesterday, I think that the past is repeating itself, of course, can't be sure yet." Kara said as she brought Nia up to speed.
"That's a bit of a leap there Kara." Nia said.
"I know, but still, I don't want to leave any stone unturned. My reporter sense is telling me I'm on the right track." Kara said.
"Then we'll follow the story. Also, where's the superhero base, since I'm guessing that we're not operating out of the DEO this time around?" Nia asked.
"No we are not. There's a reason that the elevator you used only goes up to this floor. Winn and Lena are working on turning the top two levels of this place into a base for us. But until it's done, J'onn is letting us operate out of a defunct DEO outpost in the city." Kara said.
"You're trusting Lena with that?" Nia asked, surprised.
"I'm not saying I trust her yet, but I'm giving her a chance to earn it." Kara said and Nia nodded.
"Well, this Winn guy, he's the one you told me about right? The genius that Brainy convinced to travel to the future?" Nia asked.
"Yeah, that's him. He's one of my oldest and most trusted friends. He was the first person I told I was Supergirl." Kara said.
"So, you have a tech guy you can actually trust. Great." Nia said.
"Do you have your suit?" Kara asked.
"No, not yet and honestly, I think I might just have this Winn guy make it for me." Nia said.
"Really, I thought that you'd want your mom's suit?" Kara asked.
"And I do, it's just." Nia said.
"Your sister." Kara said knowingly and Nia nodded.
"Kara, you know how badly she reacted when she found out that I was the one who inherited mom's powers." Nia said.
"Nia, you have to tell them. I think that they'll figure it out when they see a woman who looks like you wearing a suit that will most likely end up looking just like your mom's suit, using dream powers on the news. They should hear it from you. And if Maeve can't can't accept that you're the one who got the powers instead of her, then it's her loss, but remember, your parents accept you and you also have us. We're your family too and we will always be there for you." Kara said and Nia smiled.
"I know that, it's just, Maeve and I are on good terms again and I don't want to lose that, since I know that now that I know how to use my powers, if she crosses that same line she did before, I'll probably end up showing her a way to use them that she never imagined." Nia said.
"You're gonna dream blast her." Kara said and Nia nodded.
"Not sure if I actually will, but I know I'll feel the temptation too." Nia said.
"Then I'll go with you, have your back and also remind you that you're better than that." Kara said and Nia smiled at her gratefully.
"But, that might have to wait until after we catch this guy, since, if Kara's right, he's too dangerous to risk waiting." Mon-El said and both women nodded in agreement with him.
