Chapter 6
-Second year, pt 1-
Cassie looked around at the group of people gathered around the table. James, Lily, Harry, and Minnie. Sirius and Remus. Cedric and his mother.
Cassie grinned at Cedric as she blew out the twelve candles on the chocolate cake in front of her. Everyone clapped and Lily sliced the cake and served it. Cassie felt happier then she had ever felt in her life. She had never been given a birthday party before.
After the table was cleared Cedric and Cassie went out to the garden. Cassie gazed up at the stars, and then realized that Cedric was looking at her. Not the stars. "What is it?" she asked. Cedric smiled. "You...you make me happy. I'm always happy when I'm around you. And I've realized...that's because I...I care about you."
Cassie looked at him, thinking about what he had said. "I care about you too Cedric." She leaned over and kissed his cheek. His cheeks turned pink underneath her lips. She pulled back and smiled. He took her hand and they walked back to the cottage.
"Mum! Mum! Come here!" Harry whispered excitedly. "What is it Harry?" Lily asked him. He pointed out the window and Lily looked out just in time to see Cassie kiss Cedrics cheek. Harry grinned. "No teasing." Lily said, smiling despite herself. Harry just kept grinning and ran to find his uncles.
Lily turned back to the window. Cassie and Cedric were walking back hand in hand. She smiled to herself and went back to the living room.
"Back to Hogwarts at last." Fred sighed happily as he plopped down in the compartment with George. Cassie and Cedric grinned. "What's the plan for the first prank of the year?" Cedric asked. "I was thinking we should try the Great Hall again. You know, the color changing charm that Cassie found last year? For everyone's eyebrows." George said with a smirk.
Cassie and Cedric looked at him with apprehension. "Last time we tried we ended up in detention with Snape." Cassie put in. "We'll be more careful this time. Come on it's the perfect prank!" Fred pleaded. Cassie rolled her eyes and looked over at Cedric, who shrugged.
"Fine. But we're being very careful, alright? My aunt wouldn't be very happy if she got a letter the first day back." Cassie said. She didn't include James in this as she knew he would collapse with laughter and want to know all the details.
When they arrived at Hogwarts they followed the group of students who weren't first years to a line of carriages. With nothing pulling them. "What's pulling them?" Cassie asked curiously as the four of them piled into a carriage.
"Thestrels. They're visible only to those who have seen someone die." Cedric said grimly. "Oh. You...you can't see them can you, Cedric?" Cassie said quietly. "No. But my dad can. So that's why I know that fact." Cedric answered her with a slight smile.
Cassie smiled back and leaned her head against his shoulder as the carriage made its way towards the castle.
Midnight came and went. They had decided to meet at one. They always met at midnight so they decided to change it up for the new school year. They met in front of the big wooden doors.
Fred pulled on the handle. "Damn. It's locked." Cassie stepped forward pulling out her wand. "Here I'll get it. Alohomora." The lock clicked open and they went inside. George took a deep breath. "Okay. Everyone remember the table they're supposed to charm?" The other three nodded. "Good. Let's get to work."
Cassie made her way to the Slytherin table, where she muttered the charm at one end of the table, then repeated at the other end. She made her way back towards the doors, joining Cedric by the Gryffindor table.
The twins finished quickly and they left the Great Hall together. Cassie and Cedric said goodnight to the twins and headed for the Hufflepuff dorms.
The next morning as Cassie entered the Great Hall she was met with laughter and shrieks of delight (and some of anger) as everyone's eyebrows turned to their house colors.
She and Cedric sat down at the Hufflepuff table and watched each others eyebrows turn black and gold. They smirked and looked over at George and Fred. They smirked back and dodged a slap from an upset sixth year.
"I'd say it worked pretty well." Cedric whispered in Cassie's ear. She grinned.
"Stand over your brooms and say Up! With confidence." Madam Hooch instructed the second years. Cassie's broom flew into her hand with a satisfying tingle and she grinned at Cedric, who had also succeeded.
Cassie couldn't wait for Quidditch tryouts. She usually played Chaser with Harry, James, and Sirius, but she was better as Keeper. Cedric played Seeker and was really good. She had been practicing all summer, and Hufflepuffs Keeper and Seeker had just graduated.
"We did it! We're on the team!" Cedric and Cassie jumped around the common room as sixth and seventh years smiled and shook their heads. "I didn't think I would get it. I almost dropped the Quaffle. Twice." Cedric scoffed. "You did not! You caught all four throws. Flawlessly. That fifth year was quite upset that you got on the team instead of him."
Cassie rolled her eyes and smiled. Cedric was always telling her she underestimated her skills and talents. All her life people had told her she was bad at things. Why should she be good at them now?
She said goodnight to Cedric and went up to her dorm. She changed clothes and climbed into bed, thinking that she must send a letter to James and Harry tomorrow to tell them she made the team.
Classes went on as normal and so did the pranks. Their success with the eyebrow prank had given them enough confidence to step up their pranking game. They made plans to prank Snape. It was bold, but they were bolder. Cedric was a bit unwilling but when Fred brought up all the times Snape had bullied Cassie, Cedric started planning relentlessly.
They decided to do it in Potions class. Gryffindor and Hufflepuff had Potions together that term so it would be easy. Kind of. The twins had to distract Snape while Cassie and Cedric did some quick charm work.
One month into the new term they put their plan into action. Cassie and Cedric sat at a table together, near the front but to the side. Fred and George sat in the opposite side near the back.
Halfway through making a simple sleeping draught, the twins potions exploded. Under the noise and confusion, Cassie and Cedric quickly cast a Jelly Legs hex and a Silencing charm. The class erupted with laughter and Snape looked furious as he silently wobbled.
With a look of sympathy on her face, Cassie went over to Snape and asked him if he would like her to perform the counterspells. He looked at her suspiciously but she kept the sympathy in her eyes. He nodded begrudgingly and she undid the spells in no time. He stood up and went back to his desk, ordering the class to continue working on their potions, and taking ten points from Gryffindor for carelessness.
Later that night Cassie and Cedric collapsed in laughter on the couch in the common room while reliving that days Potions class.
When Cassie went home for the Christmas holidays, she felt that she would give anything for James to see Professor Snape on a certain day in Potions class.
