Gossiping was always been one of people's favorite pastime whether they'd like to admit it or not. Well, there's this person I forgot once said "Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people". Most people fall on the latter two categories. This means that people will mostly discuss people, events, or the combination of both which is is basically gossiping to a certain degree. And by usual, a simple gossip to your sitmate can potentially become a big rumor that would circulate around the class, or in a worse case, the whole school.
That's why I hate the act of gossiping, not because I've always been a victim of it (well, it's true but...) , it's because this type of conversation is one of the main contributors of noise inside my classroom. To be honest, I don't really care about the negative rumors about me as I also don't mind having a very bad reputation. However, no matter how hard someone tries to minimize their voice while gossiping, it's still noisy as hell if it reaches my ears.
You see, noise doesn't necessarily relate to the loudness of the sound, it's all about the sounds that you don't want to hear. For example: If loudness was the basis for noise, then why some people even bother listening to metal music? For all we know, metal music was meant to be loud, so why? That is because it's something that the specific listener wants to hear. If that certain person hears a very common pop music which doesn't appeal to him/her even to the slightest, he/she will instantly deem that music as trash, or in other words, noise. That's basically the idea of it.
I think you already know what's the situation right now but just in case you didn't know, the topic of the annoying gossips of my classmates right now is the fact that I won the student council presidential election by default. Actually it's not a surprise that they'll be wondering how did it happen because some of them are not even aware of my candidacy. And of course, the one who's too noisy with it is no other than... ugh, Hayama's clique.
"Seriously?! Hikitani-kun is now our student council president?" Tobe loudly asked his friends.
"I'm actually surprised too." One of the two nobodies of their clique replied.
"Yui-chan, you know anything about this? Y'now because you're like clubmates or something."
Yuigahama was visibly trying to recall something. "Ehehe, I did know something but I thought he's just joking." Oi, when did I ever joked about something like this?
"C'mon guys, it's not like there's anything wrong with Hikitani-kun being the president, right?" Hayama interjected. On the corner of my eye, I saw a certain four-eyed girl slowly making a grin. I... think I know what will happen next
I went out if the classroom, ignoring the bloody mess that Hayama's clique, specifically Ebina, had made. Although I usually wait for Yuigahama to leave the classroom, I didn't because she seems to be occupied with her friends. Also, my only intention of going to service club room is just inform Yukinoshita that I will be on the student council office to prepare everything for Shiromeguri-senpai's turning of her authority to me, at least for today.
As I slid the door of the service club open, I can see that Yukinoshita was already inside, not that the sighting is rare though. I entered the room and went to inform her of me not being able to participate for today's club activities.
"So the king of laziness is now too eager to attend the club? By the way, good afternoon to you, Hikigaya-kun." Is it only me or that Yukinoshita seems scarier than usual?
"Hey, what's with the sudden jabs?"
"Just... just angry about something."
Now that's just something. That must be something serious but I can't think of anything of the cause. Maybe it's that time of the month? Nah, very unlikely. Wait, is this still about my presidency?
"If this about the student cou-"
"Irrelevant, Hiki-assumer-kun. And yeah, congratulations on being the new student council president. I'm pretty sure a potential candidate out there just dropped the idea of running after seeing your detestable name on the bulletin board that's why you managed to win by default." Yes yes, I really should be avoided because just their name being written next to mine at the bulletin board will curse them for eternity.
Hey, was it really that much of a surprise that I garnered enough vote of confidence to win the presidency by default? Well, I guess you could say that. It appears that no matter how awful most students think of me, Shiromeguri-senpai's influence over the student body is enough to negate all of it.
"By the way, I'm just here to inform you that I won't be attending the club activities today."
"Yuigahama-san hasn't informed you? We won't be having club activities today." Oh wow, very convenient? That makes it easier then.
Just for the sake of it, I asked why the club activities is canceled for today. "Why so?"
"My mother organized a party and part of the event is introducing me to possible suitors. I already informed Yuigahama-san about this."
"Ah, so that's what you're angry about. Sucks to be you, I guess." I guess I shouldn't have said that.
" You..." She took a deep breath. "See you tomorrow, Hikigaya-kun."
"Bye."
We then walked outside the club room and went on our separate ways.
To be honest, I didn't expect Yukinoshita to take my student council presidency that easily. Maybe that's just because her hands are currently full with their party. Well, not that it matter much.
While I was walking towards the student council office, my phone suddenly vibrated, probably just Komachi messaging me about her being the best imouto in the world. I opened it and saw that it was Yuigahama.
"Yahallo Hikki! *\O*Yukinon told me there will be no club activities today (TT) Anyways, see you tomorrow! "
Uh, what's with these hieroglyphics? She's always telling me that I'm too outdated, yet she's the one using an ancient form of communication here. Also, her email is a bit too late considering that I was already been to the club room.
I glimpsed towards my favorite lunch spot and unexpectedly, it was occupied by people I know very well: Yuigahama and... Totsuka? Nah, it's not that surprising considering he's not a part of the famous kids' clique yet I saw them talking in the class always. Now I kinda wish I was in Yuigahama's position right now- wait, that's wrong! I'm a straight guy! Maybe I could make an excepti- Aaah! Perish, evil thoughts!
I decided not to invite myself to their conversation as I'm sure that would only come as me being rude to them. With that, I only stopped to grab cans of Max coffee at the vending machine there.
At last, I reached the student council office and as expected, Shiromeguri-senpai is there busy from all the documents necessary for the transfer of authority. The former officers are also there.
"Ah, Hikigaya-kun! There you are!" Shiromeguri-senpai greeted me cheerfully.
"Good afternoon, senpai."
Thus, we proceeded to my new work as a president. The duties are, well, let's just say as expected of being a member of the student council. However, everything was explained clearly by Shiromeguri-senpai that it became much easier that I were to understand them by myself. Her filling the atmosphere with her signature fluffy aura also really helps in keeping me relaxed throughout the whole hour of work.
Wait, I haven't chosen the other officers yet! Now that this sudden yet inevitable thought finally made its way to my mind, I have no choice but to scan my memory for some unfortunate acquaintances that I could ask to join me here.
As disappointing as it sounds, the very first person that I came up with is Zaimokuza. And to be honest, I think he's the easiest to convince about joining. In fact, I can already hear him saying "Ha ha ha! Once we're comrades on that battle that shocked the heavens, we shall be united once again to rule the poor citizens of the Sobu empire." or something.
Finally, we're finished with all the work for today. The former members of the student council gathered near the door, thanking each other for a year of service, cooperation and whatnot. Shiromeguri-senpai catched up with them, dragging me along with her.
Now this isn't that much of an issue since she just wants to show me how to get along with colleagues. What surprised me is how she dragged me. Yes, this is the "accidental hand holding" cliché. Needless to say, I'm quite embarrassed right now but I somehow composed myself to avoid other people here seeing my face. Although it wasn't a problem to begin with as I caught a glimpse of my reflection on the window and saw my face wearing the same blank expression. Well, it seems that I'm not as expressive as I thought I was.
"Everyone, let's congratulate Hikigaya-kun for being our successor!" Eh, that's kinda chunni thing to say. If this is how the council acts, then maybe Zaimokuza isn't really that much of a bad choice.
"It's nice to have you here, Hikigaya-san."
"We saw your performance during the cultural festival preparations. You're good, kid."
That and other small praises here and there. To be honest, I didn't expect other students to notice my work, let alone praise me for it. Yeah, I'm quite thankful that they saw my efforts of being an assistant historian rather that being the asshole who made the committee chairman cry. Maybe I really am suited for jobs involving papers and typing numbers on a spreadsheet. After all, the blood of the two corporate slaves runs in my veins.
"Uh, thank you." I replied.
Then a sudden question was thrown at Shiromeguri-senpai. "Eh Meguri-chan, perhaps why you've chosen Hikigaya-san as your successor is because you're dating him. Am I right?"
What? Me dating senpai? I couldn't find any reason why the former secretary asked so. I can't even see us being friends yet, let along being that.
"Ahaha, it's not like that. Hikigaya-kun really is suitable for the position." Shiromeguri-senpai replied. Phew, at least she didn't say " Why would I date him? Gross.".
"Well if you say so... Anyways, bye everyone!"
The former secretary waved her hands while linking her arms with the former vice-president which I assume is his significant other, and had their way out of the office. The treasurer then followed, leaving only the two of us inside. Now I wonder why she didn't came with them.
"Uh, senpai..."
"I know what you're thinking. Can't leave you by yourself, you know?" That's not really the issue here, you know?
"Okay." was all I could reply.
And that's it. The responsibility of walking her home this late at night was been thrown to me. Not like I mind though...
A/N: Sorry for the very late update. To be honest, I actually forgot that I made my own fanfic. So when I recently opened my document manager to write a new fic, I remembered everything, and thus continued my existing fic instead of making a new one.
