Chapter Six

A few months have passed since that terrible, terrible day, and Becky did become pregnant.

But, now, we're in Monstropolis General Hospital, and we've just learned we've had a miscarriage.

What I wouldn't give to take my wife's pain away, both physical and emotional.

When she's released from the hospital, Mike drives us home to our new townhouse.

Becky and I had both hoped that a change of scenery would stop her night terrors. Granted, it was an expensive change of scenery, moving from one place to another, but I don't care. My job pays well, and Becky's book is doing very well in the monster world, being the only human inhabitant.

We get home and I help Becky sit on the couch, and I can tell she's emotionally numb.

After saying goodbye to Mike, I go to our kitchen and make Becky a cup of cocoa, just the way she likes it, since she doesn't like tea.

While I'm microwaving the milk for her cocoa, I hear quiet sobs coming from the living room and my heart breaks.

Becky so much wanted this baby, no matter who the father was. She couldn't…she couldn't get rid of an innocent baby, even if that baby would remind her every day of how they came to be.

I put a smiley face made of marshmallows in Becky's cocoa. I know nothing will cheer her up right now, I just want her to know I'm here for her.

I place the mug of cocoa on a coaster on our coffee table and sit next to my wife.

She silently begins to sob into my shoulder and I do everything I can to comfort her.

"Randall, wh-what did I do wrong?"

"Oh, honey. Oh, my dove. You've done absolutely nothing wrong."

"The baby knew I didn't want them deep down…and now I'd do anything in my power to bring them back."

I kneel in front of my wife and take her face in my top set of hands, my bottom set of hands holding her hands, my top set drying her tears.

"Now, you listen to me, Rebekah Boggs. This is not your fault. It's no one's fault. Yes, we lost this baby. But that's not your fault. When you first felt that pain of the miscarriage, my heart shattered. I know the signs of a miscarriage because my sister went through the same thing before she had Rex. There is nothing I wouldn't do to take your pain away. There's nothing I wouldn't do to bring this baby back. But I am powerless to do anything but hold you and help you through this difficult time."

"Are you – are you sure the baby didn't know? Babies can sense what their mothers are feeling."

"We'll never know if the baby did or didn't know. But I do know one thing: this baby knew – knows - you love them, and they know you would do anything to bring them back."

My poor wife collapses into a fresh puddle of tears and I hold her close.

"Oh, my dove. My precious, precious dove. I'm here. I'm right here."

We stay right there on the living room until her cocoa has long gone cold, and the marshmallows have all but dissolved.

And I break down right there with her.

It's all I can do besides hold her.

She needs me. And I need her.

Becky doesn't complete me, because I'm already complete.

But she does complement me.

Hours pass and she eventually falls asleep in my arms. I'm not strong enough to lift her to carry her to bed, so I, regrettably, have to wake her so she can sleep in our bed with me holding her.

"Honey."

"Hmm…?"

"Come on. Let's get you to bed."

"Don't wanna."

"I know, baby. If you go to bed, you know what'll occur next?"

"I fall asleep?"

"Well, yeah. But, also, I'll hold you."

"You will?"

"Forever and ever and always. Well, until we need to get up, that is."

Becky nods, and I help her up and we go to bed for the night.

~.~

"Honey? Will you be okay while I go into work for a few minutes?" I ask the next morning.

"I'll be okay. I'll just stay in bed and sleep."

"That's my girl. Love you."

"Love you, too, Randy."

I head to work after locking the door behind me and double-checking to make sure both locks are locked.

"Hey, Randall. What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at home with Becky?" Celia asks me from behind the front desk.

"Hey, Celia. Did Mike…?"

"You know how he is." Celia says.

"I just need to take care of some things before heading back home."

"Okay. Give your wife my best, Randall."

"Will do, Celia."

I walk to the locker room to organize my locker. I know I should be at home, but Becky insisted she'd be okay on her own for a while.

"Boggs."

I turn and see none other than Johnny Worthington III.

"Johnny. Didn't see you there."

"It's no secret that you, uh, married a human."

"And that's a problem because…?"

"Oh, it's not. I just wanted to know why she picked someone like you."

I turn away from Johnny and get back to organizing.

"And I also wanted to know if my human friend got to her."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Well, I sent him after her, so I just wanted to – " Adrenaline pumping through my veins, I shove Johnny up against the locker.

"You did what? Explain yourself, Worthington. Now."

"Her ex…he has a little sister that laughs at my jokes and stuff…he met me and asked if he could talk to me for a minute. He asked if I knew a Rebekah Nielsen, and I said I lurked around the wedding of her and Randall Boggs, and he asked if he could come into our world to exact his revenge on her for her breaking his heart ten years ago. Well, I'm not one to refuse a request like that."

"You're the reason we had to move across town? The reason my wife still has night terrors?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy there, Boggs. I just helped him sneak in. I wasn't the one who actually hurt her."

"But you helped him. You actually helped that son of a…You know what? I should have you arrested for helping him hurt my wife."

I suddenly hear my name being called over the PA system.

"Randall Boggs, please report to the front desk as soon as possible. Randall Boggs, to the front desk as soon as possible."

"You'd better get that, Boggs. It might be important." Johnny says, smirking at me.

"I'll be back for you." I say, baring my teeth.

Fearing the worst for my wife, I race out to the front desk.

"Celia? What's going on?"

"Your wife's on the line, Randall. Her ex is back."

I race out the front door of Monsters, Inc. and speed home.

The front door is busted down, and I quickly but quietly go upstairs, going invisible.

I hear my wife's cries of agony, along with a belt hitting skin.

"I said shut up!"

Grabbing a table lamp from the hall table, I sneak up behind the jerk – and that's putting it mildly – and knock him out from behind.

He collapses and my wife screams.

"Honey! Honey, it's just me! It's just me! Can you walk?"

She shakes her head.

"Okay. I'm going to call for an ambulance."

Becky nods, but something's wrong.

"Honey, what's wrong?"

"I think…I think he caused my…"

"Say no more, honey. Just hang on. I won't leave you."

I call for an ambulance and quickly but quietly explain the situation, as to not terrify my wife even further.

When the ambulance arrives, the paramedics assess the situation and we race to the hospital.

The paramedics have to force us apart.

"I love you, Randy."

"I love you, too, Becky. Just let them do their jobs and let them help you."

She nods as she's raced off to the OR.

Hours pass, and Mike and Sullivan have come into the ER to see what's going on.

"Randall, is everything okay?"

"No. He hurt her again, and this time…this time, he took it too far, and I might lose her. Mikey, I can't lose her. I can't. It would…it would…"

"We know what you mean, Randy."

"Mr. Randall Boggs?"

I turn and see a doctor coming out of the OR.

"I'm Randall Boggs. Please, please tell me my wife is going to be okay."

"She's going to be just fine. We'll move her to her room soon, then you can see her."

"Thank you so much, doctor. I know my wife is grateful as well."

"You're both quite welcome. A nurse will come to get you once you're allowed to see your wife."

"Thanks again."

The doctor leaves and I collapse.

"You okay, Randy?"

"I'm relieved, Mike. I'm so, so relieved."

~.~

Soon, I'm able to go into my wife's room and be there when she wakes up.

"Mmmm…Randy?" She asks when she does eventually wake up.

"Shh…I'm here, darlin'. I'm right here with you. And I promise, you never have to go through that ever again. It was a one-time thing."

"Good. What about…what about my ex? I don't want him hurting you again or anyone else for that matter."

"You remember me telling you about my days in the fraternity Roar Omega Roar?"

"Yeah. You said they were horrible to you."

"Well, Johnny Worthington III sent your ex after you."

Becky struggles to sit up.

"Shhh. Don't get up, honey. It's okay. We can press charges on both of them."

"What if they both skip town?"

"We'll make sure that doesn't occur. Let's just focus on getting you better, okay?"

She nods.

"Get some rest, my dove. I'll be right here. I promise I won't leave you. And I intend to keep that promise."
